Book Description
This series arose out of the belief that the international accounting literature should devote more attention to the study of the accounting problems and issues of emerging economies (developing and newly industrialized countries). The volumes presented aim to raise the level of interest in the specific problems of accounting in emerging economies and the awareness of real issues, so that accounting in these countries will not just be seen as a matter of copying what is done in the industrialized countries. Through an increasing awareness of the real issues and the accounting practices advocated in it, these works have become relevant to the actual needs of its readers, and is making real contributions to the accounting development process of emerging economies.

Blur The Distinction Between Work And Play !!.......2005-08-09
A good light read on personality typing within the work world.
Once you figure out what type you are, you can figure out where you are welcome. The book has testing and is a composite read on basic personality theory.
Amazing..Great Book.......2002-04-18
This is the one to read. I even gave it to my husband to read. Easy to read. I read it in 2 hours. This book gave me the reasons people act the way they do. Then it gave me a way to talk to those kinds of people.
Compact, informative and value-for-money.......2001-07-12
I initially bought this book for my husband, who was having a difficult time at work with his boss. My husband has huge praises for the book and now that I have finished reading it, I've come to understand why. Arthur and Dayle have managed to consolidate and present strategies on how to deal with difficult people in a handy and easy-to-read book. Even if you don't find time to read, you can easily read some pages on the way to work in the train. A questionaire helps you to identify what type of person you are, and explains the different personality types, helping you to see why yome people react in certain ways. You will realise eventually why you seem to always clash with a certain personality group. This book gives you tips on how you can handle 'difficult' people and helps you to have a clearer picture of yourself. For all you know you may be the S.O.P. (Source Of Pain) that others are experiencing!!

Book Description
Erwin Schrödinger’s What is Life? published 60 years ago, influenced much of the development of molecular biology. In this new book Christian De Duve, Nobel Laureate and pioneer of modern cell biology, presents a contemporary response to this classic, providing a sophisticated consideration of the key steps or bottlenecks that constrain the origins and evolution of life. De Duve surveys the entire history of life, including insights into the conditions that may have led to its emergence. He uses as landmarks the many remarkable singularities along the way, such as the single ancestry of all living beings, the universal genetic code, and the monophyletic origin of eukaryotes. The book offers a brief guided tour of biochemistry and phylogeny, from the basic molecular building blocks to the origin of humans. Each successive singularity is introduced in a sequence paralleling the hypothetical development of features and conditions on the primitive earth, explaining how and why each transition to greater complexity occurred.
Customer Reviews:
Never fear, it's not a "Creationist/ID" text.......2006-12-30
This is an excellent, challenging book. Please do not be put off by the suggestion of one reviewer that it is somehow sympathetic to the nonsensical "intelligent design" and "creation 'science'" religions. It is nothing of the sort. This is a good science book for the secular-minded. See the good review in Nature, August 2006.
Unprecedented clarity on the origin of life.......2006-11-06
The purpose of this excellent book is to highlight singularities in the origin of life (p.viii), and evaluate available evidence against the possible causes of chance, deterministic chemistry in a suitable environment, and intelligent design. It requires undergraduate level biochemistry to read it, but I have never come across another book on the subject that gives such precision and clarity to the main issues.
It is not spelt out, so readers need to be aware that a singularity is a unique event that only happened once and is thus indistinguishable from a miracle (because science can only experimentally verify repeatable phenomena). Because `The history of life is marked by a large number of such singularities' (p.viii) then the default explanation must be intelligent design because he provides no other non-natural cause in his list of seven causes in the `General Introduction'. If any natural cause was available then these problems would not be singularities.
The natural causes that he appeals to are unconvincing and/or logically invalid--that is why the problems remain singularities. For example, he attributes nothing to chance and everything to chemistry and the environment (p.238). However he has to invoke all the properties of life to get the chemistry out of the 'dirty gemisch' of the natural environment and into an organized and functional form, so by using life to explain life his argument is circular and invalid--that is why the problems remain singularities.
In regard to the environment, he avoids being specific in most cases, so the only environmental causes we end up with are many references to the chaotic dirty gemisch, and the `starvation, acidification and excessive heat' (p.167) that finally got pre-life over the line to life. Dirty chemistry, starvation, acidification and excessive heat are easily reproduced in the laboratory and none of them produce life!
As a creationist, I can say that de Duve's excellent book will be on my recommended reading list for many years to come. No one else has ever been so clear in describing (i) the singularities underpinning life, (ii) the total poverty of naturalistic explanations, and (iii) such willful disregard for the logical explanation of the evidence.

Customer Reviews:
Where does it say that this is supposed to be for younger readers?.......2007-04-11
I've scanned the entire page for this book here at Amazon.com and looked on the inside cover of the book itself when I borrowed it from the library to read. Nowhere can I find an indication that this book is directed at young readers. Therefore I must take issue with other user reviews for this book that criticize it for being inappropriate for teens. It wasn't INTENDED for teens; should it be so surprising that it contains material that some people would consider in appropriate for them?
Yes, the book contains references to the procreative activities of the mythological figure Rig. Yes, it discusses the sacrifice of a young slave girl during a chieftain's funeral (although, as the original account by Ibn Fadhlan states, the girl was not as "unwilling" as another review would indicate: she did, in fact, volunteer for the task and was treated with "great courtesy" before the ceremony).
It discusses these things because they were part of the culture of the so-called Vikings. It discusses them because they are what this book is ABOUT. Should we intentionally omit pertinent information regarding aspects of the culture of the Northmen just because it may offend our modern-day, Christianity-based sensibilities? That seems a narrow-minded, ethnocentric and thoroughly unscientific way of doing things to me.
I can also understand one being "disturbed" by (but not "with") the material in this book, especially if one is not familiar with Viking culture, but to then claim that the material is "opinionated" (or even "opionated") is quite silly. I don't know what basis one would have for making such a claim, since most if not all of the material I encountered in this book I've encountered in other, very well respected books on the subject, not to mention in the existing primary sources.
The book itself is just what it presents itself to be: a relatively short, fairly well written, straightforward overview of both Viking history and Viking society; not too stuffy, scholarly or long-winded; and engaging for the layperson with little knowledge of the subject. I would heartily recommend it to anyone--and that includes teens.
DEFINITELY NOT FOR THE KIDS!.......2002-11-25
I own ten WLWL books and most are entertaining, but I found this one to be somewhat bizarre. As with all books in this series you will enjoy beautiful color imagery. There are numerous examples of Viking artifacts - household objects, swords, clothing, longships, intricate wood carvings and the like. The text focuses on daily lives, settlements, and Viking ingenuity. Particular attention is paid to their vicious, warlike nature and the various mythological gods and pagan rituals surrounding them. Here I was struck by some overt and completely gratuitous sexual references. A few examples:"(The god) Rig was greeted by a man in his prime called Father, who was...beside an elegant woman called Mother, who sat admiring her...As was his custom, Rig stayed three nights and slept between the couple in their bed. Nine months later Mother gave birth to a boy..." This scenario is repeated several times; on page 28 Rig impregnates a great-grandmother! All of this comes from myth preserved in the Icelandic poem Rigsthula, but with the vast wealth of Viking lore to choose from, why would the author select this information? Pages 74-76 detail the cremation of a Rus chieftain and an unwilling slave girl. "The slave girl drank herself into a stupor...before being put to death she visited the tents of several men close to the chieftain and had intercourse with them...at the last moment the victim appeared to waver...Two men held her feet and two grasped her hands, while the Angel of Death looped a cord around her neck and gave the crossed ends to the other two men for them to pull. Then the old woman seized a broad-bladed dagger and plunged it repeatedly between the victim's ribs, and the men tightened the cord until she was dead..." Time-Life has long been a trusted source for young readers. Unfortunately, explicit references (without a hint on the dust jacket or table of contents) make this book a poor choice for them and a potential embarrassment as a gift. In addition, though the photos and drawings are great, the text sometimes gets a little boring even for adults. Recommended only for mature readers with a very strong interest in this subject.
Bad.......2002-03-18
Hello,
I am very disturbed with this book. I am a mother of two and have written three books. I am disgusted by the information. It is all opionated. I do not recommend that you read this book. Thank you
The best book in the series other than Egypt.......1999-11-11
When I read this book I became obsessed with vikings, everyone who likes mideaval history HAS to read this book.
Book Description
Viking longships evolved from one-man canoes of the Scandinavian Stone Age, through wood-built-ships of c. 200 BC into the recognisable longboats of the 4th century AD. From this point, the Viking Longship developed into the pre-eminent raider and trader in the North Sea and Baltic, venturing as far afield as the Mediterranean, North Atlantic and modern-day Russia. Keith Durham uses reconstructions, original sources, translations and archaeological evidence to render a vivid picture of the vessels that dominated the seaways of Scandinavia, founded colonies on Iceland, Greenland and the New World and terrorised the coastlines of northern Europe. Also covered are Norman vessels, including the invasion fleet of William the Conqueror.
Customer Reviews:
Everything you need to know the construction of Viking ships.......2007-08-22
This is a great little book about the details of how Viking ships were constructed. It goes through the history of the development of Viking longships and describes (in great detail) how they were constructed. Thankfully, there is a glossary in the back for us landlubbers. Mr. Durham does a great job of conveying how magnificant these vessels were. The craftsmanship and lore that went into building these longships was, quite simply, amazing. There are numerous detailed drawings and the paintings are quite good (something you can't say for all the books in this series). After reading how these boats were constructed, it is easy to understand how the Vikings were able to be the force that they were. The best indication of this is the Peacock that was discovered in the ship-burial from 1000 AD. Imagine what that Peacock went through to end up in Norway! This book is strictly about how Viking longships were built and does get a bit technical. It is worth reading if you are curious about Vikings and their seafaring ways!
Book Description
Young readers learn all about the Viking way of life as they sail with Uggla, Grim, and their grizzly crew. These exciting, authentic characters work, play, and battle, letting readers follow and identify them while exploring a famous culture. The book features vibrant tableaux, facts, and legends, with stories about the Norse gods, images of the Viking craftsmen at work, a raid on a church, and the funeral of a mighty warrior. There's even flies, beer stains, and bloody fingerprints plastering the pages, making Viking Longship a fun way for youngsters to learn about history.
