        Book Description

Jim Miller is famous for giving not just good service but legendary service. This is one of the reasons his company's sales have gone from $50,000 to $150,000,000 in twenty-five years. As founder and CEO of Miller Business Systems, he has built a reputation for being willing and able to do anything for his customers. But he is not just customer-oriented: He knows how to motivate his employees, and his upbeat, deeply personal approach to business is detailed in The Corporate Coach. Developed over twenty-five years of experience, Miller likens managing a company to coaching a team by joining customers and employees in a common cause. He believes in empowering people at every level of a company, in giving opportunities to develop, improve, and be creative, rather than languishing on the bench. Filled with anecdotes, specific "do this/don't do that" advice, and, above all, an attitude that is refreshing and inspiring, The Corporate Coach is essential reading for anyone who serves or manages people.

5 out of 5 stars About the Book- from the Publisher and Editorial Reviews..........2004-11-11

        Corporate Coach

        ANNOTATION
The founder and CEO of Miller Business Systems, who's built a solid reputation for going all-out for the customer and creating an upbeat, personable environment that keeps employees happy, loyal, and productive, presents a revolutionary work in which he likens managing a company to coaching a team by joining customers and employees in a common cause.

        FROM THE PUBLISHER
Jim Miller's bestselling book provides a revolutionary approach to team management and customer service that has helped his own company's sales rise from $50,000 to $150 million.

        FROM THE CRITICS
        Library Journal
The founder of Miller Business Systems, an office supply company, presents his principles of customer focus that have enhanced his company's success. Through analogies, Miller relates his leadership concepts to sports teams, which will surely appeal to executives with annual box seats! All the current good ideas on serving customers, such as hiring customer-oriented employees, focusing internal processes on serving customers, constant systems redesign based on customer feedback, and long-term relationships with customers can be found in this program, read by the author. Although Miller's ideas are soundly rooted in the extensive literature in this genre, he offers little new information. Also, with the significant problems inherent in today's professional sports business, his attempt to relate complex team-based organizational success to successful athletic teams is outdated. Invest instead in the more substantial work from Ron Zemke (Working with Jerks, S. & S. Audio, 1989).-Dale Farris, Groves, Tex.

        BookList - Barbara Jacobs
Another business book filled with sports metaphors? Yes and no, because Miller (helped by coauthor Brown) does have a story to tell. And when the subject is teamwork, the language of the playing fields is appropriate--though admittedly overused. In anecdotal fashion, he relates and demonstrates how working in teams solves all potential employer issues: customer service, creativity, quality, sales, problem solving, and employee loyalty. What's more, the advice proferred is specific and complete with samples--e.g., don't separate work from home; reward frequently; watch body language and rely on gut instincts when hiring; and involve employees in strategy as well as service. After this easy, non-high-falutin' read, those who didn't understand the power of working (and playing) together will grasp it; those managers who already practice teamwork just might find they've honed their skills.

4 out of 5 stars Management is not a place for a dictator........2000-12-02

The Corporate Coach is a good book for all would-be and new managers. The book reinforces the idea that a manager is not so much a boss as a supporter of his employees. Every company should hope that each manager understands he has employees entrusted to him and he must be able to maximize their effectiveness. To do this, the manager must be able to be a supporter, a cheerleader and a corrector of problems in an atmosphere that is positive. The Corporate Coach explains all of this from the know-how of someone who has done it and proven it's success. I give it to all my new managers to read.

        5 out of 5 stars A "how-to" on building a customer oriented team........1999-08-07

This book focuses on serving customers as the customer wants to be served not as the service provider wants to serve. The "Coach's Checklists" at the end of each chapter are each worth the price of the book. This book drives home the point that the ONLY difference between a business and sports team is the field they play on.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, Common Sense Tips For Providing Customer Service.......1998-06-26

An excellent case study of a company dedicated to customer service. If you want to retain and add customers, and retain high-quality service people who know the value of your customers and the true value of team-work, this book is a must-read.

                  Book Description

In Europe's Space Programme - to Ariane and Beyond, author Brian Harvey begins with the fledgling European rocket effort of the 1930s and the key pioneers of the period, examining the significance of the V-2 and the technological advances represented by its development. He shows how the Russians and Americans put their captured V-2s to work, but the European countries were slower to respond. Both Britain and France developed national space programmes in the 1950s and 1960s and the early attempts at European co-operation for launcher development - ELDO and ESRO - are described. The formation of the European Space Agency and the origins of the successful Ariane launcher programme are discussed and Europe's subsequent success in the world launcher market, its cutting-edge role in space applications and European manned spaceflight, are all described in detail.

                    Book Description

Catalysis is the acceleration of a chemical reaction by a catalyst, a substance that notably affects the rate of a chemical reaction without itself being consumed or altered. Since 1948, Advances in Catalysis has filled the gap between the papers that report on and the textbooks that teach in the diverse areas of catalysis research. The editors of and contributors to Advances in Catalysis are dedicated to recording progress in this area. Volume 49 reviews the directed evolution of enantioselective enzymes as catalysts for organic synthesis; dendrimers in catalysis and catalysis in ionic liquids; and the optimization of alkaline earth metal oxide and hydroxide catalysts for base-catalyzed reactions.

                    * Provides a comprehensive review of all aspects of catalytic research
                    * Contains in-depth, critical, state-of-the-art reports
                    * An indispensable source for researchers in academia and industry

This is a story of two friends. One, a nosy, compulsive, neatnik; the other, a fun-loving, hot-tempered exhibitionist. Together these two friends and sometimes rivals find themselves in everyday situations that are overly dramatized by their actions and reactions. Their greatest fun is poking fun at each other and life in general. These two characters, along with friends and foes, will take you down a very funny and nonsensical avenue of life experiences. Only in this case, it is not an avenue…it is a street…12th STREET!

                          Book Description

This never-before-published autobiography of Meta Berger (1873-1944) describes her transformation from a reticent young housewife to a committed and outspoken advocate for socialism, public education, women's rights, and peace. A daughter of German immigrants and the wife of Victor Berger-a Socialist Party leader, newspaper editor, and U.S. congressman from Milwaukee-Meta writes movingly of her husband's plight and her own during World War I, when his antiwar activism led to conviction under the Espionage Act and exclusion from Congress, an outcome that tested her faith in American democracy. One of the first women on the Milwaukee school board and on the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, Berger writes of her efforts on behalf of women's rights and educational reform in the Midwest and Washington, D.C. and conveys her enduring hope for a better world.

                          5 out of 5 stars A fascinating, informative contribution to women's studies.......2001-07-04

Meta Schlichting Berger was a Wisconsin wife, mother, schoolteacher, and politician at a time when women's role in public life (including their right to vote) were as contested as they were restricted. Ably edited by Kimberly Swanson, A Milwaukee Woman's Life On The Left is Meta Berger's autobiography and takes us through her transformation from a traditional wife and mother to a political activist who held elective office for thirty years. Married to Victor Berger in 1897, she saw her husband being elected to Congress as their first Socialist member. She was to eventually launch her own political campaign that would place her on the Milwaukee School Board and the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents. She was an activist in the peace and women's suffrage movements of the day, all while serving as confidant and advisor to her Congressman husband. Her husband was faced with twenty years in prison and denial of his Congressional seat because of his opposition to World War I. Meta helped him to win his eventual vindication before the United States Supreme Court. After her husband's death in 1929, Meta became even more radicalized than her husband ever was and embroiled in left-wing politics during the turbulent decade of the 1930s. A Milwaukee Woman's Life On The Left is a fascinating and informative contribution to women's studies in general, and Wisconsin history in particular.

                          Book Description

By the flip of a coin, Thomas Dionysius Clark became intertwined in the vast history of Kentucky. In 1928, Clark received scholarships to both the University of Cincinnati and to the University of Kentucky. Kentucky won the coin toss and the claim to one of the South's eminent historians.

In 1990, when the Kentucky General Assembly honored Clark by declaring him Kentucky's Historian Laureate for life, Governor Brereton Jones described Clark as "Kentucky's greatest treasure." Historian, advocate, educator, preservationist, publisher, writer, mentor, friend, Kentuckian—Dr. Clark has filled all these roles and more. Thomas D. Clark of Kentucky is a celebration of his life and career by just a few of those who have felt his influence and shared his enthusiasm for his adopted home state of Kentucky.

Dr. Clark was a family friend who did a great deal for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The book beautifully describles a life well spent as both a very kind man and a generous public servant.

This book is a treasure, a delightful read. It speaks to a broad range of interests. Fans of Elizabeth Bishop will enjoy learning about her relationship with Lota and her experiences during the 17 years she lived in Brazil. If you are interested in Brazilian history and politics, you will find a rare account of the early sixties in Rio de Janeiro, as the country headed toward military dictatorship. It is also a marvelous and tragic love story.

As an American living in Brazil for the past 20 years, I found it a fascinating account of how Lota and her country provided a haven for Bishop, an orphan prone to writer's block and alcoholism. Rare and Commonplace Flowers, read in addition to Bishop's letters, opens a whole new window on her writing. Ever since I read the original in Portuguese, in 1995, I have been convinced that it merits the attention of non-Portuguese speakers. Thanks to the excellent translation of Neil Besner, you've got it!
