2 out of 5 stars Not the best value for me money,.......2006-02-28

This book has some good activities but was terribly repetitive. I have read a lot of team building and experimental learning books and thought, I must have read this before. Unfortunately it was the book constantly repeating itself. This book has the same sections repeated several times word for word. It was almost as if it was thrown together in a hurry just to meet a deadline. Needless to say, I didn't think it was worth the money.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2003-09-04

The Book on Raccoon Circles holds an amazing wealth of ideas, games and teambuilding activities using one of the simplest pieces of equipment available. I am so grateful to Dr. Jim Cain for gathering all of his (and others') Raccoon Circle material into one incredibly useful book. Raccoon Circles are an essential tool in adventure/teambuilding programs and this book is a great resource for teachers, professionals, camp counselors, and anyone else who desires to build team and community in a group. Not only are there instructions for specific activities/initiatives, but Dr. Cain includes very uselful sections on facilitation and using symbolism in teambuilding.

          Book Description

Since humans first looked towards the heavens, they have attempted to predict and explain the motions of the sun, moon, and planets. This book describes the theories of planetary motion that have been developed through the ages, from the homocentric spheres of Eudoxus to Einstein's general theory of relativity. It emphasizes the interaction between progress in astronomy and in mathematics, demonstrating how the two have been inextricably linked since Babylonian times.

          Book Description

In this fascinating book, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist muses on various aspects of biochemistry, explaining the chemical basis for many biological phenomena. Drawing on his own experiences as well as on colorful anecdotes about the work of other scientists, Bloch presents a new way of looking at the world and a revealing glimpse into the ways that scientific discoveries are made and problems are solved.

5 out of 5 stars the world, as a conglomeration of chemical substances.......2004-12-04

This is a wonderful tour of a discipline that has been dismissed as far less sexy (less "ultimate") than cosmology or nanotechnology: the realm of biochemistry. Bloch sets out to change the impression of chemistry as a dull discipline - with great success.

The story of biochemistry, as he tells it, is full of riddles and surprises. It began in 1897, when Eduard Buchner ground up yeast cell with sand, plugged them into a bottle, and woke up to find the cork had popped out during the night. Seemingly so banal, this discovery overturned the "vitalist" notion of the processes of life, that they could operate solely in intact, living cells. It proved, instead, that cell physiology could be studied as purely chemical reactions. The next 50 years, which Bloch describes as the Golden Age of biochem, witnessed the discovery of enzymes and other molecules behine innumerable chemical processes. And the methods that scientists used were similar to those of Buchner: grind up cells to free their chemical constituents, and then attempt to predict their behavior under a variety of conditions.

Among the many notable repercussions of these experiments was the development of the science of nutrition - by isolating, purifying, and uncovering the molecular structure of amino acids, fatty acids, and vitamins. Once identified, researchers could experiment to find what combination led to better health.

But Bloch doesn't stop with these, and many similar, observations. In a series of delightful extrapolations, he explains why domestic cats need to hunt (they can't synthesize the amino acid taurine, so must find it in the meat of animals who can); how dark latin venetians used soap to bleach their hair blond (a hydrogen peroxide reaction that sunlight enabled); or the reasons that Amerindians ground corn meal on limestone (they needed a certain chemical added to corn to avoid developing bari bari).

Bloch also offers glimpses into the unknown, areas that are not yet explained but hold promising applications. The list is so long that the book must be read: they include the potential uses of thalidomide, insect secretions that might protect us, and the like. It is truly dazzling. What you get is a personal portrait of a vital field that the author, a Harvard Nobel Laureate, helped to create. The writing is also clear and vivid, never dry.

          Warmly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I wish there were more books like this!.......2000-01-09

A real treat & unfortunately rare. I wish there were more books that focused on biochemistry (& chemistry) in such a manner. I very much hope that this author produces more of this delightful style of scientific writing... inquiring minds really do want to know. I thank the author for writing this book--I enjoyed it immensely, & very much appreciate it having been written.

Malcolm X's political evolution after he left the Nation of Islam. Analyzes the conflicts that resulted in Malcolm's being driven out of the Nation, his views on how to combat anti-Black discrimination, and how, as he put it, to "internationalize" the struggle.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2006-06-23

I agree that this is the best book on Malcolm X and the evolution of his thought and action in the last year of his life. Breitman does well to faithfully draw out, including the contradictions Malcolm was working through, the pathways Malcolm was pursuing... his aims, his objectives, his goals... Breitman gives good context, clearly debunks myths and obfuscations and tackles common attacks that were levied against Malcolm in the year before and after his murder. Should be read hand in hand with Malcolm X Speaks... pretty much essential if you care at all about anything really.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Helps to Really Understand Malcolm.......2005-12-22

I, like the author, believe that the Autobiography of Malcolm X left out crucial elements to understanding Malcolm's life and sentiments because it did not cover his life to the last day. This book actually looks at Malcolm's life in three separate stages: his life up until and including being a Nation of Islam spokesperson, his transition period while he was breaking with the Nation of Islam and shortly thereafter, and the path he was setting for himself as he was killed.

This book aims to prove that Malcolm was setting an anti-imperialist path, and internationalist path, an anti-capitalist path, a truly revolutionary and truly dangerous (for the ruling classes) path.

I think the book proves it, and I respect Malcolm all the more for it.

This book also contains criticisms of Malcolm by various people, notably some liberals, and so it's good to get an idea of where people stood, who was really afraid of Malcolm and what he was really starting to represent.

            5 out of 5 stars Great malcolm.......2004-07-03

This is a great book for the period of time in Malcolm's life that might be the least covered. Not to long of a read, but full of information not readily available when looking for Malcolm.

It dispels the idea of Malcolm just being a racist anti Semite, how he was portrayed by the media during and after his life, but installs the belief that he was a revolutionary fighting for the human rights of all, and nothing could more truthful.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Malcolm In His Last Year.......2002-07-19

This excellent little book traces the evolution of the thought and action of Malcolm X in the last eleven months of his life.Malcolm rejected the anti-Semitism and anti-woman policies of the Nation of Islam, and its refusal to involve itself in the civil rights movement. He continued to more and more place the Black struggle in this country in the world context : in the context of the struggle of the workers and farmers in Asia , Africa, and Latin America against imperialism, Yanki imperialism in the first place. He continued to expose the role of the Democratic Party to fool the masses of working people into thinking that we have a friend among our oppressors and exploiters. More and more, he spoke out against capitialism as the cause of racism and described himself unabashedly as pro-socialist.He spoke of the Chinese, Vietnamese, and Cuban revolutions as examples of what we working people must do HERE for the future of all humanity. The author is no academic ' observer'; he covered Malcolm's evolution for The Militant newspaper, the only place Malcolm's speeches were published in full and undistorted after he left the Nation of Islam. This book is an excellent companion volume to read alongside Malcolm's actual speeches, also published by Pathfinder Press.

5 out of 5 stars Malcolm in action.......2002-07-19

I was surprised when I read this book. It gives Malcolm X's speech announcing his political program for fighting for Black control of the black community and Justice. I didnt know what that was before I read it. I read the talk Malcolm gave introducing the program and he talks about how he was supposed to bring Che Guevara up to the meeting, but Che couldn't make it. Heavy Stuff. Breitman is pretty good at defending Malcolm X against critics and showing what the man stood for without imposing his own views on him. We need to see how Malcolm X was in action to get a better idea how we can advance the struggle.

              Book Description

These original contributions by philosophers and historians of science discuss a range of issues pertaining to the testing of hypotheses in modern physics by observation and experiment.

Chapters by Lawrence Sklar, Dudley Shapere, Richard Boyd, R. C. Jeffrey, Peter Achinstein, and Ronald Laymon explore general philosophical themes with applications to modern physics and astrophysics. The themes include the nature of the hypothetico-deductive method, the concept of observation and the validity of the theoretical-observation distinction, the probabilistic basis of confirmation, and the testing of idealizations and approximations.

The remaining four chapters focus on the history of particular twentieth-century experiments, the instruments and techniques utilized, and the hypotheses they were designed to test. Peter Galison reviews the development of the bubble chamber; Roger Stuewer recounts a sharp dispute between physicists in Cambridge and Vienna over the interpretation of artificial disintegration experiments; John Rigden provides a history of the magnetic resonance method; and Geoffrey Joseph suggests a statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics that can be used to interpret the Stern-Gerlach and double-slit experiments.

This book inaugurates the series, Studies from the Johns Hopkins Center for the History and Philosophy of Science, directed by Peter Achinstein and Owen Hannaway.

                  Book Description

This book, first published in 1983 by Cambridge University Press and now issued for the first time in paperback with a new preface, tells the story of Amilcar Cabral who, as head of PAIGC, Guinea-Bissau's nationalist movement, became one of Africa's foremost revolutionary leaders.

In less than twenty years of active political life, Cabral led Guinea-Bissau's nationalists to the most complete political and military success ever achieved by an African political movement against a colonial power. At the time of his death in 1973, months before Guinea-Bissau became independent, his influence extended well beyond the Lusophone world and Africa. Friends and foes alike admired his political acumen and skills and saw in him a potential leader of a non-aligned movement. His writings have shown him to be a sophisticated analyst of the social, economic, and political factors which have affected and continue to affect the developing world.

At a time when there is a general sense of despondency about the future of Africa, as well as cynicism about its political elites, it is instructive to be reminded that the continent has produced a political leader of Cabral's caliber.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Great Pan-African.......2006-06-02

The book does an excellent job of enlightening readers about the life and achievements of Amilcar Cabral, one of Africa's finest liberation war fighters and leader and thinker. Below are some of the highlights in the book.

Amilcar Lopes Cabral was born in 1924. He was born in the Portuguese colony of Guinea (now Guinea Bissau). He received his education in Lisbon, Portugal and was an agronomic engineer. While studying in Lisbon, he founded student movements dedicated to African nationalism.

He returned home in the 1950s, and began forming independence movements on the continent. He was instrumental in the formation of the PAIGC (Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde, (African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde). He also worked with Agostino Neto to form a liberation party in Angola, the Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

From 1962, Cabral led the PAIGC in a war of liberation against the Portuguese imperial forces for the independence of Portuguese Guinea and Cape Verde. Over the course of the conflict, the party won land gains, and Cabral was made the de facto leader of large tracks of land in Guinea-Bissau. In 1972, Cabral began to form a People's Assembly in preparation for the country's independent. However, he was assassinated in Conakry in January 1973 before he could see his country's independence. He was assassinated at the hands of Portuguese agents in Conakry, capital of the Republic of Guinea, whose president is Sekou Toure.

The assassination of Amilcar Cabral brought no joy for the Portuguese Army as the guerrilla fighters intensified their struggle. In March 1973, the guerrillas acquired a new weapon namely Stella, ground-to-air missile which effectively neutralized the air superiority of the Portuguese Army. In September 24, in the forests of Madina do Boe, the PAIGC unilaterally declared the independence of Guinea-Bissau.
Cabral's is one of the greatest pan-African fighters to emerge from the continent. His military successes in Guinea inspired other liberation movements on the continent. He remains one of the greatest Pan African that the African continent has witnessed.

5 out of 5 stars A first rate political biography of Amilcar Cabral........1998-05-16

Patrick Chabal's Amilcar Cabral is a first-rate political biography of Amilcar Cabral. Indeed, this work is the most thorough, critical, and objective source of information and analysis of this important African democratic revolutionary that I have come across. Chabal tells a thorough and compelling story of Cabral and critically analyzes the development of his revolutionary philosophy and political skills within the context of colonial Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau. I highly recommend this work to anyone looking for a rigorous source on this important democratic philosopher and African revolutionary. Chabal also gives us a detailed contextual account of Cape Verde and "Portuguese Guinea," and the PAIGC (African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde) during Cabral's time.

5 out of 5 stars Song of the Winter Wren.......2005-06-20

The book is both honest and beautifully written. It is like a well that one can return to for cool clear water, again and again. One knows that this was the time, this was the place, with no facile or Hollywood embellishments. The sex and the drugs were real, but did not occupy a overly significant place in the over-all context of a wonterful mountain lodge and the brave and cheerful solitude the author chose for two winters, after the crews and guests went home. Mr. Witherspoon loved this place and these people. I defy anyone to find better descriptions of the naturals wonders of the mountains...well maybe those of John Muir.

                  Song of the Winter Wren
                  Review

This is a wonderfully crafted journal of rustic life on a beloved mountaintop. LeConte Lodge is in the heart of the largest wilderness area in the eastern U.S. The author captures the individuality of sunrises, the moodiness inspired by clouds drifting through camp, and the stillness when snow is passable only on snowshoes or skis.

A rhapsodic nature diary, Winter Wren also tells the tale of an overlooked moment in the history of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, when the lodge was changing owners. During the book's three-year span in the 1970's, the Park Service was close to closing the operation. Compliance with new regulations severed some of the lodge's intimacy with the natural surroundings that gave it birth. The lodge stopped being a place where bears hung around waiting for a new bucket of dinner leavings to be dumped in a garbage pit, and where the crew logged dead and down wood to heat the cabins and feed the kitchen stove. The innovations included a helicopter supply operation, a massive propane-fueled cook stove, and a steel firewall between the varnished wood kitchen and dining hall.

The journal of this transition is at turns ironic, funny, sad, and adventurous. We get to know the bears, who predictably became more aggressive and ingenious when the garbage pit was no more, and who suffered violent consequences from the Park Service. We meet the departing owner/manager, a funny and quick-witted hiking enthusiast who had kept the lodge together on the cheap. We are introduced to the arriving owner/investors, who negotiated with the Park Service, and the hippie crew, who thought they could get along without management. We get up close with the mighty horse, Blacky, who dragged logs into camp, hauled loads up and down the mountain, and grazed among the lodge buildings. We also experience the peace and solitude of the two winters the author spent as caretaker, punctuated by visits from family, friends, and strangers.

Winter Wren is frank about the sex, marijuana, and booze the hard-working crew enjoyed in the off-hours, and sardonic about the views of the more conventional folk who hiked up for overnight. The book veers close to infringing on the privacy of several people. This, apparently, is one of the reasons it waited twenty-five years to be published. But the writing is spare, inventive, evocative, and gorgeous. We are fortunate to have Song of the Winter Wren to help us appreciate a beautiful place and relive a curious time.

5 out of 5 stars David Duke is a Nazi liar.......2005-10-03

David Duke, former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, gets upset when you mention his past when questioning his speeches and writings. In virtually everything he writes and speaks, he claims Jews and others hate and oppose him because he tells the truth (quite psychopathic). However Duke's writings and speeches are filled with hundreds of lies, half-truths, distortions, tenuous links, very selective reporting and personal opinion. This has been the art of Nazi propoganda
                  since the 1930s.

It is interesting that the editor has compiled the essays he has so that the reader can understand the impact of David Duke and the Politics of Race--all without one essential voice, that of David Duke himself.

I should know, I am Representative Duke.

How can college students who use this book as text, truly understand the movement that I initiated without hearing from me or at least those who supported me. After all, I did receive over 60 percent of the White vote in Louisiana, I must have had some supporters.

Until my book comes out this fall, My Awakening, My Journey to Racial Understanding, The best book on the subject (or at least the least biased} is Mickey Zatarain's book David Duke, evolution of a Klansman.

More than 20 years have passed since Ellen DeGeneres came out to her mother on a beach in Mississippi. Stunned, Betty DeGeneres could only think of her own disappointed expectations. As she put her arms around her daughter, she was struck by the realization that she would never see Ellen's picture on the engagements page of the Times-Picayune, her local paper. That Ellen would eventually appear on the front page of the Picayune and countless newspapers and magazines around the world is an irony not lost on her mother: "If I had known she was going to grow up to be Ellen DeGeneres," Betty quips, "I would have taken more pictures."

Now the spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign's National Coming Out Project, Betty DeGeneres travels the country explaining how she came to terms with her daughter's sexuality, and how love and acceptance can transform a family. Love, Ellen is an extension of her warm and much-admired public speaking, providing insight into her own life as well as Ellen's and arguing for further education, compassion, and the passage of antidiscrimination laws. --Regina Marler

                  Book Description

"Mom, I'm gay." With three little words, gay sons and daughters can change their parents' lives forever. Twenty years ago, during a walk on a Mississippi beach, Ellen DeGeneres spoke those simple, powerful words to her mother. That emotional moment eventually brought mother and daughter closer than ever, but it was not without a struggle. In Love, Ellen, Betty DeGeneres tells her story: the complicated path to acceptance and the deepening of her friendship with her daughter, the media's scrutiny of their family life, and the painful and often inspiring stories she's heard on the road as the first nongay spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign's National Coming Out Project.

Insightful, universally touching, and uncommonly wise, Love, Ellen is a story of friendship between mother and daughter and a lesson in understanding for all parents and their children.

"Mom, I'm gay." With three little words, gay children can change their parents' lives forever. Yet at the same times it's a chance for those parents to realize nothing, really, has changed at all; same kid, same life, same bond of enduring love.

Twenty years ago, during a walk on a Mississippi beach, Ellen DeGeneres spoke those simple, powerful words to her mother. That emotional moment eventually brought mother and daughter closer than ever, but not without a struggle. Coming from a republican family with conservative values, Betty needed time and education to understand her daughter's homosexuality -- but her ultimate acceptance would set the stage for a far more public coming out, one that would change history.

In Love, Ellen, Betty DeGeneres tells her story; the complicated path to acceptance and the deepening of her friendship with her daughter; the media's scrutiny of their family life; the painful and often inspiring stories she's heard on the road as the first non-gay spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaigns National Coming Out Project.

With a mother's love, clear minded common sense, and hard won wisdom, Betty DeGeneres offers up her own very personal memoir to help parents understand their gay children, and to help sons and daughters who have been rejected by their families feel less alone."Mom, I'm gay." With three little words, gay children can change their parents' lives forever. Yet at the same times it's a chance for those parents to realize nothing, really, has changed at all; same kid, same life, same bond of enduring love.

4 out of 5 stars An Ordinary Family.......2007-06-01

Love Ellen is a beautiful story about the unbreakable bond between mother and daughter. No matter how difficult the challenges faced by either Betty or Ellen their love has always remained strong proven in this eye opening book. So many times we read about celebrities lives and are only shown a small portion of their emotions as though they need to hide their most sensitive side from public view. Love Ellen is an exception to that as we see a side of both women as they truly are: sensitive, emotional and very human. Read for yourself the laughter, sadness and tears as you explore their journey together. You will come away with the realization that no matter how difficult your own struggles there is help for you if only you can open your heart and trust. As you get to know the DeGeneres family you will realize they are just as ordinary as the rest of us. I highly recommend this book for those who need help coming out, loved ones needing a better understanding of homosexuality and that it is not a choice, but rather just another side of many individuals and also to fans of Ellen's who just want to explore who she is and how she made some of the most difficult decisions of her life. This book is a very real account of the understanding we, as human beings who all share so much in this world, need to accept.

What is it like to have a child who is gay? In this book, Betty DeGeneres describes the moment that her daughter Ellen came out to her and admitted the secret which she kept from her mother for 20 years. After learning that her daughter was gay, Betty herself was forced to keep this secret for 20 more years, before Ellen came out to the world. This is a book about a mother's unconditional love for her daughter and about how her daughter's sexual orientation caused a complete change in her life. It is also about Ellen's family and how she went from being a sweet, funny little girl from New Orleans to being one of the top actess/comediennes of our times. It is also about how mother and daughter went from keeping Ellen's homosexuality a secret to how they became activists in the gay/lesbian movement. Throughout the book, the loving and positive spirit of both Ellen and Betty become very evident.
