Book Description

How can we value an enterprise that has no earnings or cash flows, so that traditional and conventional valuation techniques are therefore not applicable? This book addresses the problem, and presents a model for valuing enterprises that may have no existing assets but only growth opportunities.

This book appears to be a hastily published version of the author's 1998 doctorate work (the Zicklin School of Business/Baruch College/CUNY). Technically, the book may be excellent. However, my first impression of the book is very unsettling. The copy that I received is bound/embossed backwards (compared to most books). There are so many grammatical errors that it causes one to question the accuracy of the numerous equations. Hopefully, a different editor proofed the equations than the one that proofed the text. Finally, very many references are NOT included in the bibliography. For example, see note 20 on page 25: neither Lander and Pinches (1998) nor Trigeogis (1995) are included. I have returned the book.

Book Description

This book fills the huge gap between what companies and clients expect from coaching and what it actually does for them. Zeroing in on this popular technique to develop today's leaders, improve performance, and facilitate change, the book shows how to deliver coaching that helps anyone achieve extraordinary results.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Coaching Book I've Read.......2005-08-03

What I like about this book are the concrete examples they give of "almost" coaching and best coaching. The best coaching book I've read. Recommended it to all laypeople looking to be better coaches.

5 out of 5 stars Research-Based Approach Raises Coaching to a New Level.......2003-10-13

Over the past decade, the concept of coaching in the business world has become so ingrained that it's part of the landscape. A wide range of conversations, methods of feedback delivery, and relationships have been accepted as coaching in a rather loose collection of techniques...and results. As we move into an increasingly challenging period for employers, leaders must become substantially more effective at this process we describe as coaching. A whole new generation of leaders must be taught, coached, and brought to a higher level of performance.

Bacon and Spears, experienced in coaching more than 2,000 individual clients in Fortune 500 companies, share their knowledge and experience. Their researched-based approach emphasizes the skills needed by coaches and that coaching styles must be adapted to what the client needs. The eight styles they identify are directive (teacher, parent, manager, philosopher) and non-directive (facilitator, counselor, colleague, mentor). This model alone will expand, deepen, and enrich the work done by the vast majority of coaches in the corporate world.

The book offers even more, delivering checklists, assessment tools, tips and tools, and a wealth of sample coach-client dialogues. Recognizing the special opportunities the future will hold, the authors include insights into coaching across cultures, across generations, as well as coaching women, minorities, and C-level executives.

An epilogue with even more perspectives adds value to this volume, as do the reference section and comprehensive index. This is not a book for readers who simply want to gain a few insights into improving their coaching effectiveness. You'll learn, but you'll be overwhelmed. Adaptive Coaching is like a college textbook on the topic. It's a heavy, deep, and thorough treatment with relatively small type. The $39.95 price suggests that this is more than the average airplane reading management book...and it is. If you're serious about the critical and fine art of coaching in the complicated corporate environment, you'll gain considerable knowledge, insight, and growth from this book.

Side note: I am the author of Impending Crisis: Too Many Jobs, Too Few People. As a workforce futurist, I see what's coming... including a dangerous dearth of leadership. Application of the principles in this book will help today's leaders strengthen each other and the next generation of leaders.

          Book Description

Closely follows an actual structural determination. After some introductory material on the nature of x-rays, the diffraction process, and the internal geometry of crystals, the selection and preparation of a crystal are considered. Techniques of measuring raw x-ray data are covered, plus their reduction into a useable form. The second part discusses both traditional and novel methods of solving the ``phase'' problem, the principal difficulty in x-ray structure determination. The third part considers how to extract the most information from the data and how to evaluate its reliability. Finally, there is a discussion of sources of error in practice and interpretation.

4 out of 5 stars introduction to the basics, at least in theory.......2002-02-21

This book is an excellent excellent introction to the basic physics and math of x-ray crystallography. This was used as the text in an undergrad class I took on protein crystallography and it was perfect for that purpose. The main drawback of this book is that it is really concentrated on small molecule structure determination, and doesn't address the problems or specific techniques used for large protein structures. So probably the best way to use this book would be in conjuction with a more protein-specific book. But for the raw fundamentals of symmetry and diffraction, I don't think you can beat stout & jensen.

One of the great mysteries is what happened to the dinosaurs, and it has taken great detective work to give us an answer. In T. Rex and the Crater of Doom, some brilliant, not to mention determined, scientists roam the world and seek out the clues. What they conclude is that the earth withstood a colossal impact with a meteor (or perhaps a comet) 65 million years ago. The resulting cataclysm destroyed half the life on the planet.

Walter Alvarez, a geologist at the University of California at Berkeley, and one of the four scientists who present this theory on the mystery, tells the story in a clear narrative that contains a wealth of scientific material. The book does require an investment of attention, but the presentation is quite readable, and the story itself is fascinating.

          Book Description

Sixty-five million years ago a gigantic comet or asteroid as big as Mount Everest slammed into the Yucatan Peninsula, creating an explosion on impact equivalent to the detonation of a hundred million hydrogen bombs. It produced a cloud of roiling debris that blackened the sky for months as well as other geologic disasters--and triggered the demise of Tyrannosaurus rex.

We know what happened largely because Walter Alvarez--synthesizing the findings of experts from a variety of scientific fields--has written a gripping story of the decades-long search for the cause of the dinosaurs' extinction. Painstakingly assembling clues from the Italian Apennines and the depths of the Pacific and presenting them with the excitement of a great novel, T. rex and the Crater of Doom is a book of undeniable importance and irresistible appeal by a major figure in contemporary science.

"Engaging and witty. Read Alvarez for and excellent account of how scientists pose questions and seek to solve them."--Scientific American

"First-rate...Alvarez provides the up-close tale of the comet or asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs."--San Francisco Chronicle

          5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-05-03

Don't know what else to say. If you like geology, science, natural history, dinosaurs,... any of the above? Read it!

          5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2006-08-25

Great account of the evolution of the meteor impact theory of mass extinction. He provides a detailed account of the scientific processes involved in the discovery of the Chixulub crater and its relation to the end of the Cretaceous period. As a scientist in another field, I found it to be very informative for the lay reader (non-paleontologist/geologist, etc.).

1 out of 5 stars Mr. Rex and his pointless facility.......2006-06-10

So, our temporarily old Mr. Rex sees that a book consisting entirely of combat will show you a hill that floats! Not since 1937. "In such a long time, he thinks that it really develops in circumference, which is all it will ever be." So he says, anyway. Sadly, this stuff used to be quite numerous in the market and he (the author) was different from what he says he is today, when the book is no longer being sold. How sad. This dog will cry and cry as you try to head off the exposure of this author who is far more different than you can imagine. Let him prove the contents of his own book and then let's see him leave some petal larger than itself, and maybe in some interview with temporary old Mr. Rex and his floating hill, we will see that it is time to increase the form of our philosophy, which might eventually rehabilitate objective analysis. Yes, sure, that will be the day! Then how come nobody thought to be careful in their principal object, which might be found at the very end of the book. You, along with "old" Mr. Rex, will discover this book to be indispensible if you care about profit and loss, like the author(s). Like his hill, he floats under the thought, not over it, and when he wants the growth, he extends himself laterally.

To read this book cover to cover is to be astonished about rumors of its re-publication. But, to date, the remainder piles burst any hope of a revision. The sly old dog inside the bookshop actually hopes that BallentineBooks will try to publish each one, page by page, as a "real" book made up of 256 versions of the same small page. Your risk of testing your confidence in it is minimal. As a reading device, it compares well with Dick and Jane books in terms of profit and loss or some other pointless facility. At one point he even compares gold and the chart, together. This is what he calls "being rehabilitated," and it modifies the entire thing. The critics spoke about the fact that he defends his track record as some kind of "interior research", when in fact it is a plain old criminal record, the risks of which we will all have to carry together. If he wishes to make his company legitimate, maybe this book can be in a company of one.

5 out of 5 stars This subject isn't written in stone - yet .......2006-04-25

I started reading Vincent Courtillot's Evolutionary Catastrophes (volcanism) first in order to gain a handle on the mass extinction argument and found that this book challenges Walter Alvarez's book T. Rex And The Crater of Doom (comet or asteroid bombardment). Therefore, I started reading that at the same time; which got me to pull out and start skimming David Levy's Impact Jupiter (comet expert). In the meantime, I thought it prudent to start reading The Behavior of the Earth by Claude Allegre (plate tectonics), and picked up Steven Stanley's book Extinction (global climate change). Recently I saw via a Google search that Linda Elkins-Tanton now thinks that perhaps meteorite bombardment could have allowed hot magma to vent thus causing global climate change and hence the mass extinctions. This is fun!

4 out of 5 stars This is the one that started it all..........2005-12-01

This is the book that started it all: Dinosaur extinction by bolide from outer space. Catastrophic tsunamis. Intercontinental ejecta layer. Geologic evidence everywhere you look once you know where to look. And the laughingstock of serious geologists everywhere until the evidence started mounting up to where it couldn't be ignored.

This is the story of Walter Alvarez and his colleagues and their careful science that yielded ideas, insights, and then, whammo! the Big Idea that there might be an external component to the extinction of dinosaurs 65 million years ago. It is a forensic mystery worthy of "CSI" except this is the real deal, and the slog work of doing research took this band of scientists all over the world in search of enlightenment. Leveraging new developments in dating techniques and the best minds in the field and out of it (did I mention that Walter Alvarez is the son of Luis Alvarez, the Nobel Award winner for physics?), the adventure is somewhat stalled until the discovery of oil company drilling cores from the Chixulub region of Mexico that confirm evidence of an impact in that region. It is an eleventh-hour discovery just as interest is waning and funding is running out - a development worthy of the "Nova" episode that it eventually became.

As much fun as it is to read mysteries, it is equally fun to read about the real-life trials and tribulations of a band of intrepid individuals who have a hypothesis and then are able to methodically test it, with startling results. One of the joys of this book is Alvarez's generosity toward those whose work supported him and propelled him forward, as well as his occasional head-scratching humility. This really isn't a vanity piece but it is a definite good read.

              Book Description

The workshop has reviewed progress towards the future generation of neutrino oscillation experiments. These experiments will use very intense conventional neutrino beams and novel beams derived from muons or radioactive nuclei. These new facilities will provide a broad research front including muon physics and neutrino scattering experiments. The main technical challenges involve construction of very intense proton beams, targeting, effective capture of produced particles, cooling and subsequent acceleration of the resulting muons.

                Book Description

Monte Cassino opens in the cold Italian winter of 1943-44. Germany would lose the war, but they still held much of Italy, leaving the Allies to fight their way north to capture Rome-a route no army had taken since Hannibal traversed the Alps to avoid it. And overlooking the only possible passage stood the ancient Abbey of Monte Cassino. The ultimate decision to bomb Monte Cassino was one of the most controversial-and tragic-events of World War II. The combat that followed was just as tragic: Soldiers from more than a dozen nations fought through that savage winter in a ferocious battle that allowed no advance or retreat. Here Hapgood and Richardson examine the military operations and political machinations that led inexorably to the bombing, explore the personalities of all involved, and in a new afterword reflect on its lingering consequences. This is an epic tale of men-and monks-at war.

2 out of 5 stars Parker book on Monte Cassino Superior-This is a perfect book for a WWII assignment- if you do not care for military history.......2006-08-07

If you are interested in the Battle of Monte Cassino "Monte Cassino: The Hardest Fought Battle of World War II" by Matthew Parker is the superior read.

Hapgood's book does not delve deeply into the combat and is hardly a military history at all. Instead it focuses on some German Officer who saved the art in the Cassino from Goring and the Allies.

Hapgood's focus was on "human interest" stories, which proved none to interesting for a reader who was seeking detailed analysis on the actual battle.

This book would be perfect for someone interested in the daily minutes of some guy sifting through ruins, stonewalling his superiors, organizing convoys and yammering away with Papal representatives.

Do not pick up this book and expect an in-depth treatment on the most "The Most Controversial Battle". For Hapgood's controversey lay within the realms of renaissance art and not the failure to support the brilliant French Offensive.

The composition of the colorful, courageous and multinational Allied Army, the formidable nature of the Cassino bastion, the fate of those caught in the villages, the miserable conditions and sheer brutality of the fighting are the subjects that require the most detail and research for a book on Monte Cassino that has any aspirations.

But the author instead cherry picked a couple topics and stretched them to the breaking point. And these topics were not particularly germaine to the conflict that claimed the lives of so many. He could have covered these issues of secondary and tertiary importance to the battle itself in a chapter or so. But it is the battle itself, the equipment, the geography, and the men under arms who get the abridged coverage.

I will concede if someone was really interested in Art History, and Nazi looting this book would be a compelling read. The prose is fine. It is the subject matter, emphasis and organization that are lacking. It would be a perfect book to read for a book review- provided student not interested in military history and has to somehow fulfill this requirement. Many do not share my zeal for military history and would probably find this book sufficient.

Hapgood's attention was riveted on matters he considered interesting and "controversial". If it was not so drawn out it would have been informative. But this myopic approach gave the short shrift to the fundamental components of the Battle of Monte Cassino. Human interest stories, no matter how compelling, can never outshine grueling and pivotal events in history.

5 out of 5 stars Good history with personal points of view.......2004-11-09

This book is a good overview of the battle but also takes the reader to the personal level with the Germans, Allies as well as the monks who were caught in the battle.

                  Book Description

For hundreds of years, Ireland has been a testing ground for colonizing techniques. Postcolonial Dublin shows how perpetrators of colonialism have made use of urban planning and architecture to underscore and legitimate ideologies. From suburban development to building facades, the conflict between nationalists and colonialists has inscribed itself on Dublin’s landscape. Andrew Kincaid illustrates how the architecture and urban planning of Dublin have been integral to debates about nationalism, modernism, and Ireland’s relationship to the rest of the world. Looking at objects such as Londonderry’s Market House, Patrick Abercrombie’s Dublin of the Future, and the urban renewal project of today’s Temple Bar, Kincaid highlights Ireland’s colonial history and the significance of architecture in the evolution of national identity. In doing so, he demonstrates how ideology “spatializes” itself. Postcolonial Dublin engages the prevailing historical representations of Irish nationalism, arguing that the evolving city reflected a debate over who would hold the reins of power. Bringing the tools of literary criticism and postcolonial theory to bear on the field of urban studies, Kincaid places Dublin at the forefront of debates over modernism, modernity, and globalization. Andrew Kincaid is assistant professor of English at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

                  Book Description

The Ottoman Empire ranks alongside the Roman and Byzantine as one of the most powerful and long-lasting imperial systems in world history. In existence from the late thirteenth century until 1923 and embracing at its height most of Southeastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, it was certainly the most imposing and arguably the most influential political system over the course of more than a millennium of Islamic history.

Though the Ottoman Empire left an indelible mark on people in many parts of the world, in the modern West its influence is little understood. For many living in former Ottoman-controlled regions, this heritage is often rejected or misrepresented as unwanted alien domination. Imperial Legacy gathers together distinguished scholars to demonstrate how the Ottoman legacy continues to shape patterns of behavior and perception among the peoples of Western Asia, Northern Africa, and Southeastern Europe. The authors also explore how this complex history is reinscribed by nations and ethnic groups in the building of ideologies and identities today.

Ranging widely through issues including politics, diplomacy, education, language, and religion, these essays also address the different regional perspectives on the Ottoman Legacy found in the Arab world, the Balkans, and the Republic of Turkey.

Imperial Legacy enriches our understanding of the Ottoman past and provides needed insights into the post-Ottoman present.

                  4 out of 5 stars Imperial Legacy.......2001-07-27

"In the Valhalla of past empires, the Ottomans should rank high. In actual fact few major political systems have been so consistently ignored or misrepresented." Imperial Legacy represents an attempt to right this wrong by assessing the Ottoman legacy many decades after its passing in those lands where the padishah once ruled; the editor dubs it "a collection of briefs for the court of history."

The results can hardly be gainsaid. In chapters on one arena after another-state boundaries, administration, diplomacy, the Arabic and Turkish languages, economics, military matters, Islam, and education-the authors show the wide, sometimes pervasive, impact of Ottoman institutions and practices. This hardly comes as a surprise, given that the empire lasted over six hundred years, but the point does emphatically need making, and a luminary cast (Halil Inalcýk, Charles Issawi, Geoffrey Lewis, Bernard Lewis, André Raymond, Dankwart Rustow) effectively does so.

Brown, professor emeritus at Princeton University, has emerged in the last decade as the Middle East's historian with the widest vision. His International Politics and the Middle East: Old Rules, Dangerous Game (Princeton University Press, 1984) is a path-breaking effort to find patterns in diplomacy over the past two centuries; and a multi-authored volume (co-edited with Cyril E. Black), Modernization in the Middle East: The Ottoman Empire and Its Afro-Asian Successors (Darwin Press, 1993) ambitiously seeks to interpret the whole of modern Middle Eastern history.

4 out of 5 stars Very timely, scientific, relevant and looks beyond cliches........1999-08-01

Imperial Legacy, composing of various chapters contributed by numerous Ottoman experts, sheds light, especially for non-academicians, on the legacy of a great empire and its imprint on current Middle East, Balkan, Caucases and North Africa geopolitics, culture, religion and daily life. Most revealing is how the Ottoman history is not synonomous with Turkish history. Rather, it is a history of a particular dynasty, and the history of the peoples, of numerous religious, ethnic and racial background it ruled over centuries. It is a history of Greeks, Armenians, Arabs, Serbs, Albanians, and many others. In an effort to distance themselves from the Ottoman past, which was the anti-thesis of that most powerful 19th century invention of nation-state, all nations that have emerged from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire have very diligently and actively ignored or denied the Ottoman heritage. Most zealous among them was the new Republic of Turkey of course. In many cases the legacy is very tangible and measurable, like the current political and ethnic borders of lands that directly or indirectly, at some time or another, came under Ottoman rule. In other cases, it is intangible but very omnipresent, like very centralized governments, elite bureaucrats, lack of noble classes, administrative traditions, obsession with internal peace at any cost etc.. In other cases, the legacy is there by its absence, like lack of strong free markets, industrial and technological underdevelopment. It is a delicate matter though at times to seperate the pre-Ottoman traditions that Ottomans absorbed and carried over from Byzantine and Seljuk empires, or very regional characterisitcs that can not be attributed to Ottomans solely, from the true and unique imprints of the Ottoman Empire. The various facets of the legacy is investigated at some depth, albeit very unevenly in each chapter. While Maria Todorova dives into phlisophy and theory of history in the 4th Chapter on Balkans, Norman Itzkowitz gives a very superficial treatment in Chapter 3. Present day perceptions, impact on Arab world and Balkans, administarative and diplomatic heritage, language, education, economics and cultural legacies have been specifically treated with adequate references. The militray subject was very lightly covered given its enourmous significance for the Ottomans. The imprint on the modern Turkish history and how the young Turks, CUP and CHP and their struggles with opposing forces play out and shape politics in Turkey even today, does not get the focus it obviously deserves. Two other areas left out of the picture were music and architecture. They do fall a little out of the area of expertise of the historians contributing to the book but still, Classical Turkish Music is a very living part of the Ottoman legacy. It exists solely because of the imperial heritage, and it has been refined over the centuries by very significant contributions from non-Turks and non-muslims alike. There are experts who could have been called on to fill these gaps. In short, a very timely and relevant book. A topic that was very difficult to treat objectively due to the prejudice and heavy emotions surrounding the expansion of the Ottoman Empire and its disasterous end, has been bravely and squarely faced. It promises to be a very rich area of investigation and research in the future too.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best book on this topic but still good.......2000-03-30

Maybe the most important thing to note about this book is that it was written in 1988, and research on mind and brain have expanded a lot since then. Which isn't to say the material here is wrong, just that it doesn't include the very latest advances.

Still, ya gotta start somewhere, and this book isn't a bad one to read along the way.

Gazzaniga tells stories illustrating how fiddling with some specific part of the brain, or some brain chemical, produces distinct effects on a person's behavior and experience. He also discusses how fiddling with someone's experiences creates distinct effects on that person's brain, behavior, and other experiences. He covers Anxiety, Pain, Addictions, Love....

Gazzaniga concludes with some words about what these research findings mean about how we should live our lives. He urges us to avoid oversimplifying, to avoid thinking either that genes control everything or experience controls everything. He argues that the pattern is circular -- brain affects experience and experience affects brain -- so that neither comes first, and he talks about how change can happen (how to break into this cycle). For that alone, it's worth the read.

". . . a very solid, interesting, and significant contribution to environmental knowledge about the Coastal Bend of Texas. . . . It will make an excellent companion volume to their Matagorda book." --Robin W. Doughty, author of Return of the Whooping Crane and The Mockingbird Widely known as the wintering grounds of the world's largest wild flock of endangered whooping cranes, the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge attracts thousands of visitors to the Texas Gulf Coast each year, from casual birdwatchers to professional scientists. This naturalist's guide offers a comprehensive overview of the natural and cultural history of Aransas, taking an ecological approach to show how the plants, animals, land, and sea form a living web that sustains an amazing diversity of creatures. Individual chapters discuss the land itself, the whooping cranes and other endangered species, game animals, introduced species, mammals, birds, herptiles, fish, invertebrates, and woody and herbaceous plants. With this information, visitors to the refuge and everyone interested in the natural history of the Texas Gulf Coast will enrich their knowledge of this environmentally crucial region.
