Book Description
This textbook for graduate students and advanced undergraduates in physics and physical chemistry covers the major areas of statistical mechanics and concludes with a demonstration of applications of statistical mechanics at the level of current research. The presentation begins with the fundamental ideas of averages and ensembles, focusing on classical systems described by continuous variables such as position and momentum, and using the ideal gas as an example. It then turns to quantum systems, beginning with diatomic molecules and working up through blackbody radiation and chemical equilibria. The discussion of equilibrium properties of systems of interacting particles includes presents such techniques as cluster expansions and distribution functions and uses non-ideal gases, liquids, and solutions as examples. Dynamic behavior - treated more extensively than in other texts - is discussed from the point of view of correlation functions. The text concludes with a problem of current research, namely diffusion in a suspension of interacting hard spheres and what can be learned about such a system from scattered light. Intended for a one-semester course, the text includes several "asides" on topics that are usually omitted from introductory courses, as well as numerous problems at the ends of chapters.
Customer Reviews:
good intro book.......2005-03-02
i found this to be a really good intro to the subject. the chapters ( lectures) are clear and make the material, which is difficult very accesable. there are problems at the end of each chapter, about half of which have answers which makes it possible for the student to check his or her work. I took this course with little physics background ( my undergrad degree was in computer engineering) and found this book to be really helpful in understanding the material
A fresh book on the subject..........2004-01-25
Chapter one, contains some advice from the author that students should already know, but nobody has probably explicitly mentioned: "[Y]ou are unlikely to be a real academic success if you limit yourself to a single book." With this in mind, this book does very well. I find that reading a number of books in parallel helps getting to grips with a subject - and this is where I find that the author does well.
He takes the time to present existing material in new and creative ways. This is a godsend if you're stuck on something - because finding that all of the books you're reading make the same assumption, at the same point, is really frustrating.
Phillies also points out that sometimes there are a number of possible ways of presenting the material. For example, in Chapter 3 (a discussion, I find particularly enjoyable) he mentions that either the micro-canonical ensemble, or the canonical ensemble have been used as starting points. He discusses the consequences of the choice with some detail (and fervour). I find this sort of meta-level discussion very useful for mentally organising this material, something which other authors just don't do. Plus, if you're using other books - some of them will attempt to cover more content initially - then the perspective this book provides is useful. The gradual build of this book, with short lectures instead of chapter presentation, is also assistive.
So, maybe you've tried some other books on stat. mech, and lost interest? Or missed the plot along the way? Perhaps you should supplement them with this book.

Book Description
This book brings together international experts to examine interactions between the biology of wildlife and the divergent goals of people involved in hunting, fishing, gathering, and culling wildlife. Reviews of theory show how sustainable exploitation is tied to the study of population dynamics, with direct links to reproductive rates, life histories, behavior, and ecology. As such theory is rarely put into practice to achieve sustainable use and effective conservation, Conservation of Exploited Species explores the many reasons for this failure and considers remedies to tackle them.

The Gospel according to Monsiváis.......2000-04-30

In the sixties, David Mixner became an activist in the civil rights and anti-war movements, then emerged in the seventies as an influential Washington insider. Unknown to his comrades, he was also a closet homosexual, so scared of exposure he let hardly anyone know his secret. With good reason: when he came out in 1977 he lost a lot of his political clout. Undeterred he marched on a new crusade--gay liberation. He returned to national prominence as a political activist when he led a hugely successful drive in the gay community to elect his long-time friend Bill Clinton. That relationship, which has been bittersweet through Clinton's presidency, is one of the fascinating sidelights in this memoir of a radical life.
Book Description
"From my fear of coming out to coming on strong in the struggle for human rights, this is my American journey, the story of an outsider on the inside, a gay man proudly committed to a life of standing up for freedom.
"President Clinton and I were born three days apart. We had both dreamed of serving our country. There was one difference: He could pursue his dream, while I felt I could not. The President was born straight and I was born gay."
In this stirring personal history, one of America's most influential gay rights advocates recounts his extraordinary career as a policy maker and adviser to the major political leaders of our time, and his own often anguishing, ultimately triumphant life as a gay man. A longtime personal friend of Bill Clinton, in Stranger Among Friends David Mixner offers an insider's look at the power struggles that occur every day in our nation's capital and candid insights on the Clinton administration's successes and failures. Spanning three decades of human rights activism--from the behind-the-scenes negotiations to the painful betrayals to the hard-won victories--his forthright story unflinchingly explores what it means to be an outsider on the inside, and sends a message of hope to all who have ever stood up for what they believe.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating.......2006-04-23
In this day of the modern Gay Rights Movement, no biography captures the true story of someone moderately simple, becoming the voice of a fantastic mission with true, heartfelt passion for the equality of gays and lesbians. Full of pathos, life lessons, screw-ups, ironies and inspiration that truly reflects the dichotomy of living as an evolving gay man during the sexual revolution, Reagan-Era AIDS, and the Clinton Era of Inclusion against the backdrop of a hidden sex life. I was glad to know this story!
I really enjoyed and would reccomend this book.......2003-07-29
I must say, this was one of the best books I've read in a while. It was just fascinating. It starts out describing David's childhood, goes onto his time in college, his antiwar activism, his many struggles with his homosexuality, finally with his coming out and becoming a gay activist, and then to his time spent working on the Clinton campaign all the way up to Clinton's innaguration. It's a very readable book, it draws you in from the first few pages and really keeps you wanting to know what will happen next in David's very exciting activist life. Another thing that kept me reading was I was dying to find out when he would finally come out. It is easy to relate to David's pain and I was inspired to see what he did with that pain and to read about the many remarkable things he has done with this life. I finished this book in a little over a week and wished there was more. I loved learning more about the political and activist worlds while at the same time learning about him. If you have any interest in politics, activism, AIDS, or gay and lesbian issues, or just like a good memoir, read this book. You'll like it :)
good book kinda of long.......2002-06-28
it was a good book for the most part but it kinda of ran on and on i still have a copy of it around some where
A timelessly inspirational, extraordinary life.......1999-09-25
I have always admired David's courage and dedication to his causes. I recently re-read this book and found it to be just as inspirational now as it was in 1996. It gives a deep sense of perspective to the political movements of the '60s and '70 that is just fascinating. It then paints a spellbinding portrait of the Gay Rights Movement. Most important, however, "Stranger" is a Profile in Courage of an extraordinary man who has helped all Americans who pursue "Liberty and Justice for ALL. I re-read "Stranger Among Friends" as I was completing my most recent book "Pathways to Inner Peace" and it gave me just what I was looking for -- a dose of courage to continue helping others. (Rev. Jim Webb, author of "Pathways to Inner Peace").
Worth Reading.......1997-03-26
A very interesting account of a political activist who staked his hopes on the Clinton presidency to write the executive order permitting gays in the military. He was instrumental in organizing the gay community
in support of the Clinton campaign. Intertwined in the political activism is Mixner's account of his own homophobia and his difficult times in coming to terms with his sexual orientation. A long time friend of Clinton, Mixner belived he would keep his promise to overturn the ban on gays in the military. The rest is history, including their former
rather close relationship.

Book Description
Some cities, through hardship or glory or a combination of both, produce extraordinary women. Richmond in the early twentieth century, dominated by its prominent families and still haunted by the ghosts of its Confederate past, produced a galaxy of such characters, including Ellen Glasgow, Mary Cooke Branch Munford, and Lila Meade Valentine. Elisabeth Scott Bocock, Victorian in values but modern in outlook, carried on this tradition with her unique combination of family wealth and connections, boundless energy, eccentricity, and visionary zeal. Her daughter Mary Buford Hitz's candid memoir reveals the pleasures and frustrations of growing up with a woman who expected so much from her children and from the city whose self-appointed guardian she became.
Elisabeth Bocock's vision was of a city that would take historic preservation seriously, of a society that would accept the importance of conservation. Impatient with process and society's conventions, she used her enormous personal magnetism to circumvent them when founding many of the institutions Richmond takes for granted today. In the creation of the Historic Richmond Foundation, the Carriage Museum at Maymont, the Hand Workshop, and the Virginia Chapter of the Nature Conservancy she played the dual roles of visionary and bulldozer. While part of a tradition of strong southern women, Elisabeth Bocock's tactics were unique, as she sought to convince others of both the practical and aesthetic links between preservation and the environment.
One of the "five little Scotts," children of the founder of the investment firm Scott & Stringfellow, she grew up with great privilege, and she schooled her children in how to take advantage of such privilege and how to ignore it. Whether in their winter residence at 909 West Franklin Street in Richmond or at their summer home, Royal Orchard, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, in her household she insisted both on achievement and on avoiding boredom at all costs.
As Mary Buford Hitz recounts with intelligence and feeling, her mother often seemed like a natural force, leveling anything that stood in its way but leaving in its wake a brighter, changed world. Never Ask Permission is not only a daughter's honest portrait of a charismatic and difficult woman who broke the threads of convention; in Elisabeth Scott Bocock we recognize the flawed but feisty, enduring character of Richmond.
Customer Reviews:
Getting To Know Virginia.......2002-04-18
I bought and read this book in preparation for moving from San Diego to Norfolk...I wanted to get a flavor of the area. What a pleasant surprise! A fascinating read and one that will make you want to visit the area to see where ESB lived, and where she had such influence in preserving historical Richmond.
An Eccentric CEO.......2000-12-31
Knowing a bona fide eccentric, especially a benevolent one, is simultaneously an entertaining and exasperating experience. Sharing that experience with others is usually daunting. Either the essence of the person being described becomes lost in a jumble of amusing but disjointed anecdotes or eccentricity overwhelms the eccentric, rendering a flat, one-dimensional cartoon in place of a complex, multi-faceted portrait.
In Never Ask Permission, Mary Buford Hitz tackles this daunting task head on, the subject of this memoir being her mother, Elizabeth Scott Bocock or, as she often signed herself, ESB. Rather than take a sequential, "I-am-born" approach, the author chooses to devote separate chapters to different aspects of her mother's personality, each chapter a self-contained essay, overflowing with anecdotes, quotes, and, perhaps most illuminating of all, snippets of ESB's autobiographical sketches. (Most of these autobiographical excerpts, by the way, come from essays ESB wrote during her college years, which began after her sixty-seventh birthday.) Just as a puzzle becomes a picture as each piece falls into place, so does ESB's complex character come into focus, chapter by chapter, with a poignant, but essential clue to this charming, but undeniably complex Virginian saved until the very end.
Many CEO's could learn from ESB's capacity to set goals and achieve them. As ESB emerges from the pages of this lovingly crafted book, the reader meets a determined and creative thinker who probably would not have been impressed with "left-brain/right-brain, lateral thinking, creative problem-solving, if you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem" lingo, but who embodied the positive persona such jargon seeks to describe. With one foot firmly planted in late Victorian America and the other constantly, restlessly forcing her into the future, she was a visionary with an astonishing ability to get things done.
If you enjoy biography, if you are fascinated by Virginia, if you want some side-splitting laughs, or if you are just interested in a good read, this is the book for you.
What a Goose Chase!.......2000-12-02
If the moral of Never ask permission lies in the title, I will jump to the front of the line to praise it. The narrative careens around corners and bounces over bumps so merrily that the reader has only fleeting moments to enjoy the insiights and hoot at the comedy while holding on tightly to that pale yellow tailgate.
A delightful tug on the heartstrings.......2000-11-26
Mary Buford Hitz has done a remarkable job of portraying a very special person in a very special place during a very special time - the middle to late years of the twentieth century. Elisabeth Scott Bocock was a mover and shaker in Richmond, Virginia, the person who did more than anyone else to see that the city became aware of the importance of preserving its antiquities. She was one of a kind. Her daughter has written a family memoir that touches all the joys and sorrows that all families know and many delightful eccentric experiences that only her family knew. As a sensitive but un-self-conscious exploration of the mother-daughter relationship, this book cannot be beat. Mary Buford Hitz is perceptive about herself, her family, life and the world. In describing her remarkable mother, she also describes herself. Beyond that, she puts her finger on the changing mores of the twentieth century and paints a marvellous picture of her mother, a whirlwind catalyst who left no one she touched unchanged. Auntie Mame pales beside Elisabeth Bocock. This is a well-written, absorbing, wonderful chronicle - ostensibly of one woman's odyssey, but at the same time it touches on every one's odyssey.

Theodore Roosevelt, As He Presented Himself.......2007-03-17
"The Essential Theodore Roosevelt" brings together twenty-four of TR's most significant writings and speeches. The selections give the reader a valuable insight into TR's nature writings and policy positions. His words on hyphenated Americans, trusts, Cuban, Panamanian and Philippine policies, organized labor, stay at home moms, conservation, muckrakers, lynchings and a host of other issues are all laid out in this book. Of particular interest are his speeches at Osawatomie, Kansas and to the National Convention of the Progressive Party, which lay out his vision of the Progressive Party. The speech he gave after being shot commands summons the scene to the reader's mind's eye.
As followers of my [...] reviews are aware, I have read extensively on Theodore Roosevelt. This book is an essential part of any study of TR. Other writers give their impressions of TR. This one presents TR as he presented himself to the public.
