Since banking systems play a crucial role in maintaining the overall health of the economy, the adverse effects of poorly supervised systems may be quite severe. Without some form of vigilant external oversight, banking systems could fall prey to excessive risk taking, moral hazard, and corruption. Prudential supervision provides that oversight, using government regulation and monitoring to ensure the soundness of the banking system and, by extension, the economy at large.

The contributors to this thoughtful volume examine the current state of prudential supervision, focusing on fundamental issues and key pragmatic concerns. Why is prudential supervision so important? What kinds of excess must it guard against? What particular forms does it take? ISS, and earlier space stations.......2006-09-06

As mentioned by the other reviewer, the coverage of this book ends in 2001, and thus does not include the addition of trusses in 2002 (or activities scheduled for 2006 and later). As with similar books on Mir and Soyuz, the focus is on station operations in orbit, rather than construction, engineering, or the science program.

The main downside, however, is that the first half of this book does not actually cover the International Space Station, but instead provides an overview of operations at earlier stations: Skylab, the Salyut stations, and Mir.

There are numerous high-quality black and white photos which illustrate the phases of construction between 1998 and 2001.

Excellent Overview of the Building of the ISS........2002-07-16

I have worked on various aspects of the International Space Station (ISS) from hardware design, maintenance and EVA operations for over thirteen years and I found this book to be an extremely well researched overview of the design and construction of this massive space project. For those readers looking for detailed descriptions of the engineering designs of the ISS, this book does not contain them and only provides the most general of descriptions (at least from my point of view as a NASA engineer). It does, however, provide an excellent summary of the history, on-orbit operations, and construction, of what has been termed "The greatest engineering project in the history of mankind."

As one would expect, the book opens with a historical overview of the world's first space stations: NASA's Skylab and the Russian's Salyut 1, and covers the lessons learned from these early endeavors. After these introductory chapters, the next section examined the successful Russian Salyut series of space stations that set many endurance records and demonstrated that complex on-orbit repairs are possible. In contrast to the Russian effort during this time, the NASA space station efforts were directly primarily at numerous paper studies.

The book next moves into the development of the US Space Station Freedom (SSF) projects, from the go ahead directive given by President Ronald Reagan, through the first George Bush years till its finale during the first year of the Clinton administration and covers all the early designs like the Dual Keel through the various Clinton redesign Options. While many may view the SSF project as mainly a paper study, it is clear that this project had a significant impact on the final design, development and operation of the ISS.

Again, in contrast to NASA's paper studies, the Russian space program had successful on-orbit programs with the Salyut space station and the Mir. These programs continued to show that humans could easily work in space by performing routine maintenance and emergency repairs. It should be noted that the cosmonauts aboard Mir still hold the endurance record over a full and continuous year in space. I should point out, as is documentation here, that a lot more has happen in the Russian space program, both good and bad, than is ever reported in the press.

The final section of the book, which is approximately half of the book, examines the construction of the ISS from the Shuttle-Mir partnership to the final mission of 2001. This portion of the book thoroughly examines the inclusion of the Russians into the NASA project and the various problems that occurred during the early stages of this joint venture including funding and numerous cultural differences. Once these problems had been over come, the book chronicles, in great detail, each ISS construction mission from liftoff to landing (or burn up for the Progress resupply missions). For each mission, the authors cover liftoff and any associated problems, the crew, the Extra-Vehicular Activities (EVAs), what was added, maintenance, crew rotation, etc. This book is so complete that I expect it will become the standard outlining the construction of the ISS for years to come.

A few final thoughts. As is typical of the Springer-Praxis series of astronomy and space exploration books, this book also contains many numerous high quality photographs and drawings, which I come to expect from this publisher. Furthermore, it avoids most of the NASA-ese use of acronyms to describe just about every piece of hardware. I found only one minor error and that was only related to the naming of an EVA construction tool. And finally, since the ISS is a work in progress, the book only covers those missions completed by the end of 2001 and in the future will either need to be updated or have a second volume.

Good depiction of an important Civil War battle in the West.......2007-07-01

Abraham Lincoln always held a special place for General William Rosecrans because of his victory at the Battle of Murfreesboro (or Stone's River). This was a narrow thing, with the forces of Braxton Bragg coming very close to victory. But the star-crossed Confederate general ended up withdrawing, leaving Rosecrans' Union forces to claim victory by holding the field of battle.

Lincoln's gratitude is understandable, given the disaster at Fredericksburg and Grant's and Sherman's lack of success at Vicksburg. Rosecrans' victory was a rare bright spot at this time.

But how much of a bright spot, really, was it? That is why the story of this battle is important.

This is the story of two armies each planning the same first move in battle--an attack on the other side's right wing. Bragg was lucky to get in the first blow. His forces rolled up much of Rosecrans' right. The stubborn resistance of Sheridan and others slowed the onslaught. By the end of the day, lines were stabilized and Rosecrans had held--but just barely.

Bragg expected the Union forces to withdraw--but they did not. The Union generals met that evening to decide what to do and Rosecrans ultimately made the call to hold his position.

The next day, Bragg ordered a sanguinary attack and it was beaten off with heavy casualties. His withdrawal from the field followed.

This is a straightforward description of the battle. It may not be the best written account of a battle, but it moves the story along nicely and provides ample detail to get a sense of what was happening and what was at stake. All in all, worth reading. . . .

Thorough but dry.......2005-08-05

The battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River) is one of the most important neglected battles of the American Civil War - or one of the most neglected important battles, if you like. The battlefield is also a good illustration of the challenges of battlefield preservation, since large parts of it are preserved while other parts are buried underneath urban and suburban sprawl. A good history and a good battlefield guide would be welcome.

Unfortunately, "No Better Place to Die" is not that book. In fact, I'd say that it's really more of an example of how *not* to write military history. Almost all of the book is a descriptive, blow by blow account of the battle, often at the regimental and brigade level. This means that Cozzens does not provide a sufficiently frequent birds-eye view of the battle to supplement the action on the ground and to explain the choices people were making. His prose style is also pretty dry, though quotations from diaries help liven it up considerably.

The book also does not have enough maps. Especially in a blow-by-blow book, an abundance of well-designed maps showing the action are essential and would really help tell the story.

Despite its weaknesses, I managed to read the book to the end, largely because I was in Murfreesboro at the time. If you are physically there, the first chapter is good for setting the stage. In fact, Cozzens would have done better to write the other chapters more like the first. Moreover, if you are in town, you can get a sense of the battlefield without maps (and you'll have the park service maps after all). The book is also helpful because you will meet some characters whose monuments you might see around town.

I haven't read any of the other books available on the battle, so it may be true (as some other reviewers claim) that this one is the best available. But you'll probably note that most of the reviewers talk about the battle, not the book. It's a disappointment.

Detailed study of a crucial yet neglected battle.......2005-06-28

Few major battles of the Civil War have been more neglected than Stones River. It was among the bloodiest battles of the war, and started a ripple effect that would end with the defeat of the South, yet there are less than half a dozen books on it, and only the most devoted students of the war know much of anything about it. Peter Cozzens' book, `No Better Place to Die', is perhaps the best single book detailing and explaining the significance of this nearly forgotten battle.
December of 1862 had been a very bad month for the Union. General Burnsides and the Army of the Potomac had been horribly defeated at the Battle of Fredericksburg, and Grant and Sherman had been stopped cold in their attempt to take Vicksburg. The Union badly needed a victory, and another defeat could have been disastrous. Stones River was fought between the Union's Army of the Cumberland and the Confederate's Army of Tennessee over three days; from New Years Eve 1862 till January 2, 1863. Though the battle was considered by many to be a tactical draw, and both sides claimed victory, General Bragg and his Army of Tennessee retreated, conceding middle Tennessee to The Army of the Cumberland and the Union, and setting the stage for opening up the back door to the heart of the Confederacy. Though many today have forgotten the significance of this battle, its importance was not lost on President Lincoln, who after the battle wrote to General Rosecrans, commander of the Union forces at Stones River, "I can never forget whilst I remember anything, that... you gave us a hard-earned victory, which had there been a defeat instead, the Nation could scarcely have lived over."
Cozzens is no great wordsmith, but his research is meticulous and his detail is exacting. `No Better Place to Die' is not so dry as the previous book of his that I have read, perhaps because though detailed, it is still a short book (just over 200 pages), and because he uses many interesting quotes from participants in the battle that add the color that his own words lack. It is, in my opinion, the best, clearest, and most detailed book on this important battle, and anyone who wants to seriously study the Civil War and understand how it was won in the western theater can ill afford to miss it.

A great book on an ignored battle.......2005-05-08

Like the book this review will be brief. As usual Mr. Cozzens writes an excellent book, and although some have complained that this book lacks narrative style, it's simply not true, I found this book to be highly entertaining. It gives by far the best account of the bloody fighting around the Stones River, far superior to McDonough's book which is the only other modern account of this battle. My only contentions are this, A) Stones River was a draw, it was also a strategic draw. Rosecrans was whipped psychologically, why else would he have allowed Bragg's heavily outnumbered army remain in it's position at Tullahoma for six months afterwards without challenging it? Like at Shiloh the Confederates had acheived tactical surprise, a surprise which Rosecrans never recovered from. In fact as Larry J. Daniels states in his excellent book "Days of Glory", the Army of the Cumberland was lucky to have survived Stones River. A glorious Union victory it was not, ROsecrans didn't pursue, the strategic situation hardly changed at all, and Rosecrans nearly lost his job for dilly dallying so long and displaying a McClellanesque style of generalship. And finally B) the book is too short. I wanted more, lots more. If Cozzens could write a huge book on Chickamauga, why not a huge book on my favorite battle Stones River? SO what, it's still a great book and highly recommended.

A Solid Study.......2004-07-15

Mr. Cozzens was educated in the law and it shows in his writing. The explanation of the battle is very solid, detailed, and to the point. There isn't a lot of color or background in any of his work, but it is first rate solid history! His research is rock solid and for all it's detail it does make for an enjoyable read.

Although it's a scholarly work, this is a compulsively readable book about one life rather senselessly destroyed by politics during a fascinating yet not widely understood era of our country's recent history.

In the early '90s, after a stint as a senior editor at the groundbreaking lesbian sex journal On Our Backs, Lisa Palac took charge of a new magazine called Future Sex. Tapping into the "cyber" ethos that permeated the Bay Area scene--Mondo 2000 was in its ascendancy, while Wired was still a full year away--the magazine achieved a quick burst of mainstream notoriety and became a longterm underground icon. But you won't need to don a full-body cybersex interface to appreciate Palac's The Edge of the Bed.

With disarming honesty and self-deprecating humor, Palac writes about how she began to gain control of her sexuality. When she found a boyfriend's stash of pornography, her kneejerk reaction was to tell him that if it didn't go, she would. He managed to convince her to watch a video with her; that led to another, and another...soon, Palac was renting her own tapes and started writing her own erotic stories.

Although sex-positive feminism can be a powerfully liberating philosophy, Palac does not sugarcoat the hardships. Not every sexual encounter was wonderful; sometimes there wasn't even any sex. ("I was a perfect candidate for cybersex," she drolly comments at one point. "I wasn't getting laid, I liked to masturbate, and I could type.") But the story of Palac's spiritual and physical awakening and her efforts to maintain honesty and integrity will continue to inspire long after they've finished titillating--and that's a mighty long time.

In February of 1994, I, along with many other horny college students around the nation, was fascinated by an Esquire article documenting "feminists who don't hate sex!" Lisa Palac had one of the more memorable lines as she attempted to describe the appeal of S/M; she called for her men to "degrade me when I ask you to." Obviously, this was not your average pundit, a fact emphasized by her résumé: co-founder of Future Sex magazine, producer of the Cyborgasm CD series and now author of an excellent memoir, The Edge of the Bed. Palac relates her upbringing, revisiting her Catholic childhood, her parents' loveless marriage and her subsequent attempts at establishing romantic relationships in the stormy sexual climate of San Francisco with an energetically bouncing prose and a self-deprecating gift for the dramatic. Along the way, she finds time to state her views on pornography, cybersex and sexual honesty, drawing you into her life with a magnetic charisma. She writes with a uniquely modern voice, one capable of tackling thorny issues with intelligence, irreverence and a quick wit. Hers is a life worth reading, and, with only 35 years behind her, there should be plenty more to come.

A Welcome Voice on Sex and Who We Are.......2001-01-24

I really enjoyed this book. Palac's approach to what can be such a loaded subject is playful and light. Her core idea is that each of our sexual identities is unique, and that we have a right, almost an obligation, to honor and explore it. She is tolerant of diversity, but at the same time she pulls no punches in condemning those who would belittle and shame us for our natural drives. Palac is/was a Roman Catholic, as am I, and her chapter on the role of the Church in robbing her of her sexual identity is very compelling. The idea that pornography can be healthy, and that women have a right to enjoy it, is an idea whose time has come. I give this book 5 stars because it is a welcome look at an aspect of our lives which is frequently stunted and shrouded with shame. Palac has opened a window letting in fresh air.

good but not great.......1999-10-01

Palac's book is good and gives us insight into her mind, but I was hoping to find more of a debate about whether pornography is good or evil. She doesn't really get into that. (If she did, yes, I know she'd come out on the side of good, but the point is to figure out _how_ she came to that conclusion.) The book is a little too much the story of her life -- but actually, that's what the title/blurb promise us, so really, I shouldn't be complaining.

A fantastic book that is guaranteed to resonate with you........1999-08-05

Lisa Palac has produced an incredibly honest portrayal of life. Though she is likely more well-known than most of us, her stories sound like they could be anyone's, regardless of sex, sexual orientation, sexual experiences, upbringing, religious beliefs, and whatever else you've got. Everyone has experiened a struggle between what they desire and what they feel is right for them to desire, and she tells of this struggle beatifully and without compromise. EVERYONE should read this.

A wonderful autobiography.......1998-09-16

Some people seem to think that being a feminist means that one is anti-erotic. This book is a chronicle of the life (to date) of a feminist woman who (gasp!) thinks that being turned on is good. It is more than that, of course -- The book tells of her childhood in a middle-class Catholic family, her feminist awakening, her erotic awakening, her professional and personal lives. It is well and clearly written, and provides a wondeful look at Ms. Palac's life and adventures.
