    Book Description

Drawing on interviews and observations in matched pairs of firms, Contrasting Involvements explores the differences between management accounting practices in Britain and Germany. The author deals with contrasting Anglo-German approaches, particularly regarding how organizational members verbally mobilize accounting, how management accountants relate their craft to processes of strategy-making, and how accounting becomes implicated in organizational processes of accountability. These three themes point towards specific appreciations of the reality of accounting and management by organizational members in the two countries. Ahrens gives readers a sense of the immediacy with which accounting practitioners in both countries appreciate their craft, while emphasizing that they have different kinds of knowledge. Detailed examples illustrate how different enactments of organizational structures can be related to management accountants' contrasting involvements in organizational action.

        Book Description

The establishment in 1993 of an ad hoc international criminal tribunal to prosecute war crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia reflects the world community's renewed efforts to enforce the international rule of law and respect for human rights. Yet, despite the obligation of UN member states to arrest, detain, and transfer to the tribunals those charged with war crimes, thus far only one-third of those publicly indicted by the tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has been detained. The most notorious offenders--Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic--continue to enjoy their freedom.

In order to examine how the world community is addressing this problem and what needs to be done, The Century Foundation/Twentieth Century Fund convened a distinguished, international task force--chaired by Justice Richard Goldstone, the first chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda. Concluding that "there can be no lasting peace in Bosnia until all war criminals are arrested and brought to justice," the task force recommends, among other actions, that states use military force, where necessary, to apprehend indicted war criminals and freeze their assets.

In addition to the task force statement, the book includes two papers that discuss the obligations and options of the international community with regard to indicted war criminals, as well as other background materials.

          Book Description

The stars in the night sky over the Hawaiian Islands overwhelm us with feelings of wonder and amazement. They provoke images of Hawaii's first people, sailing from far away lands, finding their way by use of the stars in the heavens. Their knowledge of the skies, from the Hokupaa (North Star) to the Hanaiakamalama (Southern Cross) helped them navigate the vast Pacific in double-hulled canoes without use of compasses or maps. In contrast, today's astronomers have explored the heavens with the use of advanced telescopes, satellites and space vehicles traveling to our moon and planets beyond.

Stars Over Hawaii presents an overview of current knowlege about the night sky above us and the vast universe beyond. Twelve monthly star charts, plus two which label star names in Hawaiian, will help guide you through the year in your own explorations of Hawaii's brilliant starlit sky. Readers can learn about the phenomenon known locally as "Lahaina Noon" which cannot happen in the mainland United States. Hawaiian astronomy is explored through legend and what oral knowledge has survived to the present time. The chapter on Polynesian Voyaging and Wayfinding includes Mau's Compass and the Hawaiian star compasses designed by Nainoa Thompson and reproduced with the generous permission of the Polynesian Voyaging Society.

Originally compiled by Edwin H. Bryan, Jr. in 1955, this revised edition of Stars Over Hawaii contains a tremendous amount of new information contributed by Dr. Richard Crowe, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Included in this version are current theories about the formation of our solar system and knowledge gained through space exploration and powerful modern telescopes.

Appendix One, which explores night and day, and the biography of the author were contributed by Dr. Walt Steiger, Professor Emeritus of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Stars Over Hawaii marries the knowledge of the masterful navigators of ancient Hawaii with today's astronomy experts to bring you an all-encompassing view of Hawaii's skies, past and present.

                    Book Description

With its extreme accuracy and reasonable computational efficiency, the linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) method has emerged as the standard by which density functional calculations for transition metal and rare-earth containing materials are judged. The second edition of Planewaves, Pseudopotentials and the LAPW Method presents an updated, thorough and self-contained exposition of the first principles methods for calculating properties of solids, in particular the "LAPW" method and will make connections between this method and planewave pseudopotential approaches. Theory is discussed, but the emphasis is on how practical implementation proceeds. In addition, the author suggests future directions for adapting the LAPW method to simulations of complex materials requiring large unit cells. He does this by elucidating the connections between the LAPW method and planewave pseudopotential approaches and by showing how Car-Parrinello type algorithms can be adapted to the LAPW method. The new edition contains new sections on developments over the last 10 years, including for example the LDA+U method, non-collinear magnetism and the APW+LO method.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars truly outstanding book on all aspects of life on earth.......2001-03-09

This is a wonderful book, one of my five favorites when it comes to paleontology. Where to begin! First all, the book covers the entire history of life on earth, beginning with the origin of the earth itself, through the beginning of life, the advent of multicellular life, the bizarre Vendian fauna of the late Precambrian, through the now famous world of the Burgess Shale, into the explosion of life in the seas of the Cambrian, on into the debut of fishes, the conquering of land by plants, insects, and amphibians, to the development of reptiles, all the way through early mammals, dinosaurs, pterosaurs, the Cenozoic "Age of Mammals," the Ice Ages, and early man. As I have pointed out in other reviews, too many books focus exclusively or mainly on dinosaurs, and David Norman deserves high credit for not negelecting other aspects of the development of life on earth.

Second, he is thorough in his coverage on most aspects of the paleonotological record. In his section on trilobites for instance, he has photographs of trilobite fossils and artists illustrations of trilobites swimming, molting, walking, curling up in defense, egg laying, and plowing the seabed for food. The accompanying text is no less detailed and useful. On the lengthy section of conquering the land, Norman has a great diagram showing the major structural changes that fishes underwent to conquer the terrestrial world (particularly in the areas of the pelvic and pectoral girdles and the spine), several illustrations of amphibian skeletons, and several nice illustrations of early amphibians, both individually and in the context of their environment. Dinosaurs as you might imagine get a huge section, with an entire additional chapter devoted the evolution of birds and dinosaur-bird relationships (including discussion of issues of dinosaur endothermy). Marine reptiles of the Mesozoic are not neglected, with many excellent illustrations including some very fine paintings, photographs of fossils, and a diagram illustrating the differences between the swimming and body styles of three main groups, ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and pliosaurs. The section on extinct mammals and mammalian evolution is quite thorough and one of my favorites, as extinct mammals are otherwise very poorly covered in the popular literature. In a readable and engaging format Norman discusses such varied topics in this area as the differences between birds and mammals with regards to the efficiency of their breathing systems, the evolutionary history of Australia's marsupials, the Great Faunal Interchange between North and South America, the evolution of whales, and the rise of grasslands and the role that played in mammalian evolution.

Third, the book, as you might gather, is richly illustrated. Though very much a great text one can sit down and read, it is packed with excellent photographs, drawings, and paintings of fossils, skeletons, animals and plants as they appeared in life, and prehistoric environments. Personal favorites include on pages 100-101 the early reptile Hylonmous scampering after a meal in a coal swamp, on pages 136-137 a scene of two Late Triassic pterosaurs fishing for a meal, and a Gigantopithecus family with associated fauna and flora on page 219.

Fourth (do you still need a reason to buy this book?) the book is very readable. Though quite accurate (though unfortunately one or two aspects of its coverage of the Burgess Shale and dinosaurs are a bit dated, hard to avoid), it is not a difficult read and one need not be a professional biologist. Relevant terms are well explained, often with the aid of diagrams and charts.

                    5 out of 5 stars It's Just Outsanding!.......2000-03-28

Norman planned this book ir order to provide a pleasant and highly understandable reading without lack of information, covering everything related to pre-historic life, from the greatest animals to the life development hypotesis. It also brings to the reader one of the best visions of life sucession and evolution on Earth. It's wonderfully ilustrated with some pictures that you can see in famous museum exibitions, such as the Deinonychus attack, from Uk National History Museum (pages 158-159) and many others. It is my favourite pre-historic book and I strongly believe that it is a must for every natural science library or collection. It's suitable for everyone interested in a good and clear aproach in this subject. It's not properlly a scholar book but it can be a great help even for paleontology students.

5 out of 5 stars It is a pleasure to read!!!.......1998-09-21

This book is one of the best of its kind. It uncoveres the Evolution of vertebrates in a perfekt way. Beautifull illustrations, which make the animals feel closer to you then ever. This book is really a pleasure to read!!!

5 out of 5 stars Textbook thorough and excellent general reference........1998-06-15

The book is logically put together and is beautiful in format. Although our library has assigned a Youth designation, the book would make an excellent text for a full-year course in paleology at senior high school or college level, and serve as a reference work thereafter.

                    5 out of 5 stars Very thorough........1997-11-09

This book was very interesting because it covered vertebrates from the very beginning (origin of the universe), but it was still very thorough. Very good illustrations and pictures.

Classic Tales of Mulla Nasreddin (a.k.a. Nasrudin) is a bilingual, delightfully illustrated book of "holy fool" stories. The selection of stories is exquisite with a bias towards the pithy saying stories e.g. "Mulla was once asked: `How long will people continue to be born and die?' Mulla answered profoundly: `Until Heaven and Hell are both full.'"

                        Book Description

The Panzerkampfwagen IV has often been referred to as the 'workhorse' of the German Army in World War II. This important weapon went through several upgrades and improvements and was the only German tank to have been produced continuously throughout the entire war. This book specifically deals with the short-barrelled Panzer IV, built until February 1942, which saw service from the invasion of Poland, through the fall of Western Europe and the campaigns of North Africa to the steppes of the Soviet Union.
This book takes on a series of increasingly complex construction projects covering all the major Panzer IV types, including the rare multi-turreted Neubau-Panzerkampfwagen IV.

2 out of 5 stars How We Used to Do It.......2007-09-12

The Panzerkampfwagen IV was the only German tank to remain in production for the entire six years of World War Two, and was central in almost every campaign from 1939 to 1945. Aimed at very advanced modelers, this book's articles show how to combine the 1/35th scale Tamiya late model Panzer IV kits released in the 1990's with a few parts from the dreadful Tamiya Panzer IV D from the 1970's and some resin and brass aftermarket parts to create the early, short-gun variants of this most important German tank. Unfortunately, timing is everything, and the book became obsolete seemingly within minutes of publication, as each of these early Panzer IV variants (except the very first production version) became available within the last two years as new, state of the art kits from Dragon-1/35 Pz. IV Ausf. C - Superkit and Tristar-1/35 Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf.D/T. In a sense, Tom Cockle has been "hoist by his own petard," as he served as technical advisor on some of these excellent new model kits.
Curiously, one chapter is devoted to modeling the Neubaufahrzeug heavy tank prototype from 1932, a tank that was unrelated to the Panzer IV, and was limited to just three prototypes. The 1/35th scale resin kit by Armo used in this build is given a fairly poor rating (Cromwell in the UK reportedly offers a better kit).
This title doesn't offer any scale reference drawings or alternate marking schemes (other than the the single scheme shown on each of the featured tanks), and there is little in the way of "how to" model building advice that we find in Steve Zaloga's books in this series. Overall, it is really difficult to justify buying the book now, unless you just want to study the painting styles used in the final finishes.

I got back into modeling after a hiatus of some years. This Osprey book helped me a lot. Excellent pictures, good suggestions for practitioners. Not for the beginner, this is a very useful tool for this specific tank.

                          Book Description

Over one hundred and fifty years ago, champions of women's rights in the United States, Britain, France, and Germany formed the world's earliest international feminist movement. Joyous Greetings is the first book to tell their story. From Seneca Falls in upstate New York to the barricades of revolutionary Paris, from the Crystal Palace in London to small towns in the German Rhineland, early feminists united to fight for the cause of women. At the height of the Victorian period, they insisted their sex deserved full political equality, called for a new kind of marriage based on companionship, claimed the right to divorce and to get custody of their children, and argued that an unjust economic system forced women into poorly paid jobs. We meet Jeanne Deroin, jailed for organizing unions, who wrote inspirational tracts from her Parisian cell to women abroad; Matilda Anneke, who fought on horseback during the Revolution of 1848 and published women's newspapers in Germany and, after emigrating, in America; Ernestine Rose, a Jewish woman who sued her father for control of her dowry and became a popular public speaker; and Lucretia Mott, the Quaker minister and abolitionist, who maintained international connections and helped to found the American women's movement. These women were part of the vanguard of a feminist movement that emerged as early as the 1830s, proving that feminism transcended national boundaries and existed decades before the suffragettes. These women rejected the traditional view that women's subordination was preordained, natural, and universal. Restoring these daring activists' achievements to history, Joyous Greetings passes on their inspiring and empowering message to today's new generation of feminists.

I only finished half of this book and then lost it!! I have tried to no avail to replace it so that I might continue reading it. Hall brings alive a topic (mapping) that one might not at first glance find interesting. He has a tremendous breadth of knowledge regarding astronomy, geology, biology, and imparts it with clear, concise examples. His ability to slice through so many diverse fields and tie everything together with the concept of mapping is truly astounding. I only hope I can locate another copy so that I might finish the book.
