In recent years, the accounting profession has been faced with a number of unresolved problems. One of the most crucial has been the failure to distinguish between two separate sectors of the economy, the core and the periphery. This work offers a comprehensive study of this "dual economy" in which large organizations are clustered at the center while smaller organizations are arrayed on the periphery. At least two sets of accounting standards are required to adequately serve this structure, Monti-Belkaoui and Belkaoui argue, and just what these standards are, and how they would affect such issues as financial reporting, is the subject of this book. The work explores the nature of the dual economy and provides a perspective on the way in which the concept operates. The authors begin their study with a survey of the theories and implications of the dual economy, and the issues of accounting validation in such a structure. In a number of succeeding chapters, they then analyze some fundamental accounting problems and their relation to economic dualism, including income smoothing, auditor switching, and bond rating changes. The work concludes with an examination of public policy and standard-setting solutions to the dual economy situation. Accounting in the Dual Economy will be a useful resource for a wide variety of professionals, including practicing accountants, financial managers, and legislators. It will also be an important supplementary text for courses in accounting and public policy.

Case Study Light.......2005-10-15

I bought this book because it claimed to have a lot of case studies on performance management's impact on organizations with programs in place. I did not find that to be the case. I would not recommend this book if you're looking for real life examples of how an effective PM program translates to improved business results.

This book can be used by a variety of professionals:
*Managers - they can understand the connection between strategy, business planning process, objectives, performane measurement; also the managers will learn to work better with performance improvment and project management experts, get used to spend enough time with planning, checking assumptions and objective definitions. In this way thye might see the "wasted time with planning and paper work" like and investment that will prove shortly it is a worth while one.
*Performance management or projects managers - the experienced ones have a comprehensive review of the proccesses and activities involved in performance management. From this point of view the book is a good refference to come back from time to time in order to understand the "big picture". I'm doing this with great pleasure. Less experienced project managers might want to use this as a strating point in order to improve knowledge, to find out theirs future study needs and learn how to better plan and manage the next projects.
*Accountants - to better understand the connection between financial measures and non financial ones.
*Human Resources experts - to learn how to connect the individual performance with business results achievement, business plan, and business strategy. They also will find new ideas about how to improve the communication with management and "reinvent" HR role in business management.

The authors are doing a great job in explaining the connection between strategic planning and performance measures, presenting the steps to design and implement a strategy. They put a lot of attention in detailing the three architecture types we have to take care in preparing the project performance plan: organizational architecture, technological architecture and process architecture. After a clear presentation of balanced scorecards, it is shown how all the above information can be used for business planning, process performance measurement, and job performance measurement. Strongly recommended to the ones interested in increasing organizational capacity, in improving management and project management skills, in restructuring organization architecture and its activity.

This is an excellent guide to watching the night sky during the year. It is personable and highly enjoyable -- anyone interested in backyard astronomy will find it easy to read and use. Highly recommended.

Become a better astronomer in only 52 weeks.......2000-08-17

The Sky watcher's Year is broken into 52 essays on what to observe through the year. Each week covers a different observation topic, such as finding true north, the summer triangle, or deep-sky treasures. The author provides facts, and lore on each of the topics, and ideas for observing the phenomena. There are also additional sections on observing the Sun, Eclipses, and the Moon. Many of the essays cover topics that are easily visible with the naked eye, binoculars or a small telescope. The book is organized by week so you can thumb to the week, read the essay, go outside, look up at the night sky and say aha, so that's what he means. I recommend this book for those who want to expand their knowledge of astronomy. This book would be a good companion to those who enjoyed 40 Nights to Knowing the Sky: a night-by-night sky watching primer by Schaaf.

Fascinating.......2001-02-19

Contrary to what you might think, the idea of extraterrestrial life, and even intelligence is not new. In this book, Professor Crowe tracks the debate over extraterrestrial life throughout history, concentrating on the era of 1750 to 1900. Hoping from writer to writer, Crowe deeply covers each persons writing, and its implications in the debate.

This book makes an excellent companion to "Plurality of Worlds" by Steven Dick, which mainly covers up to 1750. Among the fascinating stories I read in this book were those of the "Moon hoax" of R.A. Locke, and Martian canal controversy of the 1880s and `90s. I took away one star because the book is slow and wordy at times, and I wish the author had focused more upon what our ancestors thought extraterrestrials would look like. But, overall this is a great book, and I highly recommend it.

MAN'S HIGHEST HOPE AND FEAR AND LESSON.......2000-09-30

Michael J. Crowe's "The Extraterrestrial Life Debate, 1750-1900" is one of the most intellectually magnificent and philosophically enthralling books I have ever read, a supreme work of scholarship. It perfects the sensitive art of quotation and distillation, and the chronological arrangement of the encyclopedic material turns all of history into a common dialogue upon one of the very greatest ideas and problems there is to perplex and fascinate the mind and surround us with the mystery of natural possibilities that are both crazy and sublime. The book itself is like a universe of stellar minds contemplating the inverse puzzle of why there is life on Earth or any life at all. Despite its magnitude, I came to its last page with a melancholy regret that there was not more and more and more of it, but at least this was true of the jeweled depths it probed and illuminated, and which it etched in my memory.

Worth reading.... .......2007-08-08

I am somewhat a WWII history buff, so I am not objective, but I really liked this book. I remember seeing a movie about this when I was a kid with Steve McQueen jumping fences with his motorcycle... This is the real story, not the stylized Hollywood tale. The thought of being in a small diameter tunnel, hundreds of yards from the opening in the barracks and digging with rudimentary tools makes one shudder. The odds that these guys faced between detection and tunnel collapse, are amazing.

A Variety of New Information on the Great Escape.......2006-05-08

There are quite a few books out on the Great Escape. This one repeats most previously-written information, but also has some novel items. A fair amount of biographic detail is devoted to "Big X"-Roger Bushell. There is a picture of him on the British ski team in 1932. Several other pictures, apparently not found in any other book on the Great Escape, are also in Gill's book. This book is also relatively unique in that it has short blurbs of paragraphs, written by individual ex-POWs, interspersed within the main text. There are also brief commentaries by some of the relatives of the 50 murdered escapees.

Much detail is devoted to the processes wherein documents and papers were forged. It is amazing to read that the camp artists could actually paint letters to closely resemble typewritten ones, complete with typos and other typed idiosyncrasies. The need to construct a makeshift theodolite (surveying telescope), as opposed to using a real one, is identified as a major source of error in measurement of the distance that the tunnels had to go in order for their exits to be in the woods. This helps explain why Harry was some 20 feet short of the pine treeline.

The discovery of the escape in progress from tunnel Harry, at just before 5 AM on March 25, 1944, is presented as one that took place when a German guard patrolling the wire perimeter noticed one of the escapees moving through into the forest. According to other versions of this event, the guard was initially attracted to the column of steam coming out of the exit shaft of tunnel Harry, and only noticed the escapees when one of them yelled "Don't shoot!" in German. Mention is made of the fact that the stiff wind periodically helped dissipate the column of steam through the night.

Gill discusses the German people's reaction to Nazi rule, almost tacitly suggesting that the Germans had no choice in the matter. No mention is made of the fact that 89% of the German population voted for the Nazi Party in earlier free elections. Gill also devotes some attention to the hunt for the German war criminals responsible for the murder of 50 of the 73 recaptured escapees.

Heroism and tragedy........2005-04-15

We all know the story: US GIs and British Tommy POWs at Stalag Luft 3 staged, during World War II, probably the greatest escape operation of all time. This is the true story of what went on, and it is a great story.

The reader will appreciate the courage and perhaps even more, the ingenuity of the soldiers who managed to turn the POW camp's "operational purpose" to be to conduct escape attempts. The basic notion was that by focusing on escape, the captive Allied soldiers could contribute materially to the war effort by tying down a disproportionate amount of German military and police forces. This they did do.

The "Great Escape" largely ended in tragedy, but this in no way detracts from the heroism of the men who conducted it. This is a fascinating and engaging read to which the discerning reader will return many times.
