Book Description
This laboratory manual is probably quite different from any chemistry lab manual you have seen before; it is an attempt to give general chemistry students an appreciation of what chemists do. Real scientists do not have a recipe for each experiment that they perform. Rather, they devise heir own experiments to test their hypotheses and gather and analyze data. In the real world there is no right answer, and so it will be in this laboratory experience. The open-ended projects in the manual will last several weeks and require students to work together in teams to sloven problems, using skills that are ever more necessary in everyday life.Customer Reviews:

The Chemistry of Evolution: The Development of our Ecosystem
R.J.P Williams , and J.J.R Fraústo da Silva Manufacturer: Elsevier Science ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0444521151 |
Book Description
Conventionally, evolution has always been described in terms of species. The Chemistry of Evolution takes a novel, not to say revolutionary, approach and examines the evolution of chemicals and the use and degradation of energy, coupled to the environment, as the drive behind it. The authors address the major changes of life from bacteria to man in a systematic and unavoidable sequence, reclassifying organisms as chemotypes. Written by the authors of the bestseller The Biological Chemistry of the Elements - The Inorganic Chemistry of Life (Oxford University Press, 1991), the clarity and precision of The Chemistry of Evolution plainly demonstrate that life is totally interactive with the environment. This exciting theory makes this work an essential addition to the academic and public library.Customer Reviews:

I Am Great.......2001-02-08
An exercise in justification, Doctor Gypsee Gunn's De-Motivational Seminar is a strong testament to the Homer Simpson-esque adage that "trying is the first step to failure." Banking on the assumption that the lazy slobs who litter the human gene pool are intelligent enough to understand words like "synthesis and antithesis", Doctor Gypsee Gunn breaks down the "crap of life" in scientific terms for everyone wondering why life has left them behind to sit at home alone and suck down Welfare Malt Liquor.
Set up like a mock seminar, Doctor Gypsee Gunn's tirade on the futility of optimism and the superiority of failure does have a "repulsive charm," but if you can keep up with the Doctor's impressive mile-a-minute vocabulary and scientifically-based line of thought, you have every reason to feel good about yourself. If your cup is never more than half empty, Doctor Gunn's De-Motivational Seminar can teach you the scientific (experimental as they are) reasons and purposes for this negativity. Either as a prophet for a doomed society or a product of it, Doctor Gunn does manage to make some poignant and funny statements about the way humans try to live. The problem with Gunn's seminar could be in finding an audience that will genuinely benefit from it. Those who are capable of understanding Gunn's rapid-fire shifts in logic or his 50 cent words may not need to be reminded that life is full of injustice, irony, inconsistency, and misplaced priorities. On the other hand, Doctor Gypsee Gunn operates on a level far over the heads of the mentally enfeebled and pre-demotivated who gum up the system for the rest of us.
Doctor Gypsy Gunn, or an alternate persona of the same man, will most likely be a force in comedy within the next few years. He's got the brains and he's got the bite, he just needs the balls to bite hard enough in the right places. He's like a cross between a really proper Dennis Leary and a stuffy chemistry prof with oratory skill to spare. Whoever he is, whatever he is, Doctor Gypsee Gunn is dangerously smart, sarcastic, ill-willed, and well enunciated. Be sure to check out the Doctor's "hit" single "I See You In The I.C.U." and keep his "Cycle Of Depravity" spinning.
NOTE: Doctor Gypsy Gunn is the creation of Mark Bornstein who was also the creator of Brick Mallery.

Book Description
Khe Sanh was a small village in northwest South Vietnam that sat astride key North Vietnamese infiltration routes. In September 1966 a Marine battalion deployed into the area. Action gradually increased as the NVA attempted to destroy Free World Forces bases, and the siege of Khe Sanh proper began in October 1967. The bitter fight lasted into July 1968 when, with the changing strategic and tactical situation, the base was finally closed. This book details the siege and explains how, although the NVA successfully overran a Special Forces camp nearby, it was unable to drive US forces from Khe Sanh.Customer Reviews:

The Lincoln Interpreters.......2004-02-19
One of the things I like about this volume is the commentary and criticism about almost every individual article, sometimes including counter reactions. The reader benefits from the debate and critical analysis of the each essay.
The book has five parts. The First, "The Common People's Lincoln", is about Abraham Lincoln as seen in public. A Collection of photos from 'The Face of Lincoln' prefaces a discussion of the Public perception of "Honest Abe". For instance, Lincoln's growing a beard following his victory in the 1860 election kept photographers interested in his appearance.
Also in this section, "Abe Lincoln Laughing" by P.M.Zall argues that Lincoln used his sense of humor and the funny stories to win over his audience and get his message across. The critique, by Mark E. Neely, is that the humor was part of Lincoln's character, not an instrument for appeasing crowds. "His humor was a political liability with large segments of the populace... [the] fallacy that underlies much of Zall's paper - ... the "instrumental" view of Lincoln's humor" (p.29).
The second part of the book is titled "Ideology and Politics" and discusses some main issues of Lincoln's policies and presidency. In "Lincoln and the Economics of the American Dream", Editor Gabor S. Boritt argues that the American Dream "the prosperity and liberties of the people" in Lincoln's words, were the goals Lincoln cared most about, and he defended the Union as the vehicle for it (p. 100).
The Critiques of this interesting essay are not very convincing. M. E. Bradford elaborates on how unfairly he has been treated by critics. His claims: Lincoln did prefer Freedom over slavery, constitutional rights over Tyranny and peace over war, "other things being equal" ,but he stuck by his ideals only so long as they "fed fuel into that little engine that knew no rest, his political ambition" (p.110). His argument consists of a few lawsuits Lincoln filed which were related to Slavery, his anti-Black sayings, and lots of Latin words supposed to impress the reader.
Phillip S. Paludan's critique is somewhat more substantial, but it amounts to, essentially, stating his dislike for the industrial revolution.
The second essay, Glen E. Thurow's "Abraham Lincoln and American Political Religion" deals with a contradiction between Lincoln's Gettysburg address and his second inaugural. In the Gettysburg address, Lincoln says the Civil War is a test: whether democracy can survive. It is a problem of Free Will - Americans must prove their ability to defend the Jeffersonian values of equality. The second inaugural deals with predestination - God's justice in making Americans pay for their sin of slavery, even if "every drop of blood drawn with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn by the sword" (Lincoln, p. 128). Thus the inaugural, claiming that the Civil War is the unraveling of God's justice, undermines Lincoln's claim that it as a test. Thurow's solution - the second inaugural "transcends" the Gettysburg address. One is from the point of view of the nation, the other from that of God. Thurow argues that "These perspectives do not abolish each other; neither expresses the whole truth" (p. 140). You may find this more convincing then I do - it seems to me that this is merely one of the inherent contradictions in postulations about God - if the Lord is righteous, free will could not exist.
David A. Nichols's "Lincoln and the Indians" discusses the relations between the Sixteenth president and Native Americans. Essentially, Lincoln was well meaning but too busy with the Civil War to help American Indians, and his racist views affected him.
The weakest of the essay in this section is Lawanda Cox's "Lincoln and Black Freedom" arguing that Lincoln, though racist, was a great friend of the blacks.
The third section, titled "The Psychohistorian's Lincoln", is about Psychohistory, a historical method that was briefly popular in the 1980s. It attempts to use the insights of psychoanalysis in History. Psychohistory seems to have gone away with the eighties, and if these essays are any indication, that is no great loss for scholarship.
The psychohistorians make claims which are sometimes surprising, but usually merely silly. Charles B. Strozier argues that "after 1854 [Lincoln] found his private concerns with intimacy and a troubled union [his marriage] reflected in the country" (p. 405). Dwight G. Anderson argues that the dead President Lincoln saw in his dream in April 1865 was George Washington, and that Lincoln was his "ghostly assassin" (p. 254). In a slightly saner mold, George B. Forgie argues that Lincoln believed that the real threat to the Union was not the South, but a few evil conspirators in the leadership of the Democratic party, and that when the young Lincoln argued that the threat for the republic was in talented, over ambitious men who would turn into Tyrants, " [It] seems obvious enough: Lincoln had himself in mind when he composed the entire speech."(p.296).
The section titled "Assassinations" deals with Lincoln's murder in history and historiography, and particularly with the conspiracy theories that grew after the Death, believing everyone from secretary of war Stanton the Freemasons to be behind the assassination.
The Final section, "The Lincoln Biographies" contains book reviews by Richard N. Current and Don E. Fehernbacher. Current is enthusiastic about Stephen Oates's "With Malice Towards None", but argues that Oates makes Lincoln more of a radical then he really was. Feherenbacher's discussion of Gore Vidal's Lincoln is sadly all too brief, but it is a fascinating if inconclusive discussion about the criteria upon which historical works of fiction should be evaluated.
'The Historian's Lincoln' is a fascinating read, and even the essays about Psychohistory, which are hardly illuminating about Lincoln, tell us much about the Historian of the title.

The Roosevelt Presence: The Life and Legacy of FDR

Book Description
Franklin D. Roosevelt is the only twentieth-century president consistently ranked by historians with the Founding Fathers and Abraham Lincoln. His leadership in the dark hours of the Depression and the Second World War has endowed him in the eyes of many with an aura of greatness, and his presidency has been the explicit or implicit model for all of his successors, from Truman to Clinton. In this concise biography, Patrick J. Maney provides an original and insightful reexamination of Roosevelt's life and legacy, carefully sifting fact from myth and showing how the Roosevelt legend--for good and for ill--has shaped the modern presidency.Customer Reviews:
Apologist History.......2004-02-15
Disappointing, at times bizarre!.......2003-05-19
Unlike most books written about FDR from the left, Maney does address some of the low points in Roosevelt's presidency. However, when doing so he at times goes into bizarre explanations/justifications which left me scratching my head. For example:
1) Roosevelt's plunging the recovering economy back into depression in 1937 by deliberately shrinking the money supply and reducing government spending. Explanation: He only meant to slow down the growth of the economy, he couldn't have expected this to slow down the economy.
2) Roosevelt's decision to imprison Japanese Americans in WWII against the advice of J. Edgar Hoover (no softie on security!). Explanation: It wasn't his fault, he was given bad advice by the people he appointed.
3) Roosevelt's postwar plan to create a soviet style economic model in the US where the government could dictate which job any person had ("labor draft"), and guaranteed food, shelter, clothing, and recreation to all in return. Explanation: The fact that he didn't advocate the abolition of corporations and the total redistribution of all wealth shows that Roosevelt was becoming a moderate.
I wouldn't have believed these examples (and others), had I not read the book! The other thing that surprised me were some of the horrifying things Roosevelt did which clearly didn't bother the author at all. For example, neither Roosevelt's attempt to "purge" the Democratic party of those he deemed not ideologically pure, nor his breaking the back of the supreme court in the infamous "court packing" case troubled the author.
With all this said, the worst part of the book by far was the concluding chapter "Reputation and Legacies". This last rambling chapter bemoans the fact that President Carter could not have predicted from FDR's experience that restricting the national oil supply would create a recession. He drones on for several pages on this theme of how FDR let the world down by not having the foresight to give advice to future Democratic presidents. The final paragraph concludes with "There is much to admire about Roosevelt... yet as the experience of his successors helped confirm, his greatness was much too deeply rooted in the circumstances of his own times... Among presidents, alas, [FDR] was not a man for all seasons." While I'm not opposed to criticizing Roosevelt, this is as unfair as it is disappointing. How can we blame FDR for addressing the key issues during his presidency? At the same time, important topics like the legacy of Social Security, FDR's decision to give Stalin N. Korea, the complicity of members from the Roosevelt administration in bringing Mao to power in China (to name a few) are left undiscussed.
an excellent and perceptive book.......2001-08-31
When it comes to FDR, far too many readers, including a number of other reviewers here, only want to hear about positive aspects: the New Deal, winning World War II, etc. As a professional historian, Maney is not in the business of producing such hagiographies. As such, what we have here is the cool judgment and dispassionate analysis of a writer who is constructing a narrative of the historical record; not someone who is cheerleading for a particular political persuasion. Those who want a softer and friendlier treatment of Roosevelt should look elsewhere.
In addition to Roosevelt's many triumphs, Maney provides great detail about some of FDR's more negative aspects, such the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, or his near pathological secrecy that kept him from grooming a successor. Maney also lays bare Roosevelt's personal peccadilloes, such as his long-term affair with Lucy Mercer.
In the end, Maney has done a fine job of presenting Roosevelt, and he should be commended.
Ya'll need to step off.......2001-05-14
A confused and error-laden examination.......2001-03-26
FDR made mistakes in judgment (attempting to pack the Supreme Court), but he was the quintessential and perfect leader for this country in the midst of its greatest crisis of the past 100 years. Imagine Tom Dewey or Wilkie leading this nation against the Axis powers. Contemplate that one... if you dare!
There are many outstanding examinations of Franklin Roosevelt and this is certainly not one of them. It's a polemic and poorly written attempt to diminish FDR's influence and greatness. It fails on all levels. The only people who would embrace this treatment would be the die-hard Roosevelt haters.

A Man and His Mother: An Adopted Son's Search
Tim Green Manufacturer: Harpercollins ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:

With his usual intelligence and emotional honesty, former football star Tim Green (now a novelist and commentator on National Public Radio) tackles the subject of his search for his biological mother in A Man and His Mother. His account of their first meeting is deeply moving; a subsequent encounter with his natural father is described with respect for the older man's feelings. Most affecting of all is the loving portrait of Green's adoptive mother and father ("the only parents I ever had"), which reminds us that being a parent involves much more than genes.Book Description
For years, Tim Green seemed to be living the American dream. A handsome, intelligent honor student, he was also a strapping 6'2, 250-pound All-American defensive end at Syracuse University, where he led the historically successful football program back to national prominence. On the strength of his stellar college football years, Tim became a coveted first-round draft choice of the Atlanta Falcons, going on to a sensational career in the NFL.But appearances can be deceiving. There was a void that numerous academic accolades and the adoration of cheering fans could not fill. Though he was raised in a loving and supportive family, Tim, an adopted child, had always longed to find his biological mother. But it was not until the mother of an ex-girlfriend confessed to him that she had given up a son a son who would have been about Tim's age that the full weight of what it meant to be adopted came down on him. Tim acutely felt the need to locate his biological mother, to let her know that he was all right, that he was successful and happy. Empathizing with the feelings of loss and regret that a mother who had given up a child must feel, he sought not only to find answers to his own questions but to answer those of his biological mother a woman who somewhere, sometimes, must have thought of the son she could not keep. Bolstered by the love and support of his adoptive parents, Tim embarked on an odyssey to discover the woman who had given him his life and then left him before she could become a part of it.
A Man and His Mother is the extraordinary story of one man's courageous search for the mother he never knew. Expertly written and filled with brilliant insights and heart-wrenching remembrances, as well as gentle humor, it is more than just a compelling look at what it means to be adopted. From Tim's life as a gangly youngster to competing in the grueling National Football League to having children of his own, this is an impassioned exploration of the special relationship between and a man and his mother, and how deeply this relationship affects everything we do in our lives.
