Subvolume III/19f covers the magnetic properties of actinide elements and their compounds. The present part 1 is concerned with the actinide elements and their compounds with 3d, 4d and 5d-elements. Part 2 (compounds with main group elements), which is due in the near future, also contains a comprehensive index of substances for volumes III/19a ... III/19f. Data on the properties that depend on the preparation of the samples measured, as for instance, thin films, amorphous alloys or the magnetic alloys used in technical applications, are compiled in the last subvolumes of III/19, viz. Leaves no subject untouched !.......2004-07-31

This book covers such a wide period of time and stretches across a great area of land and battlefields, that I was doubtful that a complete understanding of the period could emerge from this single work. I was very wrong. Although a bit hard to read at some points the writing is relevant, conclusive and leaves no "open-ended" ideas.
One thing missing though is a map of Europe with the place names of that time. besides this, a great work on medieval warfare. If you only plan to read a single book on the subject, this is the one !

Lots of Information, Tough Read.......2004-06-29

This book is a thorough study of the warfare of this age. It includes good information on the psychological state of the combatants and the development of different tactics throughout the time period. Much effort is spent dissecting the different uses of knights and foot troops with descriptions of battles as support. I read a lot of military history, but this book is a tough read. It is more like a reference work than anything else and the organzition within the chapters could be better. I recommend this only to the most ardent history buffs.

Granted, the scope of this work doesn't allow for much detail, but Verbruggen's explaination of events that revolutionized warfare are thorough and well-reasoned. Also, Verbruggen debunks the myth that warfare in this period was near total anarchy with little rhyme or reason. Make time for this one!

Superb book.......1998-03-17

This second edition of Verbruggen, with the footnotes restored, is the best single book on medieval warfare.

This book chronicles the son of a great Saudi-Arabian self made millionaire who uses his connections in the Arab world, as well as around the globe, to establish the most feared terror organization in the history of mankind. This book looks at the person Osama Bin Laden and not just the image that is portrayed of him. From his early years, through the beginnings of his Islamic fundamentalist beginnings, through his current state of refugee, Adam Robinson looks at the life struggles of Osama, the current struggles of Islam, as well as the all the related historical and current events relating to Bin Laden.
Although he is in no way sympathetic to Osama Bin Laden, Adam Robinson does exactly what he intended to do in this book, he shows the reader the man behind the mask. While providing a great deal factual information concerning the early stages of the Saudi state, and chronicling the past eighty years of Middle East history, Adam Robinson is able to show the reader how this man behind the mask fits in to, and has effected the course of world history. When finished with the book the reader is left with knowledge of a person and his surroundings, not just the image that is portrayed of Osama and the Arab world by the media.
The concepts and the amount of information is undergraduate level or above. Some basic knowledge of Middle Eastern history and geography is necessary to fully absorb the book's contents however.

Too much sensationalism.......2006-02-20

Although this is the first book devoted to bin Laden's life I have read, I can't believe that there are not better out there bidding for our attention.

Robinson seems to have in his mind that we need to see the master terrorist through his prism, so he overlays useful facts and chronologies of periods of bin Laden's life with his own sensationalism and interpretation, including claims of homoeroticism in the al-Qaeda leader's relationship with two of his male counterparts.

A severe drawback of this book is also a complete lack of sources, either published or named people.

When he does manage to stay away from innuendo and assumption, Robinson's book does have quite a bit to offer. For me, however, these times do not come often enough.

This biography of Bin Laden gives more detail into his life than any other book that I have read on the subject. Particular attention is given to Osama's childhood and upbringing and how these years may have led him to become the terrorist mastermind that he his today.

Hopefully, this book will not be the final word on this evil man. If we are lucky, a revised edition will one day have to be issued to include chapters on his capture and prosecution, but, until that time, this book gives the most complete portrait of Osama Bin Laden.

Billy Bean hit indeed pitched a shut-out and hit a grand slammer with his autobiography.

Thanks Billy, for speaking out about a universal truth that society dare not speak out about. Traditionally men (all men) have paid a severe price for daring to reveal their affectional feelings for one another, which I believe to be an underlying cause of a great deal of violence and human misery.

I am sure you already had a lot of friends, prior to writing the book. By writing the book you proved to be a true friend of mine, as well as of ALL other men.

Fascinating glimpse into the closeted world of major league baseball.......2006-11-10

This is a heartfelt story that has not been told before -- a glimpse inside the world of major league baseball from the perspective of a perceptive and sensitive gay man. Billy writes with real passion about the sport he loves, the incredible pressure to excel, and the high personal price a gay man pays for remaining in the closet. He has a lot to say about the culture of professional sports, how players relate to each other both on and off the field, and what it takes to excel in a very demanding job. And for those who are not baseball fans, a useful glossary of baseball terms and slang is included at the back of the book.

I think Billy helps to prove that the stereotype that gay men are vain is wrong. Here is a man that could have any gay guy he wants and is more interested in love.

Having to miss his partner's funeral almost brought tears to my eyes. This story right there provides yet another reason as to why we need gya marriage in the US>

A solid base hit!.......2006-02-04

Billy Bean played for 3 major league baseball teams (the Dodgers, Tigers and Padres). He was never a star in the majors, but he had a decent career. Would Bean have a story to tell if he was not gay? Maybe, because it seems everyone writes an autobiography these days. This isn't just the story of a gay man. This is the story of a man struggling to discover who he really is.
Bean discusses his childhood, his high school playing days and his years in the minor leagues. While he progressed through life, he always seemed to feel as if something was missing or not quite right. Still he got married and thought he was living the 'right' life.
Eventually and painfully, Bean realized what he was and decided to act upon it, even though he was not ready to go public with everything. Tragically and much too quickly, his first meaningful gay relationship ended with his partner's death due to AIDS.
Bean's story of coping with this loss, while coming to terms with his sexuality is an engrossing story. You can feel Bean's pain. Gay or not, we all go through our own identity struggles. I guess that is one thing that makes Bean's book good. We can all relate to his struggles. Yet, on the other hand, I have no idea what he must have endured, but Bean paints a vivid and often painful picture of his journey. This makes the book a good read for all people.
I won't totally kill the ending, but I will say that it is uplifting and positive.
