A huge disappointment.......2004-02-02

There are not many books on investing in the energy sector presumably because of the boring reputation of that sector (and commodities investing in general). However, that perception is simply wrong. Energy is the lifeblood of our modern societies and its future cheap and abundant avaiability is becoming more and more uncertain. Any serious book on this important subject is therefore highly welcome. Unfortunately, the book under review is not serious. To begin with, the most important issue facing the oil and natural gas industry, the issue of depletion is not mentionend in the book at all. The fact that the US oil production reached its (so called Hubbert-) peak of oil extraction in 1970 with falling production ever since then is not mentioned either. The world is facing a peak of oil production in the immediate future (this decade) with possibly dramatic consequences for the economy in general and the energy sector in particular. All of this is not addressed in the book at all.

The author is unfortunately politically biased. For instance when discussing the Russian oil reserves (among the largest in the world), not a single Russian oil company is mentioned. This is unexcusable especially since the oil reserves of the largest Russian oil companies rival those of Mobil-Exxon (a market leader which is extensively discussed in the book). Yet the Russian oil companies are valued by the stock market at a fraction of the valuation enjoyed by the the market leaders. Failing to emphasize this important point indicates that the author is not a experienced investor. He may be a enthusiastic politician, but definitely not a great investor. There are many other irritating inaccuracies and omissions. For instance, the appendix A listing the world oil reserves mentions the marginal reserves of Suriname, but fails to list the substantial reserves of Venezuela - the largest known oil reserves in North and South America. To sum up, I regret having bought this book.

Bad writing, even weaker logic and investing advice........2003-07-08

Having spent 13 years on Wall Street focusing on other industries, I was most excited to find what appeared to be an interesting book on energy investing. However, my enthusiasm faded very quickly. The book is a ham-handed effort to teach about the energy business and investing, in my opinion. Weak writing at best, even worse intellectual logic, Mr. Duarte cannot seem to follow a single line of thought for more than a few sentences. Further, the book suffers terribly from his attempts to be much more certain about events and connections between events than one can possibly be. A must avoid, in my view.

Excellent!.......2003-02-24

This book was absolutely fantastic. Well written, and easy to understand, it brings the reader completely through the energy sector, giving you a solid "investors" understanding of types of energy companies, as well as when to invest in them. It really helps you understand the parts behind the energy sector, and what moves the market. I highly recommend both this book and Joe Duarte's other book: Successful Biotech Investing.

Very valuable book but charts need improvement.......2002-12-11

I found the book filled with valuable information about investing in general and energy sector invesing in particular. However, I did find the charts to be frustrating. Not enough data is provided on them to fully understand them and they are not up to the quality of the text.
However, I do recommend the book.

Energy sector.......2002-09-23

Precise and easy to understand. Covers some history on Standard Oil's break-up, then comback as a portfolio of different companies. Mentions some great plays on the coming oil boom. Very smart by never predicting outcomes or making outlandish forcast.Well written, a great entry book for a novice to the energy patch.

Easy to follow but not quite complete.......2005-10-13

I used Knowdell's book to write a paper- applying the implementation steps to an actual case study. It is well written and easy to follow, however, given that career development is a hard sell to management, implementation needs to include evaluation of the program as well. Without showing the benefits of the program to management, career development within an organization will be seen as nothing more than a generous perk. Many organizations pay for employees undergraduate and/or graduate education - and that often is a generous perk. But organizations do see that while the employee is still there in the organization, the training and knowledge gained from the education is benefitting the organization. The same needs to be said about career development. Knowdell does not provide a lot of how this can help organizations, other than perhaps as a motivation tool for employees. If you need that info, you'll need to do extra work to look at what research says in that area. Overall, career development and tuition reimbursements do attract the best candidates to an organization, are developed within the organization, and are retained because they feel valued by the organization.

Here is an excellent book for HR staff who needs to be updated on career development programs and counseling. It gives a practic and simple check list to go thru this, somethimes, complicated process. 5 well deserved stars to the author.

I bought this book because I wanted an off-the-shelf framework to put punch into staff development. The book met my needs.

Be aware that the approach includes an approach for assisting individuals in assessing their "motivated skills" and "values". I think that's important but others may find this too broad.

Since 1958 state courts of last resort in the United States have handed down a notably larger number of overruling decisions than ever before. This distinctive record raises many questions about how and by whom law reform should be effected. Mr. Keeton examines this issue in relation to private law the branch of law concerned with the rights and duties of private individuals toward each other, enforceable through civil proceedings.

In the first part of this book, the author reviews methods of law reform. He focuses on the role of the courts and legislatures as agencies of abrupt change; the remarkable rate at which the role of the courts has grown; and the means by which courts may discharge their increased responsibility for changing private law to meet contemporary needs. He strongly urges a more active and imaginative participation in law reform by both courts and legislatures, and proposes concrete methods for achieving it.

In the second part of this book, Mr. Keeton concentrates on reform in two important areas of private law: harms caused by defective products and by traffic accidents. He considers the developing rules for strict liability, and discusses the issues of principle underlying the basic protection plan for traffic victims--a proposal, of which he is co-author, which is under consideration in a number of state legislatures.

The closing chapter treats problems stemming from the necessity of blending the old with the new when private law reform is undertaken. This discussion stresses one of the book's recurring themes: the need to balance stability and predictability of law with flexibility and reform.

The author disposes of some misconceptions about the role of public policy in a workable legal system-misconceptions that sometimes affect the attitudes and thinking not only of professionals in the field of law, but also of those who see the system from the outside.

This book contains controversial ideas that will be of interest to all who are concerned with law reform, whether professionally or as informed citizens.

Excellent book on Austerlitz.......2007-04-30

This is an Excellent book on the Austerlitz campaign, how Napoleon outmanouvered ad destroyed the Russian and Austrian army. I especially like the fact that it has many of the officers names and which units they fought in and little biography. Excellent plates, which are excellent painting guides for the wargamer or military modeller.

Dropped black from color plates.......2004-07-02

I have all the books in this series (four to date) plus a few others by H&C. I have to agree with Christopher. This installment seems to have some printing problems. But in my book, its only two pages (pages 14 and 15) that the black plate didn't print, giving the uniform plates on those pages large areas of a pale bluish gray where the black should have been. This might not seem that major since only two pages are affected, but since the plates are one of the stronger reasons why I collect the books, this is actually a big deal to me. For the price we pay, and the the fact that these books are of very nice quality, you would think that they would proof the printed material looking for mistakes before and during printing. My reason for the 3star rating for this book. The other books get 5stars for color plates.
