Harvard Business Review on Compensation

Book Description
Salary, bonuses, benefits and "perks" may be the most visible elements of a rewards program, but other components are just as valuable to employees. This comprehensive book and CD-ROM package shows how nonfinancial rewards can be quantified and combined with monetary measures in a way that complements business objectives.
The authors' eye-opening research on what employees value is backed up by examples from their own consulting experience. The book's step-by-step process features more than 100 practical tools for developing an "M3" rewards system based on money, mix, and message, and provides a blueprint for creating a custom-tailored rewards strategy to match an organization's specific goals.
Customer Reviews:
Rewarding Read.......2006-12-09
This is an excellent book, especially for HR/C&B practitioners. Like most HR topics, reward strategy is common sense and this book structures it neatly. A fantastic reward strategy framework - shows the inter-related nature of all stratgies and the operationalised details of a compensation strategy.
The book is comprehensive, yet accessible.
Nice to have all the PowerPooint slides on CD in the back cover, too.
A textbook on employee rewards.......2003-11-03
If you enjoy working with university textbooks, you'll appreciate this book. It feels like a college text. It looks like a college text. It's filled with graphs and charts like a college text. It's seasoned with case studies in call out boxes. There are endnotes, as well as a bibliography. The index is so full of references, a smaller type was used-perhaps to save space.
The authors' message is that the secret to developing a creative and effective rewards strategy is based on a combination of Money, Mix, and Message. The Money aspect addresses the value of the reward(s) to the employee. The design of the plan, constructed to meet employer and employee needs, is the Mix. The Message deals with what the employer wants to communicate to its employees about appropriate values and the company's expectations. The authors describe their approach as "M3," emphasizing the need for a good balance between the three factors.
Readers will explore more than a hundred practical tools for building what they call the M3 Reward System. Financial rewards are integrated with non-financial rewards. Application of the step-by-step strategy promoted by the authors is a CD-ROM that is loaded with tools, exercises, and techniques to equip readers to tailor their own strategies to be consistent with company needs.
The authors are consultants with considerable experience in serving dozens of Fortune 500 companies. The orientation of the book, understandably, is toward larger companies. Smaller firms will still get a lot out of this text, but may have to invest some serious study time to get the full benefit of the package. The stories relating the authors' experiences are illuminating and add value for the reader who wants to gain the deeper understanding of how customized corporate reward programs are put together and managed.
Hefty price, but fully loaded.
Great Resource!.......2002-12-17
This book is an excellent resource for HR professionals, compensation specialists, and line managers alike.
Well written, with great models and thought processes, yet pragmatic in its approach, this book provides a great fresh look at how to motivate employees to achieve business results.
A great tool and and resource!.......2002-12-12
This book is an absolute must-purchase!...
Compensation and HR professionals in general can derive great insight and value from this work. I recommend it strongly as a cornerstone of every business person's professional library.
Superb!..........2002-12-08
An absolutely wonderful source of information for compensation professionals, HR professionals, and managers of all functions.
This book is a very hands-on, pragmatic handbook for building the rewards systems and structures, which will allow an organization to win the war for talent. I recommend it highly!...

Book Description
Reparations is an idea whose time has come. From civilian victims of war in Iraq and South America to descendents of slaves in the US to citizens of colonized nations in Africa and south Asia to indigenous peoples around the world - these groups and their advocates are increasingly arguing for the importance of addressing historical injustices that have long been either ignored or denied. This volume aims to contribute to these debates by focusing the attention of a group of highly distinguished international experts on the ways that reparations claims figure in contemporary political and social justice movements. Four broad types of reparations claims are examined, those involving indigenous peoples, the legacy of slavery in the United States, victims of war and conflict, and colonialism. In each instance, scholars and activists argue about the character of the injustice for which reparations are owed, why it is important to take these demands seriously, and what form redress should take. The aim is not consensus but to exhibit better the complexity of the issues involved - a goal which the interdisciplinary nature of the volume furthers - as well as the importance of taking seriously both conceptual issues and the actual politics of reparations.

Book Description
Running through the history of jurisprudence and legal theory is a recurring concern about the connections between law and justice and about the ways law is implicated in injustice. In earlier times law and justice were viewed as virtually synonymous. Experience, however, has taught us that, in fact, injustice may be supported by law. Nonetheless, the belief remains that justice is the special concern of law.
Commentators from Plato to Derrida have called law to account in the name of justice, asked that law provide a language of justice, and demanded that it promote the attainment of justice. The justice that is usually spoken about in these commentaries is elusive, if not illusory, and disconnected from the embodied practice of law.
Furthermore, the very meaning of justice, especially as it relates to law, is in dispute. Justice may refer to distributional issues or it may involve primarily procedural questions, impartiality in judgment or punishment and recompense.
The essays collected in Justice and Injustice in Law and Legal Theory seek to remedy this uncertainty about the meaning of justice and its disembodied quality, by embedding inquiry about justice in an examination of law's daily practices, its institutional arrangements, and its engagement with particular issues at particular moments in time. The essays examine the relationship between law and justice and injustice in specific issues and practices and, in doing so, make the question of justice come alive as a concrete political question. They draw on the disciplines of history, law, anthropology, and political science.
Contributors to this volume include Nancy Coot, Joshua Coven, Robert Gorton, Frank Michelin, and Michael Tossing.
Austin Sarat is William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Science, Amherst College. Thomas R. Kearns is William H. Hastie Professor of Philosophy, Amherst College.

Book Description
A wide-ranging exploration of our universe -- from "what makes the wind blow?" to "how was the moon formed?" -- in questions-and-answer format, written in vintage Asimov style. "A fine introduction to modern astronomical theory." -- LIBRARY JOURNAL
Customer Reviews:
Great Read (as usual) -- but a bit simplistic.......2005-03-22
Asimov's writing is in tip top form -- clear, straightforward, and with his sense of wit that is always present.
However, some of the questions are pretty elementary for most of his fans -- e.g., why does the moon go through phases, what is the future of our sun, what are tides...
Important questions, to be sure, but, not as engaging on his writings concerning the beginning of the universe, the atom, or measurements.
Nice Reference Book or for Kids, But..........2004-01-18
This is hardly the best Asimov non-fiction out there. For the adult reader, I'd recommend any collection of his SF&F articles. I have this book and I've read most of it (this is coming from someone who's read at least 70 or 80 Asimov books), but I wouldn't strongly recommend it. If you're really interested, try your local library or used bookstore. Save your money for some of Asimov's better works.
3 generations of the Andersons agreed this is GREAT!.......2003-07-02
I first read this book at about age 35. Then lent it to my 66-year-old father. Just as was I unable, so, too, was he unable to put it down for more than a meditative moment to complicate Asimov's musings.
After Dad read it I loaned it to my older son, then aged 12. He had the same addiction as Dad and I.
The three of us are not prone to dwell on science, history, or anything of great consequence often, but we still frequently discuss topics first brought to our attention by probably the greatest, and certainly one of the most prolific and diverse writers in history.
I challenge any reader to not contemplate many of the thoughts expressed by Asimov in this fascinating and intriguing book.
Asimov and Hawking were probably the two most intelligent science writers of the 20th Century. Asimov alone, however, also was a skilled writer of history and fiction.
Required reading........1999-08-24
This is the quick reference handbook for our universe, written in simple and concise language (only 252 pages). It should be required reading in high school. Everyone should possess this knowledge. Read this book and see the big picture.
Brilliant.......1999-05-18
If you've ever looked up in wonder at the stars in the night sky, or puzzled over the origins of the Earth, this is the book for you. A fabulous journey through centuries of scientific curiosity and discovery that left me wishing for more!

Book Description
This is not a history of chemistry which uses stamps instead of the usual illustrations, but a collection of short essays and comments on such chemistry as can be found on postage stamps and other philatelic items. In other words, the choice of topics is dictated by the philatelic material available, with the necessary consequence that important parts of chemical history will be missing for the simple reason that they have not found their way onto postage stamps. Thus, the reader may find detailed comments on lesser known chemists, such as Wilhelm August Lampadius who has been honoured with two stamps by the German Post Office, but hardly anything on such luminaries as Robert Bunsen, who have not been deemed worthy of a commemorative issue.

Book Description
Our Mothers' War is an eye-opening and moving portrait of women during World War II, a war that forever transformed the way women participate in American society. Never before has the vast range of women's experiences during this pivotal era been brought together in one book. Now, Our Mothers' War re-creates what American women from all walks of life were doing and thinking, on the home front and abroad. These heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking accounts of the women we have known as mothers, aunts, and grandmothers reveal facets of their lives that have usually remained unmentioned and unappreciated.
Our Mothers' War gives center stage to one of WWII's most essential fighting forces: the women of America, whose extraordinary bravery, strength, and humanity shine through on every page.

See Women of the Homefront by Pauline E. Parker for first hand accounts of life on the homefront during WWII.
Fast, Entertaining Read.......2007-02-15
This book was a response to the popular Our Father's War, and I think it does a good job capturing the woman's perspective during the war. It is filled with popular history sources and first hand accounts which really gives the reader a clear understanding and a vivid picture of what a woman's life was like during the war. The book isn't too heavy on traditional historical evidence or prose but that is one of the reasons why it reads so fast. It's a great book to set the tone and instill ideas to be further researched by those interested in more detail. Overall, I highly recommend the book to anyone. It was very entertaining.
Excellent Resource.......2006-11-05
The voice of women veterans is one too seldom heard. Now, with WWII veterans dying at a rate of over 1,000 per day, those voices will all too soon become silent. WWII was the first time women joined the military, and they encountered prejudice and hardships every step of the way. The women and nurses who served in the military witnessed horrors that many of the men encountered, but with much less preparation and little resource for healing after the war. All but forgotten for the roles they performed, this book brings to light their stories by both the women themselves, as well as the author's research and study. Much of the information is rarely found in available books, and "Our Mothers War" is an excellent resource for that information- particularly on the lesser known women's roles on the homefront, in espionage, and those who were taken as prisoners of war. Women volunteered to help the war effort in every possible way. The accounts tell stories of war as well as stories of the lighter side of day-to-day living that was the human side of life during WWII.
An excellent overall account of women in the 1940's, and one that will likely encourage the reader to delve deeper into our nation's history of female veterans, women's roles and the women's movement.
Great personal in-depth look.......2005-03-27
This isn't meant to be some exhaustive encyclopedia, but it's nevertheless a very solid thorough detailed account of what the women of the WWII generation went through, in many facets and fields. Besides just writing about the women in the military, in the factories, on the general homefront, and in the Japanese-American internment camps, there is also interesting insightful information on areas little covered, such as the women who worked at or who had husbands working at Los Alamos, prostitutes, women in right-wing pro-Fascist groups agitating against the American government, and spies. It's stunning to read about all the women of my grandmothers' generation had to struggle against to be accepted into the military, in factories, as professionals, in any capacity in fact besides that of wife, mother, sister, and girlfriend. Particularly horrifying was the section on the Victory Girls; the sexual double standard sent women (many of them proven innocent) suspected of passing VD to soldiers to jail, while giving these soldiers no punishment for cavorting with prostitutes and giving them the best care instead of forcing them to languish in dank unhygienic jail cells without medical attention. Blame the women and treat the men as innocent victims. Also shocking in modern times is how women believed to be lesbians in the military were treated, like they had a mental disorder and were deranged unnatural deviants, as well as how many women who had loyally punctually worked in the factories were handed their discharge slips on the day the boys came home. Still, even restrained by the double standard and beliefs of the era, these women had tasted freedom and greater possibilities, and thanks to everything they did, their knowledge of greater possibilities, they raised daughters who would help to bring about the womens' liberation movement in the next generation, knowing they could never go back to the limited world and possibilities that had existed prior to WWII.
from homemakers to movie stars...........2005-01-24
Very informative book on the roles that American women took on during WWII. It showed the beginning of women becoming more empowered by having to work outside of the home. This book should be required reading in all U.S. History classes.

Book Description
From its humble birth as a few thatched huts along the shoreline, Havana has emerged from five hundred years of turbulent history as the most fascinating city in the Caribbean. Spain's "Pearl of the Antilles" was in turn plundered by pirates, invaded by foreign fleets and then turned into a Mafia-run playground under U.S. tutelage. Since 1959 the seat of Fidel Castro's revolutionary regime, Havana is now shaking off forty years of blockade to face the new challenges of mass tourism. A city whose fabric has always been threatened by hurricanes and political upheaval, Havana has developed a wild edge, an energy and an alluring exoticism that have intrigued and enchanted visitors as diverse as Alexander von Humboldt, Anaïs Nin, Lorca, and Sartre.
Claudia Lightfoot explores Havana's history and its paradoxes: a city where architectural treasures survive among crumbling tenements; where a vibrant street life takes place amid shortages; where revolutionary politics, machismo, and a thriving black market co-exist against a background of salsa, gritería, and baseball.
The city of architecture: fortresses, mansions, and Art Deco exuberance; baroque facades and balconies; an eclectic cityscape.
The city of politics and exile: the colonial and neo-colonial years; wars, dictators, and revolution; José Martí and Che Guevara; the diaspora and the dream of Miami.
The city of literature, art, and music: Carpentier, Lezama Lima, and Cabrera Infante; passion and irony; Graham Greene and Hemingway; Wilfredo Lam and Nelson Dominguez; Afro-Cuban roots; salsa, rumba, son, and rap."

A real insight.......2004-08-15
I knew Claudia slightly when I was resident in Cuba as a journalist from 1993-2000. Her book is well researched and wriiten from the viewpoint of an unbiased and perceptive member of the foreign community of Havana. A must for all Cuba watchers and those considering visiting the most fascinating island in the Americas.

Adolescent Therapy That Really Works: Helping Kids Who Never Asked for Help in the First Place (Norton Professional Books)

Book Description
With bold Southern humor, journalist and performer Kirk Read takes readers on a guided tour of his precocious and courageous adolescence. Recalling his years as an openly gay high school student, Read describes how he navigated the hallways with his sense of humor and dignity intact. He fondly recalls his initiations into sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, as well as his "shy as neon" acts of rabble rousing during high school. How I Learned to Snap is a refreshingly victim-free story in which queer teenagers are creative, resilient, and ultimately heroic.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Book, and Very True to Life!.......2007-07-18
This is one of the best books I've read in quite a while. I have given it as a gift to several of my gay friends. Each of them (who grew up here) found Kirk's account to be "right on target".
I am amazed by the negative reviews and rude comments about Kirk Read.
Sometimes it is refreshing to read something written simply for the purpose of entertainment-we don't need big words to get the point. Kirk used simple language that ANYONE can understand and he used the actual sayings kids around here used at the time.
I have known Kirk most of my life. I can assure all readers that he is not arrogant and is not a brat-even if it seems that way. He was always one of the friendliest kids in the school-and was considered to be quite cool-, and the majority of people seemed to genuinely like him despite his openness about being gay.
Please consider this when reading the book. It is simply an entertaining story to allow others to relate to the experiences he had.
This book is worth your time and you won't be able to put it down.
Good but could be better........2006-06-07
The book is good and it keeps your attention, but you are left with the thought of "what was the point"? The book does not go in depth at all. And he only touches on his eating disorder which would have made an amazing chapter. He did not go through anything in high school that anybody, straight or gay, did not experience. There was not point to this book. It was funny and quick witted but he got on my nerves right from the beginning. He does not tie in the Snap to the whole story. You are left to figure that out on your own. I do not recommend this book.
Snap, Crackle, Pop.......2006-05-25
Man oh Man (or better still, man on man) can this guy write! His last name is Read and that is what he makes us do. You all know by now that this is a coming of age, coming out story set in the South in the eighties. What differentiates it is how adorable the author and star character comes across. His swish side is offset by his tough soccer playing and ability to beat up the homophobic bullies. Above all else is his terrific sense of humor. Then there's the writing. Describing a particularly intense right-wing, holy-roller Christian recruiting experience: "If God had to go to such lengths to invite people to his birthday party, He probably wasn't serving very good cake." (Interesting that the "H" is capitalized.) On his "emotional girlfriend's" driving habits: "...we were a pair of crash test dummies waiting for our brick wall to arrive." There are plenty of other examples. Unfortunately, the author's website (kirkread.com) is not nearly as well put together as the book (only two non-descript photos of Mr. Read) but it does indicate that a second book is in the works. Bring it on!
When is the movie coming out?.......2006-01-18
What an incredibly open and honest and captivating story! Read is a storyteller to reckon with -- he gives us the coming-of-age story that makes all of those coming-out stories just look silly. This is a story about growing up that doesn't pull any punches or make you grimace because it's cutesy or fake -- bravo, Kirk Read!
One is never too young to develop standards........2005-09-12
That is one of the numerous quotes that I have taken from this book and completely agree with. Kirk Read is not only a talented and interesting gay man with personality and one hell of a sense of humour, he's also witty. He tells his story of growing up in a supposed homophobic neighbourhood in such a way that makes you want to not put the book down until you have finished it. I constantly found myself breathless from laughter and impressed with his cleverness.
It's practically impossible to not like Kirk. Even the people he was surrounded by that were homophobic or had even the slightest aversion to gays liked him. This book is not only about a gay teenager going through life, encountering obstacles and overcoming them, it's also a lesson in acceptance of others and oneself. `How I Learned To Snap' can easily change your perception of certain people and situations. There were many times in the book that Kirk thought that he would have to fight something and he even got extremely excited in some instances only to discover that things were not exactly the way that he had assumed.
So why did I only give this book four stars? I must admit that it did not flow as well as I thought it could have. I usually have this problem when it comes to autobiographies, it has nothing to do with the book itself, it's just my preference coming into play.
I recommend this book to anyone, not just GLBT people. It will teach you a lot about yourself and the world around you.
