Book Description
Developed by one of the foremost designers of astonomical maps, The Cambridge Star Atlas offers an unusual degree of breadth and detail for amateur and experienced astronomers. Northern and southern latitudes are included in a series of monthly sky charts and an atlas of the whole sky. Each of the 20 overlapping full color charts shows stars down to magnitude 6.5, together with about 900 nonstellar objects, such as clusters and galaxies, which can be seen with binoculars or a small telescope. This new edition features 52 color maps, improved versions of all the charts, and a thorough revision of the text and star data based on the latest information. In addition, there is a comprehensive double page map of the Moon's surface, which shows craters and other named features. Clear, authoritative, and easy-to-use, The Cambridge Star Atlas is an ideal reference for sky watchers everywhere, throughout the year. Wil Tirion began his first star atlas as a hobby, mapping the whole sky on five maps. It was published in the Encyclopedia of Astronomy and soon after was released as a separate set of maps by the British Astronomical Association. In 1983, Tirion began working as a full-time uranographer, or sky cartographer. Since then, he has contributed to many books and magazines on astronomy. He lives in the Netherlands.
Customer Reviews:
Observer's companion.......2007-09-27
This star atlas is both aesthetically pleasing and useful. The large pages made it possible to read the charts without having to resort to a magnifying glass. Coupled with a red flashight of some sort (e.g. Gerber ReconGerber 22-80016 Recon Light, White / Red / Blue / Green LED - Black Body it's a nice companion for observing.
Excellent for its intended purpose.......2007-01-13
In spite of a few minor flaws (see other reviews), this is probably the best, inexpensive, high-level atlas available. It is the first atlas I reach for when I need to explain something quickly to someone with little knowledge of the sky. The level of detail makes it good for outdoor use (with an appropriate red light, of course) with binoculars. Good software is increasingly making tools like this obsolete, but somehow hard-copy atlases always seem to have a place, and they're handy to grab off the shelf and just casually study too.
Not recommended........2006-09-03
I have this book and I am very disappointed in it.
Yes, the charts are very well done. However, the book's layout and organization (or lack thereof) make the charts next to useless. They do next to nothing for the beginner who needs first to learn the sky. For the more serious observer, these charts are hopeless.
I would encourage beginner's to look at Norton's Atlas (20th edition) which has nice, large swaths of the sky covered in each chart along with a large reference section. Yes, if you get serious, you'll outgrow Norton's charts quickly, but you'll still have its useful reference material which is the bulk of the book.
For the serious observer, there's the Sky Atlas 2000.0, the Millenium, and older Uranometria atlases, all of which have much more detail that the serious observer craves.
As other reviewers have observed, these middle level charts (up to Mag 6) are probably not very uselful for either beginner or serious observer. I would add, "especially in the format presented here".
Not the best.......2006-06-30
On the plus side, the star charts are the most clear and readable of any 6th magnitude atlas. Unfortunately, the atlas contains a couple of flaws which impede its usefulness in the field.
It goes to magnitude 6.5 and shows 9500 stars, which limits its usefulness. Even a lowly 6x30mm finder goes considerably deeper than that.
When you look for an object just off the edge of one of your charts, the edge of the chart tells you nothing about where to go next. You have to fumble back to the index page to find out which chart to go to, which is time consuming and aggravating.
Terrestrial atlases place guides at the edges of their maps: "continues on 14." This is all the more important for astronomical observation, where the user is in the dark with nothing but a red flashlight and possibly holding an eyepiece or filter. To make the atlas practicable for field use, users must write the adjacent chart information on the charts themselves. A row of tabs with the numbers of the charts would make the charts even more usable.
It is sad when designers of star atlases do not take into account the needs of their users.
A better combination 6th magnitude atlas and observer's guide is Levy's Skywatching. But I would recommend skipping 6th magnitude altogether. Get the Sky and Telescope Pocket Star Atlas instead. It is better designed, goes far deeper--to magnitude 7.6 with 31,000 stars, and costs less. Supplement it with an observer's guide like Skywatching or Celestial Sampler.
Cool atlas.......2003-03-16
I have a 4 inch apo and if you have scope like me, buy this little gem. Sky maps are just beatiful, having exactly as much info as I need. They are beautifully rendered by a master. Maps overlap generously.
Tables are above every map and they are pleasure to use. Of course there is only 912 deep sky objects, but if you have a light bucket over 10" you need an atlas at least as heavy as your scope:) For me it is more than enough.
There are very interesting all-sky maps of various objects distribution. They give you a good feeling of our position in Galaxy and Universe.
I gave only four stars because in the field it can catch dew and you have to be carefull. The Moon map is not the best and for a reflector, so not good for me.
Highly recomended.

Book Description
Wil Tirion, the renowned astronomical cartographer, has produced this atlas of the sky with the beginner in mind. Each chart shows all the stars visible to the naked eye over a wide area of sky, together with the brighter nebulae and galaxies. Constellation boundaries and the Milky Way are also shown. Color codes enable the user to distinguish easily the various kinds of objects shown. The charts are complemented by tables of objects, such as different sorts of stars, nebulae, and galaxies, for which one can search. Each table is placed opposite the corresponding chart to facilitate use. The charts are in full color, making them both attractive and simple to use. The result is a self-contained star atlas that will delight and inform newcomers to practical astronomy.

A small big astronomy book.......2006-10-20
Do not let the small size of this star atlas to mislead you (48pp) I bought this Cambridge Pocket Star Atlas with the intention of replacing another star atlas that I lost, and my surprise was big when I discovered that this booklet includes detailed descriptions and easy to understand explanations for such a concepts (to lay people like me) as Declination and Right Ascension, equinoxes, meridian passage, Apparent visual magnitude & Absolute visual magnitude, the Spectral types (O, B, A, F, G, K, M), Synodic Period, etc.
For years I had been observing the night sky by identifying the stars and the constellations only, but since when I read this Cambridge Pocket Star Atlas I can feel that I am, at least, an amateur astronomer. Buy this one, it's highly recommend.
Great Help in Stargazing.......2001-08-19
This book was great. It helped me to understand alot about the night sky. This book tells me all about the constellations and other heavenly bodies, such as the Orion Nebulae, the planets, sun and moon. This book is a perfect guide to the heavens for adults and children. Buy this book. It is GREAT.

Book Description
Lewis acids provide inexpensive access to elaborated molecules obtained with high selectivities (regio-, stereo-, and enantioselectivity). Lewis Acids and Selectivity in Organic Synthesis is the first book to deal with these new and promising roles of Lewis acids. The book begins with general considerations on Lewis acids and a description of Lewis acid-carbonyl complexes, which are involved in most of the reactions described: ene reactions, allylsilane and allyltin addition to carbonyl compounds, addition of nucleophiles to acetals, conjugated addition of allylsilanes and allyltins to unsaturated carbonyl compounds (Sakurai reaction), and Diels-Alder reaction. Subsequent chapters examine these issue in detail, with special attention given to the way Lewis acids induce diastereo- and enantioselectivity. The extensive use of schemes (approximately 1000) ensures rapid visual uptake of the information. Lewis Acids and Selectivity in Organic Synthesis serves as a valuable source of information for all who face the challenge of selectivity in organic synthesis.

A humourous look at the animals.......1998-03-31
I enjoyed the lighter side of bears, bunnies, and bulls. These humorous stories about animals captured my imagination and made me chuckle out loud. I really liked the adventures of Race the almost human bear. This book is a good read for anyone who is young at heart. The only thing I haven't been able to figure out is can bears really fly fish??????????
Book Description
Although the Chinese contribution to Allied victory in World War II is often ignored, China fought the Japanese Empire for far longer than any other belligerent nation. By the time that the Sino-Japanese War became absorbed into the wider conflict at the end of 1941, Chinese armies had already suffered huge casualties and half the country had been lost. By fighting on with Allied support, China tied down a million Japanese troops. After Japan’s defeat in 1945, China was immediately plunged back into civil war between Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalists and Mao Tse-tung’s Communists; and the latter’s victory in 1949 changed the world for the rest of the 20th century and beyond.

The Chinese Army 1937-49: World War II and Civil War.......2007-02-17
Very good book on little known subject. Information on uniforms and equipment was very good.
Excuse me?.......2005-11-09
So finally there is an illustrated book about the National Revolutionary Army of the Republic of China... and the cover is of a Japanese soldier sticking his bayonet up some poor Nationalist soldier who promptly surrenders, all while someone dressed in Communist garb calmly watches on. If this image was chosen as the cover I can imagine what goes on inside... I'm sure there's nothing about the defence of Sihang Warehouse, Battle of Shanghai, Operation Ichigo, and the various battles that took place. Instead it is most likely filled with pictures conveying pretty much the same thing the cover does.
That being said, nobody has even bothered to do a book like this before, so a BIG kudos to the publishers (and authors) for that... Enough to make a 5, if not for the farcical cover. Therefore, this gets a 4.
If you thought it was rough in the Japanese army..........2005-10-04
I was undecided about which soldier had a rougher life--the Japanese, Soviet, or Chinese soldier. After reading Philip Jowett's "The Chinese Army," I'll vote for the Chinese soldier. One in four soldiers issued a blanket? The virtual lack of a logistics pipeline severely hindered the Chinese Army's effectiveness. What little trickled down to the soldier's unit was often stolen and sold by his officers. No wonder Mao won! China was in a state of civil war since the mid 1920's. Japan needed resources and saw a failed nation as ripe for the picking. After Japan exhausted itself in China, Japan declared war on the rest of the world and was utterly crushed--Chinese soldiers played an important role in that defeat. Afterwards, China resumed its civil war, with the Communists routing the Nationalists. That civil war continues today with the conflict over Taiwan.
"The Chinese Army" covers the Nationalist Chinese Army--and I am abusing the term "army." Most of the Nationalist army was a half-trained peasant rabble that would have felt at home in the 100 Years War. It astounds me that the Chinese managed to survive close to three decades of civil war--with nearly a third of that in a formal declared war against Japan. I'll have to look up the other Chinese army, Mao's.
Details on uniforms and equipment included a series of color plates that are worth the price of the book. The details on unit organization are sketchy--but then, Chinese Army organization was flexible to the extreme. This book is 48 pages long, a bit slimmer than other Osprey products--but then, the Chinese fought a "come as you are" war. Virtually all weapons were either imports or copies of foreign weapons. Uniforms ranged from ordinary peasent garb (and a sack for ammunition--the few cartridges available) to German-based uniforms for Chaing's personal divisions.
I have to respect these tough soldiers. The only thing harder than being a Chinese soldier was being a Chinese peasant.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Magnificent.......2007-03-31
This volume sets a new standard for theoretical rigour and depth for alternative/counterfactual history. It is indispensable for anyone with an interest in the subject, and Chapter One ("Counterfactual Thought Experiments: Why We Can't Live Without Them & How We Must Learn to Live With Them"), should also be considered by any Historiography course that aspires to completeness or theoretical currency. It is absolutely first rate scholarship, and the bibliography offers fertile ground for further exploration.
Book Description
The unique materials properties of GaN-based semiconductors have stimulated a great deal of interest in research and development regarding nitride materials growth and optoelectronic and nitride-based electronic devices. High electron mobility and saturation velocity, high sheet carrier concentration at heterojunction interfaces, high breakdown field, and low thermal impedance of GaN-based films grown over SiC or bulk AlN substrates make nitride-based electronic devices very promising. The chemical inertness of nitrides is another key property.
This volume, written by experts on different aspects of nitride technology, addresses the entire spectrum of issues related to nitride materials and devices, and it will be useful for technologists, scientists, engineers, and graduate students who are working on wide bandgap materials and devices. The book can also be used as a supplementary text for graduate courses on wide bandgap semiconductor technology.
