The book presents four major irrefutable flaws in the foundation of evolution. It focuses on the subjects of mutations, information, the cell and the Cambrian Explosion to expose gaping holes in evolution. Discover the fissures that expose the vulnerability of evolution while providing a satisfying model of creation. 5 out of 5 stars Sound arguements. Excellent gift........2005-09-02

I read this book yesterday, today I odered 5 more copies. A well written book, in language that almost anyone can understand. Yet, it provides very sound, logical arguements. Irrefutable. An excellent gift idea. This is a great book! I will very likely order more copies in the future. I wish I would have found this book years ago.

                          5 out of 5 stars Creation/evolution debate.......2004-06-09

While there are any number of good books on this topic, this one has some features I found particularly helpful. First of all, the terms used were clearly defined. I didn't have to wade through pages trying to find definitions. Secondly, the arguments presented were not only understandable, but usable. I felt I gained enough information about both sides to defend my position if I were involved in a discussion of this issue. Finally, the authors provided several questions at the end of each chapter that helped me think about what I'd read and gain a better understanding of the material.
All in all, Evolution Shot Full of Holes is a book that I will refer back to and recommend to others.

My boss at work knows that I devour books, and dropped this one off at my desk a short time back... The Traveler's Gift: Seven Decisions that Determine Personal Success by Andy Andrews. I read it straight through yesterday (it's short), and the first thing I'm doing after this review is ordering my own copy. This is a book I'll not quickly forget...

"Gift" is a personal improvement book that's written in story form, similar in nature to a parable. The main character, David Ponder, is 46 and has hit rock bottom (or so he thinks). Deep in debt, fired from a menial job, and concerned over a sick child, he considers taking his own life so that the family can collect on the insurance policy. As he comes to after the car wreck, he finds himself transported back in time, into the office of Harry S. Truman during the Potsdam conference. Truman is the only person who can see him, and Ponder's appearance was expected. Truman's job is to present Ponder with a written "decision", a statement that David must internalize and live out. Once the paper is read, Ponder is moved on to the next person and time. This time travel happens seven times, giving David 7 pieces of wisdom that will change his life if he lets them. Before he's brought back to reality, he's offered a glimpse of the future of his home town, a future that was possible with the seven decisions that Ponder internalized then shared with the world.

The cynical reader will likely see this as a bunch of happy talk fluff that isn't realistic. But I would counter that it's more realistic than most other philosophies and self-help books you'll ever read. The people used in the story are perfect matches for each of the learning points, and you realize that a single decision *can* have consequences that reverberate down through history and time. And the people who make the decisions are often ordinary individuals like you and me. The only difference is that they *made* the decision rather than accept the status quo.

The path to success isn't easy, but it's a matter of decisions you make on a day-to-day basis. Andrews captures this truth in a style reminiscent of Og Mandino's writings. I loved this book, and will be revisiting it on a regular basis...

2 out of 5 stars Great Reading for the Dentist's Office.......2007-09-11

This book was given to me as a birthday gift, so it's not my normal reading fare, even though I do like self-help books. The story here is hokey: a guy (David Ponder, can you begin to see the symbolism yet?) is down on his luck, just lost his job; he has no money, a beater for a car, and sick kid; he just wants to end it all. (Can you feel the cliches coming?) Well, as his car spins out of control on a slippery bridge, he goes on adventure in which different (real) historical figures (like Abraham Lincoln or Anne Frank) each give him a message about living successfully.

Why do self-help books always have 7 messages? Anyway, the messages are helpful reminders of living the good life, stuff that probably wouldn't hurt anyone to be reminded of: Remember the buck stops with you; be a person of action, happiness is a choice, that sort of thing. There are no startling revelations, and the book and its messages struck me as self-evident and simplistic. One of the real advantages of the book is that it is short. So, if you are ever stuck in an airport, doctor's office, or somewhere else with poor reading material and you need to kill a little time, you might even enjoy it. Recommended reading by "Good Morning America" if that means anything to you.

5 out of 5 stars I like this book so much; I keep giving my copy away. .......2007-08-29

There is no new knowledge in this book, and there was perhaps a little literary license taken with the historical vignettes; however if the overall objective was to communicate a series of points on how to take control of your life, then Andy succeeded.

The seven things that you need to do to change your life are: Take personal responsibility, Educate Yourself, Be a Person of Action, Make decisions and move forward, Choose Happiness, Forgive others, Persevere without exception.

I can't see any argument that any of these actions, done individually, will help you improve your life. We've all been told these or very similar things since before grade school.

Andy uses an old and quite effective teaching technique. He wraps the information in a story. And Andy is a great storyteller. So while there is no new information in this book, the information is presented in fresh and efficient manner.

I was given a gift about 12 months ago, the audio CDs of the Traveler's Gift, and have listened to them countless number of times since. I loved the story so much, I decided to purchase the book to compliment the audio CDs. The Traveler's Gift is profound and thought provoking. The messages are clear if you choose to see them. This story has changed, and continues to change, the way I see myself and my role in this world. If you're asking yourself 'why me?' then read this book.

I've been on a reading frenzy lately because I've been in a funk and needed to snap out of it. I had been allowing my mood to let circumstances stop my progress toward my dreams. Then I picked up this book my brother had highly recommended well over a year ago. I had bought it immediately on Amazon.com and then put it on my shelf. Last night I read it. Andy Andrews, thanks for the research on 7 great human beings. Thanks for taking the time to inspire me and I'm sure countless others. You did a great job of waking me up. The buck DOES stop here. No matter how dire our circumstances, we still have the choice of what to do right now, in the midst of it, and that decision will affect our future and the future of others. This book gives 7 secrets to living the life you always dreamed of but kept missing out on. We all have a purpose. Isn't it time we lived it and stopped letting other people and other things give us excuses for anything less than greatness?

Before David Ponder ever visited Truman in The Traveler's Gift, Michael Holder began his journey as the last young traveler to receive the unique gifts of wisdom offered by historical greats.

In his senior year of high school, Michael hits rock bottom.  Having been caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, he has now been suspended from the track team and lost his college scholarship. His coach is angry, his parents are disappointed, and he's diving headfirst into a downward spiral. Facing the bleak future ahead, he sees no way out and wonders if life is really worth living.  But with some divine intervention, he's given a second chance when he's offered a once-in-a-lifetime journey of discovery.

Rewritten to engage the minds of teens and tweens, The Young Traveler's Gift is sure to encourage and enlighten young men and women as they prepare to face the journeys that lie ahead.

The people in the book were like me because the kid was nearly my age. The story had some sad parts but a happy ending that made me feel good. I have already recommended the book to my friend at school who had already read The Traveler's Gift.

                                            Book Description

White Men Challenging Racism is a collection of first-person narratives chronicling the compelling experiences of thirty-five white men whose efforts to combat racism and fight for social justice are central to their lives. Based on interviews conducted by Cooper Thompson, Emmett Schaefer, and Harry Brod, these engaging oral histories tell the stories of the men’s antiracist work. While these men discuss their accomplishments with pride, they also talk about their mistakes and regrets, their shortcomings and strategic blunders. A foreword by James W. Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me, provides historical context, describing antiracist efforts undertaken by white men in America during past centuries.

Ranging in age from twenty-six to eighty-six, the men whose stories are presented here include some of the elder statesmen of antiracism work as well as members of the newest generation of activists. They come from across the United States—from Denver, Nashville, and San Jose; rural North Carolina, Detroit, and Seattle. Some are straight; some are gay. A few—such as historian Herbert Aptheker, singer/songwriter Si Kahn, Stetson Kennedy (a Klan infiltrator in the 1940s), and Richard Lapchick (active in organizing the sports community against apartheid)—are relatively well known; most are not. Among them are academics, ministers, police officers, firefighters, teachers, journalists, union leaders, and full-time community organizers. They work with Latinos and African-, Asian-, and Native-Americans. Many ground their work in spiritual commitments. Their inspiring personal narratives—whether about researching right-wing groups, organizing Central American immigrants, or serving as pastor of an interracial congregation—connect these men with one another and with their allies in the fight against racism in the United States.

All authors’ royalties go directly to fund antiracist work. To read excerpts from the book, please visit http://www.whitemenchallengingracism.com/

4 out of 5 stars More Missing American History.......2004-07-17

There are some truths too difficult to tell in a world of such diminished humanity, as is the case with American society. Yet, these men in their own inimical lonely way-with warts, flaws, inconsistencies and all--tell them anyway.

Yes, this is the rewriting of American history through the self-validating juxtaposition of selective cases. Yet it is no less American history--a kind of "missing American history," like so many other missing parts to American history. And in this sense, it is either a great deal more, or a lot less, than meets the eye.

What we do see here amidst raw, unvarnished, unalloyed truths is "living history" told by a handful of lost souls "paddling against a strong social current" in a veritable sea of orthodox evil called American culture. Theirs is an attempt to remain relevant by establishing "in place" a "counter hero system"-one in which the loss humanity of an entire nation can in some way be restored to a new level recognizable as normal by the rest of humanity. [These lonely white men then of course become super heroes in a much larger and more human system.]

What these "lost souls"--choosing to "opt" out of the much-flawed "white male American hero system" show--if only in relief--is their own futility and the utter futility of trying to "buck in place" an evil and corruptly based system.

Each man discovers in his own lonely but inevitable way that it can't be done; yet they persist as the sacrificial lambs they know themselves to be--because along the way there are truths to be told-and boy do they tell them:

--To be human, something has to feed the soul.

--Whiteness is an oppressive and expensive fiction that gives unearned privileges to some but does so at a very, very high price: by falsifying a much more complicated social reality and by robbing the society of its humanity.

--Racism is above being personal; it is deeply social.

--America is one big training camp for bigots.

--Racism, sexism, and homophobia do not a culture make.

--Poor white men are wounded, needy, powerless, and need to have their identities validated too. If they don't get it, they know how to act--even when they do not know how to "be".

--The world over, young disenfranchised men are the catalysts for raising hell because being male means knowing how to be raise hell.

These are just a just a few nuggets of a virtual book of undeniable but often, unseen truths. Yet there is so much more tragedy than hope in these little gems of this very heady tome:

--You cannot withdraw from a bankrupt, corrupt "evil system" even if you try, because it is in fact a "system" and therein lies the rub: within it there is no other platform on which to stand and counter the evil it propagates. You either become a part of the system or you become irrelevant.

--No one exits (or even coexists) within an evil system (even in one's own mind) without paying an unacceptable price-that is without being irreparable affected by its inconsistencies, its inhumanity and its corruption-in short without being consumed by it.

--In the end reality is just consensual perceptions--a very low standard upon which to build a life-affirming humanity.

Is the thought that we can get outside such a system mere denial at a much deeper (higher) level? Is it flawed thinking to imagine that a more human (less evil) "hero system" can be built "in place" inside an evil and already corrupt hero system? Is it just wishful thinking, to image that one's humanity can be restored by "pumping up" what remains of it in a bankrupt system? Do these 35 brave testimonies, by those who elect to live outside American social orthodoxy, have any meaning at all within it? Or is it like telling a Baptist why it is evil to be baptized? Or is this volume just more "liberal mind-massaging equally racist denial" cloaked in the perennial package of "doing good" for the community?

Read the book and draw your own conclusions. No matter what conclusions you draw, your conscience will be shaken. Four stars.

This is a nice story which can put you right on the couch next to him as you read. It's not all that unique a story though.

I like this book because it is a non-fiction book written by a good person who lead an eventful life. I have met Mr. Taulbert when he came to my school in 1996. he was a nice man then and he probably is a nice man now. I also liked THE LAST TRAIN NORTH; the sequel to When We Were Colored. I also liked the movie that was made from this book Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored.

It's pouring down rain outside and the house is empty except for the dog and myself. I grabbed this book and didn't stop until I closed the cover. Good passtime. The story is real and the people are personable. This is the kind of story that can take you back to the good ole days.

4 out of 5 stars Deeper than you think.......2002-04-27

This is a wonderful book. It is a storyteller's book: handcrafted by the teller to reflect HIS story.

I've read critical comments about the book and Taulbert himself that belittle either or both because they do not decry segregation or prejudice enough. Such commentators miss the major point. I don't see how anyone can read about young Taulbert and the injustices he suffered silently without being outraged and moved to change things. The Mississippi Delta apartheid was not a society Taulbert chose, but one in which he was raised. His story is about his life, not politics per se.

I recently heard Taulbert speak. He is as impressive in person as he is as a youngster in this book.

You will be richer for reading this book. I gave it 4-stars only because it is not intellectual on the surface and in that regard may not fulfill a certain challenge some of us expect in a book. Nonetheless, read this book. It is really a wonderful read that takes you to a past and a geographic spot not often visited.

Clifton Taulbert gives me hope and inspiration as writer -- his words are so carefully crafted, his view of the world is sincere and filled with an uplifting vision. His vivid description leads me to believe that even in the midst of the chaos and destruction we now inhabit, humanity may yet find a path to a better world. He is a truly inspiring writer; this is a truly inspiring book!

Humans have the amazing ability to make any experience mean whatever we want to us. Wether or not an experience is positive or negative, real or imagined, is almost irrelevant to how we perceive that experience. In the book "When We Were Colored", the author proves this assertion. Despite a plethora of dehumanizing situations and experiences, Clifton Taulbert still manages to paint his childhood as a beautiful succession of events teaching him how to reach his dreams and succeed. That his upbringing served him well and Mr. Taulbert succeeded is clear. However, what is not discussed, but is painfully evident, is the real reason for his success. Although Mr. Taulbert's childhood gave him the tools he needed to succeed in life, the main way that it did so was by instructing him in how to be a "good Negroe", also referred to as an "Uncle Tom."

                                                          Book Description

Douglas W. Ayres did "right and good" for his government employers by following hard lessons learned in his poverty stricken youth when dealing with men who never missed a meal. From fact-to-face conflicts with men like Gray Davis, currently Governor of California, to Jack Kent Cooke, owner of the NBA Lakers, he learned how to get things done the RIGHT way for citizens who never knew it.
He built parks, police protection, parking structures, public buildings, water systems, paramedic support, airports and other beneficial things in communities where the power structure wasn't sure they wanted those things.
To keep a superior group of employees from being fired enmasse for non-residency in the city limits he orchestrated an amendment to the constitution of the State of California.
It's all part of being a good city manager.
It's all here, in this series of unrelated anecdotes that spell one message: it takes work. Hard work. And smart work!

                                                          Book Description

This is the acclaimed biography of a giant of American journalism. As editor-publisher of the Chicago Tribune, Robert R. McCormick came to personify his city. Drawing on McCormick's personal papers and years of research, Richard Norton Smith has written the definitive life of the towering figure known as The Colonel.

3 out of 5 stars good history but the man remains a mystery.......2005-05-20

This is a lengthy book full of interesting historical material. But, as for the man himself, I never got the feeling that I was getting more than a sketch of him. Could any author do better? McM had more than his share of quirks and he didn't suffer fools, or anyone else, gladly, so perhaps there is no way anyone will ever get too deep into the mind of the man. The main thing I took away from the book is that Robert R. McCormick was a good businessman and the oddest duck of his time. The book is not a difficult read but, after reading it, the man remains a cipher. After a detailed accounting the war with FDR, the author seemed to rush to get to the end of RRM's life. Far from being a sympathetic character, pathetic more easily comes to mind. RRM had lots of power and plenty of money but he lived in a very cold world of his own that it appears no one during his life, or readers of this book today, can enter.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent biography of a fascinating man........1998-05-25

In this book, Richard Norton Smith does a first-rate job of recounting McCormick's life, going far in seperating the man from the public image that we have of him today. Balanced and judicious, it also makes for excellent reading, as Smith presents McCormick's life in an engaging manner. If there is a flaw in the book, it is in Smith's failure to adequately explain how the view of McCormick as a hidebound reactionary came to overshadow many aspects of his life, such as his early career as a progressive in local politics, or his legal campaigns in support of the First Amendment.
