A Good Read!.......2004-10-13

If you are responsible for training or developing other people, if you are in a leadership role or if you simply want to accelerate your career development, we recommend Donna Dunning's book as your personal study guide. The author utilizes her 20 plus years of experience in employee development to identify succinctly the five basic competencies everyone needs to succeed. Going a step deeper than the usual treatment, she recognizes that individuals who want to develop a particular competency may not understand what mastering that competency looks like. For example, what does "mindfulness" look like? Can you see mindfulness? Not really. But you can see the results of mindful behavior. Dunning focuses on identifying specific behaviors that demonstrate each competency so anyone who wants to develop a skill knows exactly what to do. Then she takes the process still further, identifying how personality types and preferences have an impact on the development of each of the five basic competencies. She shows facilitators how to work most effectively with each personality type to develop individuals to their full potential in a collaborative manner with the least amount of frustration and resistance.

Well written and well focused.......2004-05-05

One of the most powerful definitive works on what one needs to do when mentoring or helping others. Training, Leading and Coaching at Work answers the often raised questions about mentoring - a good idea in theory, but what do I actually do?

TLC at Work provides real situations and real responses that all can learn and put into immediate use in the workplace. This book should be required reading for all University Students no matter what field of study they are in. A nice blend of theory and practice. Filled with practical down to earth tools that can be implemented easily. Myers-Briggs afficinados will find it immediately useful and so will those without a background in type because it's written so that a deep understanding of type is not required for value to be found.

tight integration of book and website.......2005-03-30

The coolest aspect of the book is its tight integration with the associated website that has scads of observational data. Along with various software that lets you analyse the data for yourself. Any of you in research who've had to write software should appreciate the amount of effort that has gone into the coding of that software.

The book also provides you with a very recent (2004) assessment of the best current understanding of pulsars. With many references to the original research papers.

But the combination of text and website is a harbinger of future astronomy books, as volumes of data keep increasing. Traditional texts gave you no such access.

Truly prophetic satire.......2003-04-07

Written well before the recent pedophilia scandal rocked the Roman Catholic chirch in Amercia, Divine Lunacy satirizes a miserably horrendous subject, preistly pedophilia.

Written in the same vein as "A Modest Proposal" by Jonathon Swift, Gallagher lashes out at the Catholic church's refusal to confront the horrendous truth, that openly homosexual and pedophilic preists operate freely under the protection of the Vatican. It's a bizzare story but underneath all the craziness there is a sense of purpose, to confront the evil that is sanctioned by the Catholic church.

Don't read this book if you are easily offended.

Another Nutcase.......2001-04-05

Kevin Gallagher is just one of many head cases to come out of an area in L.A. known as "Maplewood". The place was a magnet for seemingly perfectly intelligent people with glazed eyes who were in reality trying to bust out of their coma like state. Perhaps someday I will write a book about this collection of lunies and call it "WHO LEFT THE CAGES OPEN?"

Divine Lunacy

Just because a priest fools around with little boys doesn't mean he can't aspire to Catholicism's Triple Crown.

In Divine Lunacy, billed as a dark comedy, Kevin E. Gallagher sets himself a daunting task: to write a very funny novel on something deadly serious - child molestation. That he succeeds admirably - and without ever detracting from the gravity of the subject matter - is a tribute to his acerbic wit and his skill as an equal-opportunity satirist. Obeying the cardinal rule of that genre, he leaves no one unoffended. Jonathan Swift would beam with pride.

The setting is Orange County, California, home of Disneyland, the Angels, and John Wayne Airport. A bastion of fiscal conservatism, it has a population whose income can be calculated in the hundreds of millions, yet the county government has declared bankruptcy and the courthouse has all the ambiance of a Third World outhouse.

When county paramedic Philip Lynch is called upon to aid a stricken priest at his old parish, he finds a fat orca of a prelate with red velvet women's underwear beneath his clerical garb who whispers in his ear, "I've always loved you." At first he attributes it to delirium, but to his utter horror suddenly realizes that this is Father Patrick Ratterman, who molested him years ago when Lynch was an altar boy.

Soon Phil Lynch is engaged in a devil's dance with Harry Block, a corrupt, politically ambitious district attorney out to convict Ratterman at any cost. He has no compunction about blackmailing Lynch into manufacturing evidence and lying under oath, which makes Phil feel like's he's sold his soul to right a moral wrong.

Phil Lynch is a natural victim, a man who wants to do good with enough scruples to be at the mercy of everyone else's agenda. And agendas there are aplenty. By nailing Ratterman, Harry Block wants to win a judgeship. Phil's on-and-off lover, Sheila "Big Gulp" Schwartz, wants to nail Block legally and Phil sexually. Phil's widowed mother Agnes, formerly Block's lover, wants to nail everybody and has even installed a ramp to her door for the disabled. Her friend Graveyard Mame loves Bags Boyle, who tips pints of vodka into his colostomy bag. Block's chief investigator, Johnny Gowan, is working on his third liver even though he hasn't stopped drinking; his wife, a German/Haitian, practices voodoo. Phil's best friend and fellow paramedic Fadda swings hundred-pound weights tied to his testicles and practices obscure Asian disciplines. Phil's former high school girlfriend, the 300-pound ex-nun Linda Tucker, now Father Ratterman's defense attorney, also is willing to forge evidence - and reacquaint Phil with her mountainous charms. Her hangout is a gay/biker bar called The Rear Entry, whose patrons are her clients. When Harry Block attends a campaign rally there, Phil tells him, "You've got the Gay Nazis for Christ vote all sewn up." And then there's Phil's half-brother Almost, floating in a pickle jar full of Amaretto. . .

Plot twists abound, labyrinthine in their complexity. Acting as an undercover informant for Sheila Schwartz, Phil helps Linda Tucker in an attempt to trap Block in a sex scandal. Somehow (after a knife's been held to his throat) Phil ends up marrying their "bait," the lovely whore/nurse/Mexican revolutionary Consuela, who turns out to be the love of his life - and untouchable. The love of her life, her husband Raul, had his face eaten off by Mexican Army dogs.

At the center of this mad fable is the creepy Father Ratterman who, prosecuted and persecuted, rise Phoenix-like from the ashes of his humiliation - named a monsignor, appointed a cardinal, ultimately packed off to Rome. Phil's last televised glimpse of the pedophilic padre shows him standing on a balcony overlooking Vatican Square, his arm fondly draped around an altar boy's shoulder.

By then Harry Block has his judgeship and a newly acquired trophy wife, the now-svelte Linda Tucker. Sheila Schwartz is the newly elected Attorney General and has made good on her campaign promise to be the recipient of a Presidential penile transplant. She's now known as Izaak, and the President has visiting rights to "Li'l Willy," aka First Snake. Phil Lynch, reinstated as a paramedic, rues the loss of Consuela, who has won millions in the California lottery, been deported by the INS, and now lives in Belize with her husband Raul, whose face it turns out, wasn't eaten off by Mexican Army dogs after all.

That was some other poor guy.

Incredulous argument.......2004-12-27

Bill and Hillary Clinton's marriage is perhaps the most scrutizized in the world. In this book, Oppenheimer presses his opinion that the Clinton's marriage is held together not by love as in a normal human marriage but by ambition. It is interesting to see how he has put together such a incredulous argument. I have to agree that his argument is logical. However, much of the evidence is unreliable. Such stories as one would find in a supermarket tabloid. It is an interesting but hard to believe perspective?

An Accurate, Carefully Researched Portrait of the Clintons.......2002-12-11

Unlike Peggy Noonan's trashy tome about Hillary Clinton which I lambasted in another review, this book was excellent, being factual, carefully researched and well written. The author delves into family histories of both Clintons, which helps the reader to better understand how their upbringing shaped their personalities. Oppenheimer interviews numerous friends and relatives who were close to the Clintons, and disputes some inaccuracies found in other Clinton biographies.
Of all the books I've read on Bill and Hillary, this one portrayed them the most objectively and fairly. It is not a one-sided, gossipy tell-all but a careful study of the Clinton's marriage and an analysis of their very diverse, but complimentary personalities: Hillary as a strident, intense, ambitious perfectionist from the Midwest and Bill, an affable, laid-back, shrewd, womanizing Southern boy. Their strengths helped them to achieve their goal of the Presidency; but their weaknesses proved to be their undoing.
Theirs is not a marriage of love but one of raw political ambition and power, a business partnership in which a deal was struck before their nuptials. Of the two, Hillary comes off the worse. Her foul mouth and vicious "go-for-the-jugular" attacks against opponents and friends are legendary. Bill, clearly eclipsed and overpowered by his strong-willed wife, resorts to behaving like an oversexed school boy, unzipping his fly at the drop of a hat. Possibly his excessive womanizing is because Hillary castrates him on a daily basis, so poor Bill has to make sure his equipment grows back and is in working order....hmm, that sounds like a familiar Greek myth, only instead of entails being ripped out by a vulture and growing back overnight, we have...,well you get the picture.

This book is out of print, but if you can snare a used copy here at Amazon.com, you're in for an intelligent, enjoyable read.

Not a hatchet job.......2002-11-19

I first saw this book referenced in Michael Tomasky's Hillary's Turn. Tomasky described this book as a hatchet job. State of a Union is far from a negative attack on the former First Couple, and actually paints a more sympathetic portrait of the Clintons than their most fawning sycophants usually do. State of a Union is little more than fluff but gives a good overview of a complex and nuanced political partnership. Jerry Oppenheimer manages to give childhood and marital details without dabbling in pure psychobabble, but this is a beach book and not history---and doesn't pretend to be anything else.

Incorrect data damages author's credibility.......2002-03-19

Okay, so it's a small thing, but on page 92 of the Harper Collins hard-cover edition, the author states that one of Hillary's relatives graduated from Stevens College in COLUMBUS, MISSOURI. NOT! Stephens College is in Columbia, Missouri, which is also the location of the University of Missouri, touted by many, ironically, as the leading journalism school in the country. I really do not understand errors like this. Is it just plain sloppiness or carelessness? In the presence of a stupid mistake like this, are there possible other research mistakes, larger ones, perhaps? I will add that this book, notwithstanding the fact that after page 92, I read with some degree of skepticism, was fundamentally a good read, well organized, informative, and interesting.

A Preference for Fluff.......2001-02-23

I'm not familiar with the author but having finished most of the book by now, I consider it to be about 20% truth, and 80% fiction. To be honest, it is one of the most seedy collections of anecdotes I've seen on the Clintons matched only by the "accidentally revealed" impeachment depositions and documents of his second term. If ever there was evidence of grudge and harrassment against Hillary, this surely speaks for itself. How much is accurate is debateable, of course, but even a reasonably careful reading shows the book to have incorporated every negative possible of the interpretation of Clinton's Presidency and his wife's influence and involvement. Even a logical reading indicates that most could not be true, or if true, is such a distorted picture of the two lives that it renders it both inexplicable and unbelievable that anyone would spend time constructing supposedly factual information such as this and marketing it as nonfiction. For anyone who was even the most casual observor of the two terms, it will surely bring forth concerns of how authors use their writings to distort events, personalities, and circumstances to create an illusion of truth based upon circumstantial evidence and assumption. To the gullible, it can be quite damaging since it is presented as truth, and due to the quotations, reads like truth. If I had written the book, and was trying to discredit the subject, I couldn't have done a better job. No one knows exactly how much of previous books and materials published contain accurate information about the Clintons, events, or their relationship together, this is not likely to be one of them. But each person will have to decide for himself/herself. Good luck!

Engaging, Captivating, and Unique.......2001-10-20

Hardly the pity-fest that an earlier Amazon reviewer would have you take it for, Noel Polk's Outside the Southern Myth is a fascinating glimpse into a South that, although probably closer to the South that most Southerners live in, often goes ignored in literature, television, music, and film in favor of depictions of hard-drinkin' good ol' boys or genteel aristocrats. Sure, the South has plenty of both (though I haven't seen a white linen suit or a mint julep in a while), but Polk's book complicates the traditional view of Southern life and shows that a middle-class Southern experience can be just as rich, tragic, perplexing, and worthy of study as any Faulkner novel.

Unnecessary Self-Pity.......2001-02-23

This is a self-revealing and boring book. Polk argues that he is not a product of his Southern background, no, he is somehow "better." But even if he abhors the fact, nothing could document more thoroughly his being solidly within "the Southern Myth" than his own pronouncements. So he is ashamed of bare feet, who cares? What on earth convinced the press to publish this vain cry of unnecessary self-pity.
