Corporate Governance, Accountability, and Pressures to
Perform: An International Study, Professor Demirag provides an up-to-date review of the structures and characteristics of the various financial and corporate governance systems that exist in different countries around the world. The scope of this book is wide-ranging and reflects the authors' extensive experience in this area. The book provides a useful framework for addressing variety of key issues including why and how some companies take advantage of differences in corporate governance practices, while others fail, in the performance and management of their research and development practices.
This book explores how corporate governance systems in various European countries, the United States, Australia and Japan are embedded in their overall national financial systems and whether the national corporate governance systems are converging to some extent. Through the use of a survey, the book
examines how various financial and corporate governance systems
protect companies from, or expose them to, short-term pressures.
An attempt is also made to measure the short-term perceptions of
over one thousand top company executives internationally and to
show how they react to these pressures in the management of
their research and development.
The ultimate aim of this book is to identify those financial
systems and corporate governance structures where short-term
pressures are resisted and longer-term investment decisions are
encouraged.

Customer Reviews:
I Would Give You the Moon If It Were Mine To Give.......2002-09-10
This is such a cool book and it makes a wonderful gift for anyone who loves the moon but is particularly nice for grade school and middle school kids that are interested in Astronomy. As a pagan I find it useful when I teach about the waxing and waning of the moon, eclipses, etc.
It uses clever pop-up pictures and gadgets to explain the relationship of the Earth, Sun and Moon, the Moon's directional movement, the eight basic phases of the moon as seen from the Northern Hemisphere, eclipses, the Goddess Diana in Her moon chariot, the Earth as seen from the Moon, and a futuristic tourist moon station. The art is clear and beautiful and the entire book encourages interactive learning. It is not only interesting but entertaining. Have this handy before the next full moon, share it with someone, then go outside and experience the glorious lunar beauty, enriched by knowledge. I enjoyed it and I think you will, too.
Great way to introduce your kid to the planet Moon.......2002-01-17
I read this book to my 4 year old daughter over Chirstmas and she loved it. It was both interactive (many things for the child to feel and do while you go from page to page) and informative. I thought it was too much for a 4 year old, but she liked it much and had many questions to ask. We read this again and again and now, I have to show her the real moon in the night. It shows the movement of the earth and the moon, information on the planetary system and fun facts on the moon expedition. I believe it would be very educational to somewhat older children and it will definitely create good first interest in the science and astronomy where they will learn more at school. Great book. Well written, having the inquisitive child in mind. Fun book for adults as well (my husband is a physicist and he enjoyed it very much)and parents can enjoy this book with their kids at the same time.
Wonderful Book for Kids.......2001-12-13
I found The Moon Book to be fun and informative. The pictures were vibrant and themes interesting. I enjoyed Ms. Seymour's use of scientific, social, and mythological themes to demonstrate the important impact the Moon has had on humanity. I recommend this book to any parent, and espcially to those who have a child interested in space or who wish their child be interested in space.

Not surprisingly, the Net has turned out to be quite hospitable to smut. Whether pornophiles log on in the privacy of their own homes or the spine-tingling confines of the workplace, a virtual peepshow offers unparalleled (if highly disembodied) privacy. Still, the creators of Nerve.com clearly had more in mind than old-fashioned filth when they launched their Web site. This was to be a classier venue for erotica, with a mandate to be "direct with both word and image, whether the result is flushed faces, genitals, or perhaps just reflective thought." Have they succeeded? The Nerve anthology, assembled by founders Genevieve Field and Rufus Griscom, finds the debauched editors batting about .500 in their thought-provoking, blush-invoking mission.
There are contributions by the usual, sex-friendly suspects, from Sallie Tisdale to Dr. Joycelyn Elders, and dancing queen Lisa Carver draws some intriguing distinctions between sexualists (id-driven fornicators) and sensualists (romantic moths drawn to the scented-candle flame). But there are some surprises, too. John Perry Barlow, better known as a Grateful Dead lyricist and Internet pundit, communes convincingly with his inner lesbian in "A Ladies' Man." A saucy snippet from John Hawkes's The Passion Artist turns up, along with an amusing meditation on the Better Sex video series by Ruth Shalit (who seems awfully familiar with the contemporary pantheon of porn). On the other hand, Rick Moody's paean to polysexuality goes a little too heavy on the solemnity, as does Deborah Boxer's account of her life as a 28-year-old virgin. And what about the photos? Spicy stuff, with an all-too-penetrable patina of artsiness to them. --Bob Brandeis
Book Description
New York magazine called Nerve "the Web's most intelligent forum for erotica." Now, from the creators of Nerve.com comes an original collection of sexual fiction and nonfiction from some of today's best writers.
Since its online debut in 1997, Nerve has been publishing brazen, titillating, and intelligent prose and photography. Nerve: Literate Smut highlights some of the webzine's most acclaimed stories and essays by writers such as Norman Mailer, Sallie Tisdale, Rick Moody, Thom Jones, and Dr. Joycelyn Elders, as well as striking photographs by Andres Serrano, Richard Kern, Sylvia Plachy, and others. Nerve's founders frame the texts and photos with original and revealing essays on the many sides of sex--from shame and habits to taboos, debauchery, and, of course, love. This volume demonstrates why Nerve is more than the latest web phenomenon--it's a bold new sexual sensibility and a precocious force in American culture.
Customer Reviews:
Somewhat disappointing........2001-04-24
This book is correctly subtitled; the writing is certainly literate, and, given that it has a sufficient sexual content to offend those with low levels of prurience tolerance, I suppose it must be acknowledged to be smut. Still, for all of that, it failed in it's implied mission, if not its stated one; I expected (and wanted) this book to be a collection of well-written erotica, unlike most porn, which is written by and for the barely-literate. And while a few of the entries accomplished this, most failed miserably at the task of being erotic. Some were interesting, even thought-provoking. But very few were sexy. I expected better; I expected interesting, thought-provoking, AND sexy. I guess I just expected too much.
Disappointing, barely sexy.......2000-07-02
It fascinates me how people can write so many words about sex and not be sexy. A couple of the essays are decent, but the fiction is incredibly shallow and non-erotic, just like on their site. The phony virgin story has to be the worst. _Much_ better erotic writing is being put up on the Web every month by places like scarlettletters.com and cleansheets.com . I can only say that I'm glad a friend gave me his copy of this book and I didn't buy it!
But is it art?.......1999-03-10
This book is not about how to have great sex. It's about sex. Period. And it's wonderful. The essays compiled by editors Genevieve Field and Rufus Griscom are excellently written, and may give the reader that certain answer to a certain question. Or else, they may simply provide some of that squeaky clean entertaiment we all look forward to when reading about sex. If you have ever wondered what other people - besides your closest friends - think about sex in general, perhaps you should look into this one... And I cannot possibly forget to mention all the wonderful photographs! Although it is obvious that some seem to playfully balance on edge of being classified as porn (our more conservative readers, beware), all of them are undoubtedly art, and most are undoubtedly nude. This is really one of the most intelligent books I've read on the subject of erotica in general...
Review of Nerve from "The Book Report".......1998-10-19
This review also appears on America Online's "The Book Report" (Sept 8, 1998).
The only thing more difficult than writing well about sex is writing about it honestly. That's what a couple of twentysomething editors, Rufus Griscom and Genevieve Field, discovered when they left their jobs to launch the online sex magazine Nerve.com last summer. "Sex is a subject tripwired with insecurities and conflicts --a subject that people lie about as a matter of course," note Griscom and Field in their introduction to NERVE: LITERATE SMUT. One peek at this anthology --- a sampling of previously published essays, stories and photos preserved offline in the traditional way suggests that many of the contributors evidently felt up to the challenge.
Nonetheless, the volume's title is something of a misnomer --- there's not much smut (literate or otherwise), and if it's Nancy Friday or Penthouse Forum you're looking after, look elsewhere. But if what you're after are honest and perceptive essays about sex, you'll find several here.... --- Reviewed by Paul Zakrzewski
Everyone's favorite subject, from all angles.......1998-10-16
As a regular reader of Nerve online, I was happy to find my favorite Web site in hard copy. A Publisher's Weekly review of this book pointed out that Nerve's reportage, opinion, and thought pieces might appear in more or less mainstream mags -- true, but for me, the point is that mainstream mags wouldn't give you the sexy stuff all at once. Most magazine editors will put in one sex-related piece per issue, or every few issues. And even if that's the piece that most interests their readers, the readers themselves might not want smut (however literate) piling up on the coffee table where the kids and neighbors can see it. They want something smart but sedate, like the Atlantic, on the coffee table. Ah, but on the Web -- that's different, and that's what's so brilliant about Nerve. It serves up an editorial mix that's similar to the Atlantic et al. (fiction, journalism, essays, reviews, artwork), but all of it focused on what's secretly our favorite subject. For anyone who feels that too much of a good thing is great, here it is.
One of the things I like most about the book is that it retains that mix, and reflects different moods, tastes, and preoccupations -- the variety in itself says something about sex, or a possible approach to sex. And each section of the book has both the abovementioned variety *and* coherence, resonance. Very cool. I was daunted at first by the appearance of a section called Reportage, which sounds a bit humorless, but the works in it were totally entertaining and thoughtful -- as were all the section introductions. All told, this is just a delightful book.
Book Description
The Conquest of Morocco tells the story of France's last great colonial adventure. At the turn of the twentieth century, Morocco was a nation yet to emerge from the Middle Ages, ruled by local warlords and riven by religious fanaticism. But in the mad scramble for African colonies, Morocco had one great attraction for the Europeans: it was available. In 1903, France undertook to conquer the exotic and backward country. By the time World War I broke out the conquest was virtually complete.
Based on extensive original research, The Conquest of Morocco is a splendid work of popular history.
Customer Reviews:
This is not a review........2006-01-25
This is not a review. I wanted to point out what I feel is a big problem when buying a book that you can not see inside, as you would if you were in a bookstore. The few pages they offer still don't help. If you can't look inside the whole book, what Amazon needs is to provide a place where people can submit questions about specifics they are looking for in a book. For instance, I want to know how the French Imperialistic take over of Morocco or other parts of North Africa affected the women. I've read that women in Algeria for instance turned to prostitution or were forced into it by the French. Does anyone know of a book on that subject?
The French way.......2005-08-30
Morocco has long had relations with Europe. After the fall of Rome the Vandals came from Europe through to Morrocco and North Africa. later in the 8th century the Arabs, newly converted to Islam, swept through Morocco on their way to Jihad in Europe. Later, after the reconquista of Spain in 1492 the Spanish moved into Morocco, at first to free European slaves. In the 1700-1800s Morocco was on seat of the Barbary pirates who plagued European ships and took European slaves. In the late 18th century this all ended and the cycle began anew with the French conquest. The SPanish had a small northern strip of Morocco but this book focuses only on the French role, which is perhaps a disappointing for the Spanish war with the Mountain Rif(Berber) tribes was as interesting if not more so.
This book, like Porch's others, is very good, artfully told, beautifully rendered, an easy fun and popular read. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Africa, colonialism or the 19th century.
Seth J. Frantzman
Solid - 3.5.......2005-06-19
This is essentially a case study of European imperialism at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. The author is an expert on the French Army who has drawn into this topic by his interest in the colonial French Army. This is not, however, a campaign or traditional military history. Porch's emphasis is really on the politics of conquest and he does a good job of presenting multiple points of view, including analyses of French metropolitan politics and Moroccan politics. Porch takes pains to rebut the traditional schematic view of imperial conquest as systematically planned and driven by economic motives. In the case of Morocco, at least, colonization was not widely popular in France, though there was a substantial colonial lobby. Complicating the colonial enterprise was the fact that among Frenchmen supporting imperialism in Morocco, there was considerable disagreement about methods. Just as important were the personal ambitions and motives of French officials and soldiers on the ground in Morocco and Algeria. Motivations for imperialism in Morocco appear to be less economic than considerations of national prestige, the murky calculations of inter-European diplomacy, and the personalities of major actors like Gen. Lyautey, who became proconsul in Morocco.
Porch presents Morocco as a feudal/tribal society stressed by contact with modernizing Europe. Morocco's disorder was exacerbated by the predatory economic and political policies of the European powers. The French, in particular, fomented unrest in an effort to justify conquest. French tactics also inadvertantly tended often to provoke resistance. Porch shows that the goal of a "civilizing" mission, held sincerely by some Frenchmen, including Lyautey, was either window dressing or a self-delusion. Ultimately, the conquest depended on sponsorship of dubious proxies and the naked use of force.
The French conquest of Morocco at the turn of the century........2002-06-05
Porch focuses his story on the last grab at Africa from a European country (except Mussolini's grab at Ethiopia). The story resolves around a general named Lautrey nibbling away at the borders of a falling apart Morocco. The Sultan no longer commands the repect of his countrymen and the Eurpoean powers have set up their privileges in the country. France sets the conditions whereby the Colonial department can add Morocco as a
protectorate. I like Porch's writing style. This book focuses on Morocco similar to where The Scramble for Africa focuses on the colonial experience of all Africa.
Geat History and a Great Read!.......1999-11-24
I have read this author's account on the French Foreign Legion and 'The Conquest of the Sahara' and this book is just as good as those two. Douglas Porch almost seems to have a inside line into what it must have felt like to be one of the actors of these great drama's. If you want to read a great book and learn something of the French involvement in the Middle East, you'll love this book and his others. Take the chance and buy a copy and then sit down and enjoy!

Book Description
Lyautey and the French Conquest of Morocco describes and analyzes the method of colonial conquest and rule linked to the name of Marshal Louis-Hubert Lyautey (1854-1934), France's first resident general in Morocco and the most famous of France's twentieth-century overseas soldier-administrators. Lyautey popularized the notions of "peaceful penetration" and "indirect rule" as part of a grand colonial design of military pacification, economic development, political modernization, and social betterment. Lyautey believed that imperialism could be a life-giving force for both Frenchmen and Moroccans alike; during his thirteen years as resident general he boldly promoted France's actions in Morocco as the "highest form" of imperialism. This book traces the development of Lyautey's ideas on conquest and rule at home and abroad and shows how they translated into practice. While there was much that was praiseworthy in Lyautey's approach to colonial matters, in the end he always relied on force, and it failed to stem Moroccan resistance to French rule. Based on archival material in Morocco and France, Lyautey and the French Conquest of Morocco is the first book to deal in a detailed manner with French pacification strategy in Morocco and with the mechanics of "indirect rule" (always, in reality, rather more direct than indirect). It should be of great value to readers of nineteenth- and twentieth-century French, European, and North African history and to students of colonialism and imperialism.

Book Description
Beatrix Campbell argues that Diana was hounded by a press that regarded her as an easy target. Her exposure of the coldness of the royal family was part of her espousal of a number of radical causes that she supported during her latter years.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting reading, but perhaps a bit too male-bashing.......2002-12-28
I'm not quite sure why I decided to purchase this book; ...I thought this would provide a different look at an exhaustively covered subject.
First, I would not recommend this book to a "casual fan" of Diana. There is some deep reading here, it's not a book that can be skimmed and understood. You have to *read* it. ...
Ms. Campbell seems to pull much of her book from other sources, with extensive quoting being quite a bit of what you are reading. She then takes these quotes and excerpts and adds her interpretations and opinions. Sometimes these were spot on, other times I felt that she was stretching a bit to prove her point. I also feel that the title is somewhat misleading; the book wasn't entirely what I expected. The author's repetitive claims of Diana being "penetrated" by the media's cameras, the world's eyes get rather boring and made for some eye-rolling on my part. There is no doubt that the media were invasive to Diana, but I also believe she played them at times--it was a give and take. Maybe if I were a "feminist" I would be more inclined to agree with this observation.
There is some fascinating history in regards to past Princes of Wales, their behaviours and relationships, in particular that of George IV and Princess Caroline of Brunswick. Ms. Campbell points out amazing similarities between Caroline and Diana, and for that alone this book is worth delving into. Although I am reasonably well-versed in the recent past and current happenings of the House of Windsor, what I read was news to me, and sheds some light on the Royal Family, Prince Charles, and a marriage that was, unfortunately, doomed from the start.

Book Description
This compelling collection of correspondence between a father and a son documents the history of eighteenth-century America through the intimate story of a family and the journey from boyhood to political prominence of its most illustrious member, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the only Roman Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Beginning in the late 1740s, when "Papa" (Charles Carroll of Annapolis) sent "Charley" (Charles Carroll of Carrollton) away from his native Maryland to be educated in Europe, the letters present a new perspective on colonial and Revolutionary America as the lived experience of Roman Catholics, whose defiant adherence to their faith denied them the civil rights and guarantees--including the right to hold office and to vote--that their Protestant counterparts enjoyed. This context accentuates the drama of Charley's rise to power during the Revolution, the necessity of the political and economic compromises he felt compelled to make, and the ultimately tragic personal price exacted by his success. Bringing the Carroll's public and private lives sharply into focus, these volumes present the past in its fullest human dimensions.
Customer Reviews:
A great book, very informative!.......2002-01-15
Bert does not fit the typical "stereotype" I'm sure many people have. He's not gay for one thing. Most cross-dressers aren't, but there is so little information in the "real world". This book is a breath of fresh air. I highly recommend it for married couples dealing with these issues. Bert is basically your average guy, except for the fact he likes wearing dresses!
