President Bush's number-one management initiative for the federal government is the Strategic Management of Human Capital. According to Knowledgeworkers.com, human capital is the accumulated value of an individual's intellect, knowledge, and experience. In the U.S. federal government, a human capital crisis exists. The factors contributing to a human capital dilemma include a knowledge bleed due to retirement eligibility, changing perspectives on work, and escalating knowledge loss. According to a Joint Hearing on the Federal Human Capital, by 2005, more than half of the 1.8 million non-postal civilian employees will be eligible for early or regular retirement. An even greater percentage of the Senior Executive Service, the government's core managers, will be eligible to leave.

All government agencies are required to develop a human capital strategy by 2005. Many of these agencies have scored a "red" (lowest rating) on the Government Scorecard in the way they are approaching their strategic management of human capital. This book is an executive briefing on developing a successful human capital strategy based on lessons learned from analyzing existing strategies at government agencies such as NASA.
Using a knowledge management perspective, Liebowitz identifies four pillars of an effective strategy and gives examples of these in practice.

I'm an organic chemistry graduate student with some inorganic background, but I know very little about organometallics. This book seems to be a very good introduction for someone like me. Well written, understandable, relevant.

Of the organometallic texts I've seen, this is my favorite. It provides a good introduction and eases the reader into heavier material. It's a great reference and a good starting point for learning the subject.

This work provides a unified theory that addresses the important problem of the origin and maintenance of genetic variation in natural populations. With modern molecular techniques, variation is found in all species, sometimes at astonishingly high levels. Yet, despite these observations, the forces that maintain variation within and between species have been difficult subjects of study. Because they act very weakly and operate over vast time scales, scientists must rely on indirect inferences and speculative mathematical models. However, despite these obstacles, many advances have been made. The author's research in molecular genetics, evolution, and bio-mathematics has enabled him to draw on this work, and present a coherent and valuable view of the field. The book is divided into three parts. The first consists of three chapters on protein evolution, DNA evolution, and molecular mechanisms. This section reviews the experimental observations on genetic variation. The second part gives a unified treatment of the mathematical theory of selection in a fluctuating environment. The final two chapters combine the earlier assessments in a treatment of the scientific status of two competing theories for the maintenance of genetic variation. The 1932 Revolutionist is a historical play overlaps into the present. There seems to be a yawning gap between 1932 and 1995. Yet, is we consider the development of democracy sixty years are a rather brief period. We must stop bickering among ourselves on what the definition is and instead ask where can we find it. This is fundamental if we want to reach our destination.

Slim, but deep.......2007-06-22

I helped teach history classes that used this book and I have to admit: it wasn't universally popular among undergrads. But you'll find that you can return to Lemon Swamp time after time and still find it as rich as ever - it's almost impossible to exhaust the insights Fields presents, simply by letting a woman tell her stories. You'll learn more every time you open the book.

The Lemon Swamp made me recollect warm thoughts of my own grandparents,esp.my Grandmother. Some of Mamie G. Fields's remembrances are very enjoyable to read and often have cultural or a historical significance. Her comparisons of Boston and Charleston during the 1976 Bicentennial were quite interesting. Despite I am not a black woman I could identify with her in terms of the older generation of my family. I've now lived in Charleston area for approx. 15 years and I feel more at home here than I did growing up in New England.A MUST READ BOOK!

There are not enough stars on this site to rate this book. I read it continuously until I was done and then wanted more. Although it is easy reading and gentle on the spirit, this book is an anthology of events important to the history of African Americans and Black home life of a more genteel time. I wish it was required reading for everyone. It certainly would do much to clarify the problems African Americans have had in this society. It is also very humorous and not all facts and dates. Actually, the author, who appears to be a warm and nurturing person, supplies dates and figures so subtly that they do not interfere with the reading. I am buying another copy as a gift. If I were still teaching, I would certainly have this book on my reading list and every student would have to read it until they got it...

Dignified, amusing memory of a southern black childhood........1998-09-06

Ms. Fields has a wonderful story-telling ability, that brings you into her world so that you too, can look out at her world. You don't have to be a woman, young or black to be on her side, and see the pride and dignity with which she and her "people" thrived in that stifling time and place.

Even for a guy like me, I liked this book. It reads like Mamie is talking to you. There's a lot of history here and landscape of the Carolina low country. For someone like myself coming from a white monoculture (Oregon) the lives of these black folks is very instructive and inspiring

This wonderful book, published in 2003, will answer all your questions about the Salvation Army. I always wondered how it all began and when, and how it has evolved. I hope Mr. Yaxley will consider a sequel and write about the Army as it exists today. This book ends just as Evangeline Booth begins her leadership in America in the last century

I recommend this biography by Trevor Yaxley because of all the information, the look inside England in the mid eighteen hundreds, the easy to read can't put this book down style, and the almost unbelievable accomplishments of these two beloved people, William and Catherine Booth. There is a timeline and family tree in back of the book as well as good pictures.

The epilogue, entitled The Challenge, consists of the last public address by Catherine Booth, to two thousand delegates of her "army" in London on June 21, 1888. It is remarkable, challenging, and inspired.

Quoting from the first chapter is a paragraph by Paul Smith - here it is: "On April 9, 1865, Robert E. Lee met Ulysses S. Grant in the parlor of a private home at Appomattox Court House. He surrendered his army, bringing to an end four long years of death and devastation called the American Civil War. In the same year, a thirty six year old Englishman by the name of William Booth declared war on the powers of darness by founding The Salvation Army."

The multitudes of people living in poverty and without dignity inspired the Booths to declare this spiritual War and with great love and compassion, they gave hope to the helpless by offering faith in God (salvation thru Christ) food (soup kitchens) clothing, and employment, and a purpose (serving in the Army to help others as they were helped and lifted up).

The story of the Booths is all about a couple in love and a passion for helping desperate destitute people and giving spiritual and physical help - so innovative was their work, that what began in England gradually spread throughout the world and they also raised many children who continued in the work of helping the poor. Today, the Salvation Army is first to appear when disasters occur anywhere in the world - want to join!

I loved the book and you will too. I never even imagined what this "Army" was all about until I came across this biography.

Outstanding.......2003-09-25

Sensitive, engaging, historical account of the lives of the two founders of the Salvation Army. Peronal letters between these two sweethearts, then husband and wife as well as life-long evangelists, detail the outstanding faith and human struggle it took to start an army in the slums and in opposition to the "old church hierarchy" which did not want to deal with the "riff-raff." The dedication of the first salvationists often meant placing themselves in harms way as angry mobs jeered and soldiers lost their lives. Still, the Army grew stronger and stronger. Every paragraph in this book is engaging...and I generally find historical accounts very boring. If you are looking for an exciting and sensitive historical account and wish to be enaged spiritually as well, this is a must read.

Wow. This is a great book........2003-04-02

I was pleased at the way this book chronicles the lives of William and Catherine Booth. What a pair! I mean this man had a very hard life and basically was an indentured servant during his apprenticeship. They both new the meaning of self sacrifice and being our brother's keeper. What an awesome couple. Definitely read this one. It will give you a new perspective on your own life.

Heroes of the Faith Series.......2001-03-08

This book is a must have for anyone in the Salvation Army. You will enjoy the great story of the beginnig of the Salvation Army as you learn about the lives of the William and Catherine Booth. This book touched my heart and I'm sure it will touch yours. I give this book 5/5 stars.
