5 out of 5 stars Unemployed? Not a Kid? You Want This Book!.......2007-08-06

If you're 40-plus and looking for work, you are likely to feel like a stranger in a truly strange land.

This book is terrific. It guides you gently to stop looking where the jobs AREN'T (ie, sick or dead industries). It doesn't try to sweet-talk you out of the certainty that age discrimination exists, but is frank and realistic about what you can (and can't) do to counter it. It's practical enough to get you moving, yet kind enough that readers who have likely already been though a lot can actually stand to read it.

Really work this book, and you'll have a better resume, a clearer idea of your own goals, and much more focused criteria for job searches. Worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Lemons to lemonade .......2007-03-24

This is a very practical guide to getting your career moving when you suffer a setback when you are 40+ years old. Gail Geary doesn't hide the fact that age can be a negative factor when looking for a new job, but she doesn't let the reader use age as an excuse. Instead, she offers a very pragmatic approach to identifying your direction (including offering four career areas that are growing and are already "age diverse"), assembling an age-neutral resume, handling the interview, and staying in the right mindset along the way. I actually read this book cover-to-cover and can say with confidence that it has altered my approach for the better.

5 out of 5 stars If you must face the glass wall..........2007-01-09

Age bias is the single largest bias in the United States. That is the finding 0f a study at Harvard University and if you are bent on breaking through that bias, reading Gail Geary's book is a good preparation for that experience. Geary gives first rate advice on playing to your strengths, uncovering the hot sources for hiring possibilities, how to make good first impressions and handling tough questions.
If you are looking for employment in a market biased against you and you have some tell tale gray in your hair. this book can only help.

5 out of 5 stars My highest recommendation!.......2006-07-11

I wish I had this book 2 years ago when I was laid off! This is the BEST book I have read for any experienced former employee. It addresses the real issues you face as an older worker looking for a job and gives you strategies for overcoming them. I found the exercises included to be simple, neccessary and valuable. She addresses specific negative stereotypes of older employees and how to overcome them on resumes and during interviews. I found her section on "acquiring inexpensive skill and credential updates" to be invaluable. I also liked her chapter on "playing to your strengths". I bought and mailed a copy of this book to my sister who hates job hunting books - and even she loved it. If you are over 40, GET THIS BOOK NOW! This includes those of you who are still employed...

      Book Description

This book deals with a central problem throughout the legal profession - `What is the nature of discovery in legal decision-making?' It begins by identifying fundamental problems about the nature of discovery, expression and introspection that emerge in the work of legal theorists and psychologists who have a reflective interest in the discovery process. Related problems are raised in analyses of the spontaneous efforts of an arbitrator and a judge to solve legal problems. The work of the Canadian philosopher and theologian, Bernard Lonergan, on `insight' in non-legal fields is brought to bear on the problem. A plausible interpretation of various facets of discovery is provided. In fact, the author offers a new context in which to examine discovery, expression, and justification. This is the first book to focus primarily on the discovery process in legal reasoning.
Audience: Essential reading for anyone - legal theorists, philosophers, psychologists, judges, lawyers and students - interested in legal reasoning.

        Book Description

Since the beginning of humankind, people around the world have had a strong interest in the powers and beings perceived in the sky. This compelling short work helps students fully understand and appreciate the ways in which non-Western indigenous and small-scale societies perceive, conceptualize, and make sure of what they astronomically observe. With its concise explanations of prominent astronomical phenomena, discussions of relevant crosscultural examples, and instructive suggestions for active field research, Patterns in the Sky is a unique and practical guide for doing ethnoastronomy. In addition, Fabian offers exercises in observational astronomy with the naked eye so that students can get in touch with the cosmos and natural world around them.

        5 out of 5 stars A very interesting reading.......2005-10-17

I was very happy to find and read this book. It offers a nice trip, showing the different meaning of the heavens for different peoples. We are going to forget about the nightsky and this book, while introducing "different skies", helps discovering that those wonders do not have only a scientific importance, but also a cultural one.

It is a joy to find out what other people, far away from our own city, think about the same celestial objects, like the sun, the moon, the planets and so on.

I would recommend this nice book to those looking for a journey to the sky through different cultures. A nice reading.

5 out of 5 stars Patterns In The Sky.......2001-04-07

In Patterns in the Sky, Stephen Fabian presents us with a unique and practical guide to the sky as we see it--with the naked eye. But besides this, he also provides us with information about how living American Indian peoples in North, Central and South American interpret and interact with this observable phenomena, which gives us a deeper understanding of human diversity and intellect. This is an outstanding text, anyone interested in naked eye observation of the cosmos and American Indian interpretations of celestial phenomena should read this book.

This thoroughly updated edition continues to provide a concise overall coverage of colloid and surface chemistry, intermediate between the brief accounts in physical chemistry textbooks and the comprehensive coverage in specialized treatises.

New information is included on the composition and structure of solid surfaces, dynamic light scattering, micro emulsions and colloid stability control. The book provides a sound, but easy to follow theoretical framework. It outlines relevant research techniques and considers technological applications. A basic knowledge of the principles of physical chemistry is assumed. It will appeal to a wide readership, both undergraduate and postgraduate students at universities and colleges of technology as well as scientists in industry who need a broad background in the subject.

          Book Description

Forest certification has been widely accepted as a tool that would encourage industrial and non-industrial management of resources in an environmentally acceptable, socially beneficial and economically viable manner. Much has been written on certification yet five issues have been missing, which this book addresses: an analysis of the scientific basis for the certification standards; a formal and mechanistic incorporation of social and natural system sustainability as part of the standards; the rationale for the different sets of standards that are currently being used to certify governmental, industrial and non-industrial organizations; the success of the different sets of standards in assessing the environmental acceptability, social benefits and economic viability of the managed system; and, the difficulty of certifying small landowners with current protocols. Forest Certification examines the historical roots of forest certification, the factors that guide the development of certification protocols, the players involved in certification, the factors determining the customers to be certified, and the benefits of certification. The book also covers the terminology and other issues intrinsic to certification that direct the structure of standards, the similarities between indicators of different human disturbances within the ecosystem/landscape and certification standards, and, finally, a case study evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of existing certification protocols. Forest Certification is unique in its analysis of the scientific basis for the structure of the forest certification protocols. It documents the roles of human values in the development of assessment protocols but demonstrates how elements of existing protocols should be used to produce non-value based standards.

          Book Description

The first edition of High Power Microwaves was considered the defining book for this field. Completely revised and rewritten, not merely updated, the second edition continues this tradition. Written from a systems perspective, the book provides a unified, coherent presentation of the fundamentals in this rapidly changing field. The presentation is broad and introductory, with the flavor of a survey, yet not elementary. The authors cover all the major types of microwave sources, their distinguishing features, and primary research issues, and the fundamental limits on performance. See what's new in the second edition: · Coverage of HPM systems with a detailed example called SuperSystem · A survey of a class of high power radiators, with very different technologies and applications, that has fully emerged since the first edition · New HPM formulary contains a handy compilation of frequently used rules of thumb and formulas The book outlines historical trends that have led to the development of HPM and compares the capabilities of HPM to those of conventional microwaves. It divides the field into two sectors: applications driven and technology driven, and address both perspectives. Starting from the applications of HPM, the book reviews microwave fundamentals, enabling technologies, and the equipment and facilities surrounding the sources in which microwaves are generated. The authors conclude with coverage of ultrawideband technologies and the major source groups.

Five years after its first publication, with more than 150,000 copies in print, Final Gifts has become a classic. In this moving and compassionate book, hospice nurses Maggie Callanan and Patricia Kelley share their intimate experiences with patients at the end of life, drawn from more than twenty years experience tending the terminally ill.

Through their stories we come to appreciate the near-miraculous ways in which the dying communicate their needs, reveal their feelings, and even choreograph their own final moments; we also discover the gifts—of wisdom, faith, and love—that the dying leave for the living to share.

Filled with practical advice on responding to the requests of the dying and helping them prepare emotionally and spiritually for death, Final Gifts shows how we can help the dying person live fully to the very end

5 out of 5 stars A must have for everyone.......2007-09-30

This book had everything I needed to understand what my dad was going through as he slowly prepared to die. It made it all so understandable and much easier to accept. Not only is everything explained, it gives concrete examples from the author's experiences as Hospice nurses. Such an informative and comforting book to have...I have read it numerous times and find new things each time as the dying process progressed. I would recommend it to everyone.

          2 out of 5 stars A Tad Sugar -Coated?.......2007-09-28

I hate to be a wet blanket because so many people have drawn so much strength from this book. I found it to be extremely helpful in learning to listen to the symbolic language of dying people--a perspective that, in itself, is worth the read. It troubles me, however, that almost all of the deaths were reported as peaceful, even joyous, that almost all family members were healthy and fulfilled. Most of the dying people were young, smart, and/or extremely articulate.

I would have appreciated an account that included the not-so-pretty experiences of death--the ambiguous, ambivalent, hard, messy parts.
Including those pieces would have made the book more helpful.

The interventions of the authors were somehow just too neat and tidy.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for every human being!.......2007-09-26

My daughter and I think that EVERYONE should read this book. Sooner or later, most of us will need it. I read this book after bringing my Mother
home from hospital and placing her under Hospice care. I was with her 24/7 for that last month she lived. I cannot even begin to tell you what a help this book was to me and all members of my family. This book changed our lives. We look at life and death so differently than we did previously. I felt honored to be there through all the changes and the death of my Mother.

          5 out of 5 stars A book to share.......2007-09-18

I read this book while my grandmother was dying; I wish I had read it sooner. I have purchased multiple copies of this book and try to have a copy on hand at all times to share with the next person experiencing this process. The insights that the authors share are helpful in understanding this process without attempting to put it into a religious context, but in the dying person's language. They explain the value of listening to that person and what they are saying and respecting their choices.

Everyone needs to read this book, not just those who are experiencing this now, with someone, but everyone. We all will face this death sooner or later and the preparation this book gives invaluable insight into that final gift.

          5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!!!.......2007-08-30

This book will help families and health care professionals understand the precious time surrounding death. So well written, it will make you laugh and cry and feel more comfort around a topic our society tends to avoid. I work in oncology and highly highly recomend this book to nurses, physicians, families, ANYONE. We all deal with death and this book really helps you to understand a new perspective!

            Book Description

"Foner often let others take credit, but with his names and telephone numbers he was the man to call-and take a call from. He was a champion of civil rights and civil liberties and an early and strong opponent of the Vietnam War when that was rare among labor."-The Nation

"For the daily truth behind phrases like 'first-generation American,' 'labor movement,' and 'civil rights,' there is no better life story than that of Moe Foner. Like Emma Goldman, he insisted on dancing at the revolution, and on every American's right to joy and justice. In these dark times, his memoir is a beacon of past and future light."-Gloria Steinem

"I operated under the theory that a good union doesn't have to be dull."-Moe Foner

"Don't waste any time mourning-organize."-Joe Hill

Moe Foner, who died in January 2002, was a leading player in 1199/SEIU, New York's Health and Human Service Union, and a key strategist in the union's fight for recognition and higher wages for thousands of low-paid hospital workers. Foner also was the founder of Bread and Roses, 1199's cultural program created to add dimension and artistic outlets to workers' lives.

Foner produced a musical about hospital workers; invited Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger to perform for workers and their children; presented stars such as Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, and Alan Alda; and installed the only permanent art gallery at a union headquarters. One of Foner's last projects was a poster series called "Women of Hope," which celebrates African American, Native American, Asian American, and Latina women including Maya Angelou, Maxine Hong Kingston, Septima P. Clark, and the Delaney sisters Sarah and Elizabeth. Today his legacy is the largest and most important cultural program of any union.

Not for Bread Alone traces Foner's development from an apolitical youth whose main concerns were basketball and music to a visionary whose pragmatism paved the way for legislation guaranteeing hospital workers the right to unionize. Foner writes eloquently about his early life in Brooklyn as the son of a seltzer delivery man and about many of the critical developments in the organization of hospital workers. He provides an insider's perspective on major strikes and the struggle for statewide collective bargaining; the leadership styles of Leon Davis, Doris Turner, and Dennis Rivera; and the union's connection to key events such as the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War.

                Book Description

North Carolina possesses one of the longest, most treacherous coastlines in the United States, and the waters off its shores have been the scene of some of the most dramatic episodes of piracy and sea warfare in the nation's history. Now, Lindley Butler brings this fascinating aspect of the state's maritime heritage vividly to life. He offers engaging biographical portraits of some of the most famous pirates, privateers, and naval raiders to ply the Carolina waters.

Covering 150 years, from the golden age of piracy in the 1700s to the extraordinary transformation of naval warfare ushered in by the Civil War, Butler sketches the lives of eight intriguing characters: the pirate Blackbeard and his contemporary Stede Bonnet; privateer Otway Burns and naval raider Johnston Blakeley; and Confederate raiders James Cooke, John Maffitt, John Taylor Wood, and James Waddell. Penetrating the myths that have surrounded these legendary figures, he uncovers the compelling true stories of their lives and adventures.

5 out of 5 stars Villainy, Luck and Courage on the Outer Banks.......2004-05-15

While visiting beautiful Ocracoke Island on North Carolina's Outer Banks recently I picked up this book in a local book store. I wanted to get some flavor of the island's history and had skimmed through a dozen or so titles before I settled on this one. I was not disappointed. Lindley S. Butler has captured the marine lore of the Outer Banks in a well written and researched book. "Pirates, Privateers, and Rebel Raiders of the Carolina Coast" chronicles, without sensationalism, the often bloody careers of eight of the most important personalities of the days of pirates, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. All, from the pirate Blackbeard to the Confederate raider James I. Waddell, are shone in realistic fashion. I was much impressed by both the wealth of sources listed and with the easy reading style of this work. It made a great read during my flight from Raleigh-Durham to El Paso. This is, in my opinion as a non-historian, the way histories should be written to make them more accessible to the layman. I have to also give my compliments to the University of North Carolina Press for publishing this excellent account, which stands out among any number of books on pirates and privateers.

If you visit the coast of either North or South Carolina and wish to know more about the rich local history, you cannot go wrong in reading Butler's volume on the subject!

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing tales of captivating seafarers.......2004-04-17

With Pirates, Privateers, and Rebel Raiders, Dr. Lindley Butler has written an exceptionally readable narrative that attempts to transcend the myths of sea outlaws and tell the stories of 8 important seafarers who operated off the rugged North Carolina coast. The book spans over 150 years from 18th century pirates, to privateers during the War of 1812, and rebel raiders of the Civil War. The stories of the notorious Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet open the book with engrossing tales about these pirates' lives and activities during their relatively short stints as outlaws. Historical consultant to the archaeological team exploring the 18th century wreck off the coast of North Carolina believed to be Blackbeard's flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, Butler has researched some of the most up-to-date material on the world famous pirate, though much of Blackbeard's early life remains a mystery. Equally engaging are the stories of the lesser-known privateer, Otway Burns, and naval commerce raider Johnston Blakeley who operated out of North Carolina during the War of 1812. The poignancy of Blakeley's final days is skillfully told through Butler's narrative. The book concludes with the exploits of Confederate naval officers James Cooke of the ironclad Albemarle, blockade runner John Maffitt, naval commando John Taylor Wood, and James Waddell, the commerce raider who sailed around the world in the Shennandoah. The stories of these naval heroes of the rebellion reveal the intensity of the national struggle that shook the country apart and draw the reader into a deeper understanding of the personal struggles that affected so many in the nation. Although the lives of these eight men are not romanticized in Butler's book, romance is not left out of his narrative as family life and personal relationships are woven into each biographical sketch. Nonetheless, the action packed stories of these maritime warriors and thieves are thoroughly captivating, making the book difficult to put down. What Butler has reminded us is that history in its truest form is first and foremost about story-telling. He has succeeded in telling the stories of these men's lives in a way that is both historically informative and skillfully narrated.

                      Book Description

John Hay - journalist, historian, poet, and diplomat - had the unique fortune of serving President Lincoln as his personal secretary and Presidents McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt as Secretary of State. Being in many respects an ideal letter writer, Hay recorded his impressions so freshly and so vividly that he never leaves us in doubt as to what he thought of persons, political affairs, or life's experiences. Included are the letters that he wrote to Garfield, Nicolay, Theodore Roosevelt and many others.

Hay served at diplomatic posts in Paris (1865-76), Vienna (1867-68), and Madrid (1869-70). His widely-known ballads were collected in Pike County Ballads (1871), and from 1870-75 he was staff editorial writer at the New York Tribune. In 1897 he was appointed by President Cleveland as ambassador to Great Britain. As secretary of state (1898--1905), Hay authored the Open Door policy, instituted regular press conferences, and paved the way for the building of the Panama Canal, making his office and American foreign policy of worldwide influence.

"When does desire turn into exploitation?" Bett Williams asks, reflecting on a relationship she had with a seventeen-year-old girl when she was thirty. This is the question that hums beneath The Wrestling Party, whether Bett is exploring the youth-worshiping tendencies of a riot grrrl music -festival or telling the tale of a disabled boy's passion for Tara Lapinsky or giving advice to "stalker chicks." Bett's life becomes unhinged in an attempt to finally get it right when she has a crush on Anikka, a nightclub regular with a Swiss/German accent who is sexually submissive (as in TheVillage Voice personals-submissive). Bett's crush lands her half naked and covered in oil while wrestling a dozen women in her garage. Still unable to win over Anikka, she enlists the help of David, an obnoxious Scottish writer who assists in bringing the relationship with Anikka to its hilarious and startling finale.

The Wrestling Party is a raucous mixture of cultural criticism, erotic tell-all, and in-the-field journalism that reads like a novel you can't put down. In an era marked by social isolation and paint-by-numbers politics, Bett's stories offer us a glimpse of who we are beyond the constraints of cool correctness. Like wrestling, conflict in Bett's -nimble hands is transformed into beauty and violence, into something altogether more complicated and tender.

Bett Williams is the author of Girl Walking Backwards. Her writing has appeared in Out and extensively on LesbiaNation.com.

I was doing random subject searches at the library and came across this. Although early on it is full of passages that seem completely "lesbian only", it quickly turns into the reminiscences of a slacker 30something Angeleno doing rather funny and mundane things.

Williams has some startlingly spot on points, and the sexiness of the title will drown out some of the more intimate, quiet moments. Some good lines are:

It seems odd then, at age thirty-one, after years of hiding out in dark bars where guys named Jimmy tell stories of `Nam, and after deprogramming myself from using words like "energy," I chose to move back to my hometown of Santa Barbara, California.

The New Age, just another unseemly `80s subculture, had disappeared, along with diagonal zippers and Milli Vanilli.

I recently saw a documentary on dolphins. It turns out they're not the loving, spiritual creatures we thought they were. They are violent territorial animals driven by sex who will fight each other sometimes to the death and even kill their young. I was quite happy that these symbols of Californian New Age culture were not, after all, the cute baby golden retrievers of the marine world but in fact a bunch of seething hussies and wife-beaters.

I watched the show religiously until I began having a series of dreams about Angela Chase. In one of them, she was washing her hair...in the school cafeteria. She began pulling scrolls of words out of her ears that she read out loud and every word was Ultimate Truth, more powerful than music.

Thank you for carrying it, for carrying me. You never said to my face that you understood love mattered in just this way. But you showed up.

                                      5 out of 5 stars knock-down, drag-out fodder for your brain.......2003-12-25

The Wrestling Party will most likely be touted as a salacious lesbian extravaganza or pop culture commentary, but it's much more than that. Williams expertly pulls the reader in and drags us through her physical and mental worlds. Like all great writers, she remains vulnerable throughout. Whatever your gender, sexual orientation or body identity politics, this book is witty, tender and heartbreakingly romantic.
