In some respects, a top-level college coach is a lot like a manager in any business. He has to turn a group of talented individuals into a smoothly running team, and he has to produce results that please the fans of his team--the shareholders of the athletic program. Thus, in Leading with the Heart, Krzyzewski reviews the lessons he's learned as basketball coach at Duke University, and tries to universalize them so they translate to any leadership position. For example, he writes, "Adjustments are not unusual, they are usual. So a leader's ability to think on his feet ... to do things without instruction ... is of paramount importance." Makes sense, as does this admonition: "When teaching, always remember this simple phrase: 'You hear, you forget. You see, you remember. You do, you understand.'"
The book has four sections--"Preseason," "Regular Season," "Postseason," and "All-Season"--and each of those has four chapters. Each chapter begins with three quotes ("Too many rules get in the way of leadership" leads off chapter 1), and ends with bulleted tips summing up the chapter's message. Between the quotes and the bullet points are anecdotes about Duke basketball games and (occasionally) Krzyzewski's life outside basketball. What you come away with is an understanding of why Krzyzewski is a great basketball coach, why former Duke assistants such as Tommy Amaker and Quin Snyder are probably going to become great basketball coaches, and how anyone who's currently a coach can become a better coach. It would be great if other types of managers in other types of businesses could incorporate these lessons in compassionate, focused, highly flexible leadership, but it seems unlikely. Most managers in business rise through the ranks not because of their ability to lead or inspire but because of their knowledge and competence (if not their connections). On the other hand, it would be nice if each of us, just once, could work for someone like Coach K, someone who could push the right buttons and lead us to our own version of the Final Four. Not likely, but a pretty sweet fantasy. --Lou Schuler

THE BIBLE OF MOTIVATIONAL BOOKS & INTEGRITY: COACH "K" PROVES IT BY LIVING IT. SUPERBLY INSPIRING!.......2007-10-03
I read coach K's book when it first came out and recently re-read it. I often refer to it when I need to put things in the correct perspective. This inspirational book makes it easy to "take responsibility for yourself, and never let "it's not my job," enter into your mind. Coach "K" exemplifies "getting the job done/taking charge." Many a time I'm wondering what to do in tough situations, both in sports and business. I truly ask myself a lot: "What would a guy like coach Krzyzewski do?" I can't think of any coach who exemplifies more decency, integrity, honesty, perseverence, dedication, fairness, family values...you get the point. It appears there are many who admire him and, some will envy him. I say learn from him because he's proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, what leading with integrity and values is all about. Many, many, parent's say they want their kids to go to Duke. Why? These parents are specific to say that they hope their children can be part of the positive and integral influnce that "coach Krzyzewski brings to Duke." Major companies have used coach "K"s book to help executives get on the right track. You won't read a better book on motivation for anything in life. Amazing book, about an amazing person. Worth it!!!
Phenomenal leadership book.......2007-09-24
I have read this book and reviewed my notes several times and everytime I gain something new from it. Fantastic book on leadership and thought process of building a team that will excel.
THE worst book I have read by any coach.......2007-08-23
I am a professional College Coach. I have read Coach K's book and I found it to be the worst book I have ever read. The book repeats itself over and over again. Almost like he doesn't have anything really to say so he filled the book with filler. Nothing in the book made me go wow. Nothing was new to the coaching or leading world. Save your money and get a real book on Leadership.
I do not know one Coach in the NCAA world that has not read this book. And I can say that the majority of people agree with me. The ones that don't are just big Coach K or Duke fans.
I am not a UCLA fan in anyway. But I found that John Wooden's book to be more thoughtful and helpful.
Skip this book and find books on Leadership in the business world. Coach K is a great coach, but he can't write a book. And lets be honest it is not hard to coach the 10 best College players like Duke has. It is harder to coach the 10 worst. And that is what we all are looking to get advice from.
Unless you are a B-Ball fan..........2007-07-05
Skip it. Or check it out at the library. I found this book to be so-so. Not any advice you haven't heard before, and too much reminiscing about Duke's good old days.
Thanks for writing this book Coach!.......2007-05-11
I liked this so much I ordered Coach K's Beyond Basketball. What a gift.

Book Description
Dealing with Uncertainties proposes and explains a new approach for the analysis of uncertainties. Firstly, it is shown that uncertainties are the consequence of modern science rather than of measurements. Secondly, it stresses the importance of the deductive approach to uncertainties. This perspective has the potential of dealing with the uncertainty of a single data point and of data of a set having differing weights. Both cases cannot be dealt with the inductive approach, which is usually taken. This innovative monograph also fully covers both uncorrelated and correlated uncertainties. The weakness of using statistical weights in regression analysis is discussed. Abundant examples are given for correlation in and between data sets and for the feedback of uncertainties on experiment design.

Book Description
Ever wonder what men really do on their fishing trips? I mean really wonder? Well, here it is - laid out for all the world to see in these twenty-three stories - lived and collected over our forty years' of heading north of the border on our annual fishing trips to beautiful Crotch Lake, Ontario.
Crotch Lake? Yep! That's the name and there really is such a place! Romantic isn't it? And it is on the map, but you'll have to read on to learn more about the lake and it's intriguing name.
The stories in the book are all true...well, they're true for the most part...except where I decided to make stuff up or my memories have been dimmed by the dual fogs of alcohol and....(I can't for the life of me remember what the other fog is. Sorry.)
Except in several instances, the names have been scrupulously maintained to identify the culprits and to preserve for all posterity the perversity of their genius, the magnitude of their gullibility, or their otherwise inane or inadvertent contributions to the merriment that has always characterized our annual fishing, philosophy, and survey-of-the-state-of-Canadian-brewing-and-distilling- arts expeditions.

O.K. Louie's you got that right! Crotch Lake you got that right too! BUT when it comes to water temperature, you're an American.

Book Description
The attack on Pearl Harbor is a topic of perennial interest to the American public, and a long line of popular books and movies have focused on the attack or events leading up to it. This work takes an entirely new perspective. Aimed at the general reader with an interest in World War II and the U.S. Navy, the book looks at the massive salvage effort that followed the attack, beginning with the damage control efforts aboard the sinking and damaged ships in the harbor on 7 December 1941 and ending in March 1944 when salvage efforts on the USS Utah were finally abandoned.
The author tells the story in a narrative style, moving from activity to activity as the days and months wore on, in what proved to be an incredibly difficult and complex endeavor. But rather than writing a dry operational report, Dan Madsen describes the Navy's dramatic race to clear the harbor and repair as many ships as possible so they could return to the fleet ready for war. Numerous photographs, many never before published in books for the general public, give readers a real appreciation for the momentous task involved, from the raising of the USS Oglala in 1942 and the USS Oklahoma in 1943 to the eventual dismantling of the above-water portions of the USS Arizona. Madsen explains how a salvage organization was first set up, how priorities were scheduled, what specific plans were made and how they worked or, in many cases, did not work. His book is based almost entirely on primary sources, including the records of the fleet salvage unit and the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. 264 PAGES. 90 photographs. 11 line drawings. Appendixes. Notes. Bibliography. Index. Hardcover. 7 x 10 inches.
Customer Reviews:
What do you do in the aftermath of such a mess?.......2007-08-14
Anyone who has read or watched accounts of the history of World War II knows the basic facts concerning the attack on Pearl Harbor. We know about the casualties, the damaged fleet and the destruction of the base infrastructure. We also know that later during the war Pearl Harbor was an active and vital naval base. The damage was not catastrophic and permanent. What I had not appreciated until visiting Pearl as a tourist, was that most of the damaged ships were repaired and returned to the fight. The images of the aftermath appeared so grim that one wondered how the Navy recovered from the attack? How did they salvage the damaged ships? How did they return the base to operation? How long did it take? What techniques were employed? These questions are the subject of Daniel Madsen's book, "Resurrection: Salvaging the Battle Fleet at Pearl Harbor." With a narrative based on primary historical documents, and illustrated with dozens of photographs, many never before published, Madsen presents a compelling account of the recovery effort, which I found to greatly enrich my understanding of the full Pearl Harbor story.
Madsen describes the efforts in the hours and days immediately following the attack to rescue the injured, recover the dead, fight the fires and clear enough debris to assess the situation. He describes how the salvage effort was created, organized, staffed, equipped, and given its scope of work and responsibilities. I found the discussions of the equipment and techniques employed fascinating, since there was a great deal of improvisation and trial and error involved. There wasn't a clear procedure for dealing with a capsized 600 foot long battleship whose superstructure was buried in the muddy bottom of the harbor. The reader develops an appreciation for the conditions faced by the divers and salvagers, from the ickiness of the oil, mud and mold, to the dangers of poisonous and explosive gas, to the sad and unpleasant task of recovering the remains of comrades who had been trapped for months in warm and filthy water. Imagine the mess in the cold storage lockers and freezers that had been provisioned to feed a crew of 1000 for a month or more, but sat underwater for those many months. That all but a few of the damaged ships were righted, floated, repaired and returned to action is a testament to their endurance and skill, and a heroic aspect of the war effort not usually noted.
I have only one quibble about the book, which the editors of the next edition will be sure to address. The book is filled with nautical jargon, which gives it a sense of authenticity, but at times leaves the non-expert reader wondering what Madsen is talking about. Resurrection is aimed at general audiences, not just Navy veterans. Everyone knows where the bow and stern are, and everyone knows port and starboard. But, not everyone knows what a forecastle is, what was on the quarterdeck, why did a battleship have a mast, or what scuppers were? It would not be that difficult to include a glossary, and some sketches of a ship with these terms identified. Similarly, many of the techniques used to work on the damage during the salvage effort would be much better explained with a few sketches. The book if full of photographs, mostly with informative captions. However, here too, it's not always clear just what the caption is referring to. A few annotations, with circles and arrows, would help a lot.
In summary, this book was a terrific find after visiting Pearl Harbor and reading the accounts of the attack. It is an important addition to the story of how the US Navy reacted to the attack, recovered both the ships and the base, and got on with the business of winning the war.
Good photos, heavy reading.......2007-01-15
Not for those that are looking for a story. Very clear and concise text about the happenings at Pearl. Unsure of some of it, does not correspond with other literature of it's kind. Photos are nice, but mostly what you've seen before. Some good ones though of refloating the ships.
The fleet that died and rose to fight again.......2006-11-02
Hundreds, maybe thousands of books tell the story of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the preliminary scheming by Japan, the counteroffensive by the Americans. But until now, only one has told much about the salvage of the sunken warships.
Not nearly as many died raising a fleet from the dead -- fewer than a dozen -- as died on Dec. 7, 1941. Yet the salvors' story has as nearly as much drama and danger as the story of the fighting sailors.
"They were not recognized as heroes," writes Daniel Madsen. "But they should have been."
Much of the work was done underwater, including more than 4,000 dives into the capsized battleship Oklahoma. "Diving in the black, unfamiliar world inside a submerged battleship was extremely hazardous. Lights were of little use in the murky water, and the men had to feel their way carefully through passageways, hatches, machinery and floating debris sometimes many yards from where they entered the ship.
"Face plates could be smashed if the diver collided with a beam or projection. They often had to go up and down ladders, complicating their route back. Pressure differentials caused by pumping or large leaks could suck an unwary diver into a jagged hole. Telephone cables and air hoses were frequently fouled by debris, bulkheads and hatches. Air hoses or diving suits could be punctured by sharp pieces of wreckage.
<\q>.
<\q>.
<\q>. And even if a clear path was maintained for the air hose, there was no guarantee that the pumps and compressors would not break down."
The heat of underwater welding drove dissolved gases out of the water, creating bubbles that exploded from time to time. While not especially dangerous, working with the bubbles must have been stressful.
Unfortunately, not much in the way of first-person accounts was ever collected. Apart from a memoir by an officer who led the work, no one has attempted to retell the story until Madsen in "Resurrection."
The salvage work was divided -- not equally -- between Navy men and civilian contractors.
Since the United States had not anticipated being attacked in Hawaii, no matter what the conspiracy wackos say, the Navy had not much in the way of equipment and supplies on hand.
A specialist salvage school had been created in California before the war, but it had not even begun training the first class. Most of those students learned their trade on the job at Pearl.
"It was a mammoth job, and the speed with which it was carried out spoke well of the training, maturity and flexibility of the officers involved," writes Madsen.
Many of the leaders had advanced degrees in naval architecture or other relevant fields, yet they faced novel problems. Even the salvage of the Imperial German battle fleet from Scapa Flow in 1919, a much bigger job, was simpler.
Curiously, one of the smaller jobs at Pearl Harbor proved to be the most difficult. The capsized minelayer Oglala, an old, fragile ship, was harder to empty of water and refloat than a sturdy battleship, which, once its holes were patched, at least held out water.
Oglala leaked everywhere and was sunk four times -- once by the Japanese and three times by the Americans.
What Americans remember now is the solemn memorial at the Arizona. But Madsen, relying mainly on daily and weekly sit-reps from the salvage organization, shows that that feeling took a long time to develop.
At first, the Arizona was mined for scrap metal, still useful guns and equipment and ammunition. (Madsen does not retell the interesting story of where the Arizona's 14-inch rifles ended up, high on a cliff of windward Oahu, prepared to duel Japanese battleships if they ever returned.)
Only slowly did the realization sink in that Arizona was not merely a battle wreck, but a war grave.
Target ship Utah, on the other side of Ford Island, also was not salvaged and is another, smaller war grave, but tourists don't see that ship's skeleton. (The lines to see the USS Arizona Memorial are long, and include thousands of Japanese.)
Madsen does not attempt to tell the story of the attack, on the grounds that it has been done before. The story of what happened to the rescued battleships has been told before, too, though not nearly so often.
By now, their war service is not so widely known, and it might have been as well to have retold it in an epilogue.
At the Battle of Surigao Strait in 1944, the sunken battleships of Pearl Harbor met the Japanese fleet again, in fair fight. They annihilated a Japanese battle fleet and saved the Leyte invasion force.
Your view of Pearl Harbor is NOT complete unless you have this book!.......2005-07-28
How many of us ~ naval historians or enthusiasts, or those interested in the Second World War at sea ~ have wondered what happened to the remains of the American battle line in Pearl Harbor after the second wave of Japanese attackers had departed?
For so long have publications glossed over the aftermath with bromides like 'the twilight of the gods [the battleships]' or 'the ascendancy of the aircraft carrier was now established.' At most, we have been used to recounting abbreviated lists of which ships were returned to service in the aftermath of that "infamous" attack. And there is always the spectral image of the burning ARIZONA's for'ard fighting top ... and her poignant memorial today.
But how were the wrecks and hulks dealt with, appraised and evaluated after the fires had begun to die down? What had to be done ~ in the face of the demands and priorities occasioned by the setbacks and defeats which marked the opening months of the Pacific War ~ to begin to even return some of the ships to the oil-smeared surface of Pearl? What were the salvage techniques ~ some old and tried, some forced by circumstance to be innovatively and riskily new ~ employed to roll wrecks upright, stop them from sinking and fouling fairways or berths, and, ultimately, drag them delicately into one of the few available drydocks?
Daniel Madsen rectifies all that, in this thoroughly-researched and well-illustrated (photographs and diagrams) work. In a tale well-told over eight chapters, and beginning 'the morning after' on December 8, 1941, Madsen takes us through everything: logistics, personalities, technicalities.
The demands on the various USN commands, scrambling to play 'catch-up' in the face of both the triumphant Japanese AND the new confrontations of a true 'two-ocean war', paint a comprehensive picture of the materiel and personnel challenges facing both those on the ground at Pearl and the mainland administration.
The people and personalities come to life in a narrative which, despite its frequent references to the daily, weekly and monthly meetings and memoranda which accompanied the work at Pearl, never bogs down in dry discourse. It makes for quite extraordinary reading to see just what miracles were worked with a largely displaced and semi-skilled (in salvage terms at least) population of sailors and yard workers, under the direction of some truly inspired engineering leadership.
The personnel merry-go-round which must have taxed the admin. skills in that pre-electronic era is remarkable: the former captain of the NEVADA going to sea again in command of the cruiser ASTORIA, accompanying the YORKTOWN to her fateful destiny at Midway; several hundred of the YORKTOWN's survivors returning to help re-crew the raised WEST VIRGINIA!
Special mention must be made of the photographs, many of which have never been seen before in print, and all of them of excellent quality and reproduction. From closeups of battle damage to many views of the cofferdam structures built to help 'unwater' wrecks, this book is worth buying for the visual content alone.
Additional reference value comes from the numerous profile and plan view drawings extracted from the various ships' 'battle damage reports'. I have never seen the results of the Japanese attack portrayed so clearly and graphically. And, it should be said, Madsen's editorial and design team deserve a special mention for the placement of the images, closely corresponding to their related text throughout this book's pages.
One thing the reader may find lifts an eyebrow ~ and this is based probably on our 'populist' and (until now) 'minimalist' view of the attack's results ~ is the focus on certain ships from a salvage viewpoint. This is far from being a criticism too, just a real eye-opener. I knew the NEVADA was beached as a precaution against blocking the fairway, but was dumbfounded to find out just how much damage she had in fact sustained (as were the investigators and salvage masters at the time).
The detailed accounts of the recovery of the CALIFORNIA, the capsized minelayer OGLALA at Ten Ten Dock, and the wrecked destroyers CASSIN and DOWNES in drydock ahead of the PENNSYLVANIA, are engrossing reading indeed. But for me, the highlight would be the tale of the "WeeVee" ~ the WEST VIRGINIA ~ last rememembered awash and burning with boats scurrying to and fro looking for survivors.
Last of the major combatants to be floated and drydocked, the WeeVee's saga is a fitting testament to the bravery and resourcefulness of everyone from the divers and carpenters to the base cooks and laundrymen.
Our attention has now been drawn to the unremarked but surprisingly hideous dangers of gaseous decomposition over many months in sunken compartments ~ in everything from meat freezers to the flammability of trapped fuel and vapours. I for one cannot grasp the internal, often crazily-tilted, underwater horrors which must have faced those men, but the story of the fatal effects of a release of trapped hydrogen sulphide concentrations aboard the NEVADA was compelling reading.
It is staggering to realise that all of the work which needed to be done, and was going to be able to be done, in the face of the unfolding war, was effectively complete by the third quarter of 1942, less than seven or eight months after the attack!
Madsen concludes with a breathtaking read ~ and images ~ of the 're-rolling' and recovery of the wreck of the OKLAHOMA, an incredible feat of engineering which, by then, had learned much from the often trial-and-error efforts of the early days.
My only quibble with this work ~ and it is indeed a minor one ~ is that I would have liked to see some sense of a 'timeline' against which I could develop and maintain an overview of the often-conflicting demands and progress on the efforts on the various ships dotted around (and under) the waters of the harbour. The author does a generally decent job in this regard but there is, of necessity, some disjointedness in the interweaving of the many strands. As I say, minor point only.
We owe a debt to both Madsen and the Naval Institute Press for this seminal work which, no less than one of the steel, wood and concrete patches used on the battleships, plugs one of the gaping holes in the history of the Second World War at sea.
In summary? BUY. THIS. BOOK. You will not regret it!
Inspiring story of what happened after the bombs fell.......2003-12-08
I tried to think of a way to avoid the Paul Harvey-ish cliché of "the rest of the story," but it's hard to do. Nearly all general histories of the Pearl Harbor attack either end with the close of the attack, or move into the (necessarily more important) aspect of America starting to respond to the changed world situation and coming to grips with the onset of war. Epilogues sometimes report that most of the damaged ships actually returned to the battle lines, but in-depth reports of what happened at Pearl Harbor itself following the attack are pretty rare.
Daniel Madsen steps into this void with a book that, to use another cliché, reads like a novel. Where he could easily have gotten bogged down in damage reports or engineering minutia, he instead tells a surprisingly interesting story that turns as much on personalities as on mechanics. Amid the uncertainty of never knowing for sure whether the Japanese would return for a second strike at the fleet, civilian and naval engineers, divers, repair workers, and line officers devised innovative solutions to large and sometimes unprecedented problems. I can't speak too highly of how Madsen succeeds in weaving this into an interesting and well-paced narrative.
Readers familiar with the Pearl Harbor story will appreciate finding out what happened to the ships, and the base as a whole, in the weeks and months following the attack. Although the eyes of the world moved away from Pearl and onto the wider theater of war after the first days of December, 1941, the story of what happened there is still one well worth telling. I commend Daniel Madsen for the fine job he did telling it, and recommend his work to students of the attack and naval history buffs generally.
Book Description
This is a study of China from the 1800s to the present day. It focuses on China's problems of development - the decay and collapse of the Chinese Empire, its failure to recover in the first half of the twentieth century, and its rapid emergence in world affairs since the Communist Party Revolution of 1949. This new edition examines economic growth, updates Chinese foreign policy, provides a revised account of the Tiananmen Incident, and brings the chronology completely up to date.

Misinformation about Governor Davis H. Waite.......1998-08-24
This work is very good about Ignatius and the people in his world. Probably the most complete works on Donnelly to date.
The information about Governor Waite's Bloody Bridle Speech is distorted and incorrect. In fact this page # 323 isn't even footnoted in the Waite index. To get a correct copy of this speech, feel free to E-mail me. Frank S. Waite

Drug-addled, welfare-using and AIDS-infected, Rosa Lee--a black woman living in the slums of Washington, D.C.--shines an enormous amount of light on the seemingly intractable problems of the underclass by allowing Leon Dash to tell her story. You won't find any diagrams or number-crunching in this book, just an absorbing tale of inner-city despair. Dash won the Pulitzer Prize for his series of articles on Rosa Lee for the Washington Post. The book is even better--easily the best of its type since Alex Kotlowitz's There Are No Children Here.

The Real hard times of a citizen growing up in The projects........2006-06-07
Rosa Lee: A Mother and Her Family In Urban America shows what can really happen if an individual does not require a successful education. The problems of Rosa Lee were dropping out of school because her own mother says that education is a waste of time and gets her nowhere in life. Other problems were growing up in the projects selling and shooting heroin, tricking, and shoplifting her way through life. The biggest problem of Rosa Lee were knowing six out of your eight children are doing the same activities as herself. Her number one quote of getting through life, "To Survive", is the worst way to live through life as a poor individual. Leon Dash really shows what it's like growing up in one of poorest ghettos of Washington D.C. The Rosa Lee book is astonishing and I encourage everyone to read it so they are influenced. I give it two thumbs up!
Thought provoking.......2005-01-07
If the measure of a good book is that it exposes you to new information and makes you think, then this a great book! I enjoyed Mr Dash's even-handed writing style, it wasn't overly critical or sympathetic. Rosa Lee has made some very poor decisions in her lifetime, ones that will have far-reaching effects on the generations that come after her. The book gives you the insight as to why she made those decisions without excusing her actions. I came away from this book with more questions than I had when I started reading. It's almost a "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" scenario...it makes you wonder if Rosa Lee created her own problems or if her problems created her? As a Sociologist I have always been interested in urban blight and deviant behavior and try to read as much on the topic as possible, and I must say that this is one of the better books that I have read. I would also highly recommend "The Corner" as another book that explores the issues facing the urban underclass. Thank you Mr. Dash for daring to uncover an ugly part of America that some people wish would stay hidden!
Your Tax Dollars At Work.......2003-04-16
This book made me incredibly angry. In a nutshell, it is the horrifying story of one woman's life and legacy of ignorance, immorality, illegality, and vice. It's a very compelling read and well-written in terms of the subject matter, but there is a consistent theme throughout the book of "failure of the system," which I found insulting considering Rosa Lee and her family's grave manipulation, exploitation, and abuse of every helping hand extended.
Another World!!.......2002-08-06
I did'nt want to be judgmental, so I when into the book open mindedly. What I found out was Rosa Lee was Mentally abused by her mother and was loved by her father! When she has children, she overcompensates for everything they do. If you want Drugs, drama and reality you've got it. Three generations!! I found a silver lining in Rosa Lee's cloud, NOW YOU HAVE TO FIND IT!!
it's the system, man - but..........2001-09-04
Mr. Dashs treatment of Rosa Lees life course achieves a highly deserving goal by apparently paradoxical means: it exposes the traps of initial and subsequent living conditions by showing an individual's life shaped by it's decisions and choices. He never allows the reader to wallow in simple compassion or anger, and he never resorts to the true but useless explanation that the system is responsible for Rosa Lees miserable life. He always keeps your mind active and attentive.
A good example is his report on Rosa Lees trial for shoplifting: while the defence insists that Rosa Lee might be a thief but is a very unfortunate woman and had to steal in order to support her family and her addiction, Dash points out that Rosa Lee has been shoplifting already in her early childhood while none of her siblings did shoplift. This suggest that her behavior might have had a functionality within her relationship with her mother, not only in her relationship with the system. By never letting individual dynamics and decisions, however constraining their contexts and however dismal their consequences, be covered up by the overwhelming explanatory power of economic deprivation, he manages to show in a touching and revealing way how a person's place within a system translates into his or her behavior and behavior outcomes. Especially by never denying the individual Rosa Lee or any of her children their agency in shaping their lives, by never reducing them to inevitable victims unfortunate-but-now-beyond-redemption, by describing extensively how two of teh children escaped addiction and poverty, he exposes the systems' crushing cruelty.
