    Book Description

The new manufacturing environment requires new cost-accounting systems as well as new technology. While some authorities have advocated installing new and untried systems, the authors of this book recommend updating the standard cost system which 85 percent of manufacturing firms have in place. Updating the present system can achieve greater benefits in terms of providing information to managers for decision making. It also allows the organization to avoid disruption to the corporate culture and the cost associated with a new system. The authors show how standard cost systems can be redesigned to measure factors recognized to be important in today's manufacturing environment such as quality, production levels, and throughput. They demonstrate how standard cost systems can foster continuous improvement through dynamic rather than static standards. After examining characteristics of the new manufacturing environment and benefits of upgrading the cost system, ways to update the traditional standard cost system are discussed. Revisions include a unique input-output method of variance analysis, specific metrics related to manufacturing performance, ways to identify cost drivers, and use of dynamic standards. The authors demonstrate how to redesign the information-gathering and reporting system as new manufacturing procedures are put in place. They discuss ways that marketing activities are affected and how to plan plant and equipment expenditures in an automated environment. This book is directed primarily towards accountants and managers needing to improve informational content of accounting data for decision-making purposes. It should also be beneficial to any person within the business firm who either supplies data of this type or uses it, such as project analysts, controllers, managers, and even management trainees. Academicians teaching cost and managerial accounting as well as those teaching production management and financial decision-making courses should find it beneficial as a text supplement or as a primary text in courses dealing with current problems in today's changing manufacturing environment.

        Book Description

Presenting the most relevant statistical and probabilistic technology in observational astronomy, this practical handbook covers classical parametric and non-parametric methods. There is also, however, a strong emphasis on Bayesian solutions and the importance of probability in experimental inference. The book contains many solved examples, and includes over fifty problems, with solutions available on the web via http://books.cambridge.org/0521454166.htm.

5 out of 5 stars Truly practical for astronomers.......2005-03-24

I'm a professional astronomer (remaining anonymous out of shame for my lack of statistical knowledge). I have found this book immensely useful in my data analysis and very straightforward. It is geared toward astronomical research, so is likely not as useful or illuminating for those unfamiliar with our data analysis. The explanations are straightforward and written in a pleasant tone (e.g., the reassuring "That's it." concluding the algorithm for bootstrapping).

If you are involved in professional astronomical research, this is truly practical statistics for you. If you are just casually interested in astronomy or are in another discipline and just want to learn statistics, I'd suggest passing this book by.

        2 out of 5 stars Not happening.......2004-03-12

This book appears to be written for people who already completely understand statistics, in which case they probably don't need this book. I'm someone with a undergrad-level understanding of statistics and astronomy and this book does little to further my understanding of either. I wish the authors had taken more care in explaining the subject matter and notation. I didn't expect this to be an introductory statistics book, but IMHO the word "practical" should not be in the title. Unless you have an advanced understanding of statistics, this book is not helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, not without errors.......2003-07-24

This book is excellent, and will help you with the Chemistry AP test AND your class.

It is, however, riddled with errors. The errors are small, and part of the learning process (I suppose) is finding them, crossing them out, and laughing in delight at your genius. "Planck's constant is 6.63*10^34, NOT 6.63*10^24!! I WIN AGAIN BARKER!" I had quite an adventure with this book, the name Brett Barker will forever be etched in my mind.

My chemistry class was like this. The teacher knew more about her subject than any other teacher I've ever had, but alas, couldn't teach to people of less than average intelligence. She was cursed with knowledge that could not be shared. Hence, I learned close to nothing in the class. I suffered tremendously 2nd semester because of organic chemistry and earned a B.

I still earned a 3 on the AP test, an average, unspectacular, but still PASSING grade. How did I do it? What was my secret? You guessed it - "Arco Master the AP Chemistry Test 2001: Written by Brett Barker." I picked it up 3 weeks before the test, spent over 3 hours a day taking notes on the entire book and doing all of the practice problems. Perhaps if I had gotten it 5 weeks before the test and spent 5 hours a day, I would have gotten a 5.

Get this book BEFORE your class, if you know everything in it you'll get 2 A's and a 5. If only time travel was practical...I could travel back in time and fix my foolish ways.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for a Full Review.......2001-08-10

This book offers an extensive review of the material covered on the AP exam. There are a few typos, but anyone who is even slightly good at chemistry will be able to realize what they actually meant. I would not say that this book is a good one in a last ditch effort to try to squzze some chemistry in your brain. The review is meant to be studied at a moderate pace. In fact none of these prep books can take the place of a solid year of study in a rigorous class with a competent teacher.

Nevertheless it is a very good book. It did help me achieve that 5. I didnt take the practice exams but from the looks of them they seemed to be a good reflection of the test. I actually took real AP tests from past years. Taking actual multiple choice and free-response sections of preious exams coupled with studying this book for a month, and a strong year in chemistry will get anyone a 4 at the very least.

        4 out of 5 stars No index...?.......2001-08-08

I found this book right before taking the AP exam and checked it out of my library hoping it would help. Unfortunately, I did not have much time to study it, but from what I could tell, it was a good book that would have probably been very effective preparation.

The presentation was very nicely done and did not make my eyes ache. The variance in fonts, enlargement of important concepts, and obvious display of sample problems all contributed in keeping me focused. The explanations were pithy but never confusing or vague. I appreciated the reminders and descriptive side boxes for key concepts. In addition to the content, the narrative style was most helpful in its ability to introduce matter in a direct and affable manner without making you feel stupid or overwhelmed.

My only complaint is the way topics are displayed. The chapters are listed in the beginning and there are clear headings throughout; however, this is somewhat difficult for quick reference. An index is indispensable and I wish they would have included one in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Thorough Review But These Caveats:.......2001-04-29

This book does provide a thorough review; however, in my copy there are about 33 pages missing!! If you do buy this great book, check your copy and see if you have pages 87-118.

4 out of 5 stars A review book with clear explanations.......2001-02-25

Unlike most review books of this type, this one delivers a lot of information with in-depth explanations that are clearly written. The author seems to know his audience well, and strives to explain complex material by going over the basics and then building a logical and coherent framework. There is also a lot of emphasis on problem solving, which no doubt will be useful to those taking the AP Chemistry exam. This book probably would be useful for 1st year college chemistry students as well. Overall, this book is one of the better ones in this genre, marred only by a few easily discernable typos.

          Book Description

The book presents a state of the art summary of knowledge on the use of radionuclides to study processes and systems in the continental part of the Earths environment. It is conceived as a companion to the two volumes of this series which deal with isotopes as tracers in the marine environment (Livingston Marine Radioactivity) and with the radioecology of natural and man-made terrestrial systems (Shaw, Radioactivity in Terrestrial Ecosystems). Although the book focuses on natural and anthopogenic radionuclides (radioactive isotopes), it also refers to stable environmental isotopes, which in a variety of application, especially in hydrology and climatology, have to be consulted to evaluate radionuclide measurements in terms of the ages of groundwater and climate archives, respectively.
The basic principles underlying the various applications of natural and anthropogenic radionuclides in environmental studies are described in the first part of the book. The book covers the two major groups of applications: the use of radionuclides as tracers for studying transport and mixing processes: and as time markers to address problems of the dynamics of such systems, manifested often as the so-called residence time in these systems. The applications range from atmospheric pollution studies, via water resource assessments to contributions to global climate change investigation. The third part of the book addresses new challenges in terms of development of new methodological approaches including analytical methods and fields of applications.

Science affects us all-in the words of Albert Einstein, "The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking." It is therefore fascinating to discover the thoughts of scientists, philosophers, humanists, poets, theologians, politicians, and other miscellaneous mortals on this most important of subjects. A Dictionary of Scientific Quotations is a personal selection of scientific quotations by Professor Alan L Mackay that includes graffiti, lines of song, proverbs, and poetry. Whether you believe that "All problems are finally scientific problems" (George Bernard Shaw) or that "Imagination is more important than knowledge" (Einstein), it is without doubt that "It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations" (Churchill). You will be charmed and delighted by this collection and remember, "'Why,'" said the Dodo, "'the best way to explain it is to do it'" (Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll).

5 out of 5 stars not just science:an extraordinarily wonderful reference book.......2005-04-30

This book is one of my favourite books, period. So much so that I keep it at arm's reach beside my dictionaries, but often pick it up to read just for enjoyment. I disagree with the title, because this volume spans everything to do with existence: curiosity, discovery, disappointment, creativity, bureaucracy and government--what you could think would be carefully collected over a number of years by a person with a mind that hates to feel restricted. And this is exactly that. And if you think it's all highbrow stuff, prepare to be surprised. This isn't at all a collection of wisdoms. There is delicious fun here, too, sometimes at the expense of the quoted. As the foreward says, ". . . some quotations or aphorisms are so persuasive and so well put that one wishes one had said them oneself; others are wrong-headed...and others still tell us more about their authors than about their subjects: Hilaire Belloc cannot have intended to make a public exhibition of himself..."
There's even delightful poetry. A truly great book.

The original words announcing great scientific discoveries, from the first 'Eureka!' to the cloning of Dolly the sheep, can all be found in this fascinating addition to the world-famous 'Oxford Quotations' range. An essential reference tool, put together over 15 years with the assistance of a distinguished team of specialist advisers, it includes full author descriptions, exact sources, and a word-finding index for easy reference. Scholarly but accessible, it also presents the human face of science, as scientists reflect on achievements and failures in their own lives and those of others. Darwin not only describes natural selection, but carefully assesses the pros and cons of marriage, while James Clerk Maxwell constructs an electric but poetic Valentine as well as his 'demon'. From Archimedes to Einstein and beyond, the Oxford Dictionary of Scientific Quotations charts the progress of the great ideas of science. 'Schrodinger's wave-mechanics is not a physical theory but a dodge - and a very good dodge too.' Arthur Eddington 'I have little patience with scientists who take a board of wood, look for its thinnest part and drill a great number of holes where drilling is easy.' Albert Einstein 'Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated.' Rosalind Franklin 'I do not feel obliged to believe that that same God who has endowed us with senses, reason, and intellect has intended to forgo their use and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them.' Galileo Galilei 'I try to identify myself with the atoms...I ask what I would do if I were a carbon atom or a sodium atom.' Linus Pauling

              Book Description

Scientists and other keen observers of the natural world sometimes make or write a statement pertaining to scientific activity that is destined to live on beyond the brief period of time for which it was intended. This book serves as a collection of these statements from great philosophers and thought–influencers of science, past and present. Gaither's Dictionary of Scientific Quotations allows the reader quickly to find relevant quotations or citations to spearhead an oral or written presentation of their research. Organized thematically and indexed alphabetically by author, this work makes readily available an unprecedented collection of approximately 21,000 quotations related to a broad range of scientific topics including astronomy, biology, chemistry, engineering, and physics. With its unique thematic organization of the quotations, this book accomplishes its goal of presenting a large array of entries in each discipline and enabling the reader to choose a quotation on a particular subject from a variety of sources and perspectives. The resulting compendium allows the reader to conceptualize and embrace the written images of scientists, laymen, politicians, novelists, playwrights, and poets about humankind’s scientific achievements. Quotations are listed with the credited author, title, chapter, page number, birth/death date and occupation where possible.

Political commentator Kevin Phillips (author of the 1991 bestseller The Politics of Rich and Poor) takes a break from analyzing the latest election returns with this sweeping history of Anglo-American exceptionalism. How did the political culture of Anglo-America rise "from a small Tudor kingdom to a global community and world hegemony"? asks Phillips. His answer comes in the course of studying three wars--the English Civil War, the American Revolution, and the U.S. Civil War. Phillips does not examine the military history of these conflicts, looking instead at the political, religious, economic, and sectional interests that shaped them. He makes several eye-opening observations, comparing, for instance, a "state-by-state portrait of which counties, towns, districts, or regions were loyal" during the American Revolution to "ethnoreligious maps of the modern-day Balkans." This is a hefty book (over 600 pages, not including appendices and footnotes), and while Phillips's preface is a bit self-absorbed, admirers of David Landes's The Wealth and Poverty of Nations and Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel will find much to like between its covers. --John J. Miller

                      Book Description

A strikingly fresh and revisionist explanation for the rise of Anglo-America as the dominant cultural and political force in the world today by the bestselling author of The Politics of Rich and Poor.

The question at the heart of The Cousins' Wars is this: How did Anglo-America evolve over a mere three hundred years from a small Tudor kingdom into a global community with such a hegemonic grip on the world today, while no other European power-Spain, France, Germany, or Russia-did? The answer to this, according to Phillips, lies in a close examination of three internecine English-speaking civil wars-the English Civil War, the American Revolution, and the American Civil War. These wars between cousins functioned as crucial anvils on which various religious, ethnic, and political alliances were hammered out between the English-speaking cousin-nations, setting them on a unique two-track path toward world leadership-one aristocratic and aloof to dominate the imperial nineteenth century and the other more egalitarian and democratic to take over in the twentieth century. They also functioned as unfortunate and deadly cultural crucibles for African Americans, Native Americans, and the Irish.

Phillips's analysis shows exactly how these conflicts are inextricably linked and how they seeded each other. He offers often surprising interpretations that cut across the political spectrum-for instance, that the Constitution of the United States, while brilliant in many respects, was also a fatally flawed political compromise that contributed mightily in setting the stage for the final-and the bloodiest-cousins' war: the American Civil War.

With the new millennium upon us and triggering widespread assessment of our nation's place in world history, The Cousins' Wars provides just the kind of magisterial sweep and revisionist spark to ignite widespread interest and debate. This grand religious, military, and political epic is the multi-dimensional story of the triumph of Anglo-America.

3 out of 5 stars The hidden reality in the story.......2006-06-13

While this book weaves a dramatic tapestry from 1640 t0 1900 and puts Puritan religion at the center of the development of democratic republican government, its hidden lesson is the existence, since well before the Founders, of a virulent anti Catholic sentiment throughout America. In Phillips' narrative the Catholics appear on the wrong side of every issue. Clearly standing with Charles and the Cavaliers against Parliament. Partaking of a massacre in Ireland of Protestants colonists, leading to Cromwell's terrorist response. A response which Phillips seems to , at least, understand.

In the Revolution the few Catholics in the colonies stand aside with Quakers and others while the Congregational Puritans and the Presbyterian Scots Irish win the new nation. The Civil war sees Irish and German Catholics standing against the Republicans, both in America, and for the Irish, in Ireland itself. Little effort is made to explain these stands as a response to the dramatic persecutions imposed on the Irish Catholics in their homeland and America. No mention of the Church burnings of the 1850s, save for the undeniable role the Know Nothings played in the formation of the Republican Party, is made.

In his latest work, American Theocracy" the Catholic Church plays the heavy in Phillips' America. Always seeking to impose its archaic view of reality on a progressive world. So his failure to fully appreciate the hatred of Catholics present in Cromwellian England and Know Nothing America is expected.

One area of interest in Phillips' investigations into the changing Puritan experience is that from the strict, unbending, believers in being God's Chosen people in Engalnd, God's Chosen nation, the Puritans have never lost their belief in the rightness of their cause; Parliament and the cleansing of the Faith, the resistance to sceptre and crown that became the revolution, both in 1688 and 1776, the fight against slavery. But Phillips does not present the New Puritans, not the right wing followers of Jerry Fallwell and Pat Robertson, but the rising tide of the Progressive Left, from the same stock as their forebears, from the same places, New England, with the same intolerance for those who do not share their view, but now with an overriding belief in Man and not God.

3 out of 5 stars Obstacles Of Phillips.......2006-01-13

Mr. Phillips presents a plethora of writing that gives intelligence to any reader.

However, Mr. Phillips presents his data in scatter-brained fashion. This guy needs to learn HOW to write, for he certainly knows WHAT to write.

Perhaps, if he read the Aristotle's Poetics, or better yet a dichpering of the work (Artistotle's Poetics for Screenwriters: Storytelling Secrets from the Greatest Mind in Western Civilization), Mr. Phillips would learn the power of TELLING a STORY.

Instead, this book is a labor of reading. It requires the reader both to take reading notes and to organize thoroughly any reading notes. This is the only way one can pull together a concept of an argument with support.

Wealth and Democracy is another Phillips example of the same. Great data, poor presentation.

1 out of 5 stars Phillips usual garbage.......2004-06-13

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive account of the growth of two empires...........2002-12-31

This book details the amazing parallels between British and American history as no other history book I have ever read has done. With a broad net that includes ethnic politics and religion, Kevin Phillips writes a great account of over 200 years of history on both sides of the Atlantic, detailing how the successive uprisings, the three "Cousins' Wars", were caused in large part by uprisings of Puritanism. A convincing and amazing book.

                      4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Thesis.......2001-11-05

Phillips make a compelling argument that the three wars, English Civil War of 1640, American Revolution of 1776, and American Civil War of 1861, all carry the same dynamics between combatants. Those dynamics, Catholic vs. Protestant, Reformer vs. Conservative, Land Holder vs. Artisan, tumble down from one war to the next, and Phillips does a thorough job of explaining them. However, my only complaint with the book is that he was too thorough. I am an avid reader of history as a hobby, so I am a stranger neither to details in demographics nor dealing with person and place names unfamiliar to me. But I read history because it is fascinating stuff with outrageous personalities and remarkable coincidences, things that fiction simply cannot create and call "plausible". This book was more of a thesis--dry and heavy going.

I recommend the book to those who want to look at these wars, and the relationship between the USA and the UK, in a new light. The conclusions are eye-opening and thought provoking. But the path to getting to those conclusions is a tough one, so I do not recommend this book to those who read history as a happy diversion from daily routine.

                              Book Description

In An Enduring Legacy, brothers John and Mark Bieter chronicle three generations of Basque presence in that state from 1890 to the present, an engaging story that begins with a few solitary sheepherders and follows their evolution into the prominent ethnic community of today.

The first Basques to arrive in Idaho were largely young, single, poor, and illiterate, and most were closely identified with sheepherding. Their cultural, religious, and linguistic differences isolated them from their non-Basque neighbors, and they tended to form connections almost exclusively with other Basques. By the second generation, Idaho's Basques had assimilated in their public lives while preserving their Basque traditions through dances, picnic festivals, and sporting events. Third-generation Basques, mostly fully assimilated, have paralleled the national trend of cultivating the ethnicity of their grandparents, finding in it both a sense of community and a unique personal identity.

As this well-documented history demonstrates, Idaho's Basques have become one of the West's most successful ethnic minorities. But they are also among the most active groups in preserving and cultivating the traditions and culture of their immigrant grandparents by which Idaho's Basques are maintaining their ties with both the traditions of the past and the modern European Basque homeland. They have created a subculture that is neither purely Basque nor purely American. Their experience offers rich insight into the complex process by which immigrants become American while retaining their distinctive cultural identity and roots.

5 out of 5 stars The Basque Diaspora.......2003-04-01

The Brothers Bieter have written a very important chapter in American immigrant history. It boggles the mind to comprehend the forces that brought young men to America from a primarily maritime economy and succesfully transplanted them in the high deserts of Idaho and Nevada as sheepherders. How a network of friends and relatives immigrating over four generations were able to bring their culture's music, dance, games, gastronomy and traditions, adapt them to new circumstances and see the pride exhibited by their children and grandchildren is truly inspiring. The evolution of immigrant Basques into Basque-Americans is a worthy study for any anthropologist, linguist or sociologist.

5 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to Basque America.......2000-10-01

I just finished reading this book. It is a relatively quick read, something I was able to finish in a day. It is a very good read, though, something all decendants of the Basque immigrants to the Western US should read. It gives, in my opinion, a very good idea of what it was like for a young Basque to come to this country and try to make a living. It also describes well the choices the decendants of these immigrants have made to continue the Basque culture. It does so in a very direct way, making me think about my choices and the convenience of the aspects of Basque culture I have chosen to keep alive for myself. In some areas, I wish there was more depth (for example, the discussion of Anaiak Denok, a group I hadn't heard of before), but, overall, it is a very good introduction to what it means to be Basque-American and why some of us choose to identify with both the Basque and American culture. I strongly recommend this book, not only to Americans of Basque decent, but anyone who is interested in the issues of ethnicity in America and why some would choose to be both American and ethnic at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely well done.......2000-09-06

As an amature student of both history and Basque culture I am very impressed with the quality of this work. Both Misters Bieter should be praised for what is both a most interesting and informative book. There is a professional blend of historical theory about the roles of various generations and historical facts and manifested by the various stories, all held together by the ongoing saga of the Bilbao family. This is good history writing. I don't know if this kind of book can win prizes or awards, but if so this one deserves to do so.

5 out of 5 stars Informative Account of the Basque in Idaho.......2000-08-27

While most Americans have studied the immigration of Europeans to the United States, our knowledge of the Basque immigration is limited. The Bieters have written a well-researched and informative account of the Basque journey from Spain to the United States. The book, packed with personal anecdotes of Basque immigrants, belongs on the bookshelf of every American history enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Great insight to the Basque in Idaho!.......2000-08-22

Being of Basque decent myself, I try to read and collect as many books about my heritage as possible. The Bieters' have extensive knowledge and insight to show the development of the Basque in the beautiful state of Idaho. Following the journey they have told, I can relate it to the journey of my Basque ancestors. It is a wonderful look at a wonderful culture.
