5 out of 5 stars Well-written book for senior managers and HR professionals.......2000-01-19

While probably not the definitive book on mentoring - this book is a must read for all management teams that are trying to change their culture to a high performance, learning organizations.

The book presents information explaining the potential benefits of mentoring (the why); provides insights and direction for establishing a comprehensive mentoring program (the what); and presents information that enables the reader to understand the critical elements of a effective mentoring program and the steps necessary to create a mentoring organization (the how).

As a long time CEO who has specialized in helping transitioning companies achieve improved performance, and more importantly, building high performance cultures, Mr. Johnson provides many practical strategies for transforming the human resources of the company through mentoring. Mr. Johnson has identified six principles for exceptional performance from which he had developed a Strategic Mentoring Model. The Strategic Mentoring Model focuses on nine distinct strategies of learning, leading and relating for individual, team and organization. Mr. Johnson concludes that leadership for a mentoring culture must come from the CEO and the management team.

Although the principles and model he has presented are good, I found his insights to leadership and behavior styles more valuable.

This book gives a brief outline of the different cosmic models (steady state, Big Bang, the anthropic principle) and an explanation of the instruments and techniques used to explore the cosmos.
It is a little bit out of date.
I also missed the swinging style and the speculations of John Gribbin's 'In the Beginning' or Martin Rees' 'Before the Beginning'.
For a more profound and up-to-date introduction to cosmology I recommend the more difficult book 'The elegant Universe' by Brian Greene.

I first came across this book in my English class during my freshman year in college. It was very easy to read, and most of all, it was very inspirational. It's a great book to read when you're looking for something to enjoy peacefully, and yet, think about. Highly recommended!

          Book Description

This edited volume is a collection of population and metapopulation models for a wide variety of species, including plants, invertebrates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Each chapter of the book describes the application of RAMAS GIS 4.0 to one species, with the aim of demonstrating how various life history characteristics of the species are incorporated into the model, and how the results of the model has been or can be used in conservation and management of the species. The book comes with a CD that includes a demo version of the program, and the data files for each species.

5 out of 5 stars Good, Practical Examples.......2005-05-11

This book addresses the use of computer models in species conservation and management. It is a very informative book that will be of great value to graduate conservation biology courses, government agencies, and land managers. The book consists of a series of sections on plants, invertebrates, fish, herps, birds, and mammals. Each section has a summary chapter discussing the state of the art for that taxonomic group and a number of case studies. Some of the summary chapters, such as the amphibian and reptile chapter, are excellent. The case studies are informative and give the reader a good view of the breath of modeling studies that have been done to date. An accompanying CD provides a number of example models that the reader can use to explore the power of these procedures. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Professor, Dept. Fishery and Wildlife Biology, Colorado Stat.......2005-02-05

This edited book covers conservation planning and population viability analyses in a clear and comprehensive fashion. The inclusion of chapters on plants, invertebrates, fishes, birds and mammals makes it particularly attractive for teaching students with broad taxonomic interests in conservation biology. Each chapter uses models from the software program RAMAS GIS which accompanies the book on CD. I use the RAMAS GIS software in my graduate course in landscape ecology and the material in this book provided a great diversity of data sets and case histories. The program has excellent graphics and is well documented enabling the reader to understand what models are being used and the assumptions of those models. I strongly recommend the book for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in population and conservation biology.

4 out of 5 stars includes the best climbing novel ever written.......2005-01-02

Climbing just doesn't seem to produce much good fiction. I don't know why. There are some great non-fiction climbing authors, but the good fiction is sparse and the excellent fiction is almost non-existent.

Without a doubt, the best novel ever written about climbing is Elizabeth Coxhead's "One Green Bottle", and it can be found in this collection. Coxhead's novel follows a young woman from England's lower class who accidentally gets involved in climbing and finds not only an escape from a life of drudgery but also romance and adventure. I don't know if a non-climber would understand how perfectly Coxhead captures the climbing sub-culture, but even a non-climber should be able to love this story. Many people over the years, though, have found themselves shocked and saddened by the ending. Read it for yourself and see what you think.

Another decent novel in here is "The Vortex", a drug smuggling and climbing thriller which is what the movie "Cliffhanger" SHOULD have been like. (Cliffhanger has no connection with The Vortex.)

This book also includes Kim Stanley Robinson's "Mother Goddess Of The World", with the same characters who are in "Escape From Kathmandu".

It's been a while since I read this book, but those are the stories I remember well from it. It also includes many others, mostly short stories.

5 out of 5 stars Not Entirely His Fault.......2006-07-11

I think the author is trying to say the problems that plauged Russia after the collapse of the USSR was not all Yeltsin's fault. The IMF did not help matters nor did the former Communists who used their positions to loot the economy during privatization. Yeltsin too was a bit of a populist and as often happens populists make romantic rebels but horrible rulers. In the end the USSR was destroyed by the stupid 8 coup plotters who could not grasp the Soviet Union was not Guatemala and a coup in such a vast country was hopeless. The Republics were willing to sign the new union treaty but not after the coup. I was not fan of Gorbachev but history has proven he was right. If he had been allowed to do his program the USSR would still exists, and that whole region would be much more prosperous and stable than today.

                3 out of 5 stars Flawed hero.......2001-11-01

This is an important book, which helps to set the record straight on Yeltsin. It isn't entirely convincing though.

Stylistically it is fairly readable, though it is probably longer than it needs to be, and a bit heavy-going at times. As you might expect, it is not as readable as some of the journalistic accounts of Yeltsin's Russia. Aron relies a lot on formal sources like Yeltsin's speeches. Although he did go so far as to hunt down and interview some of Yeltsin's old acquaintances in Sverdlovsk, the same kind of intimacy with insiders is lacking later in the book.

One peculiarity of the book is the amount of space devoted to Yeltsin's career before he became president. This is both its strength and its weakness. Aron does a convincing job of showing that Yeltsin was no bumbling alcoholic, but a first-class manager and an astute analyst of Communism's failure. He rose to power because he was the quickest to recognise the irredeemable failure of the Soviet system which Gorbachev was trying to fix. Aron accurately depicts the Soviet economic collapse - something which gets almost forgotten today, when everyone wants to blame Russia's economic problems on Yeltsin.

Unlike the yes-men which the Communist hierarchy bred in droves, Yeltsin also had remarkable political courage. He showed this on several key occasions, most notably during the coup of 1991. Yeltsin correctly foresaw that the coup would fail, at a time when this was far from obvious to everyone else.

While the analysis of Yeltsin's early career is welcome, it could have been trimmed down. It seems a bit eccentric to devote less than a third of the book to Yeltsin's presidency (with only a single chapter on Yeltsin's second term). This compares with an entire chapter on a trip Yeltsin made to the US in the 1980s, for example.

The account of Yeltsin's presidency also makes some important points. Yeltsin's main political opponents were indeed a pretty unsavoury bunch, and not misunderstood social democrats. Yeltsin did launch real and necessary economic reforms - another act of political courage. Under Yeltsin, Russians have indeed become freer than at any previous time in their history.

But Russia isn't entirely democratic either. Aron skirts around some more unpleasant aspects of Yeltsin's rule. While he is surely right that there were many objective reasons why Russians voted for Yeltsin in 1996, several Yeltsin advisers have admitted that the elections would have been cancelled if Yeltsin had believed that he was going to lose. Fraudulent privatisations are mentioned, but they don't get much analysis. Sometimes we find that other inconvenient facts (like allegations of vote-rigging) are confined to footnotes.

As well as the bold (but rather intermittent) reformer, there was also another Yeltsin: the ex-Soviet apparatchik with his bevy of unpleasant cronies. This Yeltsin does crop up in Aron's autobiography, particularly in the second half of his first term. Aron is quite forthright in his condemnation of the Chechen war, for instance. But he regards this Yeltsin as a kind of temporary abberration.

The trouble is that this Yeltsin actually had a habit of recurring. The book ends rather abruptly with the appointment of the Primakov government in 1998, but extending the story to 2000 would probably not help Aron's rehabilitation of Yeltsin. The last year of Yeltsin's presidency was dominated by sordid corruption scandals, a new war in Chechnya, and an unceremonious struggle for succession.

All the same, the appointment of Putin looks a lot smarter than it did at the time (something which can be said about several of Yeltsin's mercurial hirings and firings). And with the political stability that Putin has provided, the economic reforms of the 1990s now seem to be bearing fruit. Despite fears over Putin's authoritarian tendencies, the democratic achievements of the 1990s also seem pretty secure.

A case can be made for saying that despite all the scandals, Yeltsin was guided in many key decisions by a consistent vision of a reformed and democratic Russia. This is essentially the case that Aron makes. Not everyone will be convinced, but Yeltsin probably deserves more credit than most people are inclined to give him these days.

4 out of 5 stars The Multi Revolutionary.......2000-10-13

The timing of this thorough, scholarly journey through the life of one of the twentieth century's true world historical figures is unfortunate. Released in mid 1999, it misses the final, and decidedly pivotal, story of Boris Yeltsin's last months in power, when he finally identified a worthy successor to carry the standard for free markets, democratic process, and rule of law in the erstwhile authoritarian Russian state. After gamely ushering the reader through the (almost literally)heart-stopping crises and byzantine political intrigues of Yeltin's career, the book ends with the ailing president mired in the financial debacle of 1998, running out of time and options, and forced to play ball with his reactionary Prime Minister. Luckily we all know how the story played out in the end, with Yeltsin's dramatic New Year's resignation and the ascension of Vladimir Putin to the presidency. As the reader comes to know Yeltsin in the course of this book, the scope of his political genius and daring reveals itself so plainly and effectively that this reader yearned to know something about why Putin impressed him to the point of bequeathing his legacy to him. Nonetheless, as a work of history rather than political evaluation, "Yeltsin: A Revolutionary Life", succeeds broadly in demonstrating the varied levels of its subject's titanic efforts to transform a near-death society into something which may well one day become a great nation. Yeltsin's successes unfold on three levels. The first, and most central to the book, is the defeat and dismantling of the inhuman Stalinist Soviet society which had strangled Russia for sixty years or more. This astounding victory set the stage for Yeltsin's assumption of the presidency, after full and free elections, and the various political victories he achieved over the course of his two terms in office. Finally, and probably most importantly for Russia and the rest of the world, Yeltsin began an irreversible process in this country for the first time in its history: a drive toward private property, free prices, and enterprise which began the nation's slow march into the community of liberal-minded societies. The book does a fine job of demonstrating the ruthless personal drive which propelled Yeltsin to greatness. From his early days in the semi-Siberian city of Sverdlosk, when he blew two fingers off his left hand while stealing munitions from a factory on a dare from some teenage friends, the author paints a vivid portrait of a budding iconoclast. This reader yearned for more about these formative years, but the thinness here is understandable, given the opaque nature of Soviet style historical documentation. The inner workings of the communist maze confounded Yeltsin as much as is does the reader--it's a truly incomprehensible system, and makes for slow going sometimes as we follow Yeltsin on his journey of discovery. It becomes exciting as his speeches start to reflect his sense of the waste and obscene inhumanity of the entire system. This reader was looking for that pivotal moment, though, that one or two unique events which crystallized Yeltsin's thinking and made him realize his destiny. Sadly, those moments are buried as effectively as the system Yeltsin brought down. This book gives us a great record of the "how" of what happened, but only hints helplessly at the "why". All in all, it's an ambitious read, but an informative and thoroughly competent one. In a way, it makes sense to leave Yeltsin at the end struggling and fighting away against his physical and political decline. This is the milieu in which he clearly thrived. Overall victory seemed to soften him. So, in order to get a sense of the real man, perhaps we have to forgo the happy ending.

1 out of 5 stars One Biiiiig Lie.......2000-05-12

This is a whitewash from beginning to end. Nobody who knows contemporary Russia could endure it. Therefore, Aron must be addressing an audience deeply ignorant of Russia. Who else would stand for a biography of Yeltsin which in 750 pages makes only four brief references to Boris Berezovskiy? Writing a Yeltsin biography without including Berezovskiy is like writing the Life of Pinocchio without mentioning the carpenter!

Yet Aron expects to get away with it--and based on the reviews of this book, he will succeed. The New York Times has termed Aron's book "a fine, full-blooded portrait of Yeltsin." With the help of ignorant blurbs like that one, Aron's target readers will end up believing that Yeltsin and his friends were doing God's work, or at least Adam Smith's--rather than divvying up the plunder of a fallen empire while its stunned, exhausted people were too weak to resist.

None of the great scandals of Yeltsin's reign are mentioned, let alone explained. Where's the Loans-for-Shares scheme, possibly the biggest single act of embezzlement of the twentieth century? Aron has such contempt for his readers that rather than come up with an alibi for Yeltsin, he never so much as mentions the whole sleazy deal. In fact, Aron has so little respect for his readers that he actually attempts to tell them that the oligarchs are a myth:

"...The secrecy in which the Russian robber barons cloaked their dealings resulted in a vast exaggeration of their wealth and power both by the Moscow rumour mill and by the resident correspondents of Western newspapers and television networks..."

Having assured his readers that Yeltsin's accomplices are mythical beasts, he goes on to deny, without elaboration, some well-proven charges against Yeltsin:

"...equally bizarre [is] the 'theory' that explained Yeltsin's dependence on the oligarchs by the gifts which they showered on his family--as if the President of Russia, should he decide to do so, needed intermediaries in raiding the country's treasury."

What's so "bizarre" about that "theory"? "Intermediaries in raiding the country's treasury" is, if anything, a mild description of people like Berezovskiy and Chubais, who may well be remembered as the greatest thieves in the history of the world. Yeltsin's job was to present a "democratic" face to the West while the robbery was being carried out, not to heft the sacks of cash out to the car by himself. (He's not in that kind of condition.) That's not a "bizarre theory"; that's simple division of labour.

But the sleaziest move of all is Aron's slander of every Russian who objected to Yeltsin's regime. Aron, trusting once more that his audience is totally ignorant of Russia, dares to assert that all those who opposed Yeltsin were anti-Semitic fascists. In other words, Russians who objected to seeing their jobs, their savings, their country whisked away were no more than Jew-baiting racists. What to do, then, with a man like Yavlinsky, the half-Jewish leader of the only truly democratic anti-corruption party in the Duma? Aron, whose tolerance extends to monsters like Chubais, loses control whenever he's forced to mention Yavlinsky's name. In Aron's grovelling tale of the Yeltsinschina, Yavlinsky--virtually the only uncorrupted politician in contemporary Russia--becomes a villian.

Goebbels would be proud to have written this book. Aron was no doubt well paid to string together so many pages without a glimmer of truth. And judging by the response of the American press, it was money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent insights into a complicated character.......2000-04-14

As a resident of Moscow during the last three years of the Soviet Union, and a frequent visitor ever since, I witness first-hand many of the events that are described in this book. However, much of the information on the inner workings that went on behind the scenes were, of course, unknown to me. I also did not know much about Yeltsin's Sverdlovsk days. This book provides a thrilling account of all these things, and proves to be a very easy read (particularly if you are somewhat familiar with the material and don't have to decipher the Russian terms). The editing of the book could be a bit better, but the material stands on its own and should be a must-read for anyone with an abiding interest in the goings-on in Russia. It's only too bad that the book was finished before the emergence of V. Putin and Yeltsin's resignation at the end of last year.

In More Than Petticoats, the reader is introduced to fourteen extraordinary and memorable women from North Carolina. Each of this remarkable women were alive at important historical junctions of the state's history ranging from the Revolutionary War, to the Civil War, to the beginning of the 20th Century. These were women who saw reformation all around them and realized that they too could contribute and promote change. There was Emeline Jamison Pigott, a Confederate spy; Mary Martin Sloop, a physician, community leader, and child welfare advocate in the hills of the Blue Ride; Maggie Axe Wachacha, a healer, teacher, and Cherokee leader; Cornelia Phillips Spencer, who helped liberate the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and eleven others who each directly addressed the challenges of their respective times and places. Their enduring contributions are here chronicled in absorbing and informative biographical sketches, providing a highly recommended addition to women's studies and American history reading lists.

                    Book Description

Racing to a Cure is not a cancer memoir. It is a cancer cure memoir. In 1998 Neil Ruzic was diagnosed with mantle-cell lymphoma, the deadliest cancer of the lymph system, whose spread is reaching epidemic levels in the U.S. and Europe. Instead of following recommended courses of chemotherapy and radiation, he took control of his treatment by investigating cures being developed in the nation's cancer-research laboratories.

Although chemotherapy harms the immune system and is increasingly demonstrated to be an ineffective long-term cure for the vast majority of cancers, it remains the standard treatment for most cancer patients. Ruzic, a former scientific magazine publisher and originator of a science center, refused to accept this status quo, and instead plunged into the world of cutting-edge treatments, exploring the frontiers of cancer science with revolutionary results.

Ruzic went on the offensive: visiting scores of laboratories, gathering information, talking to researchers, and effectively becoming his own patient-care advocate. This book presents his findings. A scathing critique of the chemotherapy culture as well as unscientific "alternative" therapies, the book endorses state-of-the-art molecularly based technologies, making it an illuminating and necessary read for anyone interested in cancer research, especially patients and their families and physicians.

Neil Ruzic was expected to die within two years of his initial diagnosis. Five years later he has been declared cancer-free and considers himself cured.

Having had lymphoma for five years now, I was eager to read Ruzic's book. I learned quite a bit -- or at least terms to use in my never-ending research into indolent lymphoma. Four years ago, I had been so sick that I could hardly walk across a room; I coughed incessantly, and if I ate anything, it came up the next time I coughed. I had just about every test anyone could imagine, but the malignancy never surfaced as the cause for my horrible night sweats, constant weight loss, endless coughing. My doctor thought I had lymphoma, but even after two weeks in the hospital, no one could find anything to blame the symptoms on.

In desperation, my husband got me an appointment with an oncologist at UAB in Birmingham, AL (250 miles from home); my doctor there did the usual biopsies, which continued to be
"Inconclusive." However, he had a DNA study done, and eventually, he found my aggressive Type B Lymphoma. I received CHOP and Rituxan for 8 treatments--my husband drove me to Birmingham for each treatment--I still go to Birmingham for my CT scans and treatments. After the first treatment, I began to feel much better than before. I have not experienced the terrible side effects Ruzic describes of chemo. The staff at UAB was very well trained in ways to avoid nausea and pain. I was also on Nulasta to build white cells. After two years, I was declared "cured" because aggressive lymphoma almost always resurfaces if it is going to within two years. However, after three years, I discovered swollen lymph nodes again. When I had a biopsy again in Birmingham, the diagnosis was malignancy, but for indolent lymphoma, non-curable. The oncologist says that I had indolent lymphoma all along, but it had transformed to agressive in 2002; now I'm looking at treatments for the rest of my life because indolent is not curable.

I am presently receiving Cytoxin, Prednisone, and Rituxan.
I tell my story here so that you will understand "where I'm coming from" regarding Racing to a Cure. I disagree with Ruzic's description of the chemo culture; I've found caring, professional people trying to help me "get my life back." During the three years I was in remission, I saw my grandson born, and then my granddaughter. I consider the three years that chemo gave me a special blessing and a great gift.

I wish all cancer victims had the time and money to do the things Ruzic did -- I can't even imagine getting into the places he got into, and knowing the people he knew. His studies certainly add a measure to our understanding of biologic treatment and give us hope for something better than chemo.

But I have to "stick up for chemo" and the value it has added to my life. Receiving Rituxan in my initial treatment and again after my relapse certainly came at just the right time in 2002 and then in 2006. I don't know if I would have made it without Rituxan.

I was so sorry to read that Mr. Ruzic has succumbed to lymphoma. I am thankful for his research and its preservation in the form of a book which is easy to read, but at times, I thought I was reading some sort of science fiction book. (Alas, the traveling and so forth made me think of _Gulliver's Travels_); however, I am probably too harsh a judge, being a college English professor.

These are my impressions of the book and the reasons I awarded the book only three stars. I am thankful for chemo and Rituxan!
I think every lymphoma patient should read the book for the possibilites Ruzic discusses, nonetheless. I celebrated by 59th birthday yesterday, and every day I live now is very special to me; I know I would not have lived another three months without chemo in 2002.

1 out of 5 stars Good points, but the end result, bad news.......2006-05-01

I read the book, then found out that the author died after writing it - how saddening that was. Yes, I have to give credit where credit is due - a lot of good points were brought out, but I've since found other books on healing methods that aren't damaging to the body that are more current with better info and the authors are alive and well after using their own advice.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Ruzic died.......2004-06-30

Mr. Ruzic died in late January 2004. His illness returned and claimed his life a few months after the book published. Nevertheless, his efforts and spirit as described in this book are heroic, and our medical practitioners have a lot to learn about how to train people and think objectively.

5 out of 5 stars Please Be Aware Of His Current Condition.......2004-01-26

I found this book to be excellent and recommend it as required reading to anyone who is currently battling cancer. However, please be aware that shortly after the book was published, Mr. Ruzic's cancer returned. The knowledge he gained during his hunt for the cure is invaluable - a real eye-opener to world of cancer treatment. He managed to excellently stem the progress of his cancer without using chemotherapy until this past year.

If you have cancer or are close to one who does, please read the book, but understand that the author had not yet been cured.

5 out of 5 stars A real life adventure with the ultimate stakes--saving lives.......2004-01-25

I loved this book. Read it!! It really should have been publicized much more; far lesser books end up on the NYT bestsellers list. It is a true adventure story about a man diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma (one of the worst cancers) who refuses to be just another sheep within America's "chemo culture". Instead, he crisscrosses the country in his own airplane, meeting and talking to scientists (the true cancer doctors) within their own laboratories, at the cutting edge of knowledge, in order to try to find a cure for his disease. This book was truly eye-opening, and it is even worth a second-read. It was written with the painstaking efforts of a great science writer who can effectively communicate to the layman and hold the interest of scientists at the same time, something that's very hard to do. I applaud Mr. Ruzic's achievements and his selfless efforts to help others who haven't been blessed with his intellect and financial advantages in life. We need people like him in government. Things really need to be shaken up in the FDA. Ironically, the slow progress in the development of effective new clinical treatments for cancer continues at a time when the scientific understanding of cancer and its molecular bases has grown by leaps and bounds in the past 8 years. One problem appears to be that oncologists have their hands tied by the FDA, and as a result, they often neglect to keep up with the latest developments. This is why we continue to lose so many people to cancer, and so many cancers remain completely incurable (e.g. pancreatic cancer). For instance, even with new cancer vaccines and monoclonal antibodies under development, virtually all clinical trials today require the patient to first take massive doses of highly toxic chemotherapeutic agents. Often cocktails of toxic chemotherapeutic drugs are used that simultaneously devastate the immune system and end up making the cancer refractory to further treatment. What remedies can be taken against this wrong-headed philosophy in order get more of the latest less toxic biotherapies from the lab and into the clinic NOW? After reading this book, it is clear to me that the hospital administrators overseeing the oncology residency programs in America need to be replaced with fresh blood. Also, the FDA needs to be reformed from the ground up. I especially liked one quote in this book, which I have found to be so true, "Welcome to the world of cancer, where doctors are witches and patients are doctors........" Such is the state of affairs in this country, where our government has given us third-rate medical care for cancer, with doctors who fill your body with toxins and then leave you for dead, telling you there is nothing more that can be done. We deserve better treatment, even if that simply means regaining our God-given freedom to treat our own bodies against this dreaded disease.
