An OK Introduction.......2007-01-08

When I first read this book I was graduate student in adult education, taking a course in adult career counseling. Compared to the highly prescriptive, formalized, and test-based/type-based approaches that still dominate the career counseling field; this book was an eye-opener. Cochran lays out a detailed narrative approach to career counseling that requires no personality tests or career-matching to personality type. He was the first career counseling "expert" that I came across who was prepared to completely get away from Holland Codes and Myers-Briggs Types and their ilk.

But... If you are seriously interested in narrative counseling approaches, or are already familiar with narrative theory and therapy, you will probably quickly realize that Cochran has simply substituted his own "orthodoxy" for the prevailing model. Cochran's idea of narrative still uses tests (albeit card sorts etc. rather than type-testing) and still follows a formal seven step process.

For the career counselor looking for a way to break free from personality testing, or for the counselor trying to pitch a newer approach within a rigidly structured institutional setting, this book is "short and sweet" and tells you exactly how to do it. For counselors further along on the postmodern counseling path, (i.e. Solution-Focused Therapy etc.) this book will probably seem like a step backwards.

The book is written for carer counselors, and not for individuals seeking career guidance.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis is a partial analysis of the Naval Space Command statistical orbit determination algorithms. Through a process called Differential Correction, data from space surveillance radar observation stations is synthesized with previously accumulated element sets to maintain accurate orbital object position information. Differential Correction is a nonlinear least squares process employing statistical techniques to minimize the residual measurement error thereby increasing relative position information accuracy. This study focuses specifically on the algorithmic methods of solution to the systems of normal equations generated by the Differential Correction process. A comparison and analysis of the present Naval Space Command method and the singular value decomposition method is presented. Algorithmic constructions are presented for both methods and problematic areas are highlighted. The principal focus herein is to demonstrate the benefit of singular value decomposition when attempting to solve systems of equations whose coefficient matrices are dense and nearly singular. These results generalize to commonly employed normal equation solution algorithms and are intended for further study and possible incorporation by Naval Space Command as part of future modernization plans.

How did this get published?????.......2006-08-03

OK- to answer my own question, the ONLY reason this was published was as a personal favor or as serious ***-kissing. As far as chick lit goes (they are clearly going for that audience by the cover of this book), publishers need to realize that we won't read and like just anything. I laughed out loud hafter finishing the book where someone commented about "loving the sex scenes". Yes- maybe if I was 13 and had never read one before. But they are so sparse and pathetic, they are hardly worth mentioning. The entire basis of the book is on a reality TV show, which most chick lit readers are probably familiar with. The whole show made no sense (contestants don't live together? Cameras leave the lovebirds ALONE after they film dinner? People go on a yacht and aren't filmed most of the time? HELLO!), making the plotline flimsy at best. Character development is weak, and I really didn't care what happened to anyone. Totally predicatble- not one surprise throughout. The only reason I finished the book was that I belived it had to get better at some point- no such luck. Don't buy this book- get it from the library if you have to see for yourself how bad it truly is. It's certainly in no danger of having a waiting list...

I picked up this book based on the background of the author...afterall, he's built quite an empire at Kleiner-Perkins and obviously has experience and intelligence. Let's chalk this one up to a fun write for him perhaps detailing something he'd like to do in real life but would be too embarrassed in the final analysis.

I didn't find the situations believable at all. Here's a bunch of gold-diggers who could find themselves knee deep in cash and society by sticking to their plan...that is, romancing and seducing the rich guy. But they change their minds at a moments notice and don't seem to think about the consequences before diving into kinky stuff or exposing their actual sexual tendancies.

Frankly, I would have expected more from a guy such as Perkins with help from Steele...

I would never have expected Tom [perkins to have written a book such as this one. Its the story of a guy, like him, who gets a letter from a reality show wanting him to be the focus of a reality series where he has to choose from several hot women and marry one at the end. The ending of this book has a nice twist to it. This is a book to buy at the airport just beofre you jump on the plane, or a book to bring to your summer house with you. An entertaining read all the way thru.

This is a fine collection of moving and often funny essays growing out of the author's trials and triumphs on a farm in the hills east of Atlanta, Georgia. More than the usual "back to the earth" escapade, author Russell created a working, livable farm out of some lovely wooded acreage and an old farmhouse that she had moved onto the property. The story of that move, with its encounters with narrow bridges, tree limbs, and school children dismissed from class to watch the spectacle, is typical of the book's essays: a wonderful eye for detail, and a humorous but respectful feel for the people who inhabited this adventure. Best moments include her discovery of the differences between cows and horses--a fall-down funny episode--and her depictions of the creatures (including people, of course) and the natural scene of her beloved corner of rural Georgia. It is no "stretch" to compare her writing with that of Thoreau.

Robert Rice Reynolds (1884-1963), U.S. senator from North Carolina from 1933 to 1945, was one of the most eccentric politicians in American history. His travels, his five marriages, his public faux pas, and his flamboyant campaigns provided years of amusement for his constituents. This political biography rescues Reynolds from his cartoon-character reputation, however, by explaining his political appeal and highlighting his genuine contributions without overlooking his flaws.

Julian Pleasants argues that Reynolds must be understood in the context of Depression-era North Carolina. He capitalized on the discontent of the poverty-stricken lower class by campaigning in tattered clothes while driving a ramshackle Model T—a sharp contrast to his wealthy, chauffeur-driven opponent, incumbent senator Cam Morrison. In office, Reynolds supported Roosevelt's New Deal. Although he was not pro-Nazi, his isolationist stance and his association with virulent right-wingers enraged his constituents and ultimately led to his withdrawal from politics.

Pleasants reveals Reynolds to be a showman of the first order, a skilled practitioner of class politics, and a unique southern politician—the only one who favored the New Deal while advocating isolationist views.
