The Compensation Solution: How to Develop an Employee-Driven Rewards System
John E. Tropman Manufacturer: Jossey-Bass ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0787954012 |
Book Description
Money isn't everything to today's employees. This book shows companies how to combine traditional compensation with the educational, emotional, and psychological benefits that will attract the best and brightest. It identifies the ten elements--including learning, advancement, emotional rewards, and quality of life--that job seekers rank highest among desired benefits. Then it shows employers how to combine them with monetary benefits to create effective, employee-driven compensation packages.

Feast for Thought.......2002-10-29
Mr. Tropman shows how thinking clearly about what he calls indirect pay, works pay, and perks pay can help employers and employees fit the job better and fit the total compensation value better to the employee. In this way both sides better understand the ways they are each gaining benefits and bearing costs through the work being done by a given employee.
It never claims to be a one size fits all panacea. Rather, it is a helpful model that aids clearer thinking and discussion.

Cosmic Evolution: The Rise of Complexity in Nature
Eric J. Chaisson Manufacturer: Harvard University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0674009878 |
Book Description
We are connected to distant space and time not only by our imaginations but also through a common cosmic heritage. Emerging now from modern science is a unified scenario of the cosmos, including ourselves as sentient beings, based on the time-honored concept of change. From galaxies to snowflakes, from stars and planets to life itself, we are beginning to identify an underlying ubiquitous pattern penetrating the fabric of all the natural sciences--a sweepingly encompassing view of the order and structure of every known class of object in our richly endowed universe.
This is the subject of Eric Chaisson's new book. In Cosmic Evolution Chaisson addresses some of the most basic issues we can contemplate: the origin of matter and the origin of life, and the ways matter, life, and radiation interact and change with time. Guided by notions of beauty and symmetry, by the search for simplicity and elegance, by the ambition to explain the widest range of phenomena with the fewest possible principles, Chaisson designs for us an expansive yet intricate model depicting the origin and evolution of all material structures. He shows us that neither new science nor appeals to nonscience are needed to understand the impressive hierarchy of the cosmic evolutionary story, from quark to quasar, from microbe to mind.

Thought-provoking look at evolution.......2003-04-18
Illuminating and rock-solid.......2002-11-17
This book has finally reconciled for me the vexing question of how complexity and disorder (entropy) can increase simultaneously. I knew that total entropy must increase, per the 2nd law of thermodynamics. What I did not realize is that the maximum POSSIBLE entropy of the Universe is increasing even faster, due to the expansion of the Universe. So now I have a way of visualizing the amount of complexity in the Universe - it is the difference between these two entropies.
One of my favorite aspects of the book is the clear identification of the phases of the Universe: Radiation Era->Matter Era->Life Era. The idea that we, as intelligent life, can give birth to a thriving, universal Life Era is visionary and uplifting (and part of the basis for Reason for the Common Good).
Cosmic Evolution is extremely well-researched, quantitative, and most of all, illuminating.
Worth the Effort.......2002-09-23
The payoff, for those who persevere, is two or three new ideas. And that's why we read books like this.

Introduction to the Quantum World of Atoms and Molecules
Jens Peder Dahl Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9810245653 |
Book Description
This invaluable book provides a balanced and integrated introduction to the quantum world of atoms and molecules. The underlying basis of quantum mechanics is carefully developed, with respect for the historical tradition and from a molecular angle. The fundamental concepts in the theory of atomic and molecular structure are thoroughly discussed, as are the central techniques needed in quantum-chemical applications. Special attention is paid to exposing and clarifying the common ground of Hartree-Fock theory and density-functional theory. Throughout the text, the discussion is pedagogically obliging and aims at simplicity and mathematical clarity, while avoiding the use of advanced mathematics. End-of-chapter problems supplement the main text.

Industrializing Organisms: Introducing Evolutionary History (Hagley Center Studies in the History of Business and Technology)

Book Description
Scientists have developed a featherless chicken designed to make industrial chicken production more efficient, while specially trained Pacific bottlenose dolphins are being deployed in the Persian Gulf to disarm mines and protect our Navy. Everyone knows Darwin's theory of natural selection, but what about his idea of artificial selection--how humans, not nature, rework natural organisms to meet our needs? Industrializing Organisms brings us to the threshold of the new field of evolutionary history--from the mobilization of war horses in the 19th century to today's engineered plants and manipulated animals.

Stanislav Lunev was a Soviet GRU (military intelligence) agent who defected to the United States in March of 1992 after a successful career of intelligence gathering from China and the United States. As the highest-ranking military defector to the U.S., he is in a unique position to detail the intelligence aspect of the cold war and the emergence of the Russian mafia as a threat to national security.Through the Eyes of the Enemy is more than the autobiography of a highly skilled intelligence operative and defector; it is a "debriefing" on the new cold war being waged by the Russian mafia against American corporations. Lunev portrays organized crime as the only authority in modern Russia, and asserts that this element has infiltrated every level of American private and corporate life. He provides chilling details of seismic weapons, mass-scale corporate espionage, and deep-cover death squads. Through the Eyes of the Enemy could be dismissed as fantastic paranoid ravings were the source not so credible and the ramifications not so severe. --Brendan J. LaSalle

Through the Eyes of the GRU.......2000-07-04
Mr. Lunev had an interesting life in the GRU, though I'm sure his description would be somewhat less positive. Nevertheless, this book gives us a good idea of what drives a defector to seek asylum --- dissatisfaction.
More than anything, this book is an insight not so much into what was and is going on in the old Soviet Union as what is going on inside Mr. Lunev. If you take the information he offers and move on to the next resource, you will find it a useful minor reference in the search for the truth.

4 pages "expanded" to 150 pages.......1998-08-29
I also question the validity of many of the so-called secrets he reveals. I've worked in the area of National Defense for many years. Much of what he claims as fact I seriously doubt is true. All-in-all the material should have been covered in about a 1000 word article.
A disappointment! A least it is a fast read - since there are only 172 pages of text.
