Book Description
The definitive guide to acing the GARP FRM Exam
The Financial Risk Management Exam (FRM Exam) was developed by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) as a means of establishing an industry standard of minimum professional competence in the field. It is given annually in November for risk professionals who want to earn FRM certification. Authored by renowned financial risk management guru Phillipe Jorion, with the full support of the GARP, this is the definitive instruction manual for those preparing to take the FRM Exam. With the help of questions (and solutions) taken from previous exams, Jorion coaches readers on quantitative methods, capital markets, and market credit, operational, and risk management concepts and assessment techniques. In addition to being the indispensable guide for those aspiring to FRM certification, Financial Risk Manager Handbook will also serve as a valued working reference for risk professionals.
Phillipe Jorion, PhD (Irvine, CA), is a Professor of Finance at the Graduate School of Management at UC Irvine. He has also taught at Columbia University, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and the University of British Columbia.

The Bible of Risk Management.......2003-02-24
Briefly, The essence of this book is Talyor series.
Many authors tried to explan bond with Talyor series, but failed to teaching reader well.
But Jorion complemented that with just 30 pages.
Also the book is writed systematically and well organized.
With this book, I passed FRM exam very high score.
I hope you will be luck enough to read this book.
Hope this book is not representative of GARP's credibility.......2002-11-02
Is there anything less than 1 star? For the errors, this book is not a good value for your money
I agree with other readers. Book is full of errors and irony is most of these errors are not corrected in the downloadable supplement - available on GARP web-site. Agreed the book covers everything within the Body of Knowledge for FRM exam, but many important issues / theories are mentioned / covered in the Handbook because they are part of syllabus but sufficient justice is not done to them. One definately gets this strong feeling that continuity is missing in certain parts of the book and they seem to be just product of simple copy / paste action.
I strongly recommend GARP, Wiley Finance to correct the errors and replace current book with an error free version. Why should the readers pay for the errors? And please let the readers know what actions you are taking and when?
Probably the worst book ever written for a risk mgmt exam..........2002-11-02
Very interesting to see that the most ratings for the Jorion book are either 5 stars or 1 star. I have no idea why one should rate this book with 5 stars - but so many reasons why to rate it with one star:
- it is full of errors
- it is written in a very strange and unstructured fashion
- it is difficult to read
- Explanations are poor
- the layout is horrible (the 80ies do-it-yourself desktop publishing style)
Unfortunately, this is the major book for the FRM exam - some questions will relate to some irrelevant footnotes from the Jorion book for sure.... So a lot of people studying for the exam will continue to waste a lot of time with this book....
Once upon a time, a guy called Phillipe J. wrote a book about Value at Risk at exactly the right moment and became famous. Since then, people like to ask him to hold presentations at conferences (his charts there have the same quality as the charts in the book, his presentation techniques are extremely disappointing), they like to publish his papers (well, probably comparable to the quality of the book), they like to ask him to be on the board for important exams like the FRM exam. Probably this was all too much...
Good Start, but fix the errors!!!.......2001-12-24
The errors in the sample test questions (and answers) need to be fixed! And since the sample test question came from GARP, then GARP should get on the stick and appoint someone in their org to fix 'em.
If the errors had not been present, I'd have given it 5 stars. Book does a good job at taking the reader from start to finish across many different aspects of risk management, and in a very organized way. Not at an extremely quantitative level of depth, but enough so that you know about the big picture (risk-wise) regarding bonds, equities, commodities, credit risk, market risk, ops risk, regs, etc. I encourage all middle office trade analysis personnel to read this book from cover to cover, and to go for the GARP cert.
I will use it as a reference, I'm sure.
DISAPPOINTED.......2001-11-08
It is the worst book I have ever seen.
I passed both CFA and AICPA and familarize with those materials. I still find it difficult to follow. Not clear explaination, contradiction among arguments and wrong answers for the sample questions.
I am very disappointed.

Subversive Workers.......2005-02-08
Counterproductive Work Behavior: Investigations of Actors and Targets by Suzy Fox, Paul E. Spector, Lynne M. Andersson, Karl Aquino, Julian Barling, Robert A. Baron, Rebecca J. Bennett, Robert J. Bies, Susan M. Burroughs, Stale Einarsen, Robert Folger (American Psychological Association, APA) Counterproductive work behavior encompasses a spectrum of actions that harm employees or organizations. These behaviors include bullying, emotional abuse, revenge, retaliation, mobbing, and aggression. They can range from severe, systematic, abusive bullying to milder, ambiguous episodes of workplace incivility. This volume examines the conditions and events in modem organizations that contribute to counterproductive work behavior, as well as the steps organizations might take to combat it. Authors from both North America and Europe analyze the interplay between the environmental factors of the workplace and the personal characteristics of the individual actors and targets of counterproductive work behavior. While these researchers study various aspects of this topic, the book deftly highlights the connections and distinctions in each of the authors' work. The result is an integrative and comprehensive resource that will help stimulate future research in the field.
Excerpt: Since the mid-1990s, there has been an explosion of research interest in behaviors at work that harm employees and organizations. Much of this interest has been stimulated by media attention given to workplace violence, especially that perpetrated by coworkers-for example, shootings within the U.S. Postal Service. Although such violence is quite rare, harmful behavior of lesser severity is commonplace. Research on milder forms has been featured in the national media, where it is often called "desk rage." As editors of this volume, we will call the domain of research counterproductive work behavior (CWB), although not all contributors will agree with this umbrella label.
There recently has been interest among researchers, managers, consultants, and the general public in the widely reported experiences people have of being recipients of harmful behavior at the hands of supervisors, coworkers, and others. These experiences can range from systematic, openly abusive bullying to milder, ambiguous episodes of incivility.
Research concerning counterproductive behavior at work has considered two major classes of factors-individual employee characteristics and characteristics of the workplace. A variety of personality variables, such as conscientiousness, locus of control, narcissism, trait anger and anxiety, and Type A impatience-irritability are among a few of the variables linked to these behaviors. Some researchers have focused on characteristics of the perpetrator, others on the victims, and still others stress the dynamic inter-play between the two. Research has shown that factors related to job stress, including lack of control, excessive workloads, poor relations with coworkers and supervisors, and both intrarole and extrarole (e.g., work-family) conflicts have been linked to harmful behaviors. In addition, fair treatment and workplace justice are important factors.
As the domain matures, more emphasis is being placed on the ramifications for individuals and organizations of these kinds of harmful behaviors, as well as approaches to solving the problems they create. This may prove to be the most controversial aspect of counterproductive work behavior research, because opinions vary widely regarding the locus of accountability (e.g., selection approaches versus organizational change) and the gamut of options available and hurdles facing victims of bullying. Our own work has suggested that a focus on employee perceptions of control and emotions can lead to job design and human resource practices that reduce harmful behavior.
The relative recency of most CWB research has undoubtedly contributed to a rather disjointed literature, with different camps developing different terminology and looking at somewhat different sides of an overlapping set of behaviors. These phenomena have been variously labeled as aggression, antisocial behavior, deviance, delinquency, revenge, retaliation, and our preference, counterproductive work behavior (from the actor perspective), and abuse, bullying, incivility, and mobbing (from the target perspective). The earliest empirical studies in the area of workplace aggression were published in the mid-1970s (Inkson & Simpson, 1975; Spector, 1975). Other early studies included Hollinger and Clark's (1982) paper on organizational deviance; Matthiesen, Raknes, and Rokkum's (1989) study of workplace bullying; Leymann's (1990) seminal work on mobbing; and Morrill and Thomas's (1992) paper on retaliation at work. Most papers in the area have been published since 2000.
The rapid and recent development in parallel of different perspectives has not left sufficient time for integrative work. This issue was noted as one of the most important for the field at an interactive paper session at the 2001 Academy of Management conference in Washington, DC. The session participants found that they were studying overlapping sets of behaviors from somewhat different theoretical perspectives, and tended to focus on distinctions and what is unique in each contribution rather than on connections. A need was felt for substantial integrative work to better tie the work together. Several of the contributors to this book participated in that discussion, which inspired this volume.
The chapters in this book have been written by scholars who have adopted different perspectives, perhaps different vocabularies or labels, and who have studied somewhat different sets of possible causes, consequences, or solutions. We have emphasized the desirability of relating, where feasible, each contributor's work to work done from other perspectives. The goal of this volume is to offer an integrative perspective that highlights connections and distinctions among different people's work, as well as a discussion of how conditions-events in modern organizations contribute to CWB and on things organizations might do to combat it.
As noted earlier, we have chosen the global term of CWB because it seems to encompass the critical features of the domain without excluding the distinct contributions of the various conceptualizations. It is not the intent of this book to force everyone into taking the same perspective or using the same terminology. Rather, its purpose is to build bridges among the different perspectives, showing where they overlap and where they are different. One of the strengths of CWB research is that there are so many different ideas that are contributing to an understanding of the underlying causes and consequences of the various behaviors that we study. Each perspective adds something important to our overall understanding.
This volume is divided into two sections, based on whether the central object of study is the actor or the target of the behavior in question. Section I looks at counterproductive work behavior from the actor perspective. Seven chapters discuss CWB from a variety of theoretical vantage points, focusing often on different precursors and consequences.

Book Description
A unique guide to the application and theory of photothermal spectroscopy.
This book debunks the myth that photothermal spectroscopy is too complicated for practical application to chemical analysis, and demonstrates the advantages this technique has over conventional spectroscopy in facilitating extremely sensitive measurements of optical absorption in homogeneous media. The book covers the subject from the ground up, lists all practical considerations needed to obtain accurate results, and provides a working knowledge of the various methods in use—including photo acoustics and photopyroelectric techniques.
Bringing together a wealth of information that has been scattered throughout the professional literature, Photothermal Spectroscopy Methods for Chemical Analysis covers methods and information that should be known to every analytical chemist, including:
- Descriptions of photothermal spectroscopy using a consistent mathematical language
- Helpful examples from the literature of analytical applications and current research
- Illustrations of all important points, consistent equations, and numerous original figures
- A discussion of laser technology and how it is used to obtain accurate results from extremely small samples of a few molecules
- Everything spectroscopists need to know to construct their own apparatus and use it to conduct successful experiments
- Tips on how to interpret experimental results effectively when using nonlinear processes and in many other situations in photothermal spectroscopy
- Considerations for further study of heterogeneous sample analysis
- Unified nomenclature of the patchwork of terms used by researchers in analytical and physical chemistry, physics, and optical engineering
- Equations that are derived with the aid of a symbolic language processor to ensure correct results
Photothermal spectroscopy has seen major advances since the advent of laser technology twenty-five years ago. It is now possible, using a laser's coherent and powerful output, to obtain extremely sensitive measurements of optical absorption that exceed those of mass spectroscopy by two or three times, and produce accurate results from only a few molecules.
Focusing on samples in homogeneous media, this book provides a unique guide—incorporating theory and application—to all available photothermal spectroscopy techniques for chemical and material analysis. It uses a systematic approach in its comprehensive treatment of the theory, and covers all the necessary background material, from laser optics to fluid dynamics.
This accessible text describes the various processes used to detect thermal perturbation of a sample, ranging from optical excitation to nonlinear processes, and covers all optical principles necessary to understand photothermal spectroscopy. When dealing with hydrodynamic equations that govern energy transfer in the sample matrix, it provides an original impulse-response approach. In addition, the book explains how to construct the apparatus one needs to conduct successful photothermal experiments, since commercial equipment is not available as in conventional spectrophotometry.
Throughout, this book draws on information from a wide range of fields, including analytical spectroscopy, measurement physics, physical optics, and chemical dynamics. Providing clear explanations at every turn, the author demonstrates a complete understanding of the theory and applications as a firm basis for the correct interpretation of experimental results.
For analytical chemists, as well as for students at the graduate level, Photothermal Spectroscopy Methods for Chemical Analysis is an unmatched resource that develops a consistent mathematical basis for signal description, consolidates previous theories, and provides invaluable insight into laser technology.

Book Description
With rich detail and vibrancy, internationally recognized experts across several fields address the evolution and phylogenetic relationships of the Arthropoda . They offer innovative ideas to reevaluate the phylogeny of major arthropod groups, discuss the evolution of arthropod eyes in a phylogenetic context, present a comprehensive overview of appendage loss and regeneration, and address the most recent molecular phylogenetic data, including nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences. They also discuss relationships between insects and crustaceans, offer diverse approaches to evaluate fossil evidence, and evaluate competing hypotheses for arthropod placement in the animal kingdom. "
contributes important new insights into the rapidly changing field of evolutionary relationship within the arthropods, revealing a process in which the traditional view of phylogenetic relationships is being reevaluated and revolutionized.
Fred Schram, as well as the many researchers honouring him with this volume, have markedly advanced our present understanding of arthropod phylogeny, while also providing a template for testing of arthropod relationships as the field advances in years to come." -Christoph D. Schubart, Universität Regensburg and Carsten H. G. Müller, Institut für Biowissenschaften, Universität Rostock, Germany, Systematic Biology, Vol. 55 "It is a highly appropriate collection of thought-provoking and innovative papers
which should do Fred Schram proud.
for anyone who is interested in current views on arthropods and/or crustacean relationships, and who does not shy away from interpretations that deviate strongly from the general views, this is a must-have volume." -Contributions to Zoology "Reassuringly, perhaps, like any other multiauthored volume dealing with aspects of arthropod phylogeny, this one includes plenty that is controversial.
This book
will serve as a marker in the development of ideas of crustacean and arthropod relationships." -Derek E.G. Briggs, Department of Geology and Geophysics, Yale University, The Palaeontology Newsletter, Vol. 61

Seeing Stripes.......2005-09-04
Jay Stailey and Ruby Payne have created a great resource for dealing with a very tough topic. Poverty is all around us. I find it particularly helpful as a pastor to use it as a starter for conversations about poverty. The stories really make you think! I particularly like the discussionquestions at the end of each section. Great book!

Book Description
Reissued in the year of the 150th anniversary of "The Communist Manifesto," this classic biography of Karl Marx is unlike any other account of its subject. Focusing as much on Marx's private life as on his public persona and work, it looks in detail at his relationships with his mother and father, wife and friends, and includes generous quotations from a wide range of correspondence. Blumenberg examines Marx's early writing as a schoolboy and his romantic poetry whilst a student, as well as his exchanges with close friend and collaborator Frederick Engels. In these pages are moving accounts of the privations of Marx's poverty-stricken life in London and the tragedies which struck his family, as well as discussions of his intellectual development and political activity. The book includes virtually every photograph in existence of Marx and his closest associates. A friend wrote of Marx when he was just twenty-four years old: 'Imagine Rousseau, Voltaire, Holbach, Lessing, Heine and Hegel all united in one person, and I say united, not just thrown together--then you've got Dr Marx.' Werner Blumenberg's biography provides an intimate portrait of the making of a complex intellectual whose work was to shape history for the century and a half that followed.
Customer Reviews:
Karl Marx: An Illustrated History.......2004-04-14
Werner Blumenberg's "Karl Marx: An Illustrated History" tells the story of the man behind some of the most radical social and political theories in contemporary history. Typically negatively associated only with Communism, this book offers insight into the reasons for Marx's beliefs through various letters, memoirs and photographs. We meet his family and contemporaries and many of the influencing aspects of his life. Though fairly dry at some points, Blumenberg presents Karl Marx as a scholar, a writer, a husband, a son, a polititian, a philosopher, and most importantly, a man, in "Karl Marx: An Illustrated History".
Focus on the man, not the philosophy.......2004-04-05
From the opening lines, to the powerful conclusion, Blumenburg paints Marx in a light realistic and human light. He stresses that one gains a greater respect for a man's ideas through understanding the man himself. If you are looking for an explanation of Marxism or even some clarification, look elsewhere. But if you seek a portrait of one of the greatest political and socioeconomic thinkers in the last few hundred years, I would highly recommend this book.
I've rarely read a historian that can be both poignant and convincing as a writer, but I must say that Blumenburg writes quite well, and the accompanying photos inserted in the text break up the monotony typically associated with a biography (the book is said to contain "nearly every photo of Marx"). As a reader, one experiences the conflicts Marx had with his father and contemporaries, the excitement of his education and the formation of his ideals, and the utter hopelessness of his economic situation.
The book has been praised for its wide collection of sources and pictures, and on these two points, I would whole-heartedly agree. Actual photocopies of letters from his father, pages of his notebooks, and covers to his works accent the text surrounding these events and a wide range of personal pictures graphically illustrate convincing passages. The most powerful, perhaps, was the final photo of his massive grave site and the tombstone that reads: "Workers of all land, Unite!"
Reading the book fueled my interest in his philosophies, and I'll admit, the book is written for an audience fairly familiar with Marxism itself. Having little working knowledge of Marxism, I'm sure that I was able to fully grasp the workings of Marx's life as well as someone who is learned in this area, but I fully intend to further my reading on this subject. My advice: learn about the philosophy and the man. You will be astounded even more at the individual behind the idea!
The book closes with a detailed chronology, opinions of Marx's work from several prominent figures (i.e. Max Weber, Sigmund Freud, etc.) and a thorough bibliography. Whether it be used as a resource, entertainment, or an in-depth study, "Karl Marx: An Illustrated History" works well. An enjoyable read on all fronts.
Understanding a genius.......2000-05-02
Doesn't matter what ideology you like, follow or accept. Marx is a genius on sociology that made some of the most important works in this matter. This book is a good one but is not the great biography that I was expecting. I didn't see any need for the illustrations too... but is very nice written

Book Description
This is the dramatic and unlikely story of Betty Krawczyk's participation in the struggle between a forestry company and citizens concerned about the fate of the rare ancient forests in British Columbia. Mother, grandmother, and passionate activist, Krawczyk became one of the most visible faces of this struggle, and this book covers her very public (and much publicized) arrest, trial, and sentencing. Despite its serious subject, this book is also energetic, engaging, and funny. Betty's portraits of her mother and relatives in her native Louisiana offer a warm contrast to the drama of the courtroom and the solitude of the prison cell.
Customer Reviews:
Hard to really like.......2006-02-01
As a professional forester, I have some understanding of the issues involved in the story. Ms. Krawczky's trial was very unfair but she did not make the proceedings any easier. The Canadian timber industry is very much different from that in the US but both do have practices that can be ill conceived. I wanted to be able to relate to Ms Krawczky but I thought of several ways her protest could have been much more effective.

If Faulkner/Nelson team isn't embarrassed by this collaboration they must be members of the walking dead. Shameful, hoohah about nothing. Absolutely purposeless. At .01¢ it is over priced. I found my copy at the local library discard bin... now I know why. The genuinely talented Rita Mae Brown did herself a huge disservice letting her name appear on the cover. It only served to make her own self indulgent Martina catharsis "Sudden Death" seem like a mercy killing by associating her name with this garbage.
Self Serving Tabloid Tell-all--A Scorned Wife Pity Party.......2003-02-06
This is an interesting book, self-serving at times. It presents the relationship from Judy's point of view. The best part of the book is the Introduction by Rita Mae Brown--that is absolutely hilarious, but insightful. I kept reading her introduction over and over.
Presenting the printed version of-- THS: Judy Nelson. Judy tells of her childhood, being Maid of Cotton, her first marriage to her rich doctor hubby who was cheating on her with one of his nurses, and how she met Martina. She discusses their years together, but the bulk of the book is on Judy's "galimony" suit against Martina and the ensuing brouhaha and media circus. Judy, as Martina's wife, felt she deserved half of Martina's earnings and property gained during their time together. The book gets rather tiresome at times; Nelson tries very hard to convince the reader to side with her. She really wants your sympathy, so she pours it on thick, carefully omitting or playing down all the expensive gifts and jewelry and perks Martina showered upon her during their relationship.
You can see her point about why she went after Martina after their breakup, yet the book is so one-sided, you ache to hear Martina's side of the story as well. I don't think we will get that chance, as Martina does not care to stoop to Judy's level. For an insightful view of Judy and Martina, and of their galimony battle, read Rita Mae Brown's "Rita Will." It gives a thoughtful, yet hilarious account of Rita's involvement as mediator in the Martina/Judy battle. And Rita's accurate portrait of Judy is a scream--she describes Judy as a person "whose hair gets ruined by a ceiling fan" and other witty, caustic observations that are most unflattering. Rita Mae's insights helps you to understand Judy's book even better. All in all, Judy's book is an interesting read when you don't feel like taxing your brain.
Kept Woman.......2000-04-16
After reading this book what is clear is that Judy Nelson was basically a kept woman. The rich and famous can afford to do that...so long as they are rich and famous and their fragile egos are intact. And why is Nelson complaining? For 6 years she had an intimate relationship with a celebrity and lived a lavish lifestyle. But like many relationships it came to a abrupt end when Navratilova simply moved on to another girlfriend. That's life Nelson and it happens every day. Poetic justice for Nelson, who cheated on her husband Ed. Navratilova had an extended fling with Nelson and Nelson thought it was love.
Superb, a literary must.......1997-12-16
This was a wonderful book. It gives insight not only to gay/lesbian relationships but all relationships. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever been in love and then lost that love!
