Outdated waste of money!.......2004-01-29
This book is helplessly outdated. It is of no use whatsoever in todays world. It has a few humurous quotes - demonstrating how outdated it is. Suggesting an operating system is the new secretary, is testiment to the author's lack of 'Systems' knowledge. Beyond this weak humour, it could be used as a doorstop and little else. As an academic text, it is a complete waste of money.

Book Description
The scientific research based on spectropolarimetric techniques is undergoing a phase of rapid growth. Instruments of unprecedented sensitivity are nowadays available, particularly for solar observations. To fully exploit the rich diagnostic content of such observations, it is necessary to understand the physical mechanisms involved in the generation and transfer of polarized radiation in astrophysical (or laboratory) plasmas.
After an introductory part based on classical physics, this book tackles the subject by a rigorous quantum-mechanical approach. The transfer equations for polarized radiation and the statistical equilibrium equations for the atomic density matrix are derived directly from the principles of Quantum Electrodynamics. The two sets of equations are then used to present a number of applications, mainly concerning the diagnostics of solar magnetic fields.
This book is primarily addressed to scientists working in the field of spectropolarimetry. It may also serve as a textbook for a course at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level.

Book Description
For all dinosaur enthusiasts, rockhounds, and tourists, this is the definitive guidebook to the paleontological treasure trove of fossil footprints in the western United States. Concentrating on the rich fossil life of the Colorado Plateau Region--including parts of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico--Martin Lockley and Adrian P. Hunt tell the story behind a track record that extends back some 300 million years.
Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of the Western United States takes readers on a fascinating journey through America's ancient past. The authors explain, in language the nonscientist will appreciate, the fossil track record from the Paleozoic Era through our modern Cenozoic Era. Specialists will appreciate the annotated references and detailed descriptions of important specimens. A series of lifelike illustrations by artist Paul Koroshetz depicts dinosaurs in their natural habitat, and an appendix lists museums and other major repositories of tracks and replicas, giving details on tracksites open to the public. Dinosaur Tracks is the perfect guidebook for explorations of the exciting prehistory of the American West.

Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of the U.S........2004-11-16
"Dinosaur Tracks and Other Footprints of the Western United States" written by Martin Lockley and Adrian P. Hunt is a gem of a text book covering dinosaur tracks left by dinosaurs millions of years ago. It not only tells you how to observe and record the trackways, but gives you the areas in which trackways have been found throughout the Western United States.
"Dinosaur Tracks" names the trackways, gives an explaination as to how the tracks are preserved and where are the tracks...incorporating interpretation of fossil footprints along with track assemblages is found with the pages of this book. We see tracks throughout time and the book touches on conservation and preservation of trackways.
There are 7 major chapters in the book and they are as follows:
An Introduction to Fossil Footprints
Ancient Tracks: The Paleoxoic Era
Archosaur Ascendancy: The Triassic
Days of Dinosaur Dominance I: The Jurassic
Days of Dinosaur Dominance II: The Cretaceous
The Age of Birds and Mammals: The Cenozoic Era
Tracks Galore, and What They Can Tell Us.
The footprint sites and exhibits in the Western United States covers the following states. Arizona with Lake Powell, Museum of Nothern Arizona, and Tuba City. California with Raymond Alf Museum and The University of California at Berkley. Colorado with Dinosaur Ridge, Dinosaur Valley, Purgatorie Valley, Rancho Rio, and University of Colorado at Denver. Nebraska with Toadstool Park, Ogallalla National Grassland. New Mexico with Clayton Lake State Park and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. South Dakota at Hot Springs Mammoth Site. Texas with Dinosaur Valley State Park. Utah with The Molab Vicinity, Prehistoric Museum, College of Eastern Utah, The Vernal Vicinity, and The Warner Valley. These sites are covered well within the pages of this book.
There are diagrams and pictures of the actual footprint trackways and the explaination as to what type of dinosaurs or animal make the tracks. There is adequate discussion as to why they are what they are.
I found the book to be written like a text book, but with a style that keeps you interested about the subject at hand. The is excellent discussion and the book is well reasoned out. "Dinosaur Tracks" is a book for the serious dinosaur enthusist... this is a college text and reads like one, for an audience that is either taking geology or paleontology. I gave "Dinosaur Tracks" a solid 5 star rating for an excellent presentation of the subject and an interesting book about dinosaur footprints and their interpretation.

Book Description
The reigning master of grand historical fiction returns with the stirring conclusion to his bestselling Dublin Saga.
The Princes of Ireland, the first volume of Edward Rutherfurd’s magisterial epic of Irish history, ended with the disastrous Irish revolt of 1534 and the disappearance of the sacred Staff of Saint Patrick. The Rebels of Ireland opens with an Ireland transformed; plantation, the final step in the centuries-long English conquest of Ireland, is the order of the day, and the subjugation of the native Irish Catholic population has begun in earnest.
Edward Rutherfurd brings history to life through the tales of families whose fates rise and fall in each generation: Brothers who must choose between fidelity to their ancient faith or the security of their families; a wife whose passion for a charismatic Irish chieftain threatens her comfortable marriage to a prosperous merchant; a young scholar whose secret rebel sympathies are put to the test; men who risk their lives and their children’s fortunes in the tragic pursuit of freedom, and those determined to root them out forever. Rutherfurd spins the saga of Ireland’s 400-year path to independence in all its drama, tragedy, and glory through the stories of people from all strata of society--Protestant and Catholic, rich and poor, conniving and heroic.
His richly detailed narrative brings to life watershed moments and events, from the time of plantation settlements to the “Flight of the Earls,” when the native aristocracy fled the island, to Cromwell’s suppression of the population and the imposition of the harsh anti-Catholic penal laws. He describes the hardships of ordinary people and the romantic, doomed attempt to overthrow the Protestant oppressors, which ended in defeat at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, and the departure of the “Wild Geese.” In vivid tones Rutherfurd re-creates Grattan’s Parliament, Wolfe Tone's attempted French invasion of 1798, the tragic rising of Robert Emmet, the Catholic campaign of Daniel O’Connell, the catastrophic famine, the mass migration to America, and the glorious Irish Renaissance of Yeats and Joyce. And through the eyes of his characters, he captures the rise of Charles Stewart Parnell and the great Irish nationalists and the birth of an Ireland free of all ties to England.
A tale of fierce battles, hot-blooded romances, and family and political intrigues, The Rebels of Ireland brings the story begun in The Princes of Ireland to a stunning conclusion.

Title clarifications.......2007-09-29
Confusing titles of the same books, led me to Rutherfurd's website under News. Outside of North America PRINCES OF IRELAND is titled DUBLIN: FOUNDATION and REBELS OF IRELAND is titled IRELAND AWAKENING. Now I can enjoy the correct sequel!
the reader.......2007-08-12
I have read all of Edward Rutherfurd's books in this series. I have not started to read the Rebels as yet. I will have time off soon and that will be a pleasure then.
Great stories, but too long!.......2007-07-31
Edward Rutherfurd is a great story teller of individual lives and of history, and he does a good job of mixing the two in `The Rebels of Ireland'. The folks seem real, and the stories twist and turn enough and are bizarre enough in many cases to seem real; you can seldom guess how things are going to turn out in the great flow of Irish history. I think he is better at character development and interaction than the esteemed James Michener and on the same level as Jeff Shaara, whom I especially admire as a historical novelist. I kept thinking what a good movie this would make; but let's face it, the movie would be a few generations too long. In fact, that is my only criticism of the book: there were perhaps too many stories being told, to the point that the book approached the size of Tolstoy's `War and Peace'.
The book is about the confluence of the Reformation and British colonialism and the years that follow, roughly paralleling the American story, except that the Americans rebelled earlier and more successfully than the Irish. (Of course, the Americans had the advantage of being an ocean away from England.) It seemed that the ordinary person was at the whim of whatever was being cooked up in the British parliament and that Ireland was more or less a vassal of England. As you learn in the first book of this two-book series, `The Princes of Ireland', the Brits were better organized than the Irish and simply took over the island centuries before the Reformation. After the 16th century, a strong division developed between Catholics and Protestants, Ireland being basically identified with the Catholics and England being basically Protestant. The book proceeds until just after Michael Collins and the takeover of the Dublin General Post Office in 1916.
It was a good book, but it was just a tad too long for me.
Irish History Comes to Life!.......2007-06-30
After having read Rutherford's earlier volume in this Historical Fiction series, I was anticipating a good solid effort that would provide an entertaining read with the added bonus of some grounding in Irish History. This book provided all of this and for me, actually raised the bar from the previous effort, The Princes of Ireland.
Intricately woven through several generations with effective literary devices maintaining the thread and providing strong story lines which keep the reader tied to the plot despite the span of years and movement through multiple historical contexts, this work succeeds better than most of the genre. You will leave with a stonger understanding of Irish History and appreciation of what it must have been like to have lived through those days.
Broad in appeal, this work will appeal to those looking for good strong historical fiction, a better appreciation of Irish History are a better connection to their own Irish Roots.
Wonderful Book About the Irish "Troubles".......2007-04-30
As other reviewers say this is a wonderful history lesson detailing the history of the conflict between Irish Catholics and Protestants. It starts about 1400 and goes to the beginning of the 20th century. I do have one nit to pick and that is that most of the characters are of the "well-to-do" class. They are fleshed out and good characters but, if one read only this book, one would hardly believe there was any poverty in Ireland. I recently read a book called "Wind and Shadow" by Carraher in which he writes of Ellen, a farm girl (the book starts in 1946 after WWII) and talks of all the people who must leave Ireland because there is no chance of making a living there. Carraher is speaking of a life (Ellen's) "outside of the great events of History". But isn't that the lives of most of us, those of us who don't make it into history books? So perhaps, with E. Rutherfurd concerned more about historical events than not, he had to write about members of the upper class who were more involved in parliaments and decision making. Still it is a lacking in this book that the "average" Irish man/woman is not really present. But the book, despite that, achieves much. It is heartwarming in spots, quite dramatic in others, and educational overall. Who knew that Benjamin Franklin visited Ireland just prior to the American Revolution? "Irish Rebels" is overall a wonderful achievement.
Product Description
Edward Rutherfurds stirring account of Irish history, the Dublin Saga, concludes in this magisterial work of historical fiction. Beginning where the first volume, The Princes of Ireland, left off, The Rebels of Ireland takes us into a world transformed by the English practice of plantation, which represented the final step in the centuries-long British conquest of Ireland. Once again Rutherfurd takes us inside the process of history by tracing the lives of several Dublin families from all strata of society Protestant and Catholic, rich and poor, conniving and heroic.
From the time of the plantations and Elizabeths ascendancy Rutherfurd moves into the grand moments of Irish history: the early-17th-century Flight of the Earls, when the last of the Irish aristocracy fled the island; Oliver Cromwells brutal oppression and confiscation of lands a half-century later; the romantic, doomed effort of The Wild Geese to throw off Protestant oppression at the Battle of the Boyne. The reader sees through the eyes of the victims and the perpetrators alike the painful realities of the anti-Catholic penal laws, the catastrophic famine and the massive migration to North America, the rise of the great nationalists OConnell and the tragic Parnell, the glorious Irish cultural renaissance of Joyce and Yeats, and finally, the triumphant founding of the Irish Republic in 1922.
Written with all the drama and sweep that has made Rutherfurd the bestselling historical novelist of his generation, The Rebels of Ireland is both a necessary companion to The Princes of Ireland and a magnificent achievement in its own right.
Customer Reviews:
Not as enjoyable as his other books.......2007-08-02
I always like Mr. Rutherfurd's books, however I did not find this one as compelling as some of his others. In this book we cover various families in and around Dublin from the late 1500s into the early 20th century. The major theme of this book is quite clearly the fight by many of the Irish people for both religious and political freedom from England.
Although not as entertaining as his other books, it is quite insightful, giving looks into the history and causes of Ireland's struggle with England. It's also quite educational and a real lesson in history repeating itself. An example of this is the chapter on the potato famine. For those of us who in modern day are quite skeptical of "free trade" as practiced by the US, some of the reasons given for the potato famine being worse than they might have been are shockingly similar to our current free trade philosophies. The British government was not willing to step in and subsidize or control the price of grain, saying that the market would take its natural course. The results were that when that same government needed to buy grain to try and feed the hungry, the price of grain had skyrocketed because of the free market and the grain growers knowing that they could charge pretty much whatever they wanted.
This is not a light read. It's full of history, concepts and opinions. So don't take it on unless you're looking for an education.
My star ratings:
One star - couldn't finish the book
Two stars - read the book, but did a lot of skipping or scanning. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection or search out other books by the author
Three stars - enjoyable read. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection. Would judge other books by the author individually.
Four stars - Liked the book. Would keep the book or would look for others by the same author.
Five stars - One of my all time favorites. Will get a copy in hardback to keep and will actively search out others by the same author.

Excellent!.......2004-12-01
I added this fine work to my library about 4 months ago and already the pages are showing signs of wear. I can't begin to say how many times I have turned to this fine work for a reference source..
Mr. Spalding has put together a very readable sourcebook. The book begins with a calendar of notable events, followed by six outstanding essays on six of America's most notable founders. All six essays come from different authors and each one is equally well written.
The last half of the book is devoted to notable quotations, founding documents and additional resources. The quotes are divided into numerous indexed categories. The documents, such as the Declaration of Independence, have quick reference sidebar notes. You won't regret adding this fine work to your personal library.

Book Description
In this brave and lyrically composed tribute to her mother, Minrose Gwin accomplishes something rare in the craft of the memoir: not merely a record of a devastating mother-daughter relationship but a redemptive act of artistic witness as well. In telling the story of her mentally ill poet mother, Erin Taylor Clayton Pitner, Gwin looks backward and forward at a southern family, linking personal and cultural malaise while also attempting to envision the person her mother longed to be, the woman Gwin never knew.
Erin Taylor wasn't always crazy. Her childhood diary from 1930 reveals a cheerful, observant Mississippi girl who always wished for snow, though "usually it didn't come. And when it came it didn't stick." From a dreamy college student to a young divorced mother who then remarried, grew middle aged, and began to write and publish poetry, Erin Taylor spiraled deeper and deeper into the psychosis that eventually defined her existence until her death from ovarian cancer. Gwin searches for her mother amid the poetry, letters, recipes, traffic tickets, newspaper clippings, medical reports, and quixotic lists left behind. She even conjures a ghostly "Erin in the office" who tells her own version of Gwin's memories.
"There is," Gwin writes, "such a thing as crazy-mother bonding. This can occur unexpectedly any time two women who have crazy mothers are having a conversation. . . . There are more crazy mothers than you might think." With humor, intrigue, and sadness, Gwin's compelling memoir reflects the brilliance and despair of her mother's life. Haunting every page of Wishing for Snow is the sense that Erin Taylor is transcending the tragic limitations of mental and physical disease through her daughter's quest to truly know her. Gwin's combination of candor and grace takes wing toward a reconciliation both impossible and utterly necessary.

The Story of a Leader.......2001-08-31
Jean Monnet changed history. Not through political office, but through the power of a great idea and an intelligent and unyielding campaign to make the idea a reality, a campaign that was simultaneously idealistic and utterly grounded in both principle and reality.
Monnet deserves to be recognized, alongside King and Gandhi, as one of the three great citizen leaders of the 20th century. The book tells his stories in his own words. It is worth reading.
Father of EU.......2000-02-10
I read this book because of making a paper in my class of political leadership & elite. There is an interesting article on Monnet in H.Gardner book about political leaders. Monnet was promoting his vision by using other political leaders .In the same time he was offering them the glory (f.e. Schuman plan). If anyone wants to exchange opinions on the matter let me know! alexandros@mauimail.com
A glimpse into the mind that created the European Community.......1997-03-03
Starting life as the net-in-line to a prosperous Cognac producer, his extensive European connections and business skills led Jean Monnet to be named as a prime European liason to the US during WWII. His sole mission was to secure critical supplies for waging the war against the Nazis. Chasing item after crucial item, he learned and became fascinated with the workings of a true free market economy.
After the war he set out on a single minded mission to create the United States of Europe out of the chaos left by the war. Fighting centuries of division, animosity, and separatism, Jean doggedly advanced his concept of a free market covering the entire map of Europe. He was convinced that this would result in a renaissance of European industry and commerce, and the hearts and minds of Europeans would follow their pocketbooks.
Told in a very matt-of-fact manner, his persistence and uncompromising attention to even the slightest detail gives insight as to how he succeeded in planting the seeds of the modern European Community. His influence was so great that the Economist magazine has consistently advocated that the new European Community common currency be called the "Monnet."

Management Consultant to Governments. Peace and prosperity instead of World War III.......2006-08-28
The book consists of two parts, part one describes how the European Union developed with a supranational dimension and the role of Monnet in its establishment. It becomes very clear that without the supranational dimension the Union would never have been established and World War III would already have taken place. This first part reads like a novel. In the second part, "The Legacy" the ideas and methods are described that Jean Monnet used to achieve a successful European Union. This review concentrates on the second part.
It is only possible to present to few of the ideas and methods. The title of the book is interesting, " The First Statesman of Interdependence". Interdependence refers to the fact that significant change in the actions of government can only be achieved by understanding the interdependency between, the prime minister, the other ministers, the bureaucracies of the ministers, the political parties, businessmen, the financial and business community and sometimes trade unions, not of one country but of several countries. Developing a solution requires the participation of these organisations. Monnet describes many different organisation structures for this purpose. All projects had a direct line to the president or prime minister. Monnet always saw to it that a single ministry never took over responsibility as rhat was the "kiss of death" for his type of project. Yet, he recognised that unless you brought the ministries and their bureaucracies along you would fail too.
Another key factor was the choice of the core team working directly with him. He spent a lot of his time finding the right members of the core team and did not hesitate to reject recommendations of the prime minister and of other ministers.
One of the methods Monnet used repeatedly was the "balance sheet". The balance sheet was a summary of all the resources material and immaterial necessary to solve a problem. These balance sheets were prepared involving all the persons with power and influence on implementing a solution. The "balance sheet" has the advantage that all organisations involved have to share information. The cabinet can only make an informed decision about priorities and an action plan based on a complete and holistic picture.
Another important concept was the need of having a powerful central "actionable" idea that appeared self-evident and obvious when presented to persons in power. Monnet spent weeks in talk-shops with a group of extremely bright and argumentative people saying nothing and only listening in the first phase, inserting a few words in the second phase, and directing the discussion in the third and final phase. The formulation of an idea could easily require 30 drafts before presentation. Monnet went never to a meeting without having a draft of what he was proposing in front of him.
One of the ideas he pursued was that war in Europe could only be avoided by creating a European organisation to which nations operationally delegated a part of their authority. This European organisation has as a consequence a supranational dimension. This led to the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1952 with Jean Monnet at its head. That organisation was the pioneering organisation that led to the European Economic Community or EEC (called Common Market in the UK) in 1956, leading to the European Union (EU) in 1993. I interviewed Jean Monnet in 1954 as a student, very inspiring!
Monnet believed that the cause of war is that governments pursue policies that they believe are in the national interest without considering the interests of other governments. He considered that people are born with strong egocentric tendencies that lead to nationalistic behaviour of governments. This problem can therefore only be solved by creating an institution that can reconcile conflicts between nations, with sufficient power delegated to it for making decisions that the "sovereign" nations involved accept. Emmanuel Kant was the first one to forcefully formulate this truth in his essay "Perpetual Peace" (1891). This book presents a clear picture how incredibly difficult it is to get nations to delegate some of their authority to an independent supranational organisation.
The view in Buddhism of human nature is less pessimistic. Buddhists believe that people are born with egocentric and altruistic tendencies and that the ego-centred tendencies can be mastered by training the mind. As a matter of interest, interdependence is also a central concept in Buddhism.
This book is of great interest to people working in politics, government and for interested NGOs and management consultants. It is also of interest to businessmen that want to understand how a government functions and/or that are looking for ideas for making radical changes in the character of their companies.

Book Description
Telling Moments collects contemporary short stories by a diverse group of twenty-four lesbian writers. Engaging themes of life and death, aging, motherhood, race, love, work, and travel, the writers offer brief glimpses into lesbian lives.
The stories are by well-known contemporary writers—Gloria Anzaldúa, Mary Cappello, Emma Donoghue, Jewelle Gomez, Karla Jay, Anna Livia, Valerie Miner, Lesléa Newman, Minnie Bruce Pratt, Ruthann Robson, Sarah Schulman, and Jess Wells—and exciting newer voices, such as Donna Allegra and Marion Douglas. There are also stories from performance artists Carmelita Tropicana, Peggy Shaw, and Maya Chowdhry. Anna Livia’s protagonist appreciates her mother’s artful garden creation. Ruthann Robson tells of a survivor of the health care system. In Marion Douglas’s story a teenager dances with an alluring classmate. Donna Allegra’s strong construction worker copes with the death of her mother. And Karla Jay sets her character forth to swim with sharks. Most of the stories are accompanied by an author photo, biographical sketch, and—a most significant feature—a commentary from the author on her writing process and the autobiographical nature of her story, illustrating the truth behind the fiction.
