        Book Description

Workers' compensation causes headaches throughout all levels of an organization. Injuries affect production, costs, and morale. Managing Workers' Compensation: A Guide to Injury Reduction and Effective Claim Management lays out - in logical order - management and safety procedures that reduce injuries and the aggravation that follows. The authors cover hiring, training, and managing employees with injury avoidance in mind. They provide a blueprint for dealing with injured employees and their families, and for determining the correct time for the employee to return to work. The book discusses the all-important issues of fraud, modified duty, substance abuse testing and accident investigations. It also provides guidance for managing your organization's safety efforts in a manner that targets workers' compensation cost control as one of its major objectives. In addition to comprehensive coverage of workers' compensation, the book gives you a thorough explanation of additional sources of assistance, including the availability and utility of Internet safety resources, a complete listing of state workers' compensation agencies, and sample checklists that help you evaluate your workplace. Although workers' compensation laws vary from state-to-state, the principles behind the system and the ability of employers to influence their own premiums remain consistent. By gaining a thorough understanding of these principles and implementing proven cost control strategies, you can realize substantial savings. Managing Workers' Compensation: A Guide to Injury Reduction and Effective Claim Management explains the process by which premiums are calculated and shows how you can impact - favorably - the amount your organization pays in premiums.

                    Book Description

The contemporary field of evolutionary developmental biology is still a new subdiscipline of evolutionary biology, but it deals with some very old questions: how shape and form in complex organisms change during evolution. Integral to this subject are developmental genetics and molecular biology, and, increasingly, systematics, paleontology, and population genetics as well. The integration of the latter three subjects into evolutionary developmental biology is still in its early stages, however. A principal aim of this book is to introduce upper-level students and biologists in other disciplines to this field, and to present it within its larger context.

Despite the excitement about "evo-devo," it is a field that still lacks a set of formal principles of the sort that, for example, inform and give shape to population genetics and systematics. The second principal purpose of this book, therefore, is to suggest a useful general framework for thinking about developmental evolution. The book's organizing concept is that of the genetic pathway, the sequence of requisite genetic and molecular activities that underlie a developmental process. From this perspective, the author explores the nature of the genetic, molecular, and selectional events that alter these pathways, yielding developmental change.

The book is organized into three major sections. The first five chapters deal with the history of the field, the data it employs, and basic ideas that inform current research. The next three chapters are devoted to case studies in developmental evolution, starting with examples of currently favored model systems (e.g., Drosophila melanogaster) and building outward. Six subsequent chapters address questions and problems in the field and key questions for the future. Three appendices on specialized topics and a glossary complete the book.

                      Book Description

Evolutionary developmental biology, or ‘evo-devo’, is the study of the relationship between evolution and development. Dealing specifically with the generative mechanisms of organismal form, evo-devo goes straight to the core of the developmental origin of variation, the raw material on which natural selection (and random drift) can work. Evolving Pathways responds to the growing volume of data in this field, and its potential to answer fundamental questions in biology, by bringing together contributions that represent a diversity of approaches. Topics range from developmental genetics to comparative morphology of animals and plants alike, and also include botany and palaeontology, two disciplines for which the potential to be examined from an evo-devo perspective has largely been ignored until now. Researchers and graduate students will find this book a valuable overview of current research as we begin to fill a major gap in our perception of evolutionary change.

                          1 out of 5 stars Underimpressed.......2004-04-02

After reading all of the "rave" reviews from other readers, I must say I couldn't wait to read this book. I read it in one sitting, and I waited for the "laugh outloud" moments, I was ready to giggle. I was only slightly amused. I am from the South and love stories about growing up in the South. We all have our wonderfully eccentric family members that we love to talk about, but I was totally unimpressed with this writer's ability to engage me in the story. It was NOT even close to entertaining.

Being born in the south I can relate to most of this book.I could not stop laughing out loud.Louise Mann is a hillarious auther.Probably the best book I have ever read!

5 out of 5 stars You Don't Have To Be Southern to Love This Book!!!.......2002-01-07

The author, Louise Mann describes her life in the south in the most humorous manner. Just like all of us, you don't hide your crazy relatives you talk about them and are proud of them. She has included herself in a way that you feel you are in her go-cart with her or up that wonderful Shumard oak tree.
Take time out and read this book and you will find it a favorite for life. Remember, we are "Making Memories"!!!

5 out of 5 stars Small town life at its best!.......2001-11-05

Plantation Princess is heartwarming and hilarious. It makes me want to move to a small town and experience first hand the slow pace of life and the unique adventures that pace inspires.

                          5 out of 5 stars Just Amazing.......2001-07-02

The Plantation Princess stories are just amazing! I hope there will be more! Being born and raised in Michigan, ever since my mom read the Uncle Remus stories to me (Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and all the rest) and seeing the movie "Gone With the Wind," I have been wondering about "The South." But then came the days of the movie "Easy Rider," and out came the National Guard "insuring integration," and the graphic pictures of what happened to black people when the "Klu Klux Clan" got to them. "The South" truly was another planet to me. I never even KNEW anyone who had seen "the deep south" (which even sounds like a conspiracy novel) much less gone there myself.

But I've thought about it a lot, wondering if I, a white person, could have done any better had I grown up in those circumstances, wondering how it would have felt to be a child in a world of such strange duality.

So far, only Black Americans have shouldered the burden of "telling." Thank you, Louise Mann, for "breaking rank," obviously you know that only when all races share, will there be interacial healing. You "told" with much compassion for all (and such raucous good humor, I giggled out loud, A LOT!) Please, tell us more stories.

                          May Peace be with you.

                          Book Description

Behind the astonishing success of D-Day was the most sophisticated deception scheme ever devised. Its code name was "Fortitude," and its objective was to persuade the enemy that the long-awaited landings would take place in the Pas-de-Calais and that any attack in Normandy could be safely ignored. The Nazis relied on aerial reconnaissance, wireless intercepts, news from London-based diplomats, and reports from the Abwehr's extensive network of agents to predict the time and place of the Allied offensive, and much of this misinformation was helpfully supplied by Roger Hesketh's team of deception specialists, who coordinated the most complex conjuring trick of the century.

The classified official history of the entire operation, written by Roger Hesketh as Allied counter-intelligence experts were gathering the evidence of what had been accomplished in early 1945, has at last been declassified and released. In Fortitude, the intricate details of this fantastic diversionary scheme are disclosed with the type of immediacy that can only come from first-hand material.

"An outstanding history of the most successful deception campaign in history...a must read." (Alan Gropman, The Washington Times)

"An authentic study, by a fully informed expert, of a subject once deadly secret." (The Times, London)

2 out of 5 stars Story Lost Among Too many Details.......2006-03-29

As a previous reviewer stated, this manuscript was written at war's end as an internal British Government report. I would assume that it was to be studied by future military leaders as a blueprint
for future military campaigns. I was so overwhelmed by all of the facts and details, that I could not find a "story line." Story as well as "character development" are sorely lacking. In fairness to the author, this was written as a "report" not a narrative. Nor
did the author have the benefit of time to gain an overall perspective of the events described. I would recommend that any prospective readers look for a different source!

                          2 out of 5 stars VERY dry.......2002-12-03

I'm a big fan of this topic area, yet had to force myself to keep reading this one until I finally gave up. The problem is that the author writes this as really an "after-action report" to his superiors, so the prose is extremely heavy on orginizational details. Just to give you a flavor, here are passages from two pages chosen at random:
(1, p. 91): "It now became necessary to provide FUSAG with armies of its own. This wa done on the one hand by fictitiously detaching the First Canadian Army from 21 Army Group and putting it under the command of FUSAG"
(2, p. 275):"Under the new scheme, Three would be at the head, 7(2) would be called in to act as freelance, taking the place of Seven in that respect. The territory of 7 (4) would be enlarged to include Kent as well as Sussex, thus filling the gap caused by 7 (2)'s departure. 7(7) and 3(3) would continue as before, the former in the Eastern counties and the latter in Scotland".

I hope you get my point - authoritative and detailed, but not exactly a page-turner.

4 out of 5 stars Inside account and thorough but a little dry.......2002-10-20

For WWII buffs this book will prove to be invaluable. The level of detail (specifically quotes from actually documents and interviews with captured German generals)will intrigue anyone who has ever wondered how we managed to get a foot hold in Europe in 1944.

The only negatives associated with this book are the lack of writing style (this man was, actually, not a professional writer) and a certain amount of data overload concerning formations, locations, and dates.

My suggestion is to read it slowly and don't mind if you find yourself skipping of a an Armoured Division here or an Infantry Division there. Just keep track of the narrative and you will be surprised at how 'tight' the story ends up being. Also, don't forget to skim the appendicies for some interesting perspective on how experts 'thought' the war in Europe would go.

Overall this is an excellent book for interested parties. If you don't have a strong interest in WWII or spycraft I would consider lighter fare.

5 out of 5 stars They fooled Hitler, Rommel, and the German High Command........2001-07-16

This book is very detailed. "The author actually wrote the account at the end of the war, but its publication was delayed until the principal participants died or came out of hiding." (Thats all I should have to say.) I would highly recommend this book (hence the 5/5 stars). They fooled Hitler, Rommel, and the German High Command. How? Well, read this baby and you'll know how. (Project Fortitude) This goes beyond the inflatable tanks, fake radio broadcasts, double agents, spies, and etc. There are several intresting documents, too. I read and purchase several history books and documentaries. I must admit that I’m only 3/4 through. This book is worth the money!!! I could yap on instead check out an excerpt. Have FUN :-)

                          Chapter One

                          Early Planning

The decision to invade France in 1944 was taken at the Casablanca Conference in January 1943. General Morgan was appointed Chief of Staff to the future Supreme Commander and established his headquarters at Norfolk House, St James's Square, in April of that year. On 26th April he received a directive from the Combined Chiefs of Staff which, besides instructing him to prepare plans for a full-scale assault against the Continent as early as possible in 1944 and for a return to the Continent in the event of German disintegration at any time, also demanded `an elaborate camouflage and deception scheme extending over the whole summer with a view to pinning the enemy in the West and keeping alive the expectation of large-scale cross-Channel operations in 1943. This would include at least one amphibious feint with the object of bringing on an air battle employing the Metropolitan Air Force and the Eighth US Air Force.' The deception plans which were prepared in compliance with that instruction and which received the name of COCKADE do not strictly lie within the scope of this report. Nevertheless, as they had a bearing upon subsequent events, a short account is included.

COCKADE had two distinct objects: to contain German forces in North-Western Europe, thus preventing them from being used on the active fronts, and to destroy German aircraft. The plan comprised three connected operations: TINDALL, the threat of a landing in Norway; STARKEY, of a landing in the Pas de Calais; and WADHAM, of one in the Bay of Biscay. STARKEY and WADHAM, so the story ran, were to be complementary operations. After the bridgehead in the Pas de Calais had been established by British forces, an American landing was to take place in Western France with the object of opening Brest, which could then be used to land troops sailing direct from the United States. The forces in the United Kingdom being held inadequate to support all three plans, the French and Norwegian assaults were presented as alternative undertakings. STARKEY was the most important part of COCKADE inasmuch as it included an elaborate embarkation exercise by 21 Army Group in which the landing craft actually sailed to within a few miles of the French coast, as well as real air attacks against the Pas de Calais. TINDALL and WADHAM relied mainly on the use of wireless, dummy devices and controlled leakage.

                            Book Description

On 6 June 1944, Allied forces stormed the beaches at Normandy. The invasion followed several years of argument and planning by Allied leaders, who remained committed to a return to the European continent after the Germans had forced the Allies to evacuate at Dunkirk in May 1940. Before the spring of 1944, however, Prime Minister Winston Churchill and other British leaders remained unconvinced that the invasion was feasible. At the Teheran Conference in November 1943, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill promised Josef Stalin that Allied troops would launch Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy, in the spring. Because of their continuing concerns about Overlord, the British convinced the Americans to implement a cover plan to help ensure the invasion's success. The London Controlling Section (LCS) devised an elaborate two-part plan called Operation Fortitude that SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force) helped to fine tune and that both British and American forces implemented. Historians analyzing the Normandy invasion frequently devote some discussion to Operation Fortitude. Although they admit that Fortitude North did not accomplish all that the Allied deception planners had hoped, many historians heap praise on Fortitude South, using phrases such as, "unquestionably the greatest deception in military history." Many of these historians assume that the deception plan played a crucial role in the June 1944 assault. A reexamination of the sources suggests, however, that other factors contributed as much, if not more, to the Allied victory in Normandy and that Allied forces could have succeeded without the elaborate deception created by the LCS. Moreover, the persistent tendency to exaggerate the operational effect of Fortitude on the German military performance at Normandy continues to draw attention away from other, technical-military reasons for the German failures there.

                              Book Description

The Berlin Jewish community was both the pioneer in intellectual modernization and the first to experience a crisis of modernity. This original and imaginative book connects intellectual and political transformation with the social structures and daily activities of the Jewish community. Steven M. Lowenstein has used extraordinarily rich documentation about the life of Berlin Jewry in the period and assembled a collective biography of the entire community of Berlin Jews. He has examined tax lists, subscription lists, genealogical records, and address lists as well as kosher meat accounts to give us a vivid picture of daily life. On another level in detailing the complexity of Jewish life in Berlin during this period, this book illuminates the connections between the "peaceful stage" of enlightenment and the crisis that followed.

                                  Book Description

An exploration of racial identity and family, as seen through the lens of 10 Black families living in a predominantly white, affluent community

What does it mean to be Black in a white, middle-class community? Is it the ultimate symbol of success? Or will one pay in isolation, alienation, rootlessness? What price must one pay for paradise? Is the price too high?

Beverly Daniel Tatum, a renowned authority on the psychology of racism, interviewed Black families in depth to identify the sacrifices and achievements necessary to survive and prosper in a white community. For the Black citizens of "Sun Beach," dual-income households, religious affiliation, and extended families help maintain stability. But with assimilation comes an insidious "hidden racism," subtly communicated when Black children aren't called on in class and revealed more fully in incidents of racial name-calling. By listening to the individual voices of these children and their parents, Dr. Tatum skillfully probes the complex questions of identity that arise for a visible people rendered invisible by their surroundings.

                                    Book Description

This book represents a first effort to systematically describe the experience of immigrant women in the U.S. labor market over the past thirty years. It may come as a surprise that the United States is currently home to more immigrant women than immigrant men. However, until this study was conducted, the attention of analysts and policymakers has focused solely on the labor performance of immigrant men. Georges Vernez's analysis of immigrant women's experience is the first to break this trend, revealing a complex story that resists easy interpretation. Some immigrant women succeed beyond all expectations, while others struggle all their lives and have little to show for it. In examining the myriad factors that contribute to the success and failure of immigrant women in the U.S. workforce, this book provides a profile of their changing origin and characteristics; describes what they do, where they work, and how they fare in the U.S. labor market; and looks at the use they make of public services to support themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Working Immigrant Women Quantified!.......2003-05-23

This books uses census figures and other sociological numbers to evaluate the status of immigrant women in the American employment arena. This book carefully peels the onion asking not just if immigrant women work, but where, why, for how long, and for how much.

I did not know where on the political spectrum the RAND Foundation lied, so I was very worried that this would be a horridly xenophobic and racist text. However, this book is refreshingly objective, though you could guess that the researcher has a progressive perspective.

This was a very important intersectional text. I hope that policy makers, feminists, and immigration activists read it. This book shatters myths about immigrants. First off, throughout most of American history, immigrants have been predominantly female, unlike common misperceptions would have it. On the one hand, myths that immigrant women steal jobs is untrue: they replace older workers and other Americans who don't want certain jobs. On the other hand, most female immigrants are not self-employed: the idea that all immigrants are energetic, self-starters is false.

This book is thin. However, you must read slowly in order not to misread the facts. About one-third of this book consists of statistical charts, but everyday readers should not be scared by this. The researcher repeats himself often. I loved the introductory chapter about the history of women and American immigration. The penultimate chapter on whether immigrant women utilize social services was important, but kinda broke the flow of the text.

The fact that the title asks questions (note the plural) "Who Struggles? Who Succeeds?" is an important statement to how diversity is respected. Different demographics about immigrant women are brought up when necessary. This book states that Pilipinas are doing incredibly well. This surprised me because many Asian-American studies books refer to them as the "Forgotten Asians" in comparison with other groups. Still, this book illustrated the intense difficulties of Chicanas; Latino immigration activists should find these numbers especially helpful in their work. Now that 75% of all immigrants are from outside of Europe, race is important but not the be all to end all. It was emphasized without being overemphasized. This may make some people less afraid to approach the work. The author separates "immigrant women" from "native-born women", so those in the "1.5 generation", who were born abroad but almost entirely raised here, may feel falsely represented. Additionally, this book compares native and foreign woman more than it does foreign women and men. Please be aware.

I found this book by accident, but I am pleased that I did.
