"Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right." -- Henry Ford.......2007-06-26
During a recent business trip, I stopped by an airport store and saw a display of several volumes of the "Essential Managers" series. I purchased this one as well as Andy Bruce and Ken Langdon's Strategic Thinking, read both while en route home and was surprised, frankly, to find each to be remarkably comprehensive within a 69-page narrative. Obviously, the subject of maximizing performance is vast and complicated. No single book could possibly cover everything, nor do Seymour and Shervington make any such claim. What they offer is a focus on fundamentals, as do the volumes which comprise the "Harvard Business Essentials" series.
Seymour and Shervington divide their material within four sections: Thinking about Performance, Improving Your Performance, Helping Others to Improve, and Continuing to Improve. Note the use of direct address (.i.e. "Your") which correctly indicates the direct and personal rapport that Seymour and Shervington establish and then sustain with their reader. In effect, they are saying "Here is what we have learned about maximizing performance. We hope it will help you and your associates, individually and together, to produce more and better work in less time."
In the Introduction, Seymour and Shervington duly acknowledge their high regard for the skills that Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help to develop. (To those who wish to obtain more information about this methodology, I recommend NLP: The New Technology of Achievement, co-edited by Steve Andress and Charles Faulkner.) Obviously, there are several different types of under-performers. The two most familiar to me are those who are able but unwilling, and, those who are willing but unable. For managers, the challenge when supervising those in the first group is to inspire self-motivation; when supervising those in the second, the challenge is to do everything possible (and appropriate) to help them to increase their strengths while reducing their weaknesses. The principles and techniques of NLP can help managers to respond effectively to either challenge but, alas, "you can't win them all." Or as Jason Jennings has so concisely suggested, "If it's DOA, bury it."
I quite agree with Seymour and Shervington about the importance of emotional intelligence. (Daniel Goleman has written several immensely informative books on the subject, most recently Primal Leadership: Learning to Lead with Emotional Intelligence, co-authored with Richard E. Boyatzis and Annie McKee.) The most effective managers recognize emotions as "fuel" that, if carefully processed and properly controlled, can create the energy needed to solve especially serious problems. If change initiatives are involved, for example, emotional intelligence enables those who possess it to respond effectively to resistance...to what James O'Toole has aptly characterized as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." There is always room for personal improvement, of course, and that is as true of managers as it is of those whom they supervise. The importance of emotional intelligence is even greater when a team effort is needed. Effective communication, cooperation, and collaboration between and among members of a team are difficult, if not impossible, unless everyone involved is respectful of her or his associates, eager to receive as well as provide constructive criticism, committed to common goals, and sensitive to others' needs and interests.
For me, some of the most valuable material in this volume is prevented in the third section, Continuing to Improve," as Seymour and Shervington focus on a subject of special interest to me: how to sustain a performance improvement process. They recommend the formulation of a "life plan" that consists of specific objectives (each having a deadline) and then selecting the strategies and tactics to achieve each objective. Here again, NLP principles and techniques can be of substantial assistance to what should be viewed as a never-ending process of performance improvement. The Gallup Organization has accumulated a wealth of research (on millions of individuals within thousands of different organizations) that stresses the need to leverage one's strengths in proper alignment with the work to be done. Hence the importance of assuming personal accountability for one's performance. Readers will appreciate the provision by Seymour and Shervington of a self-diagnostic, "Evaluating Your Performance Skills," with responses serving as a benchmark against which to measure progress when activating their own "life plan."
As I read this book, I was again reminded of Oliver Wendell Holmes' comment, "I would not give a fig for the simplicity this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity." To me, that comment suggests the essential value of the "Essential Managers" series, at least of the two volumes I have read thus far. Here's another point. What Seymour and Shervington have to say about the fundamentals of maximizing performance is consistent with what other experts on the subject suggest, notably Marcus Buckingham, Stephen Covey, Peter Drucker, John Maxwell, Carla O'Dell, and Brian Tracy. As I read this book, I was also reminded of what Drucker observed in 1963: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all."
However different they may be in every other respect, all under-performing organizations fail to maximize the performance of their people at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise. With all due respect to the importance of knowing what to do and how to do it, former Texas football coach Darrell Royal is right: "potential" means "you ain't done it yet." Credit John Seymour and Martin Shervington with providing a remarkably comprehensive discussion of what to do and how to do it. It remains for those who read their book to apply what they have learned.

An addition to reference material.......2001-02-06
Since this book was published well before the launch of the first stage of the International Space Station, it is not the book for someone who wants to know the story of the ISS since its launch. Many things have happened that could not have been predicted. Other things that one might have guessed, such as delays, make the recent story very interesting but, of course, are not included in this book. What it does have is lots of wonderful pictures of satellites that came before and stories about how we got to the place where we could launch the ISS. If anyone is interested in the politics of NASA and JPL and the government and how they resolve their problems, this book has a lot of information: I don't know how accurate it is but its a good read, anyway.
revealing, as far as history goes........2000-10-18
This book does a good job of clerifiying the space situatation during the cold war. Russia had the advantage and they are not a bunch of bad guys. However, Russia has had some bad times and America seems to be doing a bit better, so after much testing and STALLING we have the ISS, finally people are starting to get it right! The book will inform and educate, also you will have to face the fact that America has approched space with more lack of enthuziasm as have other space fareing nations yet we are still superior in many ways. This is the will of the people here, NOT GOVERNMENT! Democracy at its best!!!

A good all around evolution guide for biologists.......2000-02-13
This book is a very good book about the evolution controversies. It repeats a lot of information from basic ecology classes. It is for a person who has a firm understanding of basic biology. It is the first book I have read that portrays the different types of evolution. The only time that it speaks about creationism is the last 2 chapters. These last two chapters can be understood by non-biologists, however. It is a good read for the devout biologist, though it is now quite old and out of print.

Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Electron Correlations and Materials Properties. The aim of this series of workshops is to provide a periodic (triennial) and in-depth assessment of advances in the study and understanding of the effects that electron-electron interactions in solids have on the determination of measurable properties of materials. The workshop is structured to include exposure to experimental work, to phenomenology, and to ab initio theory. Since correlation effects are pervasive the workshop aims to concentrate on the identification of promising developing methodology, experimental and theoretical, addressing the most critical frontier issues of electron correlations on the properties of materials. This series of workshops is distinguished from other topical meetings and conferences in that it strongly promotes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of correlations, involving the fields of quantum chemistry, physics, and materials science.

The commencement speaker at Madeleine Albright's 1959 graduation from Wellesley College told the women at this prestigious East Coast school that their sterling education would serve them well. They were, said then Secretary of Defense Neil McElroy, "given the ideal preparation to serve at the very heart of the home." But the daughter of Czechoslovakian parents, whose diplomat father moved them to the U.S. when his country fell under Soviet control, was far too intellectually ambitious to be sent into domestic exile. Seasoned Time political reporter Ann Blackman's biography describes how Albright moved past the expectations of her time--and the challenges of being an immigrant--to become the highest-ranking woman in the history of U.S. politics when Bill Clinton picked her to be his second secretary of state.
Through a peripatetic childhood, marriage and divorce, and the increasing demands of her work as a Ph.D. candidate, professor, and United States ambassador to the United Nations, Albright is revealed to be driven and demanding, a savvy diplomat who has forged relationships with world leaders and with a small, sustaining group of powerful American women. Extensively researched and enlivened by anecdote, Seasons of Her Life is a fascinating study of a very unusual and dynamic woman's rise to power. --Maria Dolan
Book Description
When Madeleine Korbel Albright was sworn in as secretary of state in January 1997, she made headlines around the world. She was the first woman to rise to the top tier of American government and had a reputation for defining foreign policy in blunt one-liners that voters could understand. When her Jewish heritage was disclosed, people were intrigued by her personal story and wondered how it was possible -- if it were possible -- that she truly could have been ignorant of her past.
Veteran Time magazine correspondent Ann Blackman has written the first comprehensive biography of Madeleine Albright. The book reveals a life of enormous texture -- a lonely, peripatetic childhood in war-ravaged Europe; two harrowing escapes from her homeland, once from the Nazis, then from the Communists; her arrival in America; Madeleine's unhappiness as a teenager in Denver, always the outsider, the little refugee; her marriage into an old American newspaper family with great wealth.
When, after twenty-three years, the marriage failed, Albright was devastated. But in many ways, divorce liberated her to pursue a lifelong interest in government and international affairs. From Senator Edmund S. Muskie's office to President Carter's White House to a professorship at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, Albright gained experience and contacts. As a foreign affairs advisor to Democratic vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro and, later, presidential candidate Michael Dukakis, Albright positioned herself to return to government as President Clinton's ambassador to the United Nations and eventually to claim her ultimate prize -- the office of secretary of state.
With both insight and compassion, Blackman shows how the changing cultural mores of the last four decades affected Albright and other women of her generation: the self-doubt she experienced when, as a young mother in an era when real mothers didn't work, she decided to take a job on Capitol Hill; the problems she faced as a female professor who was not always taken seriously in the white man's world of foreign policy; the psychological transformation from spending most of her professional life as a staffer who wrote talking points for others to becoming a woman of consequence in her own right; the ups and downs of an ambitious, driven woman who still carries her share of insecurities, now concealed by a veneer of power and celebrity.
In writing this landmark book, Blackman drew on archival material in the United States, Britain, and the Czech Republic, as well as interviews with almost two hundred friends and colleagues of Albright and her family, including President Clinton, Czech Republic President Václav Havel, and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, She also spent many hours with Albright herself who, feet up in her Georgetown living room, offered startlingly frank and poignant comments on her life, past and present. The book is enhanced with twenty-five photos, many from the Secretary's personal collection.

The first comprehensive biography of Madeleine Korbel Albright, this objective yet deeply personal portrait of the only female Secretary of State and the highest-ranking woman in the American government draws on nearly 200 interviews and exhaustive historical research to tell her story.
Customer Reviews:
Bio of Information.......2002-06-29
A biography of just 300 pages, pernicious to any politician who would like to be taken as serious, as a US diplomat definitely probably would, it leaves the reader a mudlark about Madeleine Albright's successes as Secretary of State or achievements as a politician. I already have it gift-wrapped for my mother, who will probaly enjoy it more than I did (as a graduate in political studies).
Neither sassy nor seeking learned patronage, Blackman does nothing more than bandy a load of facts in her first book. One becomes reticent to believe she could ever have risen to be a deputy chief editor for a famous magazine because the reporting style used throughout is so unembellished.
The story of Madeleine's childhood and then time spent in London during the Second World War is very long, the future ambassador to the UN is still a young girl half-way through the book. There are some Eastern details of politics, of which I know little, so that was a highlight. It's arbitrary the importance of the cabinet positions and all the jobs of Madeleine Albright's father. Several recurring lengthy accounts are here of the publicized discovery of the fate of her grandparents during the war, and the cousin's life, who remained in Czechoslovakia, is also underpinned.
An example of the repetition: 'From an early age, she had learned to adapt, whether in language, culture, academic mores, or national politics' p.197.
Mostly, it seems that Blackman and Albright did not cooperate much in the production of this biography, probably because of the disparities and oppositions in the way their individual careers evolved: Albright does appear to have been in the catbird seat for a long time after her arrival to America, before slipping into highly responsible, visible and plum political roles. She had, after all, married newspaper magnet man Joseph Albright, and she had all the right connections and was well set for the political perfection which followed, with some of her own hard work and contacts (note the Golden Girls' supper reunions).
This is, simply, not a biography illustrated by the political career for which the subject is more known for.
An amazing life but hélas, so poorly written.......2002-04-04
I was so impatient to read the book when I purchased it but despite the extremely interesting topic it covered, the reading experience turned into an almost torture in time...
The first chapters of the book are totally devoted to the parents of Albright and to Europe of WW2 era. There could have been nothing wrong with this if these parts were not unnecessarily long, but unfortunately they were... I felt as if I was being tought history...
In case you do not yield to the desire to stop reading the book at this stage, you are lucky enough to reach the fascinating life of Madeleine Korbel Albright... Her life, achievements, deeds, accomplishments are so captivating that you are carried away despite the incompetency of the writer... Unfortunately, this is the first book of Ann Blackman and it is obvious that she has long way to pave... Many incidents and anecdotes hang in the air, not fitting the texture of the flow; many spelling mistakes (I totally agree, the editors must be out for lunch!), poorly chosen words, too much emphasis on trivial details...
In case you are expecting to learn about Madeleine Korbel Albright's life, go for this book, it gives you that though plainly; but in case you are looking for something more than that, for rather a well written biography, you might be disappointed...
I admired her even more........2001-01-02
I have always admired Albright and what she has achieved. My admiration grew deeper after I finished reading this book. While Albright may be privileged, it was her courage, determination, and hard works that shaped her into what she is today. Blackman unfortunately spent too many pages on Albright's ethnic/religious background. Overall, it is a good book to read for one with interests in US foreign policy with emphasis in East Europe.
Excellent history on a woman well qualified for the job!.......2000-10-07
This is an excellent book full of history about where her family came from, the truly many hardships in growing up, and what brought them to this country. Her whole life and education has really set her up - to make her ideally the "best man" for Secretary of State. Also, rather interesting to see how her father handled being Jewish, in a not-so-loved Jewish country... I loved this book. Very well written....Very informative. A truly enjoyable read...
A long read.......2000-07-25
"Seasons of Her Life" is an interesting biography about Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. The author of this book, Ann Blackman, did a wonderful job examining the finer details of Albright's life. Blackman interviewed numerous people, including President Clinton, and other close friends and colleagues of Albright, which helps the reader understand the importance of Albright in the worldwide community. Yet, all of these interviews and information are buried in the back of the book. Blackman spends too much time focusing on Albright's father, Josef Korbel, and how Madeleine Albright's family ended up in the United States. While this information is important in understanding why Albright believes in the politics that she believes in, it does not do the reader any good if they cannot get through the inital chapters. This is a well researched and through book on Albright's life, a decent book if you do not get lost in the history.

You cannot help being interested in Mr Crisp. Very eccentric and funny and I agree with wanting to be as far away from the UK as possible.! Viva NY!
A treasure.......2002-11-19
If you have read the book with Mr. Crisps droll, flat voice in your head....you can begin to imagine how much fun the audio version of this book is. His dry wit is very much in evidence here as he shares his unique perspective on life in the "smile and nod racket".
I think this recording belongs in the Smithsonian Archives.
There is a God, his name is Crisp, Quentin Crisp........1998-08-24
Crisp has done it again! Just when you think you're a maven on things-BOOM- he publishes his diaries! What a scandal, although I am sure some blue nosed puritan proofreader somewhere omitted some of the more "Corrupting evidence", Mr. Crisps personality and always charming style and wit still manage to rise above the parchment at every turn. This is an ideal "Holiday" gift for a freind to take along when on a long flight or travel to make the time seem to "Fly by", as it did for me when I enjoyed it the first time...My Word!,...I think I shall go and read it again now. Mr. Crisp is timeless and indefatigable... and like "Miss Jean Brodie", still in his "Prime"time! Kudo's once again and, Bravo, Mr. Crisp, You are "La Divine'" indeed!
