Book Description
People thrive on conflict in most areas of their lives--football games, political debates, legal disputes--yet steer clear from workplace conflicts.
But conflict is actually a healthy way to challenge the existing order and essential to change in the workplace. The real problem is not conflict per se, but managing conflict.
This authoritative manual explains step by step how to design a complete conflict resolution system and develop the skills to implement it. Packed with exercises, case studies, and checklists, the book also supplies:
* an overview of workplace conflict * diagnostic tools for measuring it * techniques for resolving conflict, such as negotiation, labor/management partnerships, third-party dispute resolution, mediation, arbitration, more.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive Resource.......2002-07-28
There are all sorts of opportunities for conflict in the work environment. Personal issues, varying perspectives, separate agendas, labor issues, and mental difficulties. When conflict escalates to violence-from shouting to shooting, it's time to start paying attention to the problem.
Marick Masters is the Executive Director of the Center on Conflict Resolution and Negotiation at the University of Pittsburgh. Robert Albright is also a professor in the field and both have done their share of corporate consulting. They obviously know their topic. The author suggest that conflict occupies thirty percent of a manager's time, so streamlining the process of dealing with conflict-and improving effectiveness-can be a significant value for an employer.
This book is worthwhile as a read-through and as a reference text. Executives, human resource professionals, consultants, and behavioral scientists working in the organizational arena will be delighted with the presentation of the material. It's surprisingly readable and, thanks to some good design, is easy on the eyes. Decent-sized type and open leading are a welcome benefit.
The book is organized into five parts. The first, appropriately, Getting a Handle on Workplace Conflict, has chapters on understanding, diagnosing, and dealing with conflict. The second section explores alternative resolution methods: negotiation, facilitation, mediation, arbitration, and potpourri. Lots of understandings here. Part 3, Special Topics, gets into Confronting Workplace Violence, EEO Disputes, Unions, and international issues. Part 4 takes the reader through the how-to of establishing an Integrated Conflict Resolution System, Education, and Training. The last section provides a brief map and guide, summarizing the essence of the book.
There are two appendices in this publication. The first gives the solutions to the twenty exercises in the chapters. The other offers a simulation of an EEO Mediation. The source list is a special treasure-a dozen pages of books, journals, web sites, and government publications to open more doors to learning for readers.
Everything you wanted to know in this field-if it's important in the workplace-is between the covers of this book. Certainly recommended for those responsible for keeping conflict at a minimum in any organization.

This Elibron Classics book is a facsimile reprint of a 1894 edition by Macmillan and Co., London.
Book Description
Assuming the existence of a fundamental aether frame and the anisotropy of the one-way speed of light in the Earth frame, two facts supported by theoretical arguments and repeatedly confirmed today by experiment, J. Levy derives a set of space-time transformations that are more general than the Lorentz-Poincaré transformations. The implications for fundamental physics are shown to be far-reaching.
Customer Reviews:
Book reviewed and agreed by Pr J.P. Vigier .......2005-01-17
Relativity theory has enabled physics to take a great step forward. Nevertheless, unlike several of his followers, Einstein was not satisfied with his theory. Let us bear in mind that in a letter sent to his friend Maurice Solovine,1947, he declared: you imagine that deep down inside I regard the work of my life with calm satisfaction, the things are really different. There is not a single concept of which I am convinced that it will stand firm.
The concerns of Einstein are analysed in the book From Galileo to Lorentz and beyond. As demonstrated in the book, conventional relativity fails to answer several fundamental questions. A new theory is proposed which permits to answer the questions unresolved by relativity.
The book has been submitted to Pr Jean Pierre Vigier during his stay in Canada, at the end of the year 2002.
Pr Vigier comented on the manuscript as follows: I am in complete agreement with the views developed in this book, and give a positive assessment to the content.
J.P Vigier, Department of Relativist Gravitation and Cosmology, University of Paris VI
My quick review........2004-12-30
An interesting theory on SR that holds its ground. Simple and comprehensible, as a theory should be. Orthodox relativist say " why the need of a preferred frame if SR predicts observations." I say " why the need of Minkowski diagrams if a preferred frame predicts observations.". Another thing I liked is that he presents many references by other authors. He comments and continues where other authors left off.
A time to tear down, and a time to build up. (Eccles. 3:4).......2004-09-17
A time to tear down and a time to build up (Eccles 3/4)
"From Galileo to Lorentz... and beyond" is a "must read" for
the following reasons.
I have personally participated in and witnessed a physics-forum
discussion of "orthodox" relativity and Mr Levy's theory. As
demonstrated by Mr Levy, orthodox relativity leads to several
paradoxes which can be resolved if one assumes a fundamental
aether frame. Mr Levy cites experimental facts to support his
argument.
In my opinion, his challenge to orthodox relativity alone
makes his book worth reading. However, I recognize that
it is one thing to challenge a theory, and another to replace
it with something new. For this reason, Mr Levy's book has
added value. He goes beyond challenging relativity and
proposes an alternative theory.
Assuming light's constant speed in a privileged reference
frame, given a real physical length contraction and a real
clock-retardation with motion, Mr. Levy's theoretical proposals
reconcile experimental facts and principles of physics thereby
laying the foundation for a new, rational and reasonable physics.
Cautionary note: Mr. Levy's book assumes that the
reader is familiar with conventional relativity, "the relativity
of simultaneity" and the Lorentz-Poincaré Transformations.
In other words, readers should not expect his book to
give a popular, gentle introduction to physics and/or
Einstein's theory of relativity.

Book Description
This monograph presents, from the viewpoint of continuum mechanics, a newly emerging field of irreversible thermodynamics, in which linear irreversible thermodynamics are extended to the nonlinear regime and macroscopic phenomena far removed from equilibrium are studied in a manner consistent with the laws of thermodynamics. The tool to develop this thermodynamic theory of irreversible processes are the generalized thermodynamics, which also extends the classical hydrodynamics of Navier, Stokes and Fourier to nonlinear irreversible processes. On the basis of mathematically rigorous representations of the first and the second law of thermodynamics, phenomenological theory (continuum mechanics) deductions are made from the thermodynamic laws of R. Clausius and Lord Kelvin and by this continuum mechanics theories are formulated for macroscopic irreversible processes occurring far removed from equilibrium. Non-equilibrium thermodynamics are developed for thermodynamic functions.
The macroscopic irreversible processes studied include global irreversible processes as well as local hydrodynamic processes at an arbitrary degree of removal from equilibrium. Applications of the theories cover global irreversible processes, simple flows of non-Newtonian and non-Fourier fluids, shock waves of monatomic and diatomic gases, rarefied gas dynamics, ultrasonic wave absorption and dispersion of monatomic and diatomic gases, electrochemical processes, neural networks of chemical reactors, microflows, etc. Variational principles in irreversible thermodynamics and contact manifolds in thermodynamics are also discussed.'
This monograph, will be of interest to condensed matter physicists, chemical physicists, biophysicists, mechanical and aerospace engineers, and specialists and graduate students in the fields of irreversible thermodynamics and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.

Book Description
Pioneering aviator, blackshirt leader, colonial governor, confidante and heir-apparent to Benito Mussolini, the dashing and charismatic Italo Balbo exemplified the ideals of Fascist Italy during the 1920s and 30s. He earned national notoriety after World War I as a ruthless squadrista whose blackshirt forces crushed socialist and trade union organizations. As Minister of Aviation from 1926 to 1933, he led two internationally heralded mass trans-Atlantic flights. When his aerial armada reached the U. S., Chicago honored him with a Balbo Avenue, New York staged a ticker-tape parade, and President Roosevelt invited him to lunch. As colonial governor from 1933 to 1940, Balbo transformed Libya from backward colony to model Italian province. To many, Italo Balbo seemed to embody a noble vision of Fascism and the New Italy.
Book Description
On sabbatical from his professorship at the University of Pittsburgh, native West Virginian Chuck Kinder (portrayed as Grady Tripp in Michael Chabon’s Wonder Boys and played by Michael Douglas in the film) makes a midlife pilgrimage to his homeland to re-imagine and reconnect with that fabled, fantastic country. Confronting the regrets and heartaches of his past, present, and future, Kinder seeks solace in the funny and raunchy family stories, lies, legends, and history that reside in West Virginia’s haunted hills and the hollows of his memory. But more than anything, Kinder wants to live it up hillbilly style. Immersing himself among the lives of mountaineer characters, both the quick and the dead, the bad-boy author bears holy witness to the triumphs and misdeeds of the loafers and misfits, winos and oddball characters of his homeland. Readers will be astonished by tales of bloody mine wars, outlaws on the run, roadhouse romance, barroom brawlers, beer-joint ballerinas, and a man who calls himself the last mountain dancer. With mothmen, moonshiners, and family feudists, it’s Planet West Virginia. Chuck Kinder's wild-ride rediscovery of his West Virginian roots is sure to quicken all of our hillbilly hearts.
Customer Reviews:
Best Mountain Writer.......2005-04-22
Chuck Kinder's redneck roots have served him well. Last Mountain Dancer, his "meta-memoir," is taken up with his childhood home of West Virginia. Readers are treated to everything from his adolescent years as a bona fide outlaw, pulling armed robberies with a sociopathic father figure named Morris Hacket; to buying all his dear old mother's crocheted comforters from an "artsy-fartsy artiste type" proprietor of a craft store so that his mother, with months of no sales, wouldn't feel "lower than whale bowels on the bottom of the ocean;" to packing a half-dozen brazed possum sandwiches and long necked Budweisers and driving the West Virginia hills with his sister and brother-in-law; to his fascination with a paranoid West Virginia Elvis impersonator named Jessico White, the last mountain dancer of the title; to an impassioned defense of Sid Hatfield, the fabled coal miner's advocate murdered by West Virginian authorities in 1921. The book is stunning both for its honesty and for the force of his prose. Often, Kinder's most beautifully written prose accompanies descriptions of horrible events or the most painful self-discoveries. For example:
"There was absolutely no private mythology left behind what passed for my personality. Not unlike other foolish, floundering middle-aged men, I didn't believe in a thing that seemed to matter. My life had broken down like an old heap on the highway" (Dancer, p. 139).
And then, some two hundred pages later,
"I had begun to fancy myself as one of those uniquely American types who define themselves primarily in the loss and betrayal of themselves and what they love. For Proust (a somewhat similar European type), the only true paradise was a lost paradise, and love was not fully itself until it was lost, until it became memory, became the stuff of story. At its heart, every story is about a lost world... ." (p. 349).
After much soul searching and confronting of his foibles and doomed hopes, he decides to embark on a journey of self-discovery, aware of creating a new fable for himself and of his inconsistency:
"I was deep into my fable of embarkment. I was sipping ice-cold vodka straight like a seasoned hardboiled ironist and vaguely wondering if my upcoming self-proclaimed voyage of self-discovery would be in truth simply another frivolous fiction of self-invention. Steadfastly true at least to my inconstancy, I sat there in the monastery of myself thinking that the only thing I ever knew for sure was what I made up" (p. 381).
There is much to admire and enjoy in this book, written by the purported Grady Trip of "Wonderboy's" fame. Kinder has written three novels that also provide great literary experiences: "Silver Ghost," "Snakehunter," and "Honeymooners" (about his raucus life with Raymond Carver).

Aleksandr Lebed was a man to watch..........2002-07-17
Unfortunately, he was killed in a helicopter crash in Krasnoyarsk, Russia...Spring of 2002.
A man to watch........1997-07-26
Former general Lebed, despite some legitimate
Western concerns about his authoritarianism and
inexperience in international affairs, comes off
in this Rand/USAF study as a not unreasonable
alternative to the political and economic chaos
of post-Soviet Russia.
His early years are sketched in a few words,
leaving many unanswered questions about his
character and early development, but his expressed opinions and political
maneuverings are charted here in a way which
provides some illumination. He seems neither the
Russian Napoleon some fear nor the saintly figure
seen by the simpler Russian voter, but, possibly,
a man with whom the West could do business.
The book is necessarily dated, and doesn't cover
Lebed's dismissal as Yeltsin's national security
advisor, nor his relatively obscure more recent
activities, but is of value nonetheless as scarce
material on a man with whom the West may yet reckon.

David Kopay, A Portrait in Courage.......2007-01-17
This book was a real revalation to me. To read a firsthand account of a gay man's journey, back in the late 1970s, was truly a rare, and positive experience. This was the era when gays were fiinally getting positive public recognition (at least on TV and in the press) other than being labeled "not normal," mentally ill, or other negative call-words. These were the days of gay marches, people "coming out" publicly, and the dawn of a new and positive age for homosexuality. Reading this book was a very
mind-blowing experience. To read, and understand, David Kopay's struggle and coming to terms with his own sexual identity, "coming out" to his parents and family, and the discrimination he experienced in searching for a job in the sports field, truly shows the social climate of the times; and also might show others that the human experience is similar to most people.
Perhaps "straight" people, right-wing Republicans and religious fantaics of the Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell types might gain some insight into the human condition by reading this, and similar, books. Too much time is spent on negativity and extolling people's differences by some groups and people; when there is still homophobia and gay-bashing still going on -- as shown by the sad episode of Matthew Shepherd, not too many years ago.
This book is a must-read for any gay man, also friends and family members of gay persons. The book may just show people that there isn't much difference between people, whatever their race, sexual preferences, or even religious beliefs. Even though I read this book almost twnety years ago, it's message is still strong, and I highly reccomend this book to anyone who has a gay family member, a gay friend, or if you are a gay person reading this.
Timeless and Wonderful.......2005-11-18
You don't need to be a gay man or a football fan to connect with this emotional and enlightening page-turner. Bravo to David Kopay and Perre Deane Young!!!!!!
David Kopay Story.......2001-10-23
This book is of a true hero, David Kopay. What a story of courage and inspiration. If you want to be inspired, read this book. One of the best!!
well-written, gutsy and illuminating.......2000-03-18
This is David Kopay's account of growing up gay back when there were very few books or support groups to turn to, which makes it stand even taller. He describes his experience as a college and professional football player as well as being in a fraternity. I find him candid, readable and likeable. He never asked for any special favours, just the right to live his life his way and do what he knew how to do.
I'm proud that David is a fellow Husky; his name adds honour to the reputation of the University of Washington, both as a hard-nosed athlete who hit like a freight train and as a man of courage. Just about anyone could benefit from reading his book.
The Pioneer of Gay Sports Stories.......2000-02-22
Before Dan Woog's "Jocks," before "The Front Runner," before the whole genre, David Kopay rocked the homophobic world of sports by coming out and telling his story. An amazing personal journey and a great historic account, this is a must-have for your gay library. Not as sexy as you'd think, instead it's a harrowing and touching tale of the first pro football player - the first jock of the 20th century - to come out big time. We all owe this man a lot, but beyond that, this is a compelling story.
