Book Description
As the huge demand for new and improved financial services continues to grow, bankers face the difficult challenge of reducing risk and uncertainty at a time of unprecedented innovation and prosperity.
Here is a sophisticated new "risk" planner that covers the full range of banking risks operations managers and executives need to understand, including: solvency risk * liquidity risk * credit risk * interest rate risk * price risk * operating risk, and more.
The book shows how to manage each of the kinds of risk effectively within the total banking context and structure and examines in detail such issues as volatility, expected and unexpected loss, the role of risk capital, rate of return, and the required reward for risk.

Excellent.......2001-03-25
When my company's Database Administration resorted to hostage-taking in the "Toner Wars" of the late 90s, Kenneth Kaye's book provided the framework for a peaceful settlement which minimised collateral damage. Too late, sadly, for Anton from Human Resources, but his martyrdom will not be forgotten.
Help for all of us who would like to manage conflict at work.......2001-03-02
Kenneth Kaye's background in therapy and counseling is evident throughout the book. He supplies us with good insights into why conflict exists and how to reframe conflict so that we seize the opportunity presented by conflict to examine how things are and create ways of doing things better. Throughout the book, he provides authentic examples of the types of conflicts present in work places and focuses the reader on learning how to present ideas and observations so that effective dialogue is established and participants are better able to assume responsibility for creating and maintaining effective relationships at work. The Appendix coaches readers on how to engage in "active listening," a skill that is essential for reducing conflict at work. Mr. Kaye helps the reader begin to focus on desired outcomes or goals rather than on difficult behaviors. A real strength of the book is the author's inclusion of various techniques for helping members of work groups examine difficult issues or behaviors such as "springing the finger trap" or using "unilateral disarmament." Anyone committed to being a change agent in his/her organization will use the information in this book just about every day and be tempted to carry it around in a purse or pocket. Mr. Kaye's ideas are equally useful for managing conflict in any group such as a family or sports team.

From the supplier: Liability for police officers in high-speed pursuit cases has been judged according to a "shocks the conscience standard" since 1952. An alternative standard, the "deliberate indifference" standard, may be an improvement. It would set firmer guidelines for police officers and would provide consistent treatment in the courts. The US Supreme Court, however, in its 1998 decision in County of Sacramento v. Lewis, upheld the "shocks the conscience standard."

Customer Reviews:
Wow what a book........................2004-03-10
This book grabs your attention from the very beginning and keeps your interest all the way to the end. Although the story is of a serious nature, the author has also incorperated elements of humor which keeps the mood from getting too heavy. As an adult that grew up in the 70's, I can totally relate to this book. I think that anyone who grew up in the 70's and 80's can could easily look back and put different names to the characters in this book. The author did a great job of capturing the flavor of adolecence through the eyes of an adult who understands the gravity and consequences of his actions as a youth. I would highly recomend this book to anyone of any age. VG
A unique little book..........2004-01-29
I heard about this book through a friend of a cousin of the author, and was pleasantly surprised by the story and the unique voice of the narrator. It really puts the hooks in you, and can be read in one sitting. Basically, the story revolves around two boys who get embroiled in a destrucitve rivalry, but it's the little anecdotes and details along the way that give the book it's true flavor. The funniest passages deal with puberty and the protagonist's desire to become a man as he sits impatiently on the sidelines waiting for his first under arm hair. There's also a myriad of colorful characters, vividly described who add a lot to the story as well. Overall, it's not a bad first effort. W.C James has arrived and I'm looking forward to his next book. RF

Dan Rostenkowski--Chicago ward politician, 36-year congressman, and former chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee--went from the pinnacle of power to federal prison when he was convicted of corruption in 1994. His downfall makes for fascinating political drama, and Richard E. Cohen, a veteran Congressional reporter for the National Journal and author of three books on Washington, D.C., is well-placed to examine the long and colorful career of this Chicago bull's political life.
Rostenkowski's father was a city alderman in Chicago and a Democratic ward boss who taught his son the importance of taking care of constituents. For Danny, politics was the family business. However, this book is as much about the way Congress worked under Democratic leadership in the '60s, '70s, and '80s as it is about Rostenkowski. Plenty of attention is devoted to internal Democratic power struggles, for instance, while Rostenkowski's kickback scandal receives comparatively little space. At times, Cohen even seems to downplay his wrongdoings, quoting aides and colleagues who said of Rosty, "In the 1990s he used 1950s' rules. The standards changed and he didn't change with them." Cohen writes that the end of Rostenkowski's political career also marked the end of an era in politics and that characters like "Rosty" have "all but disappeared from increasingly bland American politics.... we won't see many more like him." Some might say that's a good thing. --Linda Killian
Book Description
This scrupulous political biography of Dan Rostenkowski follows his rise to power from modest origins in the Democratic ward politics of Chicago's Polish northwest side, through his national legislative triumphs, and ultimately to his criminal conviction and imprisonment for abuses of House practice. But the story offers much more than Rostenkowski's personal tragedy: it's a tale of the transformation of American political life, and of the fall of old-fashioned congressional politics. An insider's story. Anybody wanting to understand Congress and its place in American politics should read it. --Jim Wright. Masterful...not just a book on Rostenkowski; Cohen has spun the tale of the entire modern period of Congress. --Larry Sabato
Customer Reviews:
Rostenkowski: A Worthwhile Overview of a Congressional Titan.......2004-01-17
Richard Cohen's biography of former Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee Dan Rostenkowski (D-IL) offers a broad overview of the career of one of the most powerful Members of Congress in recent history.
Tracing Rostenkowski's rise from a local politician in his ethnic Chicago neighborhood to the halls of Congress in Washington, DC, his chairmanship of arguably the most powerful and storied standing committee in the House of Representatives, and finally his high-profile downfall after an indictment for corruption charges, Cohen's biography is also the story of the changing world of politics from tradition rich smoke filled rooms to the 24-hour cable news cycle of today.
While deeply researched (Cohen interviewed several of Rostenkowki's senior aides and spent time with the Congressman himself), "Rostenkowski" lacks the intricate detail of more serious works of political history. Cohen achieves neither the depth nor the perspective to push his work into the must read category. However, for a well-written and enjoyable overview of Dan Rostenkowski's career and the changing traditions in the House of Representatives, "Rostenkowski" is a worthwhile read.
One of my favorite politcos -- politics aside.......2001-10-10
Though I've been a Republican (and occasional Libertarian) since I was old enough to vote, one of my favorite politicians remains a Democrat. Chicago's own Dan Rostenkowski served as chairman of the very powerful Ways and Means Committee until 1994 when he was voted out of office amongst corruption charges and disgust with the Democratic establishment in general. Richard Cohen's book is the first and (as far as I can tell) only full-length biography of this politician and its a fascinating read. Following Rostenkowski from his beginnings as an obscure lackey of Mayor Richard Daley in the '50s to his position as the most powerful man in Washington, D.C. in the late '80s and early '90s, and finally ending with his downfall, Cohen's book shows how this man came to power though the old fashioned politics of patronage and was eventually destroyed by them. Its also a finely nuanced investigation of a man who remained bluntly unglamorous as American politics were transformed into the world's most vapid beauty contest by the Clintons and their ilk. Even as you read about the man's flagrant abuse of power, its hard not to miss Dan Rostenkowski whose ill-fitting suits, cheap haircuts, and blue collar manner become all the more likeable in the face of our recent crop of lip-biting, pain-feeling, bridge-building politicians.
A great tale of a human being and American politics.......1999-09-28
COHEN's book takes us from boyhood to the ignominious end of a political career -- and does so while telling a second and equally fascinating stoy about the changes in the American political system that accompanied, and ended, with the ROSTENKOWSKI era. For those who find Chicago politics -- where tombstones sometime vote -- to be worth a good read, this is a wonderful view of how all that worked in and around a Congressional district. For those who find the story of this Polish-American icon to be worthy of a book investment, this volume delivers 200%. For those who appreciate what a professional journalist with 30 years of Washington reporting can add to the ROSTENKOWSKI story by way of historical perspective and evolution, this is a book that cannot be missed.

Book Description
Revolution: Faces of Change collects 25 portraits of charismatic leaders - the revolutionaries - who insisted on change in the face of oppression; who persevered through ridicule, conflict, and often violent opposition; and whose human spirit has kept their legends alive. Here are the photographs and stories of heroes and martyrs, from Che Guevara to Nelson Mandela, from Malcolm X to Aung San Suu Kyi, who were and are willing to sacrifice their lives for what they believe. To accompany each portrait, the editors have selected works by eminent, sympathetic writers - many of whom have known their subjects personally- that communicate the presence of the revolutionary spirit. They include Pico Iyer on the Dalai Lama, Peter Matthiessen on Cesar Chavez, Andre Brink on Nelson Mandela, Ariel Dorfman on Salvador Allende, Gabriel Garcia Marquez on Fidel Castro, and Alma Guillermoprieto on Subcommandante Marcos.
Customer Reviews:
Revolution.......2000-05-27
This is an informative and colorful book which provides a brief sketch of the lives and works of revolutionaries who have been influential in the 19th and 20th century. The book, however, suffers from two drawback. First, the authors fail to include Marx, Engels, and Lenin who have been influential in the thinking of a number of the revolutionaries in the book. Second, there is no distinction made between the ideologies of these revolutionary thinkers. For instance the Dalai Lama, Lech Walesa, and Vaclav Havel been politically supported by the West for their anti-communist activities. This is in sharp contrast to the struggles of Che, Chavez, Davis, and others. Nevertheless, I recommend this book.

A cross between history and reality.......2000-09-26
Naff takes an interesting look at Japanese history and combines it with his own personal entries from his experiences of living in Japan. Naff tries to combine the historical parts of the book with short stories of his own experiences with the historical aspect previously written about. Naff's readers enjoy looking at Japanese society through the eyes of an American man having fallen in love with a Japanese woman.
