Book Description
This volume focuses on current problems in banking that have the potential not only for disrupting the smooth provision of banking and other financial services, but also for adversely affecting domestic and even international macroeconomic activity. Because serious banking problems have been experienced in most countries in recent years, the papers both focus on fragility and regulation in different countries and are authored by leading financial economists in six different countries including Belgium, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. By providing an international perspective, the papers provide insights into the commonality of banking problems in different countries and the role of regulation both in attempting to prevent and in potentially, albeit unintentionally, encouraging bank crises. As such, the papers add to our storehouse of knowledge on the causes, symptoms, and consequences of banking problems across countries.

Book Description
Given that the question of an internal magnetic field is of fundamental importance to the understanding of Mars' formation and thermal evolution, and of the evolution of Mars' atmosphere, surprisingly few of the many spacecraft sent to Mars were equipped with instrumentation for such investigations. Of the 9 or so orbiters that have successfully archived Mars orbit, even if for a short period of time, only two have returned useful data about the magnetic field and about the plasma environment near Mars: The Phobos 2 spacecraft, and more recently, Mars Global Surveyor (MGS). With the discovery by MGS that Mars has large remnant magnetic field structures indicating an internal dynamo long extinct, the true nature of the past and present interaction between Mars and the solar wind comes, for the first time, into sharp focus. This work, detailing the integration and new interpretation of the MGS and Phobos results, is a primary reference for the researcher studying solar wind/planet interactions.

Book Description
Everyone involved in paper making knows Asten as a world class manufacturer of paper machine clothing. Perhaps less well known is that Asten started in this industry more than 120 years ago. Since then the company has taken advantage of modern manufacturing techniques to produce innovative products needed by the growing paper making industry. That is why Asten commissioned Dr. Sabit Adanur to write this book - to continue spreading sophisticated papermaking knowledge throughout the global paper industry. This book discusses how the latest technological innovations help produce quality paper products. It also covers the use of TQM and computers in the papermaking process as basic paper structure and properties.

An Excellent Memoir on Punctuated Equilibria.......2002-04-23
This is yet another fine book on science which deserves to be republished. Originally published by Simon and Schuster, "Time Frames" is a well written account by noted paleobiologist Niles Eldredge on his doctoral research on the systematics and evolutionary history of the North American Devonian trilobite genus which led to the development of the theory of "Punctuated Equilibrium"; the theory was first introduced in a symposium volume on paleontology as the subject of an article written by Eldredge and Stephen Jay Gould. Eldredge offers a fascinating glimpse into field and theoretical paleontological research which should appeal to those interested in science. Why it is now out of print again is surely a mystery to me.

researching the history of evolution.......2002-08-20
Dr. Eldredge is a curator of paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History. He and Dr. Stephen J Gould developed what may be the most critical appendix to Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection since Ernst Mayr's biological species concept. In short the theory of punctuated equilibria states that species are in evolutionary stasis for long periods of time and when a useful adaptation appears it will spread rapidly through the population. It is not the theory that makes this book a good read. It is the way that the author describes how he and Dr. Gould came to it. Dr. Eldredge is an expert on trilobites, a group of aquatic arthropods that went extinct before the dinosaurs appeared. Following him as he explorers the fossil record of these creatures is as much a lesson in perseverance and good science as it is in evolutionary theory. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in any field of organismal biology, it would be a "must read" for people who are particularly interested in evolution and or paleontology.

I passed Physics thanks to this book........2005-09-28
Being a Computer Science major, when I took Physics in college I opted to take "Physics for Science majors" instead of an easier version for liberal arts types. I was taking Calculus I at the same time as I was taking Physics. Big mistake. My Physics class seemed to be largely based upon deriving formulas (F=ma and the like) from first principles. This, of course involved lots of Calculus and higher math.
I got a solid "D" on my first Physics test, followed by a 52% on the next quiz and an astonishing 32% on the third quiz. I went to my Physics professor and asked how could I arrange for tutoring. He replied, "Do don't need a tutor. You don't have the math for this course. You need this book instead".
Guess what, I got an 89% on the mid term exam and managed to pull out a passing grade in spite of my horrible beginning. Granted, a lot of hard work and studying went into that 89%, but I couldn't have done it without the "Don't be a dodo" book.
This book does not assume that you know Calculus and in my opinion does a great job explaining how to apply the various formulas that you must know. It won't give you the rigorous background necessary for a PhD. in Physics, but it will improve your Physics grade.
This book SAVED my college career. It could save yours as well.

This book is terrible. I can't believe they let this man teach physics!

Book Description
A book of eye-catching similarities between celebrities.
Book Description
Airborne operations have often been called a vertical envelopment, and therein lies one of the best descriptions of their value. The essence of an envelopment is to pin the enemy in place so that it can be destroyed. A strong enemy force to one's rear disrupts supplies and communications and makes one more vulnerable to an attack from the front. It also has a major psychological impact. To an aggressor the value of airborne troops, used properly, far outweighs their numerical strength. Bruce Quarrie's engaging text tells the story of the German airborne troops of the Second World War.
Customer Reviews:
informative.......1998-05-06
This is a very well written book that covers all aspects of German Paratroopers in World War II, but it in some areas it can be quite brief and sue to the small size of the book, the author is not able to go into small details about some of the equipment. For an expert on the subject, the information might seem a little redundant, but for someone who doesn't know a great deal about Fallschirmjagers, the book would be quite interesting. I learned a lot after reading the book and even now i sometimes go back to look up information. I live near Fort Bragg, NC, and this book would be interesting to paratroopers who want to learn about other nations' airborne forces.
Book Description
The fascinating tale of one of the most remarkable inventions in human history and its effects on science, myth, religion, manners, and the arts.
Of all human inventions, the mirror is perhaps the one most closely connected to our own consciousness. As our first technology for contemplation of the self, the mirror is arguably as important an invention as the wheel. Mirror Mirror is the fascinating story of the mirror's invention, refinement, and use in an astonishing range of human activities--from the fantastic mirrored rooms that wealthy Romans created for their orgies to the mirror's key role in the use and understanding of light.
Pendergrast spins tales of the 2,500-year mystery of whether Archimedes and his "burning mirror" really set faraway Roman ships on fire; the medieval Venetian glassmakers, who perfected the technique of making large, flat mirrors from clear glass and for whom any attempt to leave their cloistered island was punishable by death; Isaac Newton, whose experiments with sunlight on mirrors once left him blinded for three days; the artist David Hockney, who holds controversial ideas about Renaissance artists and their use of optical devices; and George Ellery Hale, the manic-depressive astronomer and telescope enthusiast who inspired (and gave his name to) the twentieth century's largest ground-based telescope. Like mirrors themselves, Mirror Mirror is a book of endless wonder and fascination.
Customer Reviews:
Just Pendergrast.......2004-07-28
As he did with his history of coffee, Pendergrast once again grasps the influence of one item in human history and, thus, modern society. His grasp of the scientific phenomennon involvig mirrors, and the importance of the study of light in modern science, the relativisti theory, etc. makes this book a more than complete insight into human history, "Through the Looking Glass".
I value Pendergrast's books for the perspective they provide to history, and the way he manages to make the whole subject entertaining. This book is not only educative in history and science, but also an easy read.
A fascinating book.......2003-11-20
Mark Pendergrast has a talent for writing about a complex subject and making it both understandable and entertaining. Having read his most recent book, Mirror Mirror, I am impressed with the author's versatility and research capability. In writing about the mirror, Pendergrast has explored its history and use in religion, magic, science, art, space exploration, as well as an item of vanity and self indulgence. He has presented his findings in a way that is both enjoyable and educational. The people written about range from early scientists such as Archimedes and Galileo to the modern researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
The New York Times Book Review, which led me to purchase Mirror Mirror, states that it is the equivalent of a liberal arts education. I'm inclined to agree with that assessment. Give Mirror Mirror a 5-star rating.
Reflections on Mirror Mirror.......2003-11-18
Mirror, Mirror is a fascinating read not only for those lovers of the technical but also for those more interested in human history--as I am. Pendergrast explains scientific and technical concepts clearly. What I particularly loved about the book--besides learning a great deal about the history of science--was the way he wove in the human story. Pendergrast makes names like Herschel and Newton come alive as real people with distinct personalities. Reading a book of such quality and scope is my favorite way of learning about history and science.
A Wonderful Reflection on a Fascinating Subject.......2003-11-18
As an artist and a psychotherapist-in-training, this book appealed to me on many levels. It's a well-researched investigation of the history of mirroring and mirror-making, the mystical and the everyday practical use of mirrors, the psychological dimensions, etc. The story of the importance of mirrors in the history of the telescope, and mankind's resultant ability to investigate the cosmos is comprehensively presented. Dense and technical in places, but fun and insightful in others. Worth the read just to get to the last chapter titled, "Final Reflections: Illusions and Realities".
A nice addition to a sparse literature!!!.......2003-11-17
As a person somewhat 'expert' in mirror research (see Keenan et al., The Face in the Mirror: The Search for the Origins of Consciousness), I am always on the lookout for solid research on the topic of mirrors. Mark Pendergrast has put together a great book on the topic. This is the most comprehensive title that one can buy if interested in the history of mirrors.
His reserach is pretty amazing. Even though I have researched the topic for years, I still learned a tremendous amount reading this book. It is noted that Mark Pendergrast makes the reading entertaining. A nice surprise.
Thumbs up all the way...
Julian Paul Keenan
