      5 out of 5 stars Excellent & expedient service.......2006-07-13

The textbook was brand new and was wrapped in cellophane. Class began the following week, and the book arrived that week-end which gave me enough time to complete assignments in a timely fashion.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2005-10-10

I used this book in my MBA program. This is a very good resource. It is researched based with many articles that are relatively short and to the point.

5 out of 5 stars A excellent collection of the classic readings........2000-12-24

The editors of the book have included in a single volume the classics. The articles include those authored by Kurt Lewin, Chris Argyris, Edgar Schein, Gareth Jones, C.K. Prahalad & Jeffrey Pfeffer besides many others. The latest edition published in 2000 include 16 new readings. Useful resource material for students of organisational behaviour and organisational change. The strategies described in some of the readings could be usefully applied in a variety of work settings. HR practioners and those in human resources development will find some of the articles valuable in crafting policies and renewal of training strategies. To sum it, in the words of the editors, "The field of organisation development is fun and exciting. We hope this anthology will convey some of that sense of excitement." I have discovered that sense of excitement when I read the articles in the book. I will continue to refer to them from time to time.

The story of how mankind first came to understand what the microwave background describes is related. The first rate science done by the entire COBE team is a great
example of what people are capable of.

Mather's account of the COBE project and its science is a priceless account since he was the head scientist of the project. He writes about the cosmology as well as the instrument science in a very easy to understand way.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative..One of Best Scientific Journals I've read.......1999-04-03

This is a great book. And every physicist, future-physicist, or any science lover should really read this book. One of best ways to get the brief summary of whole history of cosmology, while learning about the satellite that proves one of most famous theory we have in physics: big bang. I had borrowed this from library, and I loved it so much, I went ahead and bought a copy, and am in process of re-reading it. Really cool. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars If this one doesn't make you laugh and weep, I surrender........1996-12-17

the very first light is a luminous book, filled with the joys and sorrows of physical experimentation at its best. This is some of the best science journalism I have ever read. I know some of the people so lovingly and painstakingly described: they are honest portraits, beaut- ifully rendered. The range of emotions runs the gamut: the highs, the lows, the trill of discovery, the constant re- trenching to make experimental packages of equiptment cheaper, smaller, cheaper, fool proof. This is one of the most human books ever written about scientists. Please, don't miss it.

                    Book Description

In this comprehensive history of symbiosis theory--the first to be written--Jan Sapp masterfully traces its development from modest beginnings in the late nineteenth century to its current status as one of the key conceptual frameworks for the life sciences. The symbiotic perspective on evolution, which argues that "higher species" have evolved from a merger of two or more different kinds of organisms living together, is now clearly established with definitive molecular evidence demonstrating that mitochondria and chloroplasts have evolved from symbiotic bacteria. In telling the exciting story of an evolutionary biology tradition that has effectively challenged many key tenets of classical neo-Darwinism, Sapp sheds light on the phenomena, movements, doctrines, and controversies that have shaped attitudes about the scope and significance of symbiosis. Engaging and insightful, Evolution by Association will be avidly read by students and researchers across the life sciences.

                      Book Description

Of Older Men and Pretty Young Things is a semi-fictional examination of life. The book takes a cynical look a lot of the things we hold dear in life (lying, cheating, young girls, children, religion and so on) and also some things we do not hold so dear (like in-laws, those ogres!). Why do we fall in love with the women we do? Beauty doesnÂ't seem to be the answer because we do not always fall for the prettiest young things. Some of the things we do in life are also the direct causes of illnesses like high blood pressure. Trysting with school girls, for instance, is a thrilling, liberating, orgasmic thing, but it is also the cause of much misery, both emotional and financial. Then there is the matter of Christianity and the mystery that is Jesus ChristÂ… Well, every facet of life is a source of miseryÂ…or humourÂ… Happy reading!

I read this book in one long gulp! It's hilarious and a must read for anyone with a sense of humour. Can't wait for this author's name book. Unfortunately I've not been able to find anything else by him. If anyone knows of another book, please let me know. Of Older Men is worth more than the cover price. You won't regret!

                      Book Description

The life of Robert F. Kennedy resembled two sides of the same coin. One side shows the hard-driven, ruthless prosecutor, battering witnesses, ignoring their civil rights. The other side shows his absolute belief in God. This is the side that gave him faith in himself and an undeniable sympathy for the poor and disadvantaged.

While I doubted so slim a book could contain much insight, I was hopeful as I read the book jacket & skimmed the pages that this would be a much-needed corrective to all the half-truths, negativity, and speculation that has afflicted even such promising RFK efforts as Evan Thomas's book of a couple years ago.

I was really disappointed! First, the book is even slimmer than it looks because there are several pages of photographs in there. There are also some really glaring errors of grammar, punctuation, and even fact in this book. One that comes immediately to mind: in the bibliography, Sidorenko indicates he relied on Jeff Shesol's "Mutual Contempt," which is listed as being published in 1977. Jeff Shesol wasn't even in in high school in 1977 (his book was actually published in 1997). The writing style is clunky. Take this example from page 130: "Time sobered heads inebriated by shock. Robert Kennedy began a process that took about six days. Most meetings the president did not attend. Security required that all seem normal at the White House." Inebriated by shock? WHAT process? I thought the subject was RFK, not the president.

Actually, I blame the editors & publisher far more than the author. This book is part of some series called "Lives & Legacies," but there's no explanation of what the series is all about, and if this is how the whole series is edited, I wouldn't buy another book in it at all. In fact, I'd avoid any books put out by this seemingly bush-league publisher.

4 out of 5 stars Rooted in religion.......2001-07-24

If there's one thing that makes Robert Kennedy enduring, it is the real and symbolic gestures of genuine hope and belief in the American political system he produced in the hearts and minds of Americans.

Mr. Sidoranko's treatment of Kennedy is stellar, fresh, and thankfully does not succumb to the heroizing syndrome that we can so easily criticize in other Kennedy accounts and authors.

This book, refraining from distracting hyperbole, maintains a compassionate leaning-towards but fair-minded, even sometimes, somewhat dispassionate tone.

Sidoranko's convincingly sustained argument for Robert Kennedy's spiritual/religious dynamic will make a useful contribution to further examination of an extremely important politician and historical figure of ever-increasing national interest and debate.

                      4 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2001-07-13

The focus of this book--RFK's spirituality as a genuine force of his character and life--is a warm-blooded debate and is a highly charged and complex idea, deserving of closer scrutiny. RFK aficionados will appreciate Sidorenko's sophisticated understanding of Kennedy's disparate impulses and his indiosynchratic basis of belief and faith, while the general reader will enjoy his uncluttered analysis. Engaging reading especially for those new to Kennedy.

5 out of 5 stars It takes an outsider...........2001-06-29

The author poses some interesting questions: Did, as author Ronald Steel has suggested, Bobby Kennedy use the rhetoric of religion--along with civil rights and liberal causes as a ruse for personal gain?

Was Kennedy a chameleon using change simply to feed his personal ambitions?

Or wasn't it more to the point that growth was a constant theme in Kennedy's life--"a steady evolution and not based on epiphanic interruptions"?

Author Konstantine Sedorenko is very convincing when he says Faith was "neither politics nor pandering" for Robert Kennedy and that his spiritual and religious training kept him from embracing only worldly ambitions.

True, ambition brought him to the edge, but, as the author smartly shows, worldly purpose fused with religious imperatives and values in Bobby's case, and the final leap into national politics, the political and social issues of his day, and finally, the presidential pool "came from his deep moral essence."

Is worldly purpose necessarily at odds with religious and moral values or principals and standards? Bobby Kennedy's history and story, if one stands back and attempts to view objectively--as perhaps only an outsider can--would indicate quite the opposite.

Kennedy's legacy indeed, to quote Sedorenko, "set the stage whereby future politicians could lead with no less conviction and hope."

Finally, one thing that definitely can be said about Robert F. Kennedy: he never pulled any punches--not with his cohorts and not with the American public. Neither does Sedorenko in this dynamic portrait of a most complex man--one who could and firmly did--take a moral stance in a time when America needed "more than the advice cold war tacticians could supply."

                      3 out of 5 stars Provocative.......2001-06-26

Played out against the backdrop of the turbulent 1960's the author tackles the complex life of RFK, a man of contrasting, often contradictory personal and public policies, views and actions, and shapes his story into a brisk and fairly compelling narrative that reflects the lasting effect of Bobby Kennedy on the politics of our times. Kennedy was a puzzling politician, but Mr. Sidorenko renders a comprehensive story of his life and the role his spiritual dimension played in shaping his life, his politics and policy, and ultimately history.

                      Very good reading.

                      Book Description

On November 18, 1999, a tragic accident at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, claimed the lives of twelve young people and seriously injured twenty-seven others when the annual bonfire to celebrate the University of Texas versus Texas A&M Thanksgiving football game collapsed during the final stages of construction.

Eleven young people died at the scene, but the twelfth victim, Timothy Doran Kerlee, Jr., lived almost forty-two hours before succumbing to his injuries. Seven months after his death, his parents left their secular life in Memphis, Tennessee, and moved to College Station to work as volunteers in campus ministry at the very school where their son had died. What happened to cause this couple to make such a life-changing decision?

The Chance to Say Goodbye answers that question, while telling the tale of a young hero, who, on that fateful night, refused aid for himself until his friends had been helped. Author Janice Cross Kerlee offers help to parents who have lost children. She assists them in dealing with their grief and teaching their friends how to help in a time of need. Finally, The Chance to Say Goodbye testifies to the mighty works of God and His ever-present love.

I had hoped for a story that might help me in dealing with those I counsel. While it is a well-told story of one young man's life and influence, it is of no help at all in assisting other grieving parents who might not appreciate the extravagant emphasis on the Texas A&M spirit and on their son, rather than on their personal struggles with grief.

This is a thorough biography of one of the century's most important and misunderstood leaders-Nikita Khruschev. Using newly uncovered archival material, William Tompson concentrates on Khrushchev's years in power and his role in shaping the development of the Soviet Union after Stalin.

4 out of 5 stars Informative political biography.......2004-04-03

There really isn't an exagerration in the book's title. This is a political biography pure and simple. There is little personnel information on Khrushchev or on his family life. Krushchev, as the author paints him, was a more complicated man than the shoe pounding and Cuban Missile crisis botching buffoon he's remembered as in the West.

As an aside, in my time living in Russia I found that Khrushchev is held in somewhat high regard by Russians today [who would back the authors portrait of him as a reformist]. His time as Chairman of the party resulted in relative openness after the oppression of the Stalinist era. Under his direction there was more focus on consumer goods, on housing, a release of political prisoners and more freedom in the arts.

As a result of his iniciatives many of the apartments in Moscow, St Petersburg and other Russian cities date back to this era. It was he who gave the famous anti-Stalin "secret" [but deliberately leaked] speech to the XXth party congress. [It's ironic that while within the Soviet Union a freer climate was allowed to continue for a time within those countries in the Soviet sphere no anti-communist activities were allowed.]

The book functions well as an informative look at the rise of Khruschev through the ranks of the communist party [CPSU]. The purges of the late '30s were his fasttrack to the upper ranks of the CPSU as he took over the positions of the relieved [and usually arrested] former officials.

An fact-filled look at Khrushchev's political life, it promises no more than a political biography and on this it delivers. Those looking for personnel information and a gossipy narrative should look elsewhere. Those looking for political biography and insight to the rise of Nikita should be satisfied.

This book is required for numerous college courses and is an excellent resource on the Khrushchev years in the Soviet Union, including extensive references to numerous primary sources. However, I am unsure as to the legitimacy of the author. The copy of this book carried by the Colorado State University library lacks a dust jacket. Who is he? Is he a kook? Does he distill vodka in his basement? I just don't know.

Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyns startling book led, almost 30 years later, to Glasnost, Perestroika, and the Fall of the Wall. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich brilliantly portrays a single day, any day, in the life of a single Russian soldier who was captured by the Germans in 1945 and who managed to escape a few days later. Along with millions of others, this soldier was charged with some sort of political crime, and since it was easier to confess than deny it and die, Ivan Denisovich confessed to high treason and received a sentence of 10 years in a Siberian labor camp. In 1962, the Soviet literary magazine, Novy Mir, published a short novel by an unknown writer named Solzhenitsyn. Within 24 hours, all 95,000 copies of the magazine containing this story were sold out. Within a week, Solzhenitsyn was no longer an obscure math teacher, but an international celebrity. Publication of the book split the Communist hierarchy, and it was Premier Khrushchev himself who read the book and personally allowed its publication.

Anyone fascinated or horrified by the story of the Branch Davidian sect and the storming of their Waco, Texas, compound by law enforcement authorities in April 1993 will want to read David Thibodeau's compelling first-person account. Thibodeau, one of only nine Branch Davidian survivors of the attack (in which 74 people--including several children--were killed), begins by telling readers what brought him to Waco. We meet David Koresh as Thibodeau first met him: a fellow rock musician, an abused child from a troubled family who didn't finish high school and was fond of guns but loved to talk about the Bible. The memoir offers what appears to be an honest portrayal of life among the Branch Davidians, including the sham marriages in which men were expected to be celibate while Koresh had sex with most of the women--and girls as young as 12 years old. Thibodeau strongly denies other charges of child abuse within the community; children were punished and spanked, he says, but not beaten.

The second half of the book details the Branch Davidians' dealings with federal agents. In light of subsequent government admissions, including a partial recantation in 1999 of previous denials that the tear gas used in the assault could have been incendiary, Thibodeau's detailed account of the storming of the compound and the fire that followed is chilling. Why did people follow Koresh? As Thibodeau remembers an early conversation with one of his followers, previously a theology student in England, "He has the answers to my questions." But A Place Called Waco ends with more questions than answers. --Linda Killian

                          Book Description

When he first met the man who called himself David Koresh, David Thibodeau--who had never been religious in the slightest--was drumming for a rock band that was going nowhere fast. Intrigued, and frustrated by his stalled music career, Thibodeau gradually became a follower and moved to the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. He remained there until April 19, 1993, when the compound was stormed and burnt to the ground, and 74 people were killed. Thibodeau was one of the nine who survived the attack. None of the survivors has ever told the inside story of life--and death--at Mount Carmel.

In this book, Thibodeau explores why so many intelligent people came to believe that Koresh was truly divinely inspired. We meet the men, women and children of Mount Carmel, and experience the day-to-day life of the community. Thibodeau is brutally honest--about himself, Koresh and the other members--and provides a revelatory look both at life at Mount Carmel and at one man's spiritual journey. But A Place Called Waco is just as brutally honest when it comes to dissecting the actions of the United States government. Thibodeau marshals an array of evidence, some of it never previously revealed, to prove that our own government caused the Waco tragedy--including the fires. The result is a memoir that reads like a thriller--each page taking us closer to the eventual inferno--and a compelling eyewitness account of egregious wrong-doing and cover-up on the part of the U.S. government.

I had David's father as a teacher in Junior High and High School on Islesboro, ME and can remember clearly in '93 when he 'suddenly' took time off. His students were left wondering what happened to him? Where did he go? What was Waco all about? David' book clearly puts words to an event, sometimes there are no words for, only silence. Although I've never met younger David, I have met the Senior and if he's incrediblely gifted and talented -- a bank full of knowledge -- than David the young eloquently and rawly gives voice to his nightmare -- of survival -- at a time when there were only questions as to whether he would. Honest, Brash, Brilliant and lastly Human.

4 out of 5 stars Disturbing and Fascinating.......2006-09-09

David Thibodeau was a young LA musician when a chance meeting with the charismatic David Koresh led to his involvement with the Branch Davidian community outside Waco, Texas. This book is a well-written, articulate account of his life within that community and the events leading to the tragic 1993 inferno that claimed the lives of all but nine of the members.

Thibodeau honors his community by putting a human face on a group of people who have been badly demonized by the media. The author does a decent job of explaining the group's appeal, but he is also honest in his descriptions the darker sides of the group. He appears, however, to remain a true believer in his path. While he does address the discomfort he felt that Koresh chose to engage in such behaviors as having sex with underage girls in the community, he falls short of asking the hard questions that observing such behavior in a spiritual leader should require someone to ask.

It's easy to get distracted from those tougher questions, however, by the chilling depiction of the government siege against the Branch Davidians. While it was clear that Koresh himself had broken some laws, it is equally clear from this account that the government's heavy-handed approach to the situation resulted in the horrific deaths of many people who were entirely innocent of any crime other than believing in something unorthodox. Thibodeau's account of the facts surrounding the siege, the fire, and the resulting investigation is deeply, deeply disturbing, and is crucial reading for anyone who is concerned about the state of civil rights in the US.

5 out of 5 stars Balanced and true........2006-03-31

David Thibodeau, in writing this book, has said that he wanted to present a balance account of the almost total annihilation of the religious community known as Mount Carmel, home for the Branch Davidians. (Eight adults and one teen survived.) I believe he did exactly that. Thibodeau had been a late comer to this community, brought in by its charismatic leader David Koresh. But, he was there long enough to witness the good and the bad that existed and he ended up being a survivor of the carnage. He does not try to whitewash the possible illegal weapons charge or the definite statutory rape and child-endangering acts that were committee there. On the other hand, he doesn't paint the Feds with an all-tarnishing brush either, as he admits he doesn't know who fired the first shots (or if in the last climatic attack any shots were fired) and he doesn't know how the fatal fire was begun. What he does is present a detailed description of overkill as he explains how the government used tanks, deadly and inflamable teargas, and bullet-strafing helicopters to attack this group of 62 adults and 21 children huddled in their ramshackle structure. Ironically, he considers much of the blame falls on the newly-appointed Attorney General Janet Reno, who in her first days of administration didn't want to appear soft in the face of the bullying tactics of the FBI and the ATF, and thus capitulated to their massive attack plans that were put into affect just days before Koresh had promised to surrender. Thibodeau gives us, I believe, a true accounting of the life lead by the citizens of Mount Carmel, the overpowering attacks of our government, and the cover-up investigations that follow. I would hope that one of the results of this book would be to help assure that there are no more such incidents in America's future. Mr. Thibodeau, a job well done.

If they were so peaceful then why did they not just exit the compound? Why have such a long standoff which they knew would end that way? Overall, this book answers a lot of questions and raises more. The conduct of the followers was atrocious and the conduct of the FBI was less than professional, but I must say that I don't feel bad for any of the people that died other than the children who had been raped, physically abused (spanking), and never given a chance.

Most everyone knows about the federal government's disastrous debacle at Waco, Texas back in 1993. We have watched the testimonies, the congressional investigations, and the flames engulfing the building that housed the Branch Davidian religious sect. Some of us have even read books on the event, and many have been written. This book, written by survivor David Thibodeau, is one of the best yet.

Thibodeau was right there, in the middle of the standoff with ATF and FBI agents, so his perspective is unique from others who have written about the event from the outside. Starting with the time when he first met David Koresh while playing in various bands in Los Angeles, Thibodeau talks about his interest in the Branch Davidians and explains what got him involved in the group; why he became interested in religion after never having much interest or instruction during his youth; why he decided to follow Koresh and his teachings; why he decided to stay at Mt. Carmel during the siege; how he handled the media and press following his escape from the fire; and his post- Mt. Carmel life, touring the country as an informational speaker.

Thibodeau has a lot of anger to share in this book, not toward Koresh or the other members of the religious group, but toward the press and the U.S. government. He fully admits that Koresh wasn't perfect and that certain actions taken by Koresh (like sleeping with young girls) wasn't right and should have landed him in jail. But above all, he is most scornful of the media and the U.S. government. The members of the media acted like lap dogs during the siege, reporting on anything told to them by the ATF and FBI as if it were absolute truth. Thibodeau and the other members of the Davidians were saddened and angered by, for example, the reference to their group as a cult and the reference to their building as a compound. The various government reporting agencies promoted these terms to turn the public against the Davidians. Thibodeau is correct in his assertions about the government's actions in this area, and he makes some good points about this. It is true that Koresh himself was a little strange, but he was no real threat and the things he taught were hardly radical. If his teachings qualify the Branch Davidians as a cult, then many mainstream Protestant groups would also be cults. It is known, too, that the FBI deliberately prevented the release of a video tape that featured the different members of the group talking to the camera about their families and lives because the FBI was worried that, once the public saw this tape, they would see that these people were pretty ordinary and it would sway public opinion over to the Davidian's side.

The government's handling of the investigation was purely political, with Democrats taking the side of the ATF and FBI, in order to protect the Clinton administration, and the Republicans taking the side of religious freedom in order to make Clinton and his administration look bad. Thibodeau talks about how sickening it was to watch this unfold. No one really seemed to care about truth or justice. All they cared about was protecting their own fellow politicians or making the opposing politicians look bad.

The writing in this book is excellent, and Thisbodeau was very wise in making the decision to hire a professional editor to help with the work. Other victims of well- publicized tragedies have also written books, but many of them rely on their own amateurish writing skills to carry them through, often resulting in a book that is sub-par at best and that often fails to be as effective as it could have been. The writing in this book, thanks to the assistance of Leon Whiteson, is nearly flawless and it kept my attention throughout the reading.

Thibodeau spends his time touring the nation now, giving speeches to different groups around the country about what happened and what needs to be done in the future to prevent any more Wacos. He shows some strong courage in writing this book, openly admitting that certain actions taken by his own friends were wrong and were deserving of punishment. But he places the bulk of the blame on the ATF and FBI for starting all the trouble in the first place. Like Ruby Ridge, Waco is yet another example of what can happen when government power goes unchecked. And Thibodeau makes a strong case for reigning in the power of government in this well- written, personal book about the tragedy at Waco that killed more than eighty people.
