In this book, Belkaoui turns his attention to significant problems he sees facing the accounting profession as a whole and examines their effects on the way accounting is practiced, on accountants' clients, and on business in general. The problems derive, Belkaoui explains, from new developments in the accounting environment including the organizational climate in CPA firms and the rising incidence of fraudulent cases. Arguing that these problems, if not resolved, will lead to a crisis of confidence in accounting and increasing government regulation of the profession, Belkaoui both identifies their causes and proposes solutions to avert a crisis in the field. The book is divided into six chapters, each of which addresses a particular problem in contemporary accounting. Belkaoui begins by describing a new conflictual order in the accounting environment and goes on to examine particular conflicts generated by the profession's heavy reliance on credentialism, its role in the fragmentation of services in CPA firms, and its tenuous position in the courts. The following chapters show how the credibility of accounting has been shaken by fraudulent cases and explores ways in which the accounting work process has declined. Finally, Belkaoui explores problems associated with the high levels of job dissatisfaction and turnover in CPA firms and problems in the production of accounting knowledge. Students of accounting as well as practicing professionals will find both a sobering assessment of current accounting practices and an illuminating look at potential solutions.

All the titles from the 'ASTD Trainer's Sourcebook' series are excellent. These are books that provide the trainer with a comprehensive reference on the subject matter, ideas on activities and games, as well as other tools.

For the beginning and advanced trainer alike, this is a wonderful and comprehensive book on teambuilding that can also be easily used by non-training professionals.

Excellent book for the novice facilitator as well as the pro! This comprehensive guide takes you through every phase of team development from start to finish. It presents the data in an easy to follow, step-by-step facilitator style. It includes reproducable handouts and slides. An excellent resource for establishing teams! Baur and Summers had no great motive for inventing a holiday, as they explain succinctly in Chapter Two: "Talking like a pirate is fun. It's really that simple." And to help readers engage in as much fun as possible, they have devised the parameters of Pirattitude, the state of mind needed to squeeze the most juice from the day. The definition and test for Pirattitude waits in Chapter Three. Then, in Chapter Four, you can try your hand at a brief test of pirate trivia to prove if you know the name of Blackbeard's ship (was it Queen Anne's Revenge or Sissybritches?) and if a proper slug of grog contains rum or Sprite as a primary ingredient. Trust me, the test isn't very hard.

OK, now we get to the meat of the book. You wanna talk like a pirate? You gotta know the lingo. And these guys want to help you, although they readily admit their research "involved more beer and pizza than actually looking things up." So get ready to pepper your speech with everything from "avast" to "barnacle," from "lubber" to "wench," from "booty" to "salmagundi." And, once you know the words, these scurvy sea dogs help you still more by describing ways to put your new vocabulary to work at home, school, work, church and pretty much anywhere else you might find yourself. (They even provide the very helpful warning that "most women do not consider the phrase 'Prepare to be boarded!' an adequate substitute for foreplay.")

To fill out the book (because it really is pretty slim, after all) the two rum-soaked bilge rats (see how I cunningly weave these piratical words into my text?) provide the lyrics to a new pirate song, biographical tidbits about some real, honest-to-gosh pirates as well as some who exist only on the silver screen, a personality test to determine your level of pirattitude, an advice column and a peek at Baur and Summers' secret ambition.

That's it. That's all there is to it. Well Blow Me Down! is a funny, silly book by two silly, funny men who had nothing to do so they created a modern phenomenon. So don't forget to celebrate Mark's ex-wife's birthday each year by indulging the wee pirate that's in us all!

The lads have done well with this book. Not only do they bring home vocabulary tips, but also the history and underlying fun in talking like a bloodthirsty buccaneer. A trip through its pages'll have you confounding others in no time...

I laughed at everything in this book! I heard about these guys on the radio last year and had a blast celebrating talk like a pirate day on September 19th. I loved the pirate quizzes and all the fun pirate lingo. This September I look forward to calling my boss "a scurvy bilge rat " and telling him to "dance the hempen jig" and other fine phrases found in, "Well Blow Me Down." I laughed so hard I cried when I read the last chapter where the Pirate Guys dream of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Pure fun!

A very passionate author.......2006-02-09

This book, like the others by the same author, are the most comprehensive books about russian aircraft. It covers history,development, production, deployment and even some comparison with contemporary western fighters. Despite this it is still a very readable book and does not get bogged down with technical jargon and numbers.

The author himself seems to have a real passion for aviation subject and this shows in the book, making it very enjoyable to read. Having said that however, the author does have a very slight bias towards russian aircraft. A VERY SLIGHT one.

Most of the information is in the text, though it has some interesting photos of key components or variants.

Overall, a very good book that has alot of background information yet still easy to read. A feat in itself.

I read this when it first came out so I'm forced to paraphrase Mr. Broder, Pulitzer Prize winning political commentator, in that quote.

This is a fantastic book. A fascinating, unbiased, inside look at how the news is made. An extremely even keeled examination that is riveting from beginning to end. Personally I would strongly suggest it to any high-school government class, college level media class, and an absolute must for anybody that watches the news on TV or reads the paper.

Find out how politicians manipulate the news, about sound bites, false stories, newspaper owners, and just about everything and anything that deals with news and Mr. Broder does it in an entertaining way. Forget everything you know or think you know about how the news is made. David S. Broder calls it how he's seen it, from the front lines and "behind the front page".

Inside view of the news business.......1998-10-04

Too bad this is out-of-print! Mr. Broder is not nearly as dry as he is in his newspaper columns in this book but just as insightful and non-partisan. He offers valuable inside criticism on the news media and also answers some common criticisms that he does not feel valued (like the claims of a "conservative" or "liberal" media). Very informative and well worth reading.
