Good book for intermediate level.......2000-02-04

The book, though terse and short, is brilliant for a quick tour through the fixed income aspects of bonds, swaps and derivative instruments.

I would have liked more detail on FRNs and Swaps with some practical examples of real FRNs with Interest swaps. An area which many books fail to address. Also the book should have put more emphasis on the mark-to-market of these instruments.

Overall, a good supplemental book.

Perspectives on Learning Organizations.......2002-07-19

As far as I can see it is a book all about different perspectives, a book that adds on to the list of books that focus on the theoretical and/or philosophical sides of learning organizations. As such it is a good book, with contributions from 40 acknowledged authors/researchers.
The book is built up around four parts:
- Guiding ideas
- Theories/Methods/Processes
- Infrastructure
- Arenas of Practice
The book is packed with lots of good ideas that may form a base for further exploration in the field. Most of it is well edited, even though there is some extra "fluff" in some of the articles.
It is a good introduction to "learning organizations", but I will hesitate to call it a "how-to"-book . . . .

strong collection of essays.......2001-12-13

I've had to read a slew of leadership books for my doctorate -- as for a collection of thoughtful essays, this is one of the best. It's well organized, well laid out and has almost every major thinker represented. It's got theoretical parts, practical parts and questions for down the road. The essays span all types of learning organizations: schools, hospitals, companies, etc... It's a bit long, but if you take it piece by piece, this is a very enjoyable and informative collection. Highly recommended and well-conceived.

What is a learning organization? What are the principles upon which a learning organization is built? What is needed to develop a culture that embraces these principles? In 1974 in a remote region of Ethiopia, Donald Johanson, then one of America's most promising young paleoanthropologists, discovered "Lucy", the oldest, best preserved skeleton of any erect-walking human ever found. This discovery prompted a complete reevaluation of previous evidence for human origins.

In the years since this dramatic discovery Johanson has continued to scour East Africa's Great rift Valley for the earliest evidence of human origins. In 1975 this team unearthed the "First Family", an unparalleled fossil assemblage of 13 individuals dating back to 3.2 million years ago; and in 1986 at the Rift's most famous location, Olduvai Gorge, this same team discovered a 1.8 million-year-old partial adult skeleton that necessitated a reassessment of the earliest members of our own genus Homo.

This is an excellent text for those interested in paleoanthropology and human evolution in general. It is superbly illustrated and the activities of the paleontologist explained in terms that are understandable to the informed layman and provide a fascinating insight into this field.

Beautiful Book on How We Came to Be.......2007-02-08

The title of this book is at the same time both informative and misleading.

It's misleading because it actually goes back millions of years before Lucy walked the earth. And its discussion on language is quite minimal. So if you are looking for a book on language or Lucy, you might want to look elsewhere.

On the other hand, if you're not being quite this picky, this is an excellent overview of the development of humankind. Dr. Johanson was on the team that discovered Lucy, and since this is the second edition of the book which now goes back further than Lucy changing the name might not have made sense.

The book goes back further because new findings in the fossil record now go back to some 7 million years (Lucy is 3.5 millian years old).

The problems with printing any book like this are clearly illustrated by the 'Kennewick Man.' The previous edition of this book was published in 1996. A very short while later, the 'Kennewick Man' was discovered in Washington State that may completely alter the way we think the Americas were populated. This individual died about 9,400 years ago and reconstruction of his appearance from the skull remains has him looking a lot like Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart. Perhaps this lends credulence to European travellers also reaching the Americas as well as Asians coming over the Siberian Land Bridge.

This is a fascinating book, profusely illustrated with excellent photographs of fossils and commentary explaining what these fossils show.

I just bought the revised edition and also had the earlier edition so the updates were well needed since there's been a lot more discoveries since the first edition. The photographs are the best I have come across in a long time it's like being at the site and looking at them in there actual size. Great book overall and very informative.

The explanation of the evolution of humankind in East Africa is a great message and here the photographs of the fossils are fascinating and illuminating.

This is an excellent book, which can be used as an encyclopedia for the history, traditional names, and geographical location of the Canadian Native peoples. The author has used numerous primary sources and maps and her style is very readable. Dickason gave also the aboriginal perspective of many events but in a very balanced account. The book can grasp the attention not only to professional historians dealing with Native history but also to all readers who have some general interest in the past of Canada's Amerindians.

Northern people's history.......2003-04-14

Oliva Dickason, the Canadian doyenne of academic Amerindian history, delivers an excellent university introduction textbook to the history of the First Nations of North America, concentrating on those of Canada.

She deals with four periods: the pre-colonial era, the colonial, the 19th & mid-20th century, and the end of 20th century.

Her pre-colonial history is often speculative, since there are no written records, but much can be determined from oral tradition and archeological finds. For instance, the Iroquois confederacy was established shortly before the French landed in the mid-16th century; North America housed a diversity of distinct nations; many Amerindians cultures lived in permanent settlements; west coast nations had developed explicit property rights and had a system of land entitlement.

The colonial era was one of co-operation and alliances between the Ameridians and the Europeans settlers and soldiers. The Europeans brought their wars and diseases with them, while the First Nations brought their wars too. The partnership was equal and the First Nations on the winning side benefitted, at least until the 19th century.

From the 19th century onwards however, White rule has much to answer for. The diseases of the colonial era were brought inadvertently, but not so the 19th century land grab, or the disastrous assimilation attempts of the 20th century.

The end of the 20th century has seen a revival of Amerindian self-government. The First Nations have begun using Western institutions to their advantage. In the 1980's Elijah Harper, then member of Manitoba's provincial parliament, single-handedly, and rather heroically, derailed a Canadian constitutional accord (Lake Meech) which failed to address First Nations concerns. Earlier in the 1970s, the First Nations successfully negotiated with Hydro Quebec and created the precedent that their agreement was needed for development on their lands.

Overall, an excellent reference.

A Great Contribution to Canadian Popular History.......2000-06-15

This book is a wonderful synthesis of Canadian aboriginal history. I was impressed by the author's detailed and well-balanced approach. It is neither a moral fable nor a panegyric of conquerors' exploits, but rather history as it should be told. The only downside is the book's episodic style but that is necessitated by its ambitious goal. Olive Dickason did an especially good job highlighting the different histories of Canada's natives both pre- and post-contact.

So many things in your book made me want to shout "THAT'S IT!" The smell of the formula, the loose stools before the enzymes kicked in, the entire shelf in the kitchen filled with her medicines, the astronomical medical bills, the exhaustion, the depression, the frustration. No one understands except the parent of a chronically ill child what it is really like. Your book does a wonderful job of giving others a glimpse of what our lives are like. I plan to get copies for all my sisters to read. Thank you for taking the time to put it together. I plan to keep you all in my prayers.

Not What I Hoped.......2002-10-04

While I respect the idea of human spirit rising over adversity, I did not find that this book touched me in a way that similiarly themed stories did. Though the book reads easily, I found it to be rather forced at times and somewhat choppy in the story telling. I also found that the authors spent more time celebrating the way THEY overcame the adversity rather than their daughter. Additionally, I did not deeply feel the pain and the anguish that made the rising spirit all the more meaningful. It is an interesting account of the ways in which CF is now being treated and the ways in which everyday people can contribute to the fight. However, if you found this book interesting or want to learn more about the impact of this devestating illness, I beg you to read Frank Deford's "Alex:The Life of A Child". I find that once you've been touched by the spirit of Alex Deford, much else will pale in comparision.

Lo's Story Will Be With Me Always.......2002-09-09

I cried my tears as I read your story. I am still in awe over the ability of the human spirit in adversity. Lo and her family have touched thousands of hearts thru their lives and thru their book, no doubt inspiring countless others to stretch themselves to do something they fear is impossible, or to forge ahead when life seems like "too much to handle". Now, when I catch myself complaining about anything at all, I remember the Deitrichs, and the fact that Lo has to "fight" for every breath she takes. I humbly shift into gratitude for my life and my health, and I send loving thoughts to this and other CF families, and pray that my strength may be equal to theirs if I am ever faced with seemingly insurmountable odds, odds that they live with every single day. Thank you for opening your lives to others.

A Must Read Book!.......2002-08-01

I strongly recommend this book to anyone. Whether or not you have a family member or friend with a terminal illness, this book will touch your heart. A few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting Terry, Don and Lo. They are an amazing family! When they told me about their book, I couldn't wait to get a copy and read it. It took me two days; I couldn't put it down. Our daughter was diagnosed with CF at 9 weeks of age so I could relate to many parts of the book. This book has inspired me to never give up on fighting for this disease and for those who suffer from it. Many thanks to the Detrichs!!

This book was absolutely wonderful for me and my family. My first and only son was diagnosed with CF when he was only 1 week old. He is now 6 months old and is doing wonderful. My husband and I were devastated when he was diagnosed. A friend I work with bought me the book to read. I read it in one day. I laughed and cried throughout the book. I could totally relate to the emotions this family went through. I highly recommend this book to parents or family members of a child with CF. It will reassure you that you aren't alone and that there is still hope for a cure.
