Michael Marquardt, defines action learning "is both a process and a powerful program that involves a small group of people solving real problems while at the same time focusing on what they are learning and how their learning can benefit each group member and the organization as a whole." The benefits of action learning include shared learning through all levels and areas of an organization, greater self-awareness and self-confidence for all involved because of their new insights and feedback interaction, improvement of their ability to ask better questions and to be more reflective, and improved communication and collaboration enterprise-wide.

How do task forces and quality circles differ from action learning groups? First, [they] tend to focus on the specific problem of task to be addressed rather than on identifying the organization wide, environmental, systemic elements in which the problem resides, and which also be affected if lasting change is to take place...Second, [task forces and quality circles] generally do not have the power or the expectation of taking action...Third [they] are charged with addressing a problem or improving a product or procedure; any learning that occurs is incidental." Marquardt suggests that action learning programs are built around six interactive components: a problem, the group, the questioning and reflection process, the commitment to taking action, the commitment to learning, and the facilitator. It is important to add, a "commitment to action" includes both identifying a given problem's causes and correcting it, and, then ensuring that the problem does occur again.

I wholly agree with Marquardt that each problem offers a valuable learning opportunity and important lessons can be learned from it. To Marquardt, problem solving and learning are not only related but interdependent. Albert Einstein is credited with the observation that insanity is doing the same thing the same way and then expecting different results.

As Marquardt explains in Chapter Thirteen, however, no all problems can be solved by action learning. For example, problems which are "unimportant, too simple, or too small...not real to the organization...beyond the authority or scope of responsibility of the given group...too large and complex...[and/or]offering little opportunity for learning or applying learning." Marquardt identifies ten of what he calls "pitfalls" in this chapter, any one of which can weaken action learning and make it less effective and less powerful. It is imperative to be fully aware of these perils before embarking on an action learning program.

For which organizations will action learning be of greatest value? Marquardt wrote his book for those which seek to simultaneously accomplish five critically important functions: "solving complex and key problems, developing leaders, creating the foundations for a learning organization, building self-directed and high-performing teams, and enhancing personal development and learning." Ultimately, decision-makers must develop action learning programs which work best for them...and that will not be easy. Marquardt explains how to do that and thereby makes ultimate success somewhat easier to achieve.

Action Learning in Action Action learning has been around since the 1930s, but it can be used to improve organizations today. Michael J. Marquardt shows how. Basically, four to eight people work together to solve a problem, reflect on what they learn as they proceed and then implement their solution. Marquardt offers a clear step-by-step process and a few case histories. His focus on the original methodology may be a little heavy, but he aims to distinguish action-learning groups from multi-problem-oriented teams and work groups. The book is well organized, but if you already know about team building, leadership development and learning organizations, you'll be walking on familiar ground. That's why we at getAbstract.com recommend this book either to those who are so immersed in group learning that they find new nuance in everything in the field, or to those who are fresh to the subject, who will benefit particularly from the helpful charts, lists and illustrations.

This book is a spectacular example of the finest kind of educational writing. Mr. Marquardt shows very clearly, how exactly action learning works, how it is in action. It truly shows the transformation of problems and people for world-class organizational learning. I'd recommend reading this book.

Yea, another magical treat from Don!.......1999-01-09

This is yet another wonderful collection of even more wonderful short stories by Don Webb. These stories range from fantasy to cut-up to sci-fi to daily life/slipstream to other things ect. all with an overwhelming sense of wonder that I ve hitherto never encountered. But, these "tales of wonder and fantasy and such" these titles are no good! For this book is filled with a personal element that underlies every story. To me reading this felt like finding some secret treasure with each tale. Like some hidden toy long forgotten. Anyhoot these stories will not only set your spirit aflame with 'wonder' but with merriment too! As each story(almost) has something that made 'me lips smile and 'me eyes brighten. You'll probablly learn some new words too, like widdershins(rotating counter clockwise) and thyros(a staff/stick topped with a pinecone or grapes). So smile if you like but, you don't have to take my word for it ... buy this and read it fer yourself!

Who said history was boring? Well, they apparently haven't read this book. McQueen tells stories of Kentuckians who made life a litte more interesting and were sometimes challenged by reality. McQueen has you walking down memory lane of your own hometowns peculiar folk. This should be at the top of any history lovers list of must read.

If you are a Kentuckian, this should be required reading. If you are not a Kentuckian, read it anyway; it is one of the most interesting collection of people you'll ever read about. If nonfiction is your cup of tea, take a long swallow of this fascinating tome.

The election to Parliament of Lady Astor in 1919........2004-07-18

Anyone knowing the history of Winston Churchill visualizes the confrontations he had with Lady Astor. The author includes one in her book about poison. Another one has Winston being drunk, and Lady Astor confronting him and he responding Yes I am drunk, but tomorrow I shall be sober and you shall still be ugly. I wanted to know a little more about Lady Astor and this book gave me a brief insight into her. It was an average read, and I commend the author on writing something original. In this age where we have three or four books coming out about Benjamin Franklin, it is refreshing to have a book about an original subject like the 1919 election of Lady Astor.
This book is dry in places because the author focuses on the use of language in the election of Lady Astor. It is rather a short book, so she should have just concentrated on the election and detailed more of the aftermath of the election and the rise of Nancy Astor. Again, the author has done a good job of detailing the rise of this remarkable woman.

A fine read, with a worthy conclusion........1999-09-15

Reads like a good novel, but is flush with enough references and footnotes to make even the snobbiest of academics smile. A fascinating women, as told by another great woman--my mom.

An ugly American and a boastful mass murderer.......2007-08-22

A book written by and about an evil man, and one with no remorse for the multiple murders for which he is responsible. A blowhard who glorifies the killing of thousands of people in foreign countries due directly to him and his role as intelligence agent and director, particularly in Latin America. A person who tries to justify his acts with the Nuremberg defense of having acted under orders and for the sake of US national security, but who doesn't show any evidence of current benefit from these crimes against humanity. And yet he belatedly seeks to falsely minimize the numbers, perhaps for fear of these crimes coming home to haunt (see his interview in the 2007 film "The War On Democracy").

A man who was on trial for his crimes when pardoned, and who should as a criminal not be entitled to profit from his crimes and receive any profit from this book or any other related revenue source.

Read this book at a library - do not give money for it - and then find Elie Wiesel's "Night" or Victor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" for comparison. Note the differences in approach: Wiesel and Frankl remained humble about their lives and yet continue to do good in the world; Clarridge, who would think those two naive, is both supremely boastful and blind to the real damage he has caused to the fabric of the world. For shame. If we truly lived up to our values, a man like this would not be getting his 30 pieces of silver in retirement but would be locked up with the key thrown away for the rest of his natural life.

This book is a relatively boring account of a CIA agent's career. The author egotistical and conceited, and his description of the CIA is rather superficial. For the most part he does not delve into the intricacies of the nature of his assignments (this could be for security reasons).

A true American patriot.......2004-02-19

This was a very good book about a good man who got jilted by a system that was skewed to the left. This is a great book to read in these times due to the fact that the times could somewhat be compared. He should be a model for all Americans that to fight a menace such as terrorism or Communism you have to take the fight to them.

A top rate spy and patriot who was sold out by politics........2001-01-28

A spy can only be a spy when he can spy effectively. I worked in NSA and Naval Intelligence for several years and I can certify that Dewey saw the transition from what once was an effective and respected clandestine service in the CIA to a time when being a spy was equal to being subhuman. American culture changed and the notion of secrecy and intelligence changed. The injection of "ACCOUNTABILITY" virtually eliminated America's espianage capabilities. Dewey knew his job probably better than anyone in the CIA. This book offers up the true to life dynamics that reverberate within the halls of the American intelligence community and in the life of a real spy. Just like in other large organizations, when something goes wrong somebody has to take the fall. Dewey, Oliver North and many others were duped by the Reagan administration but Dewey remained a patriot throughout it all. Espianiage, wars, insurgency and counterinsurgency are at best messy operations but are sometimes necessary to achieve an end. This book is a must read for anyone serious about understanding the world of intelligence and espianage. Dewey was truly a spy for all seasons.

Good Guy in a Very Bad System.......2000-04-08

Dewey was a Division Chief when I was a junior case officer, and I continue to admire him. His pocket handkerchiefs were amazing-you could parachute from a plane with one in an emergency. Dewey's bottom line is clear: he concludes that "the Clandestine Services (sic) is finished as a really effective intelligence service." He has other worthwhile insights, ranging from the inadequacy of the information reaching CIA analysts from open sources (e.g. Nepal), to the "wog factor" dominating CIA analytical assessments (e.g. Pakistan will never attack India), to the sterile and politically-safe approaches to intelligence by the leadership of NSA and the some of the military intelligence services. My bottom line on Dewey is also clear: he was typical of the case officer talent pool, he tried very hard, and the system still failed. He was a good person in a very bad system.
