        Product Description

Since its first publication (1963), Roxin's book has become a classic in the scientific literature of criminal law. The work is the most comprehensive monograph on the definition of participation in and perpetration of an offense in German criminal law. As always, in addition to the main part of the book, the new edition features a completely revised and extended "Conclusion 2006. Updated rules of the participation in and perpetration of an offense". The entire jurisdiction of the last decade to the questions of the offender rules is comprehensively documented and critically analysed. As a result, the rules of the "indirect perpetration of an offense by virtue of organizational machinery of power", which for the first time have been developed and incorporated from the jurisdiction in the last decade in this book, provide a particularly detailed appraisal. The author also tackles all new developments in the literature of the offender rules in a continuing form.

          Book Description

This book opens up a neglected chapter in the reception of Athenian drama, especially comedy; and it gives stage-centre to a particularly attractive and entertaining series of vase-paintings, which have been generally regarded as marginal curiosities. These are the so-called `phlyax vases', nearly all painted in the Greek cities of South Italy in the period 400 t0 360 BC. Up till now, they have been taken to reflect some kind of local folk-theatre, but Oliver Taplin, prompted especially by three that have only been published in the last twelve years, argues that most, if not all, reflect Athenian comedy of the sort represented by Aristophanes. This bold thesis opens up questions of the relation of tragedy as well as comedy to vase-painting, the cultural climate of the Greek cities in Italy, and the extent to which Athenians were aware of drama as a potential `export'. It also enriches appreciation of many key aspects of Aristophanic comedy: its metatheatre and self-reference, its use of stage-action and stage-props, its unabashed indecency, and its polarised relationship, even rivalry, with tragedy. The book has assembled thirty-six photographs of vase-paintings. Many are printed here for the first time outside specialist publications that are not readily accessible.

              Book Description

This volume contains evaluated data on the solubility of beryllium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, strontium hydroxide and barium hydroxide in water and in a number of electrolyte and nonelectrolyte solutions in water.
The alkaline earth hydroxides can be divided into two groups depending on the hydration of the solid. First, the sparingly soluble anhydrous beryllium, magnesium and calcium hydroxides, whose freshly precipitated solids are poorly crystalline and show decreasing solubility with aging, and whose solubility in water decreases with increasing temperature. Second, the soluble strontium and barium hydroxide octahydrates that form crystalline precipitates which do not show changes in solubility on aging, and whose solubility in water increases with increasing temperature.

                        Book Description

Archaeology has been a subject of endless fascination to scholars, students and the general public. For the past three decades, Prof. Brian Fagan has been the key narrator of the story of the past for many, through his textbooks, trade books and numerous magazine and journal articles. In recent years, Fagan has reported on the latest news, theories, and controversies in archaeology through his regular Timelines column in "Archaeology Magazine". In "Snapshots of the Past", Fagan collects many of these vignettes into a single work, leading the reader on a tour through time and space that ranges from the ascent of the human species to the public controversies that concern today's archaeologist. In these 30 brief chapters, the author offers readers a series of "snapshots" of the issues of greatest contemporary interest: the Eve hypothesis, the peopling of the New World, site looting, the translation of Mayan hieroglyphs, the domestication of animals, the impact of feminism on archaeology, the archaeology of slavery, and evidence of human cannibalism, among many others. Included among the articles are several pieces written specifically for this volume, including a description of the recent, spectacular cave art finds at Chauvet Grotto in France. For instructors of archaeology, the book is a handy compilation of brief, interesting cases to engage your students. For serious archaeologists, the book represents a collection of works of one of the important synthesizers of the field. For the avocational archaeologist, the book provides a fascinating, readable update on issues of current concern.

The attitude of the British public, too, was getting on their nerves. They had been prepared for fierce resistance. They had pictured the invasion as a series of brisk battles--painful perhaps, but exciting. They had anticipated that when they had conquered the country they might meet with the Glare of Hatred as they patrolled the streets. The Supercilious Stare unnerved them. There is nothing so terrible to the highly-strung foreigner as the cold, contemptuous, patronising gaze of the Englishman. It gave the invaders a perpetual feeling of doing the wrong thing.

_The Swoop_ is a parody of invasion stories common in Britain at the turn of the twentieth century, but (like Wodehouse's earlier parody, _William Tell Told Again_) it fails completely. A parody is supposed to exaggerate some existing characteristic of its target to the point of absurdity; Wodehouse instead introduces a brand new absurdity, the peaceful but childish conduct of nine separate invading armies. Except for one brief joke about the London County Council which will resonate with modern residents of London, it fails completely to grip or to amuse. Wodehouse's very next book, _Mike_, was a turning point in his career, with its introduction of the character Psmith. The only interest in _The Swoop_ for modern readers is to accentuate the contrast with his vintage work.

Legendary humorist P.G. Wodehouse was only embarking on his long, prestigious literary career when he wrote "The Swoop! Or, How Clarence Saved England." It's a very brief novel, lacking in Wodehouse's usual complexity, but it's still a quirky little read.

A faithful Boy Scout, Clarence is one of those kids who worries a lot about their country -- almost too much. He belongs to a pleasantly staid family who think he's a little nuts, because of his constant moans about how England has deteriorated. But it seems that he might be at least partly right when German prince invades during tea.

Nine other hostile armies invade England, much to the indignation of the populace. Unfortunately, the English don't put up much of a resistance, since "the Socialists had condemned the army system as unsocial." And suddenly Clarence and the Boy Scouts are the thing standing between Endland and total occupation.

"At last I begin to realise the horrors of an invasion -- for the invaders." Wodehouse wrote this amusing little book before World War II -- during that war, the idea of Germans invading wouldn't have been as funny. But the ideas are still quite amusing: of a smallish invasion force being politely but firmly ejected from an Essex house, because they interrupted teatime.

Plotwise, it's not very complex. In fact, compared to his usual tangles of love, blackmail and stolen policemen's helmets, it's simple. But it is amusing, the idea of a bunch of Boy Scouts overthrowing nine different invading forces. Wodehouse's entertaining dialogue is brilliantly absurd. ("An hour ago your camp was silently surrounded by patrols of Boy Scouts, armed with catapults and hockey-sticks").

"The Swoop! Or How Clarence Saved England" is a fun little novel by a master humorist, who was just starting to find his niche when he wrote it. It's not the best that P.G. Wodehouse wrote, but it's still amusing.

                                      Book Description

In July 1953, nine Philadelphia men were arrested and charged with violating the Smith Act of 1940. At the time, this piece of legislation--which prohibits citizens from advocating the overthrow of the U.S. government by any means--was being used as the basis of Senator Joseph McCarthy's campaign to expose and punish any behavior that could be construed as subversive or dangerous to the government. McCarthy particularly took aim against avowed or suspected communists--and the nine men who were arrested that July were leaders of the Communist Party in Philadelphia. Now, for the first time, one of these men reveals the specific circumstances behind the arrests and details the criminal trial which contributed to the beginning of the end of McCarthyism.

4 out of 5 stars How Free is America?.......2002-10-24

This book is an excellent exposition of how supposedly democratic governments suppress civil liberties. In the 1950s, at the height of McCarthyism, many communists were harshly mistreated by the American government. They were denied the basic rights that the United States constitution guaranteed them.

The book's author, Sherman Labovitz, is a communist. He tells of how he and many others were arrested and tried for advocating communism as an economic system. Even though he wanted to bring about communism only by peaceful means, the government accused him of trying to start a violent revolution.

Labovitz recounts how he was unfairly harrassed by the authorities. He remembers how he was arrested and initially denied the right to obtain counsel. He recreates the biased and unjust trial that he was given. One can understand the reaction of the authorities, since in the 1950s, anti-communist hysteria was the tenor of the times. Nevertheless, it is unsettling to see how easily civil liberties were rolled back.

If you are a believer in the importance of America's cherished freedoms, then read this book. You don't have to be a communist to agree that McCarthyism was a subversion of the consitution. There are those who would place restraints on our civil liberties. We can't afford to naively believe that our government will continue to uphold and protect our freedoms. This, then, is the most important lesson of this book: a democracy requires vigilant defenders, even in free countries like America.

Finally, this book is instructive as an analog to contemporary American society. With the war on terrorism underway, we must pay close attention to any attempt by the government to curtail basic civil liberties.

Richard "Dick" Downing (1915-1975) was an influential and intriguing figure in Australian public life. This biography examines his rich and complex contributions to public debate in Australia. Downing's interests ranged widely, from economics to the arts and education, and their expression reveals much about Australian politics and society. Included are many revealing insights into the discussion and formation of public policy during the post war decades and into a particular style of Australian liberalism.

This terrifying memoir recounts author Daphne Scholinski's three years spent in mental institutions for, among other things, Gender Identity Disorder. Daphne came from a busted home: Mom left to go to college and become a feminist and an artist; Dad stayed home with two daughters, the elder of whom, Daphne, he often beat. When Daphne started acting up at school, her shrinks decided to put her away. Her family, not knowing how to handle her, agreed. Because she was a tomboy who wore jeans and T-shirts and didn't act enough like a girl, her treatment, in addition to talk therapy, isolation, and drugs, required her to wear makeup, walk with a swing in her hips, and pretend to be obsessed with boys. This sounds awful enough, but when you realize that the confinement and treatment took place from 1981 to 1984, it's absolutely chilling. This book is both a powerful indictment of Gender Identity Disorder treatment and an inspiring testament of one person's survival.

                                          Book Description

At fifteen years old, Daphne Scholinski was committed to a mental institution and awarded the dubious diagnosis of "Gender Identity Disorder." She spent three years--and over a million dollars of insurance--"treating" the problem...with makeup lessons and instructions in how to walk like a girl. Daphne's story--which is, sadly, not that unusual--has already received attention from such shows as "20/20," "Dateline," "Today," and "Leeza." But her memoir, bound to become a classic, tells the story in a funny, ironic, unforgettable voice that "isn't all grim; Scholinski tells her story in beautifully evocative prose and mines her experiences for every last drop of ironic humor, determined to have the last laugh." 3 out of 5 stars Worth the read.......2006-05-08

I enjoyed this book. I only give it three stars because it did get a bit redundant towards the end, thus boring me a bit, but it's an excellent read for anyone who has suffered through the trials of being trapped in mental health "treatment."

I also felt that somewhere along the course of the book, the author lost her passion for telling the story. The descriptions became vague, there wasn't as much life breathed into the storytelling.

HOWEVER, Daphne has all of my respect. She seems to have come out of this ordeal intact. She is accepting of who she is and doesn't seem to hold hatred or ill will for those who have harmed her. I never felt heat from her words-- she simply told it how it was. I salute her.

it disturbs me when people read memoirs, especially those geared at or focused in psychology, and take it upon themselves to diagnose the writer. that is not dylan's(daphne's) intent (dylan is fTm and is currently living in washington dc). this is a memoir, most importantly...a first-hand creatively written perspective and critique.

having met and visited with dylan at his studio in washington dc, i know that the reality of a tormented past is ever-present. his art reflects this. not only does dylan wrestle with demons of his past, he still must fight against the close-minded bigotry that some people have portrayed in these reviews. my understanding of psychology has always been that of a people-science...a science committed to helping people live good lives. it is not a science of manipulation and judgments, such as the reality that dylan had to face.

my only hope is that you read this book and realize that it is neither fact nor fiction, but one person's perspective on his reality. we cannot fault him for that...only applaud him for sharing his voice.

Scholinski attempts to attack the mental health field in her memoir "The Last Time I Wore a Dress." She asserts that she was held through her teenage years because she was not feminine enough in the eyes of idiot doctors. However, I found little evidence of her tomboy nature contributing to her hospitalization. Scholinski never considers the consequences of her actions, she is dishonest, histrionic, and self-absorbed. It is a lack of maturity, not femininity that causes Scholinski's downfall. Amazingly, Scholinski never sees her actions as having anything to do with the state of her existence. This short, simple, and repetitive novel is a memoir of denial.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Transcending A Living Nightmare.......2004-10-13

Having come from an abusive home, I can relate to what Daphne/Dylan must have felt and how he behaved while trying to cope with his Gender-Identity and the far-from-sympathetic world around him in the 1980's. I came out as gay in 1970 and then as Transgendered in 1993, after having wrestled with "my self-knowledge - vs - what other people tried to make me act like" for MANY years prior -- it was a rocky hellish road at times, but (despite the abuse!) my parents accepted me (grudgingly at times) for who/what I was. I have nothing but kind words for those Tansgendered friends of mine, who like Dylan, persevered through their own private torment, and who accepted me for who I was and for how I identified myself.

I applaud Dylan for having the inner strength to keep going - keep going, no matter the present torment, no matter how horrible the present situation is - keep going forward with your own goal in mind, no matter how clear-cut or nebulous it is. This book has and will inspire others out there who "think they are the only ones" going through this.

We may have come far but in too many parts of this country, children and young adults -- who are trying to reconcile their birth gender with their personal gender identity -- are still being put thru a living nightmare; parents abusing, insulting dismissing them from their households, with no nurturance, no desire to understand their own offspring; even their classmates, teachers, strangers, even friends turning against them. It takes HUGE inner strength to rise above all that and to keep going, keep going forward.

This book will shock, inspire and galvanize. I hope it also EDUCATES those who harbor any prejudices against transgendered individuals, ESPECIALLY those who treat patients with Gender Identity "Disorder".. Since the beginning of time, the spectrum of Masculine and Feminine has run through ALL genders in varying degrees, and not necessarily always corresponding to the individual's birth gender.

In today's civilized and educated society, it is abut time that young people like Dylan are raised with compassion and understanding instead of with psychodramatic brutality. It is my hope that this book also reaches out to those in Child Protective Services as well as those professionals in the fields of Therapy.

4 out of 5 stars Although times have changed, still relevant.......2003-02-13

After having read the spotlight reviews of this book, it appears to be necessary to say something in defense of the mental health profession, of which I am not a member.

The fact is, the mental health community and society as a whole have come a long way since 1983 in regards to this area. More than any other segment of the population, I am sure, the social work and psychotherapeutic communities have an informed understanding and humane sympathy for those with transgender issues. In 1983 it was Daphne who was the monster; today, in the eyes of educated people everywhere, it was her treatment that was the monster.

Which is not to say that her book isn't still relevant. There is certainly a vast, vast way to go. Today, an adolescent would at least be able to consider coming forth with their transgender issues; in the 60s and 70s it was unthinkable.

But adolescence is still too late. Humane treatment of those who would have deviation from gender norms would begin at the very earliest time of life. All little girls of preschool age should have the opportunity to be introduced to the kinds of play more typical of boys, and all little boys should have one dress among their available clothes, which they should be presented without prejudice as an option for make-believe or play.

The vast majority of little children of both sexes will prefer the conventional roles. If one child does not, then the parents have somewhat of a problem on their hands. But it is a problem with available choices for action, and a far better option than raising a tormented and poorly-adjusted adult.
