As an HR executive, I always enjoy reading Jack's books for the depth of content, and well-researched data and cases. This newest book, Investing in Your Company's Human Capital, is a model case study in HR business planning and measuring what matters. An Enthusiastic Astronaut.......2002-01-17

This is the story of Michael Foale's stay aboard Mir, as related by his father Colin. It would be hard to find a more enthusiastic and joyful astronaut than Michael, even though his life had been touched by tragedy he seems to have enjoyed every moment of what was an eventful and dangerous mission aboard Mir. Fire, collision, computer failure - the spacecraft was a basket case, but Michael was unfailingly cheerful as he helped patch it up as well as keep in contact with a multitude of correspondents by e-mail.

His father tells Michael's story as well as that of his family and he share's his son's delight in life. This is a remarkable story of what could so easily have been a tale of bitter disappointment.

Reccomended reading for those interested in the US-Russian space alliance in general and Mir in particular.

Something special that makes me continue dreaming........2000-06-02

As a Brit, and having followed Mike Foales exploits at NASA this book just adds to the hope that some things really are possible, no matter how hard they may seem. But the beauty of it is simply that through this book, he seems just a normal guy, just like any of us. It doesn't swamp you with the science, but shows the human side to the challenges we face, and makes you smile through little things like him reminding his wife to pay the bills whilst he's on the Mir and promising to put the rubbish out again once he's back.

Having read "Dragonfly" I was worried that it would be a re-hash, but I can say that it most certainly is not. The tone is different (no doubt because it is written by his father) and it adds a far greater insight into what the crew experienced.

It was definitely "un-put-downable" and I've even re-read the book which, trust me, I rarely do. Definitely the best by a long way in comparison with "Dragonfly" and Linenger's new offering.

A Family View of Orbit.......2000-03-23

One wife of an Apollo Astronaut once said, "If you think it's hard being an astronaut, you should be his wife." In this book the viewpoint of Colin Foal, a RAF pilot with a distinguished career in his own right, shows the view of the Foale Clan here in the US and England whlie son and NASA Astronaut Michael Foal spends 4 months on the Mir Space Station. During his stay, astronaut Foale contends with an onboard collision, power failures and the workings of Mir, built for 5 years in space and still going on. On earth the Foale family contends with the media quick to point out the problems of the weary station without recognizing the achievements made by Foale and his Russian crewmates. A great read to gain insight into living on the Mir and how the family at home copes with the perils of spaceflight.

I read this book to get an idea of what the masses are learning about Jesse Ventura. I'm a political science buff in Minnesota and can tell you that this book is a shallow portrayal of our surprisingly complex governor. Poorly written, poorly researched, this book was quickly written for distribution in grocery stores ect. This is not a serious or insightful biography, and should be avoided.

Tapper's done a fine job in capturing the "right-place-right-time" that has marked so much of Ventura's life. Using Ventura as an entre to explore the worlds of the Navy SEALs, pro wrestling, talk radio, and action movies, Tapper dissects and explains eccentricities of American culture. A gifted and heralded political correspondent for Salon.com, Tapper's a fine writer; his book on Ventura does not disappoint.

This is the first book/first anything I've ordered on-line (I ordered it in December and received it on Christmas Eve). Very prompt and professional service. Anyway, as far as book content, this (the book) wasn't written professionally by any means. It appears to be aimed towards WWF fans with WWF mentality. Or at the very least (and most charitable), young people and/or people who don't have a large vocabulary. It was informative, however, gave a different perspective on "the Body"! The author interviews people who knew Jesse in different stages of his life. Any book or video on Jesse Ventura, whether authorized by him or not, will draw me to it like a magnet! Huge fan, huge follower, agree with much of what he has to say! Having been raised 5 minutes or less from Minnesota, there's a more personal connection for me! :) I highly recommend this book to any fan of Gov. Ventura's!

The book's garish, campy cover does justice to the actual content of this schlocky book. Inane, boring, shallow analysis coupled with the low-brow antics of the sleazy Ventura (don't believe the hype, Ventura is a flash in the pan). What compelling book does Tapper have in store for us? Pray we don't find out......

This is an as-told-to profile of Texas cowhand Ed "Fat" Alford, related as a string of yarns you might hear told around the campfire or the bunkhouse at the end of a hard day's work. Fat was the oldest of a large family of siblings, never married, who gave his life to cowboying and whatever else in the way of work he could scrounge up during the 1920s and 1930s. Gipson has a gift for making these times and the men who lived them come to life with plenty of good humor, even though they were often struggling just to keep a buck in their jeans. At a young age, he's obliged to support his mother and her several children when his father dies in an outbreak of meningitis. While often entertaining, Fat's story does a lot to take the romance out of the profession and reveal how much plain, sweaty, dirty, exhausting hard work there is in being a "working cowboy."

Great Book.......2002-08-30

I really liked this book. It relates the true adventures of a cowhand in Texas in the 1920's and 30's. Gipson's writing style is delightful. The stories are simple and down-home, yet entertaining, making the old days seem like a hard, but neat time to live. I gave it four stars instead of five because I think a full rating should only go to a handful of absolute classics. This is a great book.

I liked the book as far as the writing goes, but the plot was limited. In a nutshell it was ONLY about cheating! I was expecting more of Waiting to Exhale meets the church. I just wished the book had given me more subjects to read about instead of cheating...that's not the only drama-filled topic. Reality has enough of that as is!

Too Much Profanity.......2007-09-06

As a rule of thumb, I read good Christian fiction and very clean romance stories. I purchased this book thinking that it was on the clean side. Sad to say it is filthy and I cannot read it...What a disappointment, in order to express oneself why do we have to use 4 letter words. I gave this book to one of my co--workers. Please be aware this book contains a lot of profanity. Can I get a refund?

Always something going on..........2007-08-14

I really enjoyed this book. I liked that there were so many different characters with different but similar stories going on. There was one couple's story that I felt was unnecessary but it didn't drag on too much where I was bored with it. I recommend this book and I hope there will be a sequel.

Delbert McCoy had it all--19 years old, married, two daughters, working two jobs at the auto plants--and life was grand.

Suddenly, in one night, 35 years ago, it all was ruined. Delbert was trapped at the bottom of a staircase at a dance hall when two disgruntled young men who had been refused admittance to the club threw a can of gasoline into the stairwell, and started a fire that burned over 90% of Delbert's body. This book is an inspiring story of his determination to live (after 108 surgeries, with more to come), and return to making a life of his own.

Delbert's story is told as if it was done as an interview--like he was talking to you across the kitchen table over a cup of coffee. This creates some repetition (and an editor could have been used at times to clean up some of the spelling and punctuation errors), but the story is so powerful that those things aren't irritating.

Anyone who is discouraged with life ought to read this book--it's inspirational, courageous, and full of hope.

Remembering my past.......2003-09-29

Thank you Dr. Holmes and Dr. Lester for this exciting, informative and historical book. I was raised in the South (LA) and experienced many of the conditions described in Fire in My Soul. Remembering my blessings on this journey, I give thanks for all of my past experiences. My parents attempted to sheild me from many of the conditions of the south and in turn I was shielded from much of the history of the Civil Rights Movement of the 60's except for limited TV coverage. Fire in My Soul serves as a personal history lesson for me and is one that I will read more than once. Reading about the personal experiences and the 'inner' workings of the local, state and federal agencies that Dr. Holmes was/is a part of reminded me of many personal experiences in the private sector. Reading Fire in My Soul remeinded me that the absence of compassion for another person is not isolated to any specific location or sector of the nation. Reading the story of one who continues to live her passion for justice offers the encouragement to do what I can where I am for justice.

In Fire in My Soul, Dr. Lester accomplishes a rare feat for a biographer. While she avoids the trap of painting too pretty or too perfect a picture of her subject, including a number of descriptions that are less than flattering, she is at the same time able to clearly allow her respect and admiration for this remarkable woman to come through.
The effect is that we see a real life heroine, warts and all, and we find her all the more admirable for this.
This is an important book, and I look forward to Dr. Lester's next effort.

The Honorable Congresswoman Holmes Up Close and Personal.......2003-07-16

Joan Steinau Lester and Eleanor Holmes Norton met as college classmates at Antioch College in 1958. They became friends and marched together in civil rights marches in New England. Now forty-five years later, Ms. Steinau Lester, now a journalist/writer reunites with Congresswoman Holmes Norton in writing her biography in Fire In My Soul.

Congresswoman Holmes Norton's great grandfather, Richard John Holmes, escaped from Virginia into Washington D.C. to become a free man and elude his former owner. He eventually became one of the few black firemen in the nation's capital and persevered to become a sergeant in the department. He felt a black man was worthy of equal opportunity and it is no surprise she inherited some of her great grandfather's fire for justice. With a legacy such as this, having descended from a strong, middle-class background, it is little wonder that she pursued a career in law that would one day put her in the limelight.

Already involved in civil rights activities, the Congresswoman, while a Yale Law School student, went to Mississippi in June 1963 to join the voter registration drive as a SNCC member. Twenty-four hours later Medgar Evers was dead, victim of an assassination and Holmes Norton had to make quick decisions concerning other members who were being falsely arrested. After law school, she obtained a clerkship with Judge A. Leon Higginbotham, Jr., the first black district court judge, in Philadelphia. She then met her future husband, Edward Norton, also an attorney, a man who was secure enough to not be threatened by her status or activities.

Holmes Norton's status did indeed rise as she ventured further into her profession as an attorney, became more involved with civil and human rights, and eventually going into politics. Her life was not always smooth. Her daughter, Katherine, was born with Down's Syndrome; however, she resisted health specialists advice to institutionalize her when she got older. She was very devoted to her.

This reviewer had the opportunity of seeing the Congresswomen twice this year. She is as formidable a presence in person as she is in the media. Her stature commands respect and her sense of belief in pursuing and preserving the rights of human life comes across instantaneously. She is a cheerleader for the people of Washington D.C., who she represents with candor and is respected by them as she respects them. This was a well-written biography of a powerful woman.

I wish there were more books like this.......2003-07-06

I don't usually read political biographies, but this one gave me the hope I was searching for in the face of the depressing political realities of today. It's inspiring to read about a fiercely intelligent woman who follows her inner moral compass while compromising when necessary to get things done. I wish everyone serving in Congress had to read this book. Every voter should as well!

A must read for political activists.......2003-05-22

This fascinating biography is not only a pager turner, it also an insightful discourse on how to be an agent of change. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who is grappling with issues of how to change policy, whether as an "insider", "outsider", or hybrid. It is also an inspirational story of an terrific woman. I couldn't put it down.
