Customer Reviews:
Packed with Knowledge!.......2004-03-02
This basic, solid book on global business takes nothing for granted. Author Ernest Gundling teaches by example and illustration, and has something approaching a horror of direct statement. At the end of each chapter, where a bolder writer might insert points to remember, he provides, instead, lists of questions to consider. This book will tell you the skills you need and will make you very aware of your deficits, but it will not tell you precisely how to develop those skills. Gundling does provide a wealth of little, fictitious anecdotes about people who have done the right or wrong thing in global business. In a refreshingly humble approach, he sometimes uses his own blunders as examples of what not to do. We recommend his book, which brings to mind that Socrates was judged the wisest of men because he knew he knew nothing. Readers will come a few steps closer to such Socratic enlightenment. What you may not know about conducting yourself in international business would fill a book - this one.
STERN'S MANAGEMENT REVIEW FINDS THIS BOOK TOP-NOTCH!.......2003-07-09
This book clarifies common pitfalls in interacting with foreign counterparts and offers solutions structured around twelve people skills: establishing credibility; giving and receiving feedback; obtaining information; evaluating people; building global teamwork; training and development; selling; negotiating; strategic planning; transferring knowledge; innovating; and managing change. The book is based on inputs from experienced country and regional experts. It includes numerous examples, charts, tables and appendixes, as well as chapter summaries and review questions. A top-notch book, bountiful in substance, it will help you build bridges over cultural divides.
Take Notice: Global organizational development practitioners.......2003-05-23
Working Globe Smart is the first book I have read where cross cultural principles are pragmatically integrated into organizational and leadership development frameworks. The context is accessible, well organized and engaging. I highly recommend this book to the global OD practitioner.

Book Description
Peer Instruction for Astronomy is an instructor's guide to an exciting and easily-implemented enhancement for lecture classes in introductory astronomy. Application of this powerful and efficient teaching technique requires that the instructor have on hand a large number of thought-provoking, conceptual short answer questions aimed at a variety of levels. While significant numbers of such questions have been published for use in Physics, Peer Instruction for Astronomy provides the first such compilation for Astronomy, and includes hints on use of the technique and applications of the method. Covers peer instruction, incentives, a large database of conceptual questions for use in class, and a list of readings and resources. Ideal for introductory astronomy intructors at the undergraduate or advanced high school level.
Customer Reviews:
THE perfect companion to any astronomy textbook.......2006-11-28
If you buy only one teaching book, this should be the one. Whether you are teaching at the high school or college level, Peer Instruction for Astronomy will enliven your class and help your students learn.
Paul Green has made it very easy for astronomy instructors to improve interactive learning in lectures with little upfront work. The introductory chapters of the text are informative and persuasive. Most importantly they represent conventional wisdom from the physics and astronomy educational research communities in a language accessible to all. Paul has done the hard work of cobbling together an extensive collection of well-written concept-tests that will spark engagement and understanding in even the most reluctant learner. Use this book and method, and everyone involved in your course will be happier and better educated in the end. It's that simple.
Collection of Astronomy Concept Tests.......2005-07-04
A semi-sequel to Mazur's Peer Instruction: A User's Manual, Green follows Mazur's lead in exhorting intro Astronomy teachers, rather than intro Physics teachers to adopt peer instruction through concept tests as a means of actively engaging students in what has traditionally been a large lecture format class. As Mazur does in his text, Green spends the first 30 pages making the case for cooperative learning in general and peer instruction via concept tests in particular, as well as describing how concept tests can be implimented in the typical large lecture-hall, undergrad intro-astro classroom.
Concept tests are multiple choice questions intended to be given shortly after a topic has been covered in a traditional lecture. Small groups of students (usually pairs) try to persuade each other of the correctness of their answer before their final answer is submitted to the instructor.
The bulk of the book is found in the fifth chapter which consists of over 400 concept test questions. The cover such topics as:
The Night Sky, The Celestial Sphere
Seasons, Time, Eclipses
Measures & Units, Distance, Magnitude
Astronomical Methods, Telescopes
History
Orbital Motion, Forces and Acceleration
scale
elements
Radiation and the EM spectrum
The Earth, Moon, Planets, Asteroids, Comets
The Sun, Stelar Properties, Star Formation, Stellar Evolution
Binary Stars, Stellar Populations
Galaxies, Quasars
Cosmology, Dark Matter, the Origin & Evolution of Life
Also included is a diagnostic test of initial astronomical knowledge akin to the FCI. Both this and the questions are included on a CD in both MSword & pdf format. The questions in general are appropriate both for college and the high school level, though you'll likely have to alter and drop some to adapt it to your own course.

This thorough introduction to the world of paleontology has been completely revised and updated, reflecting changes in the ways that fossils are viewed and interpreted. Using the fluid writing style that made Trilobite! Eyewitness to Evolution such a success, Dr. Fortey brings the study of fossils into the twenty-first century.

Prizes from paleontology.......2003-11-02
Fossils retain a mystique unmatched by most other natural wonders. They provide a window into the deep past and a hint of life's immense variety. Richard Fortey, whose reputation is built on a long career studying trilobite fossils, provides a richly illustrated summary of the prizes of paleontology. Carefully written to show the science behind fossil hunting, he avidly encourages amateurs with this book also. He explains how fossils were the key element in establishing the science of geology by William Smith. In later years they would be the buttress supporting Darwin's idea of evolution by natural selection. In the 20th Century these silent witnesses would provide the finishing touches on the concept of plate tectonics.
Fortey has arranged this book well, with different animal and plant fossils and images carefully categorised, described and imaged. He guides the novice through the process of recognizing and retrieving fossils from the various rock types. Shales, as the product of shallow seas are likely rocks for many fossils allow easy retrieval. However, Fortey notes the specimen will likely be shattered through geologic processes. Limestone, on the other hand, hides its treasures well, but lucky finds may be dazzling in completeness or detail. He explains the necessity of careful record location and condition of finds. After all, careful records led to the understanding that western and eastern Newfoundland began their continental careers far apart. Millions of years ago, eastern Newfoundland was far across the equator near the South Pole. Fossil records traced its movement until it merged with the western side some time later.
Fortey's book is stunningly illustrated, well worth the price for that aspect alone. Large, clear photographs, line drawings and maps support his animated writing style. His enthusiasm for his science sparkles every page. You become anxious to join his next expedition or set out on your own at the first opportunity. His warnings about seaside drenchings, icy winds or smashed fingernails seem inconsequential compared to the possibility of obtaining one of nature's true treasures. Gemstones seem dull and faded next to an object that once lived on a sea bottom or ancient prairie. His final chapters on finding and preparing fossils are a welcome addition. With the dual purpose of presenting beauty with education, this book is of value to anyone wishing to learn about the life of the past.

Book Description
My Science Thesis is the beginning of a trilogy. And it really is a trilogy. Because it is in two parts. And it only takes one part to complete it. It is the rosetta stone on physics. The answers are contained in the book. It is just a matter of working out the code. And if was a rosetta stone there would people spending time working out the code. But really it is a prophesy about 666. And that is a code. So it a rosetta stone for the numerical code in the bible. And that code does speak about modern physics. And that is a claim that will make no sense to you. Because you are not a physicist. And if you were you wouldn't believe it. That's why it takes an expert. To make up his mind that he wants to believe. That God has exalted His word above His name. "Not another Einstein. Not another Newton. But another Galileo. " -Daily Blat.
Book Description
Deborah Eisenberg is nearly unmatched in her mastery of the short-story form. Now, in her newest collection, she demonstrates once again her virtuosic abilities in precisely distilled, perfectly shaped studies of human connection and disconnection. From a group of friends whose luck in acquiring a luxurious Manhattan sublet turns to disaster as their balcony becomes a front-row seat to the catastrophe of 9/11, to the too painful love of a brother for his schizophrenic sister, Eisenberg brilliantly "illustrates the lives of people rubbed raw by what the fates have sent them" (Vanity Fair).
Customer Reviews:
much ado about....?.......2007-04-04
I stopped reading after the first two stories. Intriguing ideas for a short story collection, and great cover, but poorly executed. The writing is not engaging - at times convoluded and cofusing - and no real connection with the characaters or their plights. The dialogue seemed contrived, and I found myself thinking that people don't really speak the way characters did in this book. Granted, I only made it through 88 pages, but I was comfortable in using that as a prediction for the rest. I'm with a lot of other reviewers here - I don't quite understand all the praise/awards for this work.
Now, for much more engaging and genius short story writing, check out KELLY LINK. Especially MAGIC FOR BEGINNERS. Nearly perfect. Also, MOTHERS AND OTHER MONSTERS, by Maureen F. McHugh. What short stories should be.
I'll be selling Twilight back to my bookseller. I wonder if the author would be more engaging with essay writing?
Wouldn't be on my Best of 2006 list.......2007-02-15
I borrowed this from the library after a reviewer in The Boston Globe said it was one of the best books of 2006. I read the first story and didn't like it, but I tried to soldier on. Halfway through the second story, I gave up, completely bored. Don't judge this book by its cover, as the cover is brilliant, and the inside quickly disappoints.
Post-9/11ist stories about lostness and aloneness.......2007-01-22
With "Twighlight of the Superheroes," Deborah Eisenburg is throwing another log onto the early but incipient literary bonfire of "Post-9/11ism." Indeed, these stories are a testament to Post-9/11ism's leading attributes: expectation of imminent doom, the globe as a child that has lost its innocence, the theory that, contrary to the trend prevalent throughout most of history, the teenagers, 20- and 30-somethings of today will be the first generation to live less happily than their parents, as well as the feeling that our world, through its fast-paced ambition and utter forwardness, has made tragic mistakes for which our children and grandchildren will pay.
The title story, of course, says this the best. And as a 17-year-old who expects to reside one day in no place other than a city like New York, I finished it with tears in my eyes. Not because the story was dark, or polemic-sounding, which it was, but because, counter to those strides, there is empathy for the characters, and an underlying, godless faith that we as people will survive, continue to wake up in the morning and live the lives we make for ourselves. The world in which this story was written is not the world that existed ten years ago. This is a time of monumental change, and I welcome the recent movement of Post-9/11ism with open arms.
Random, hard to follow.......2007-01-04
This book was not easy to read. In fact I only read the first 36 pages trying to follow the story. It was like reading random thoughts of mumbo jumbo. The cover was cute and the author sounded interesting. I just didn't get it....
Eisenberg: a short-story superhero........2006-12-16
Deborah Eisenberg lives in New York City and teaches at the University of Virginia. It is not surprising that she is the winner of the Rea Award for the Short Story. The half dozen stories collected in the TWILIGHT OF THE SUPERHEROES (Eisenberg's seventh collection) demonstrate her remarkable talent for creating unpredictable narratives and characters that are complicated, difficult, and dysfunctional. The title story, for instance, involves a group of twentysomething friends, whose luck in acquiring a Manhattan loft turns to sudden disaster as their balcony becomes a front-row seat to the catastrophe of 9/11; "Some Other, Better Otto," reveals the painful love of an irascible lawyer for his mentally ill sister, Sharon; in "The Flaw in the Design," a diplomat's wife frets over her son's increasingly bizarre political rants, as she falls into an affair hoping to discover "a music box life." Eisenberg's memorable stories resonate with intelligence, humor, and angst.

A fast but not really filling read........2003-10-30
Richard B Russell Democrat from Winder Georgia, was an extremely skilled parlimentarian and executive. However he was easy prey for Lyndon Johnson who gave him the shad treatment. In looking at this man's life he accomplished many things but in the end was lacking in 3 things. The courage to step up and lead the Senate and bend it to his will on agricultural and defense issues and an inability to see beyond his roots and their limiting factors he could of broken the mold and become President if he realized that geography and socioeconomic factors would inflict a defacto segragation on America and that once they were done with the Civil rights struggle the north would lose much of it's passion for social reform and change and the nation would be generally like it always was with blacks in the end vanishing into the mostly white Hispanic race. The third thing that I found him lacking in was honor he was but a Lyndon Johnson stepping stone and no Samuel T Rayburn.
One Of The Greatest Senators To NEVER Be President.......1999-12-30
Henry Clay. Daniel Webster. John C. Calhoun. James F. Byrnes. Robert A. Taft. Hubert Humphrey. Add Richard Russell to this list and what do you get? A collection of our nation's most accomplished and able Senators who never became President. All of these men were giants in their time, and Russell was no exception. The youngest Governor in Georgia history, Russell came to Washington as a Senator in 1933 and left in the early 70's, feet first. A legislator of uncommon ability, Russell was a master of the procedures, traditions, and customs of the Senate; of parliamentary tactics; and was constructive on all matters of domestic or foreign policy. His peers referred to him as a 'Senator's Senator', Presidents called him a 'President's Senator'. His hold over Georgia's political and business establishments enabled him to seek reelection every six years unopposed. Unfortunately, his refusal to change his political position or personal attitudes on the issue of civil rights doomed him to be a 'regional Senator' rather than a 'national' one. He sought the Democratic Party's presidential nomination in 1952, but won only the delegates from the states of the Confederacy. Despite the increasing liberalism of his party, Russell the conservative, voted the straight Democratic ticket in every election. Russell was perhaps truly the last great statesman of the Senate.
Story, yes; insight, no........1999-07-29
This book is a straightforward account of the life of one of the 20th century's five most important U.S. senators. However, it falls short in examining Russell's ideology, which is tied to his time and place when it is ever mentioned. A fully satisfactory biography will have to explore the man behind the rise of Lyndon Johnson, the coordinated southern resistance to integration, and much of Senate anti-Communism from an intellectual point of view.

Book Description
Is it possible to describe the confusion and shame I felt every time daddy came to my bedroom and used me to fulfill his sexual perversion? Is it possible to describe the fear that consumed me when I thought I was pregnant with my dad's baby? His Special Little Girl is a heart-on-your-sleeve memoir about growing up in an abusive home with five siblings, an alcoholic father, and a courageous motherabout desperate attempts to cope with impossible painabout surviving the devastation of incest and the rejection of divorceabout God's forgiveness and healing. Jody bares her soul as she takes you on an inconceivable journey that includes graphic scenes of her abuse, honest exposure of her own sin, paralyzing anguish, and sorrow she endures as an adult, and her raw emotions as she deals with her dad's prison sentence and death. You will weep as you read about the heartbreaking encounters and effects of this hideous crime, and then you will rejoice as you experience the forgiveness, love, and support that this family had for their dad and each other.
Customer Reviews:
her book is a loving gift to others.......2004-07-13
How sad for this family what the author describes here, but how very healing for the reader. Rarely does the adult child of incest, because of the statute of limitations, get to see her abuser go to jail. The fact that her father continued to molest children both in and out of the home, and his subsequent arrest, was the catalyst for the opening up of wounds from the author's childhood and her having to reveal to her siblings what their father did to her when she was growing up. This forced all 6 of the adult kids to confront the terrible and ugly truth about a father they both feared and adored and set the whole family each on their own path to healing.
Rather than being an incredibly well-written story, it is more a documentation of the facts from childhood to adulthood, but this does not take away from the story of her family's attempts at healing in order to come to terms with their difficult childhoods. Indeed, one of the most powerful parts of book are the many letters and testimonials from the author's siblings that is included at the end of her story. What the author wants to share with others is what happened to her and how she and her family coped and are healing. This she does beautifully. And what a loving thing to expose her own pain so that others may find healing in this book. Thank you for your gift Ms. Rutherford.
His Special Little Girl.......2003-10-08
Jody Rutherfords book, "His Special Little Girl" was riveting! It drove home the aweful realization that incest in Christian Homes is a continueing tragedy. The book is full of the horror, disappointment and hurt long associated with the terrific crime of incest. Jody's candor will sicken you and then her belief in God, and the hope of the future will inspire you. The book took me to the lows and captured this aweful pain and dispair surrounding the authors life. Ms. Rutherford then reaches for the future and it's hope.
I cryed, laughed and rejoiced with the author. Ms. Rutherford put me in the middle of the scene, I felt as if I was there.
This is most certainly the most complete book written by an incest victim that I have ever read. Read in one setting. I simply couldn't put it down.
Anyone who has been a victim, knows a victim or wishes to gain powerful insight into the subject of incest needs to read this book and use it as a tremendous resorce.
Once you begin to read it you won't put it down.
