    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The "Must Have" Book On Mentoring.......2002-02-23

If you can afford just one book on mentoring this is the one to
buy. Kathleen Barton shows her readers how to build a powerful
and lasting mentoring network to move their careers forward. I
particularly appreciate the practical aspects of "Connecting
With Success." For example, the section on Finding Mentors & Networking Contacts shows what to look for in a potential mentor, via a mentor assessment worksheet. In addition it
provides some suggested organizations one can get involved in to connect with potential mentors, clients, or employers. Other chapters provide similar helpful tools to greatly assist the reader in the networking process.

As a lifelong networker and mentor I enthusiastically support
the principles shared in this outstanding book. I highly
recommend "Connecting With Success" to anyone desiring to make mentoring and networking an integral part of their lives!

                                  Book Description

This proceedings volume of the 3rd International Workshop on Quantum Aspects of Beam Physics, presents the latest advances in beam dynamics. The frontiers of beam research point to increasingly high energy, greater brightness and lower emittance beams with ever-increasing particle species. These demands have triggered a rapidly growing number of beam phenomena that involve quantum effects.

In addition to the more established topics, this volume covers topics on high energy-density particle and photon beams for laboratory astrophysics investigations, as well as the application of beam physics expertise to astrophysics studies. Other exciting new topics are the physics of ultra-cold or condensed beams, such as the "crystalline beams" and the Bose-Einstein condensate "atom lasers".

This book will be a valuable source of reference to readers interested in the interdisciplinary frontiers of "quantum beam physics" that involve beam physics, particle physics, laser science, astrophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear and atomic physics.

                                    Book Description

The three volumes VIII/1A, B, C document the state of the art of "Laser Physics and Applications". Scientific trends and related technological aspects are considered by compiling results and conclusions from phenomenology, observation and experiments. Reliable data, physical fundamentals and detailed references are presented.

In the recent decades the laser source matured to an universal tool common to scientific research as well as to industrial use. Today the main technical goal is the generation of optical power towards shorter wavelengths, shorter pulses, higher efficiency and higher power for applications in science and industry. Tailoring the optical energy in wavelength, space and time is a requirement for the investigation of laser-induced processes, i.e. excitation, non-linear amplification, storage of optical energy, etc. According to the actual trends in laser research and development, Vol. VIII/1 is split into three parts: Vol. VIII/1A with its two subvolumes 1A1 and 1A2 covers laser fundamentals, Vol. VIII/1B deals with laser systems and Vol. VIII/1C gives an overview on laser applications.

                                      Book Description

Based on personal papers and original documents
From Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barbara Bush to Martha Washington, here are biographical sketches of all the women who have served as First Lady. Based on personal papers and original documents, and written by leading historians and political scientists, these well-researched essays offer the latest insights about presidential wives. Each entry is a balanced, objective assesment of the historical contributions that each First Lady made to history and to the role, and how she responded to changes in the nation's highest office itself and in the evolving social demands on women.

The subjects of popular attention and controversy
These essays reveal the degree to which First Ladies since Martha Washington have been the subject of popular attention and controversy and examine how they coped with the demands of fame. Moreover, the essays assess each woman's place in defining and developing the institution of First Lady. They provide a selection of the First Lady's own writings, contemporary articles by family and friends, biographical studies of both her general surveys. An obituary is included for deceased First Ladies. Bibliographies indicate where personal papers and other manuscript sources can be found. The book also cites the location of primary sources, identifies the best biographies, and offers topics for further research.

The book Dorothy Dandrige is a very deep and interesting story about a young woman who stugggles all through movie her career. The book is very well written and is real in depth about her life. I think that the author realy did a good job writting this book, althogh i wish he would have go more indepth about her life before she was a movie star. I recommed this book to anyone who knows what it is like to struggle in life and did what it takes to over come the struggle.

5 out of 5 stars Early Texas Ranger's diary annotated by skilled historian.......2002-04-02

For those who have a keen interest in Texas history or the early istory of the Texas Rangers, this book is a must-read. For those with a general interest in American history, "A Private in the Texas Rangers" offers an intriguingly honest and informed focus on the life of a 1880s lawman, one that is only possible by a diarist of the past and a skilled historian of the present.

Morris's second major work is a solidly based insider portrait of the Texas Rangers in their transition from the Old West (exploited by Hollywood) to the New West -- an industrial and agrarian society which reshaped Texas. Indeed, the transition has been so thorough that for many denizens the conflicts between plains indians, incursive Hispanics, and Anglos prior to the coming of the railroad are probably only known through cinematic references. The laconic entries -- by the only 19th century Texas Ranger who kept a diary -- provide Morris with the structure for a wide-ranging history.

The book expands from the diarist to the fellow rangers of Company B, then to the surrounding land and communities. There are informative and broader references to government, both State and Federal, and to social movements such as labor disputes and historical forces. Most mportantly the laying of railroad track through the Texas Panhandle and Rolling Plains region sewed it into the fabric of the national community.

The daily life of Private Miller, despite incidents of drama, is more convincingly focused on the drudgery of the effort required to impose order and the rule of law where it had been relatively rare. As one proceeds through the entries and the accompanying annotations, the slowly accumulating details of the life and times of the diarist begin to provide a richness of vicarious experience, a recovery of a "lost world," and one that is rarely achieved in historical writing.

Publius Clodius Pulcher was a prominent political figure during the last years of the Roman Republic. Born into an illustrious patrician family, his early career was sullied by military failures and especially by the scandal that resulted from his allegedly disguising himself as a woman in order to sneak into a forbidden religious ceremony in the hope of seducing Caesar's wife. Clodius survived this disgrace, however, and emerged as a major political force. He renounced his patrician status and was elected tribune of the people. As tribune, he pursued an ambitious legislative agenda, winning the loyalties of the common people of Rome to such a degree that he was soon able to summon forceful, even violent, demonstrations on his own behalf.

The first modern, comprehensive biography of Clodius, The Patrician Tribune traces his career from its earliest stages until its end in 52 B.C., when he was murdered by a political rival. Jeffrey Tatum explores Clodius's political successes, as well as the limitations of his popular strategies, within the broader context of Roman political practices. In the process, Tatum illuminates the relationship between the political contests of Rome's elite and the daily struggles of Rome's urban poor.

Dr. Tatum's grasp on the political and social environment during the time of Pulcher's influence on Roman society is quite empressive. He has an uncanny ability to relate the importance of all aspects of Roman life in relation to the politics of that time, and deals with this large influx of information and viewpoints without deterring from the flow of his narrative. I'm an avid fan of both Roman history and Dr. Tatum, and recommend this book to any with interest in ancient Roman history - novice and historian alike.

For late-20th-century culture, Berlin in the 1930s has become a place of mythic enchantment and decadence, a hypersexual Eden fraught with the danger of oncoming fascism. But this late-century fantasy of the Weimar Republic has always obscured the material reality of the actual time and place. Norman Page's Auden and Isherwood: The Berlin Years is a succinct, extraordinarily well researched, and perceptive look at a very complicated cultural and political point in history. While Page organizes his book as a joint biography of novelist Christopher Isherwood (whose Berlin Stories were the basis for Cabaret) and poet W.H. Auden--two politically progressive Englishmen who fled to Berlin to pursue the personal freedom they could not find at home--the book is actually a portrait of frantic Berlin culture from 1928 to 1933. While Auden and Isherwood were drawn to the city because of its open gay social life, Page makes it clear that the conditions allowing that freedom also created a vibrant, exhilarating artistic culture. From Josef von Sternberg's The Blue Angel to Magnus Hirschfeld's fight for sexual liberation, Page places Isherwood and Auden (and their work) in a clear and beautifully textured historical context. Using Isherwood's Christopher and His Kind and Auden's unpublished diaries, Page brings new insights to both these writers and an era that had a profound formative effect on their lives and work. --Michael Bronski

                                            Book Description

Like Paris in the twenties, Berlin in the early thirties was one of the most exciting cities in the world. As the Weimar Republic sputtered to a close and war loomed on the horizon, the city was a magnet for talented writers and artists. It was in this now-vanished time and place that W.H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood lived, wrote and slept together. Norman Page tells the story of how these years shaped these important writers and, in doing so, illuminates a bygone era.

5 out of 5 stars Seeds sown in the soil of turmoil.......2001-05-05

Books of fiction and nonfiction, films, paintings, and museums abound in the ongoing ceaseless inspection of the atrocity and madness wrought by Hitler in Nazi Germany. It is an unfortunate fact that such turmoil gives rise to some of the best art in the years after the strife. Norman Page, in his brilliantly researched and written AUDEN AND ISHERWOOD: THE BERLIN YEARS, has selected two men of great significance in literature and poetry as his points of entry into studying the Berlin that seduced the world before it jolted nearly to an end. These portraits of Auden and Isherwood are really an examination of an historical time that altered the art world as inevitably as it altered our sense of the dangers of dictaorship.

Initally drawn to Berlin from the hallowed halls of English academe because of the rowdy free sex/hedonisitc atmosphere that had become Berlin, "Berlin meant Boys" and both our artists fled the England that sacrificed Oscar Wilde to find the open sexual freedom of the City of Sodom. Author Page gives us such a rich, fascinating ride through the places and faces of pre-war Berlin that we are finally allowed to see why Modernism started, why cinema became important, how artists such as Grosz and Dix and composers such as Weill and Stravinsky, scientists (Hirschfeld) and writers (Brecht) found such acrid colors for their creativity. Page is not confined to his title characters, though we learn more personal characteristics than any writer has dared to date: we are informed about Marlene Dietrich, Stephen Spender, Benjamin Britten, as well as a constellation of other characters encountered by them. This volume reads like a novel (not without some kinship to Isherwood's famed GOODBYE TO BERLIN), but its importance as a publication is its uncommonly thorough view of why Hitler rose, why the Berlin Wall was destined to be (and to fall), and why the center of the artistic universe was for a few short years the glossy, naughty Berlin.

This book is a must for those who want to understand the beginnings of sexual freedom, those fascinated by the inception of WW II, and for those who happen to love the poetry of W.H. Auden and the stories of Christopher Isherwood. Keep this book on your literary Reference Shelf.
