For almost five decades, Fundamentals of Private Pensions has been the most authoritative text and reference book on private pensions in the US in the world. Several of the chapters in this section update and refine material from the prior. New chapters in this volume describe the conversion of some traditional pensions to new hybrid forms, including cash balance and pension equity plans, and the growing phenomenon of phased retirement and the issues raised for employer-sponsored pensions. Section 5 explores the funding and accounting environments in which private employer-sponsored retirement plans operate. The concluding section investigates the handling of assets in employer-sponsored plans and their valuation as well as the insurance provision behind the benefit promises implied by the plans. This latest edition of Fundamentals of Private Pensions will prove invaluable reading for both academics and professionals working in the area of pensions and pension management.

A good reference.......2002-09-14

A good reference book for anyone connected with a pension or profit sharing arrangement. It is not a guide to IRAs, Keogh plans, SEPs, rather it focuses on traditional defined contribution and defined benefit plans. While this book seems written for more for budding actuaries, those wishing to study design alternatives or asset management will find this book provides a good background. I find two flaws with the book.

First is the lack of examples. While the book discusses full funding limitations, it does not show you an example calculation. While it tells you how to calculate the minimum liability, it does not show you an example of how to present it in the financial statements. This book is not a text book, but it would be very helpful to see some real examples in practice rather than only discussions about the rationale behind the method.

Second, the single chapter on pension accounting is weak. Issues not mentioned include accounting for minimum liability, disclosures under FAS 132, understanding the relationship between funding and expense, curtailments and other plan amendments, the interrelationships between the conflicting limitations of ERISA/IRC/GAAP, the effect of pension assumptions on the financial statements and the impact of FAS 87 for an over funded plan on the financial statements of the sponsor. The perspective focuses more on the reasons the accounting standards exist, not the strategy or day-to-day issues of how the pension affects the financial statements of the sponsor. If accounting is what you need, buy a current intermediate accounting book.

Very complete yet sometimes boring: serious stuff !.......2000-11-07

Very coplete study, covering almost all imaginable subjects, from actuarial maths to investment management to organisation and HR aspects of pension provision. This is not a manual, though. Get a simpler and less in detail book to get a general view of the topic, and then use "Fundamentals..." as reference.

The anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS) method, exploiting the so-called anomalous dispersion effect near the absorption edge of the constituent element, is one of the most powerful methods for determining the accurate partial structure functions of individual pairs of constituents or the environmental functions around specific elements in multicomponent systems. Stephen Chan is Professor of International Relations and Dean of Law and Social Sciences, the School of Oriental and African Studies, the University of London. He advised the early government of Zimbabwe and has published many books on the international relations of Southern Africa.

Good History but Not for Novices.......2004-04-23

This is an interesting, readable political history of Zimbabwe from the end of white rule in 1980 to the dubious Presidential election of 2002. The account is based on author Chan's diplomatic experience, his numerous visits to Zimbabwe, and his mastery of the scholarly literature. The narrative varies from the analytical to the impressionistic: Chan writes very well, and has a gift for anecdote and the right turn of phrase. That said, his choice of emphasis is sometimes bizarre. Many pages describe Zimbabwe's military intervention in Mozambique in the 1980s, while relatively few are devoted to the more recent and eventful DRC intervention in the 1990s. Similarly, Harare's relations with the British Commonwealth are treated in much greater detail than its relations with the IMF. Economic developments in general are noted only in passing. Readers already well-versed in Zimbabwean history will undoubtedly benefit from Chan's keen observations and insights. But others coming to the subject for the first time, and interested in a straightforward chronology of events or basic biographic information on Robert Mugabe and other political players, might to turn to Martin Meredith's Our Votes, Our Guns instead.

a good book for anyone, anywhere, not just in Mobile.......2002-04-22

This is a brilliant book. Hoffman draws fascinating portraits of a barrage of characters from in and around Mobile, and also ex-Mobilians. I am from Long Island, New York, and this was an incredibly readable, vastly enjoyable, slice of life from a different part of the country. Hoffman is a talented journalist and top-notch writer. He gives turns the local into the universal, while vividly analyzing a small cross section of the world.

Mobile Revisted.......2001-07-30

It is impossible to grow up in Mobile, Alabama without this historic Southern city leaving its indelible mark. Even though I moved away 25 years ago, I still call Mobile home. Roy Hoffman's collection of articles about the people and places that make Mobile unique, brought back many memories and has stayed with me long after I turned the last page. The Mobile Register is indeed fortunate to have such a talented writer at its disposal.

You Can Go Home Again.......2001-06-08

Roy Hoffman has disproved the theory that you can't go home again. With the turn of each page, I'm transported from central Texas to the city of my birth. His book, BACK HOME : JOURNEYS THROUGH MOBILE, is truly that. My mind journey's to Bienville Square, the Saenger Theater, Toolen High School, The Cathedral, the variety of languages that greeted my ears as I walked with my grandmother down Dauphin Street, the Electric Maid Bakery, whose lemon puffs were to die for, and the Gene and Roy movies at the Century on Saturday mornings. I go back somewhat earlier than Mr. Hoffman in my personal memories. Streetcars, marching in endless parades down Government Street (Catholic schools loved parades), and the beautiful Christmas eve midnight mass conducted by Bishop Thomas J. Toolen. His history of the ferry to Fairhope brought back memories of my parents who "courted" on that ferry. Fairhope was also the site of several family vacations. Floundering in the bay, a one-time Jubilee occurrence, and playing around Battles Wharf are very fond memories. The mention of Grand Bay brought thoughts of cousins who lived there and summer visits complete with catching fireflys, wading in cold creeks and eating scuppernongs from the vine. Mr. Hoffman has accomplished what he set out to do - at least for this reader. For a few days, I can sit on my couch with his book and travel back to a long-ago time and place that I still call home. This is the first of Mr. Hoffman's books that I've read, but it certainly won't be the last. And even if you aren't an expatiate of Mobile, you'll certainly be planning a trip to this historical and beautiful city soon. Thanks for a wonderful journey, Mr. Hoffman.

The artwork for this book was created by Chris Pig, one of the best British printmakers working today. Chris knew Meltzer quite well and was honored to create his trademark linocut prints for this project. Chris is represented by Vinson Gallery in Atlanta.

Not only a brilliant account of an exciting life in the anarchist movement in Great Britain, not only crucial to understanding it's history and developement, but also a very funny and enjoyable read.
