    Book Description

The valuation of intangible assets has become a central issue in the practice of management. When companies undertake alliances or licensing agreements, effect mergers, sell or purchase brands, or evaluate R&D projects, a key issue is how each party puts a financial value on the intangible contribution. Valuations also have a tax implication, particularly in transnational operations. The contributors, including academics from five nations and expert practitioners from leading accounting and consulting companies, cover intellectual property strategy of global firms, valuation of human capital, and valuation techniques for the transfer or sale of brands, licenses, and other intangible assets. In addition, the contributors address the special needs of the software and pharmaceutical sectors in separate chapters. This book includes tools, metrics, and models that are of interest to academics as well as global executives. Recommended for valuation experts, scholars, international tax specialists, executives (especially those involved in alliance negotiations, brand equity, mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, and intellectual property management), and officials in such supranational institutions as the EU, OECD, UNCTAD, WTO, IMF, and World Bank.

Plus, it includes completely new information on the changing relationships between customers and suppliers--and the impact these changes have had on sales channels

3 out of 5 stars Learn about Reps with a flavor of editorial bias.......2001-09-25

Novick digs into the do's and don'ts of selling through independent reps (his title is aptly used). Instead of focusing solely on the virtues of independent reps and how to implement their use into a marketing plan, he develops a kind of arguement of independent reps vs. direct selling. At each turn, instead of just giving a straight and open picture, he spends time exploring the pros and cons of both direct sales and reps. I think he made his case well in the first chapter, but he keeps revisiting the main argument, causing me to think that one of his book's main thesis' is, "Why independent reps are more effective than a direct sales force." Considering where his background is, one can easily see his bias.
Despite these marginal qualities, Novick possesses a great store of knowledge, which he gives to the reader of how to find, attract, and keep superior reps. Overall, a good book for the inquisitive marketer, but some parts are worth glossing over.

        Book Description

One of the wonders of the universe we live in is the Milky Way. It spans the entire sky and can be seen every night of the year from anywhere on Earth. This is the first book that deals specifically with what can be seen within the Milky Way from a practical observer's point of view. Astronomy of the Milky Way covers every constellation that the Milky Way passes through, and describes in detail the many objects that can be found therein, including stars, double and multiple stars, emission nebulae, planetary nebulae, dark nebulae and supernovae remnants, open and galactic clusters, and galaxies. It also describes the one thing that is often left out of observing guides - the amazing star clouds of the Milky Way itself. It is one of a two-volume set that deal with the entire Milky Way - this second volume looks at what can be seen predominantly from the Southern skies. In addition to the descriptive text there are many star charts and maps, as well as the latest up-to-date images made by observatories around the world and in space, as well as images taken by amateur astronomers. Equipped with this book, an amateur astronomer can go out on any clear night of the year and observe the galaxy we live in - The Milky Way.

                    Book Description

This book analyses the geometrical aspects of the simplicial quantum gravity model known as the dynamical triangulations approach. A compact and convenient account is given both to introduce the non-expert reader to the spirit of the subject and to provide a well-chosen mathematical route to the heart of the matter for the expert. The techniques described are novel and allow points of current interest in the subject of simplicial quantum gravity to be addressed. Linear manifolds and entropy estimates of the number of triangulations of 3and 4-manifolds are discussed. Continuum physics is recovered through scaling limits and computer simulation is used to study simplicial quantum gravity extensively. The beginner will appreciate the introduction to the field, the expert a comprehensive account of recent results and developments.

5 out of 5 stars Great political mystery/comedy!.......2004-10-07

Jim Ryan's "Kiss the First Lady Goodnight" was a real thrill to read. The author swept me right into the mystery of the murder of the ex-Lirst Lady, a search that involves political intrigue, blackmail, and a host of suspects as Jim O'Hara, a Public Defender, searches through the clues, even when his desire to get to the truth could mean the end of his own life. Good characterizations and settings, plus a great plot and a marvelous touch of humor, make this book a real keeper.

When I finished this (much too short) story of murder and sex and greed and...well, it's got just about everything in it, I wanted more, more, more! More stories about the cavalier O'Hara and his colorful plotmates. More stories about other characters O'Hara met when he was doing his "time" at the country club lock-up. And more of the same juice that kept me turning page after page after page to see what ugly heads would arise next and just how O'Hara would handle situations that almost guaranteed he'd end up "sleeping with the fish." It's obvious that Author Jim Ryan knows his way around the judicial system, big government and the underbelly of life, and understands just how tight to weave the tension to keep his readers intrigued throughout. More, please!

4 out of 5 stars "Kiss the First Lady Goodnight" works as a story.......2003-11-20

Loved the book; a story of a former First Lady, Ex-New Jersey Senator who, after indictment and jail is found murdered in a Fort Lauderdale pet store. Think naked Janet Reno and you'll understand where this twisted author takes the reader. As one review said: "Hillarious"! Great character development, good story around the Public Defender character. I would highly recommend it.

I loved Chris Buckley's book "No Way to Treat a First Lady," (where the First Lady is accused of killing the President). This reminds me of Buckley's book.

                    Book Description

Sons of Privilege traces the wartime experiences of a unique Confederate cavalry company drawn together from South Carolina's most prestigious families of planters, merchants, and politicos. Founded in 1792 as a city militia unit, the Charleston Light Dragoons drew from such locally recognizable clans as the Hugers, Izards, Manigaults, Middletons, and Pringles. W. Eric Emerson examines the military exploits of this "company of gentlemen" to find that the elite status of its membership dictated the terms of their service. For much of the war, the dragoons were stationed close to home and faced little immediate danger. As the South's resources waned, however, such deference faded.

Organized much like a gentleman's social club, the dragoons differed markedly from most units in the Confederate and Union armies, which brought together men of varying social and economic backgrounds. Emerson vividly depicts the dragoons' two assignments—a relatively undemanding stint along the South Carolina coast and a subsequent few weeks of intense combat in Virginia. Recounting the unit's 1864 baptism by fire at the Battle of Haw's Shop, he suggests that the dragoons' unrealistic expectations about their military prowess led the men to fight with more bravery than discretion. Thus the unit suffered heavy losses, and by 1865 only a handful survived.

Emerson tracks the return of the survivors to ruined homes and businesses, the struggle to rebuild lost fortunes, and the resurrection of exclusive social organizations that would separate them from Charleston's more prosperous newcomers. He chronicles efforts of veterans to reestablish the unit and evaluates the influence of writings by survivors on the postwar veneration of the dragoons.

4 out of 5 stars Charleston Light Dragoons.......2007-03-20

Most all of the information I was seeking about ancestors in the Civil War was verified by this book. It is a fascinating well written account of the war record of the Charleston Light Dragoons.

5 out of 5 stars "Sons Of Privilege" is a compelling read.......2006-04-18

When I first learned of Sons of Privilege: The Charleston Light Dragoons in the Civil War, it sounded mildly interesting but I didn't buy it.

A few months later, I bought a copy and found myself glued to it until finished. It's an interesting, compelling story that is presented fairly and in a straightforward manner, with neither sarcasm nor glorification of the Charleston Light Dragoons, who enjoyed a privileged existence within the Confederate Army for most of the war.

                    It's very well done.

5 out of 5 stars A Military and Social Elite.......2006-01-25

Eric Emerson has taken an in-depth look at a fascinating Confederate unit. The Charleston Light Dragoons were pedigreed men on thoroughbred horses, drawn from Charleston's aristocracy and assigned to a low-intensity theater on the South Carolina coast for most of the war - until thrown into the meatgrinder in northern Virginia in 1864.

Emerson has done a tremendous amount of research and puts it to excellent use giving the reader a fine sense of the world these men lived in. It should be stressed that the CLD's were an anomalous unit; their ranks were so exclusive that men resigned officers' commissions in other units to serve as ordinary enlisted Dragoons, while others served briefly in the Dragoons as a stepping-stone to prestige in other units - a resume-builder, as it were. Emerson demonstrates very well the "privileged" status the title refers to, in the men's flauting of military discipline and natural assumption of social superiority even over fellow Confederate cavalry.

He does not, however, denigrate the noblesse-oblige which was the flip side of that privilege, and faithfully chronicles the valiant service the "Drags" would put in when faced with the horrors of late-war campaigns. It would be hard to assert the War was not a "Rich Man's Fight" as well, after any honest look at their battlefield performance and the "butcher's bill" they paid.

If this book has a flaw - and you do have to hunt to find one - it is perhaps in an emphasis on "class" which occasionally protests a bit too much. The lax discipline of the "Drags" as a prewar militia unit which behaves more like a college fraternity, is a case in point; while the anecdotes are amusing and instructive, they hardly prove that OTHER militia units drawn from lower classes took their peacetime drills much more seriously. The Dragoons were doubtless drinking more expensive beverages, but they were hardly unique in letting drills degenerate into revelry.

However, Emerson DOES certainly demonstrate the unique status of the Charleston Light Dragoons in other ways, and has done a great service in chronicling the service and adding depth to the interpretation of a socially AND militarily fascinating Confederate unit.
