Every once in awhile, a book is crafted that helps a reader see the smaller picture in context of the larger picture. This is such a book. Jeanne Palmer does a terrific job at walking the reader through decision trees around HR career strategies and tactics. She makes it easy to understand the "who, what, when, where, why and hows" of the Human Resources world, and makes plain what is often seen as complicated or elusive. In my world of executive search, she has given me greater understanding of the HR professionals with whom we interface on a daily basis. I would recommend this book to anyone who works in the human capital industry.

        Book Description

Solar sailing offers the possibility of low-cost long-distance missions, impossible for any other type of conventional spacecraft. The book provides a detailed account of solar sailing, at a high technical level but in a way accessible to the scientifically informed layman. Solar sail orbital dynamics and solar radiation pressure form the foundations of the book, but the engineering design of solar sails is also considered, along with potential mission applications. This book introduces the subject and at the same time provides a technical reference source.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ready about! .......2004-12-28

This is an excellent book on solar sailing. What I like best about it is that it gives not only useful results for several mission application case studies but the means to derive those results for oneself.

The book begins with a history of the topic and some possible applications, as well as some brief comparisons with other forms of propulsion and a couple of important performance metrics (in particular, the characteristic acceleration). Next is a discussion of radiation pressure, where we start by being carefully walked through the calculation of the force on a perfectly reflecting sail. That gets us in the right mood to examine radiative transfer methods, effects of a non-zero area for the solar disc, and solar sail force models for realistic sails.

After that, McInnes discusses solar sail design parameters, sail materials, sail structures, and sail configurations. That includes an excellent introduction to packing, deployment, and control issues.

Now we get to my favorite chapters: solar sail orbital dynamics, for both Keplerian and non-Keplerian orbits (both Sun-centered and planet-centered). The whole point of using solar sails is to make good use of a small but constant thrust, so a main application is to "levitate" the orbit above the Sun or above a planet. McInnes examines the characteristics, controllabilty, and stability of some of these orbits. And he then obtains results for orbits near Lagrange points (both planetary and lunar).

Few books in any field do as good a job at getting the reader up to speed on a topic. A person who has completed this book ought to be able to delve into any of the most recent literature in the field without fear.

5 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive source on solar sailing.......1999-11-11

"Solar Sailing" is the most comprehensive book yet written on solar sailing. This is suggested by the introduction, which gives the history of solar sailing, discusses the basic principles, summarizes the topics of the rest of the book, and concludes with a rich list of references to further material. What follows are six more chapters that delve into the topics of solar sailing: solar radiation pressure, design, orbital mechanics, non-Keplerian orbits, mission applications, and laser sailing. In addition to being an excellent resource on both basic and advanced solar sailing principles, "Solar Sailing" also provides the very latest information on mission applications which are under study right now in chapter 6, like the Geostorm mission for early detection of geomagnetic storms and the sun-synchronous Mercury orbiter. Chapter 3, in addition to discussing solar sail design, describes several historical solar sail designs, mostly from the race to the moon and Mars proposed for the early 1990's.

Each chapter begins with an introduction to the concepts, then discusses them in increasing detail, starting with basic concepts that a beginner or enthusiast can use, and ending with topics that are useful for a detailed engineering analysis. A Equations are provided at every level, so a reader can immediately begin using the material in the book to study solar sailing for themselves. For example, the chapter on radiation pressure begins with a the history of the topic and quantum and electromagnetic explanations for light pressure. Following this are increasingly detailed discussions of the force acting on a solar sail, ranging from perfectly flat and reflective sails and treating the sun as a point, to radiative transfer methods for treating the sun as a disk-shaped light source and curved sails with imperfect reflection.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in solar sailing, from beginners to professionals. Although some of the material in this book can be found in other sources, like technical journals, this book organizes the information in a form that is immediately useful, and covers the basics required to understand the more advanced topics.

        Book Description

This book presents a quantitative treatment of the theory and natural variations of light stable isotopes. It discusses isotope distribution in the context of fractionation processes, thermodynamics, mass conservation, exchange kinetics, and diffusion theory, and includes more than 100 original equations. The theoretical principles are illustrated with natural examples that emphasize oxygen and hydrogen isotope variations in natural waters, terrestrial and extraterrestrial rocks, and hydrothermal systems. New data on meteoric precipitation, rivers, springs, formation fluids, and hydrothermal systems are included in relation to various natural phenomena. Essentially, this book seeks to reconnect the diverse phenomenological observations of isotope distribution to the quantitative theories of physical chemistry and the language of differential equations. It may serve as a textbook for advanced students, as a research reference, or as a quick source of information. The book is organized into five chapters, each followed by suggested quantitative problems and a short reference list. The three theoretical chapters progress from an elementary review of the physical chemistry of stable isotopes, to the thermodynamics of isotopic compounds, and finally to the calculation of isotope distribution in dynamic systems. The third and fifth chapters emphasize oxygen and hydrogen isotope variations in Earth's hydrosphere and lithosphere, constituting the most important examples of the theoretical principles. Appendices provide data on atomic weights of light elements, physical constants, mathematical relationships, and isotopic fractionation factors.

4 out of 5 stars More than a survey, less detail than in a good monograph..........2005-08-12

The author covers a wide variety of detectors, and devotes some considerable amount of space to less standard detectors (e.g. blocked impurity band) which are hard to find in textbooks. The level is above a Physics Today or IEEE Spectrum exposition, but less than in a good monograph of the Semiconductors and Semimetals series type. Would be good for courses based primarily on describing detectors for astronomy or scientific instrumentation. However, does not give much coverage to HgCdTe, a workhorse in the 3-5 and 8-12 micron ranges, and does not cover some fairly standard descriptions (e.g. RoA product) of noise for such detectors. Also not very useful for photodiodes for telecom, and the descriptions of avalanche photodiodes and things like 1/f noise are skimpy at best. The author gets points for at least trying to cover readout issues and for often giving simple quantitative models describing the physics behind many types of detectors in a short readable format.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly Beautiful, Moving Portraits Capture Texans.......2003-06-25

This is a beautifully photographed coffee table book picturing Texans from small towns and large cities all over the state. Photographed by Michael O'Brien, a photographer with a background in photojournalism, the book spotlights Texans as diverse as Willie Nelson, Lady Bird Johnson, ZZ Top, small town chearleaders, ranch families, and Laura and George Bush. Michael's wife, Elizabeth O'Brien, a writer, captures each person in a sensitive, personal interview which describes each Texan in that moment in time. The Face of Texas would be a wonderful gift for anyone who lives in the state of Texas or has friends or relatives there, or for anyone who appreciates beautiful photography or Americana.

                4 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!.......2003-06-21

The Face of Texas stands out within the array of Texas books that have been published in recent years. The photographs by Michael O'Brien--portraits of Texans, both famous and ordinary--are stunning; and the subjects themselves, from celebrities like Earl Campbell and Lady Bird Johnson to regular folks like painter Ran Horn of Van Horn, TX, the self-described "Van Gogh of Van Horn," and Ila Johnston, the beloved, retired Spur, TX high school teacher who just renewed her Texas driver's license at the age of 97, are fascinating individuals. The pictures in The Face of Texas are accompanied by well-written, plainspoken stories by Elizabeth O'Brien about each subject. The text and photographs combine to create a substantial picture of each person that transcends the visual; both writer and photographer treat their subjects with warmth and respect. The book is not meant to be a definitive portrait of Texas; as photographer Michael O'Brien says in his introduction, it is simply a collection of his favorite portraits taken over the years on assignment, primarily for various magazines. Bravo for O'Brien--what a phenomenal photographic journey!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful portraits of Texans.......2003-06-17

This is a beautiful and expressive collection of portraits of a wide variety of Texans, from the famous to unknown, real Texans. O'Brien has a great sense of light and clearly connects with his subjects, who are often pictured in their environment, so that you get a real feeling for the place as well as the people. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in photography or Texas.

                5 out of 5 stars magnificent & beautiful.......2003-06-15

We all love to watch people, we all love to learn about the stories people have, now we have the opportunity to see a wonderful slice of texas culture. This book captures the heart and beauty of each of its' subjects. From the largent family to willie to destiny's child to junior brown to ran horn to all the members of the fandangle to kinky...etc. Sinead, my 7 yr. old girl, has her favorites as well. All animal related: The gatorfest queen, ran horn, the prairie dog from the Fandangle, and last but not least kinky standing on the water. She said, "That one is weird...no one can stand on water, how does he stand on the water? I had to explain the magic of photography...i think she understood. You will also enjoy this book for the stories that Elizabeth writes. They are fascinating and very necessary to explain why and how and where are they now questions. You will not be dissapointed with this collection of stories and photo's!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book...a must for all Texas coffee tables.......2003-06-14

I will start my review my rejecting all of what the past reviewer Daniel Andrade said about the book. What he said completely reflects the tone of a somewhat jealous person and a selectabley one-sided arguement. The Face of Texas, which I had anticipated since its announcement, did not only capitulate some of Michael O'Brien's famous and somewhat artistic photographs but it also gave me something that other coffee table books did not: it a description of the photgraph...let me explain. Other coffee table books or general photograph books for example often lead me to be confused...I want to know the people in the picture...and yet, no one ever explains the picture. Elizabeth O'Brien did this beautifully, and I found myself more interested in the "nobodys" such as Sloan Peterson and her Austin High prom date rather than Willie Nelson and Troy Aikman.

And to make another point on Daniel's bittersome review, let me pose him a question. What do you think of when you think of someone's face? You think of the distinct features that you remember most easily. Let ask you another...what are the distinct features of Texas? People don't think of such things as its racial diversity...they think of cowboys, famous legends such as Earl Campbell and Troy Aikman and Willie Nelson, they think of small town Texas, the hill coountry, the Mexican influences. To refute yet another weak point of his review proves that he must not have looked at the book for very long and may have had some sort of squirmish with the publication of this book. Hardly anything is accurately protrayed these days but how doers that have any wager of me or anyone else buying the book or enjoying it? Not only would I highly recomend that someone buy this book for yourself, but maybe give it to a friend...it seems to make a wonderful present.

I just really like Buckley and have ever since I saw him on one of those 60-minute type programs back in the early '90s. This book provides some interesting information about him from interviews with friends and family, etc. In general, it is quite poorly written and a little boring, relying entirely on the subject's inherently interesting life rather than on the author's skill. Buckley fans will enjoy. Biography fans will yawn.

5 out of 5 stars Buckley at 80.......2005-11-25

Great book; very objective, almost a love feast of fascinating Buckley quotes, but also very critical. I recommend Mr. Judis' biography of William F. Buckley, Jr. as a great way to understand the course of American conservatism in the last century, going strong into this one.
