    Book Description

This monograph seeks to provide a theoretical foundation and linkage between financial and managerial accounting. Just as the lines between the CPA-auditor or the financial analyst and consultants, underwriters, and management have been blurred through the Enron audit failure, so, too, will the lines between research streams relating to management (management accounting) and external parties (financial accounting) be less easily drawn.

After providing the theoretical foundation for information asymmetry in the first three sections, emphasis shifts to case studies. Section four focuses on case studies and issues relating to the transmission of symmetric and asymmetric information on the Internet.

5 out of 5 stars Great information for ANY kind of work.......2006-11-21

This book does an excellent job of capturing the differences between work done mundanely, and work done artfully (the latter being craftsmanship). Any work can be performed in an artful way.

The premise is that anything worth doing is worth doing well. Being completely present benefits us in many ways, and adds more to our lives than the tedium of just performing tasks would.

Artful work, seen as a contribution to the individual, is an exceptional thing to integrate into your life. Working without meaning definitely detracts from the individual. Dick Richards clearly argues the distinction between the two poles.

A great quote from the book is "It takes courage to grow up and be who we are." Being artful, and expressing ourselves in the world, is being respectful to us - to who we are, and what we can contribute. No matter what you do, doing it with your whole self could be greater therapy than anything else you might be able to buy.

Although the topic is serious (heavy to many), it is well written and easy to consume. The author does a great job of interpreting deep serious topics to manageable ideas that won't scare readers away.

He also discusses not just an artful individual, but what an artful organization might look like. How can you be artful, how can your organization encourage artfulness, how can leadership foster it. Very much worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Renews hope that we can all find meaningful work.......1996-07-28

This book recently won the Ben Franklin Award from the National Booksellers Association for content, design and production in the business book category. It is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. The stories are touching and the message gives hope that each of us can find meaningful work and the the search is worth it

Alfred, King of Wessex. The Legal Code of Aelfred the Great. Edited With an Introduction by Milton Haight Turk. Boston: Published by Ginn and Company, 1893. viii, 147 pp. Reprinted 2004 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. LCCN 2003056437. ISBN 1-58477-392-8. Cloth.

        * A legendary figure in Medieval history, Aelfred [871-899] expelled the Vikings from England and founded the first significant centralized kingdom in present-day England and Wales. A learned monarch, he was well-versed in Christian theology and Classical thought. His legal code attempted to teach his subjects about their duty, the king's authority and the collective destiny of Wessex. Indeed, the preface contains a history of law beginning with the Ten Commandments, which suggests that he believed his subjects were a new people of God. Not a code or handbook in the conventional sense, it aimed to promote the king as a lawgiver on Roman and biblical models. This edition contains the complete text of the code with full scholarly apparatus and an extensive introduction that discusses manuscripts of the code, philological issues and the code's legal and literary qualities.

                Book Description

The authors have developed a text that reflects the directions Genetics is taking as it heads into the 21st century. This perspective embraces five major themes: 1. The central importance of the genome, as opposed to the action of individual genes; 2. The application of genetics to the improvement of human health; 3. The growing appreciation for the relationships among organisms arising from genetic research; 4. The impact of biotechnology on the accelerating growth of genetic knowledge; and 5. The importance of emerging social and ethical issues related to our use of biotechnology.

The book does a good job of helping the student to understand different concepts of Genetics.

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up.......2003-06-14

I used this text as an undergraduate three years ago. It provided me with a wonderful insight into genetics genomics and introductory molecular biology. The books is highly readable with wonderful diagrams and a marvelous set of probelsm following each chapter. Also note one of the authors Dr. Hartwell is a nobel laureate. I believe a new edition is on the way but I find myself unwilling to part with my favorite genetics book even as a graduate student. The price of the new edition would be especially high like when I bought the 1st edition. I suggest the low budget readers like me to buy used copies of the 1st edition because the prices are dropping fast on used copies. Highly recommended for undergraduates of all levels and as an introductory text for a graduate level genomics course.

                3 out of 5 stars biobabe.......2003-05-16

This textbook was helpful and easy to read. It is a nice introductory textbook into genetics for an individual who has yet to take molecular biology or biochemistry. It seems to be just the right length as well; however, it is rather pricy for its thickness. The major issues that I had with this textbook were that there were several errors throughout the text and even more in many of the figures. The figures were wonderful unless you tried thinking about them, at which point, several errors were discovered. For an introductory genetics student, mistakes in figures can be a large problem simply because students often rely on figures to explain new information. I know that their next edition, the 2nd edition, which is now out, will only be better & I look forward to reading it! :)

                4 out of 5 stars Genetics Textbook.......2003-01-10

This text was used in a class that I TAed. Many of the students found the text too detailed and confusing and so they relied mostly on the professor's notes. The text is overly wordy as it describes genetics in detail from a problem solving point of view. There are many problems at the end of each chapter ranging from simple to extremely difficult.

The CD is just plain silly. It tries to be interactive, but the activities are either too easy like the chromosome matching activity that makes `incorrect' noises until you match the correct pair (and really what do you learn from that anyway) or just non-intuitive. I remember playing with one section about genetic markers, and I gave up frustrated with trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing. Interactive Fly lab is much more useful than this CD. You won't be missing anything if you get a used copy without the CD.

From a graduate student perspective, Part IV of this text: Portraits of Model Eukaryotic Organisms is extremely useful. There is a chapter on each of the most commonly used model organisms: yeast, plant, worm, fly, and mouse that explain a brief history of the use of the organism, how genetics is done in that organism, and what is most useful to study in the organism. When I first started graduate school I found myself reading papers and getting lectures about specific model systems that I had never worked with before and these chapters brought me up to speed quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Nice textbook--a little thin for the price.......2001-10-20

I'll try really hard not to rant about how much textbooks cost--but since the only negative part of this review will involve that, I'll get it out of the way: if I have to pay well over a hundred dollars for a required textbook, I want it to be THICK. I want to be able to glean so much knowlege from the book that I walk away with a head two times bigger than it was when I started! When I realized it was written (in part) and contributed to by faculty at the University of Washington (where I earned my BS), I assumed we were assigned this over-priced book simply because they wrote it. As a poor student, it really bothered me...until I read it.

But my rant stops there; the rest of the review is good. I used this book the first year it was published in a class; the text was clear and had a nice mix of review material that kept you up to date. The organization was good, beginning with a brief section on Mendelian genetics, moving to gene regulation, and ending with a bang-up chapter on population genetics and molecular evolution.

I'm hanging on to the book rather than packing it away or selling it back, because I know I still have more to learn. Highly recommended.

                  Book Description

This book presents a theory for unconventional superconductivity driven by spin excitations. Using the Hubbard Hamiltonian and a self-consistent treatment of the spin excitations, the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in various unconventional superconductors is discussed. In particular, the monograph applies this theory for Cooper-pairing due to the exchange of spin fluctuations to the case of singlet pairing in hole- and electron-doped high- T c superconductors, and to triplet pairing in
Sr 2RuO 4. Within the framework of a generalized Eliashberg-like treatment, calculations of both many normal and superconducting properties as well as elementary excitations are performed. The results are related to the phase diagrams of the materials which reflect
the interaction between magnetism and superconductivity.

In·Tom Holt's second continuation of E. F. Benson's classic Mapp and Lucia novels, Tilling is hurled into fierce social warfare as Lucia contends with Elizabeth's latest ruse — a game of Monopoly — to win over the hearts and minds of the town's populace. Is Lucia haunted by ghosts? Will she triumph in the face of a royal visit? Is Mapp of noble blood — or of criminal heritage? “The period is caught with remarkable skill. Equally well captured is the spirit of Benson's six Lucia novels.” — Oxford Mail

Mr Holt did a fair job at crafting this book. At least he got the basics right, but He didn't quite capture the whole spirit of the lucia series. With the original series, Benson managed to tell the story that was going on "on stage" but there was a great deal more that was going on behind the scenes that you would only pick up on by reading between the lines. There were lots of little things that didn't quite ring true, and it felt a little hollow. It was just a little too over the top at times. One of the things I noticed right away was the fact that Mr Wyse never seemed to take any of his usually to frequent bows.

Still, it was a pleasant enough read, and I doubt anyone could ever really hold a candle to benson

                  4 out of 5 stars Lucia Redux.......2000-07-08

Those of us who are Lucia fans (of the origianl E.F. Benson six books) can never get enough of her upper middle class, early 20th century English scheming. The original novels are some of the funniest ever written--perhaps more-so because we cannot help but see a little bit of ourselves and our friends through our laughter.

Holt's Lucia Triumphant is not a send up, but one of two lovingly crafted continuations of the series. In the originals nothing ever happens of much import except in that it sets up comedic bits that one can read and read over again a laugh everytime. In Holt's novels, the situations are just a little more ridiculous, and the characters drawn with just a little more characature. That is my only complaint, this is not quite up to E.F. Benson's writing in the--one might say--subtlety of the broadness. Otherwise, this is a fine comedic novel, indeed. If you are a Luciafile, or you like Evelyn Waugh and that ilk, you will enjoy this book immensely.

It is an enjoyable homage to Benson's characters well worth your time.

                          Book Description

First published in 1994, this stirring autobiography of a fighter and test pilot takes readers full throttle through Marion Carl's imposing list of "firsts." Beginning with his World War II career, he became the Marine Corps' first ace, was among the first Marines to fly a helicopter, and was the first Marine to land a jet aboard an aircraft carrier. His combat duty included the momentous battles at Midway and Guadalcanal. Not one to rest on his laurels, however, he participated in photoreconnaissance operations over China in 1955 and flew missions in Vietnam. In peacetime he gained fame for "pushing the envelope" as a test pilot, adding the world's altitude record to his wartime feats and becoming the first U.S. military aviator to wear a full pressure suit.

Such achievements led to Carl's being the first living Marine admitted to the Naval Aviation Hall of Honor, as well as the first Marine to be named to the Navy Carrier Aviation Test Pilots Hall of Honor. As forthright and compelling as the man it chronicles, this very readable memoir was written with the help of noted aviation historian Barrett Tillman.

I live in Oregon and had the honor of visiting with Marion Carl on several occasions. During an airshow, I was escorting him around the aircraft and he spotted several Marine aircraft with there pilots standing near their aircraft. Marion spent a good deal of time speaking with them. Later I stopped by the pilots Marion had been talking with and to say the least these young men were impressed. The book is easy to read. Barrett did a great job of writing. I would recommend this book to any aviation buff.

I admit some of the technical words were over my head but one has to acknowledge Maj. Gen. Carl's 35 years in the Marine corps. He was quite a guy. It is unfortunate we have so few of his caliber today. I think we owe it to him to read his story. What a tragedy after such a life to have his life ended the way it did.

This is a fantastic book on a little known hero. Although I only met him one time and had limited time with him, there was a feeling of confidence and humility that is shown in this book. One of the best reading books in a long time.

                          Fantastic book.

My father was a childhood friend of Marion Carl. I followed his carieer and he always has been my hero. I enjoyed the book very much and learned a lot about Marion.

Combining hands-on learning with solid science, trivia, riddles, and terrific illustrations, projects investigate "the reason for the season" and include identifying trees and measuring their growth, recording soil temperature, and observing the forest floor. Bird migration and nest building are covered, and the movement of air and water is studied with experiments in capillary action and in such activities as "Making Parachutes," Making Kites," and "Mapping Air Currents with Bubbles."

                                    Book Description

Young readers become scientists in the field when this activity book sends them off to answer the question Why do we have winter? with experiments and projects that mix real science with real fun. Combining hands-on learning with trivia, jokes, riddles, and terrific illustrations, chapters start with the "tools" of science—the scientific method and how to keep a science journal—and then investigate the winter constellations, long nights and long shadows, animal tracking in snow, and food-gathering behavior in birds. Several activities center on water and ice, including "The Freezing Point of Water," "Making Ice Cream," and "The Amazing Snowflake Crystal," while indoor projects include the study of static electricity and a recipe for simple yeast bread.
