This Book Is The Best For Dealing With Facilitation Challenges.......2005-08-30

After working in an organization comprised of 240 high performance teams and facilitating thousands of team activities, I was looking for something that would help address those issues that went beyond the normal facilitation efforts. This book offers strategies for approaching teams that seem to be going nowhere. They are the best techniques I have ever seen. A Landmark Book.......2005-11-20

This is one of my favorite books. I am a writer and happened to stumble onto this amazing book while researching Velikovsky, the current failed comet model, earth changes and much more. Aveni produced this fine scholarly work on the central american archaeological sites. I was blown away when I realized from this source that the grid axes of nearly all of the ancient meso american sites are skewed to the east. Aveni didn't grok on the reason but his reliable data is invaluable. And the reason? The ruins are much much older than the so called experts claim -- and date to before the last crustal shift which probably occurred at the close of the last ice age -- around 9500 BC. Thereabouts. The ruins, in other words, were once oriented N-S just like the pyramids of Giza today -- but when the crust moved so did the temples.

Aveni's analysis of the Berlin Codex is also a treasure. Amazingly, the Codex includes an authentic Mayan ephemeris of Venus -- and it is telling. Aveni is puzzled by it -- and wonders how these Mayans (whose calendar was accurate to how many decimal points -- and yet they) couldn't manage to record the stations of Venus accurately. Aveni doesn't get it -- but his translation and analysis is nonetheless a tremendous contribution. Of course the Mayans did record the stations accurately. They recorded what they saw: namely, a planet (Venus) that was in an extremely elliptical orbit. (Venus today has an almost perfectly circular orbit.) Velikovsky was right. Venus was then a comet in the process of being captured by the sun. And this confirmatory evidence - which Velikovsky did not know about -- has been lying around since 1980 when this book was published -- and no one (except for me) has even noticed.

Aveni's scholarship is second to none. The book is a gem.

Remarkable........2004-07-20

This is a remarkable book, despite some flaws. In a fast paced, informal, conversational voice, von Hippel presents an incredible amount of information, most of it very interesting. The emphasis is on physiology, not anatomy, and it is grounded in evolutionary concepts. Thus, while things work remarkably well, designs are certainly not what you would get starting from scratch - although Hippel sometimes shows that there are so many conflicting constraints that many apparently simpler designs would not work. Hippel, a doctor, is interested in clinical problems and treatments, as well as evolution and how things work in other life forms. He is also the type of scientist who draws scientific lessons from the most mundane phenomenon of everyday life. I personally enjoyed his sense of humor and crusty manner, although you might not if you are a lawyer or politician. The problem with the book is that while Hippel explains things clearly enough, there is a limit to how well you can convey material without the graphical aids found in good textbooks, nor is Hippel that clear in his own mind about just what kind of background he expects his readers to have. I tended to enjoy most of the sections I was not fully following: I would read quickly and pick up interesting nuggets. Still, readers without any background in molecular biology are likely to miss a lot and may have difficulty with the first few chapters.

Human Evolutionary Biology.......2001-08-06

This book tackles what it's title states, "Human Evolutionary Biology." The author displays an impressive knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. He begins with physics and chemistry to help us understand the role these play in shaping us, from our pH to why we're so water-logged, then examines how multicellular organisms like ourselves arose from single-celled ancestors. Next, through covering such topics as blood (e.g. Iron defiency), the skelotomuscular system (e.g. types of muscle) and the immune system (MHC system, etc.) through their own chapters, Hippel gets into details and finds a successful way to organize the remainder of the book. There is plenty of space to lag and lull the reader to sleep. But this book does just the opposite, keeping one's attention throughout. The writing style is lively and irreverent; the metaphors wonderful and humor ripe. Hippel actively advances evolutionary explanations throughout, challenging the reader with such views rather than leaving such interpretations for sidebars or background noise. So if you are an ardent evolutionist yourself, you'll probably love this. If you're not, you might find some of the dismissals of religious views as too zealous and perhaps gleeful. In other small weaknesses, the book contains no figures, meaning that one will have to search elsewhere for diagrams of the skeletal system, the cranial nerves and the digestive system. A few clinical asides also seem out of place, given that the rest of the book seems designed for broader audiences. Overall, however, this book successfully addresses what it advertises: human anatomy and physiology from an evolutionary perspective.

The Power of an Evolutionary Perspective.......2001-07-10

From an unabashedly evolutionary perspective, Dr. von Hippel takes on human anatomy and physiology. Is he successful? Largely so. The writing is active, ripe with humor (try, "Thereafter you can be junked more cheaply than rebuilt" [p. 97]) and playfully blunt ("So rather than Earth being clothed in peacefully coexisting photosynthetic populations slowly depleting all available resources in idyllic surroundings while smothering in their own wastes, every growing group and its wastes provide new opportunities for the next opportunist." [p. 105]). It begins with the basics of the scientific method, moving to background on chemistry and physics necessary for understanding our evolution (e.g. our water-logged bodies). It shows how we became multicellular creatures from single-celled origins and how a range of our systems, from the immune system to emotions, developed as adaptations to past selection pressures. Throughout, the detail is impressive: the author clearly knows his subject in considerable detail. On the more critical side, the book could have benefitted by including anatomical or other illustrations. It's hard to get a good sense of the anatomy and physiology without such aids, though this book doesn't contain any such illustrations. Without prior knowledge, it therefore reads better alongside a basic, well-illustrated anatomy and physiology text and would alone be unsuitable for a course. A few of the medical asides also seemed superfluous to the audience that, on the whole, could be of varied backgrounds, extending beyond the medical community (I'm an example myself as a non-M.D.). Overall, this book contains a wealth of information and adaptive interpretations that inspire, entertain and can best be digested alongside more standard, better-illustrated texts.

EXCITING!.......1998-06-30

I was reading Edward O. Wilson's "Consilience" when I received this book. Both are very beautifully written books by very accomplished men. As an M.D., I found von Hippel's book very exciting that I will never look at the patients the same way again. We need scientific knowledge for everyone and we need it now. This book will engross anyone willing to learn the scientific truth beneath the common information.

The field equipment of the German Army in World War II was closely related to that used throughout World War I and earlier, yet it was of relatively light weight, ruggedly constructed, well designed, functional, and generally of a high quality, though this deteriorated in the later war years. A high degree of design standardisation was maintained in most categories of equipment, though materials and their colours often varied widely. There were also many different specialisations for the various arms of service as well as theatres of combat, such as the Afrikakorps in the Western Desert. This title investigates all manner of German combat equipments throughout World War II, from belt buckles to magazine pouches.

The simple guide to WWII German belt gear.......2005-09-15

I'm impressed that Gordon Rottman managed to cram a comprehensive guide into 48 pages. Most of these pages are either illustrated by Ron Volstad or have photographs--many of the photos are from that period.

I learned a lot from this little book. I used to think that the three-cell Mauser rifle pouches held 45 rounds in 9 chargers--Rottman wrote that the M1909 cartridge pouch did, but had been replaced by the M1911. The latter held just 2 clips (Mauser magazine chargers) of 5 rounds each for a total of 30 rounds. A rifleman usually was issued a pair of pouches and carried 60 rounds. The G43-armed rifleman replaced one set of pouches with a two-pocket magazine carrier--with three 10-shot magazines and a M1911 cartridge pouch, the G43 rifleman had the same amount of ammunition as his Kar98k-armed brother. This makes a difference to war gamers, re-enactors, and museums.

What was carried in the bread bag? Was the mess kit/cook pot carried empty or full of food? When did the WWI spade get replaced by the folding entrenching tool? What equipment did a machine gunner carry? A platoon leader?

I have several 1:6th-scale German WWII squads that I'm outfitting for dioramas. "German Combat Equipments 1939-45" will help me get the little things correct without having to lug around a small library. Unfortunately, the people who make those 12-inch soldiers are a little skimpy on documentation packages. Rottman's book makes up for that lack.

Very good introduction.......2004-07-26

While you won't be able to assemble a set of full gear using this as a reference, this is an unbelievably good primer on the basics of German field equipment. Covers all basic items of kit very well, and gives dates of introduction, common colour shades, and extent of issue (ie to whom the items were issued and for what purposes).

Illustrations and colour plates top notch - clear and well laid out, rich with detail. Photos very good also, many unpublished ones, and of a uniformly high quality. Equipment and artifact photos a little poorly done, obviously taken outside in bright sunlight, making for harsh shadows and poor detail.

Overall, possibly the best basic guide out there, certainly for the money. Next step up would be Lee's SOLDAT series, which is more of an investment and lacks the clarity of Volstad's colour plates, but goes into more detail from a collector's point of view regarding variants and how to tell fakes from real items.

Splendid Volume.......2004-03-10

This is an excellent beginner volume that covers all the basics, and in great detail. Perfect for modellers, re-enactors, or those weirdo adults who play with 12 inch dolls. Clear diagrams and pictures, and informed text captions. There is greater detail in the SOLDAT series by Cyrus Lee, and of course this doesn't compare to the now out of print work by Jack Angolia. But most people won't need all that. All the bases are covered with this one - very useful, and at a great price.

Great reference.......2000-04-17

I am a collector of GI Joe's and other 12" Military figures and I have to say that this book is a great reference. The color drawings give the position of where most German soldiers put their gear on their harness'. I recommend it to all.

Totally Inadequate.......1999-07-20

When there are multi volume sets on this same subject, covering only one or two years at a time, how can this be useful? The French magazine Militaria runs multiple page articles on individual items of equipment. And I am sure there are others. But I am sure the illustrations are well done. Volstad does excellent work.
