      Book Description

Increasingly, people working in teams face complex issues that need resolving in an efficient, participatory manner that honors the group's diverse perspectives and individual creativity. The Workshop Book outlines the best practices of the workshop method, based on the Institute for Cultural Affair's Technology of Participation TM, and its use in consensus formation, planning, problem solving and research. It also discusses workshop preparation and design, leadership styles, dealing with difficult behaviors, and special applications such as its use in large groups and for planning purposes.

5 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Facilitative Knowledge.......2005-02-23

I grabbed this book immediately when I saw it. I have been using the facilitation models from its companion piece, "The Art of Focused Conversation," for nearly four years with outstanding results. I knew this book would provide me with similar benefits.

Focused on moving from discussion to action, this book describes the "Consensus Workshop." This method for captures the perceptions of employees, allows them to process their multiple perceptions, moves them to decisions, and awakens the passion in employees necessary to achieve goals. It is broken into four partes: The Method, The Finer Points, Leading Workshops, and Workshop Applications.

The method itself (Part 1) is straightforward, and enough to get the reader off and running in the first 49 pages. However, the richness of the explanations found in Part 2 helps the reader understand why the method can be so powerful. Part 3 is invaluable because its suggestions (say, dealing with difficult behaviors in a group, or developing your style) apply to so many contexts outside this specific technique. Part 3 alone is worth the price of the book for anyone who facilitates groups. Part 4 lists applications, both for working meetings through a series and adapting the method for groups from 1 to 100+.

I like this book a great deal. As a stand-alone book, it provides the reader with enough tools and techniques to successfully facilitate groups to consensus and action. As a companion piece to "The Art of Focused Conversation" its power increases exponentially. It will benefit anyone who has to lead a group or team through discussions to action.

          Book Description

          From the reviews:

"Bulging with concise explanations and 142 clarifying diagrams and photos, the book probably represents some of the best pedagogy in the solar system on these topics. … just the right level for most undergraduates. … Open-minded scientists looking for an authoritative tour of astrobiology will enjoy the book … . The author’s summary of exoplanet detection techniques is excellent … . Jones keeps us interested with simple explanations … . His approach is quite an achievement … . " (Charley Lineweaver, Physics Today, February, 2005).

"This is a textbook suitable for university use. … this is one of the best. … includes excellent recent images of Mars, Europa and elsewhere, and is richly illustrated with explanatory diagrams. … There is a useful index, a glossary and a list of ‘resources’ (websites and books)." (Malcolm Walter, Australian Physics, Vol. 42 (3) July/August 2005)

"What is required for life, and where might it have evolved? … These are the questions that are addressed in this wide ranging, well written and thought provoking book. … But for anyone wishing to follow … Jones’ book is an excellent start." (Dr. C.M.Linton, Contemporary Physics, Vol. 46 (3), 2005)

"This book centres on the search for life in the Solar System and beyond. It includes an overview of many of the disciplines involved in this field of research, which include astronomy, biology and geology. … It was good to see that the astronomy has been kept fairly descriptive and not too mathematical. This keeps the flow of the book. … As an overview of the key subjects involved in astrobiology for a university course, I think this book is successful." (James Silvester, Astronomy Now, March, 2005)

Although, at present there is no firm evidence for extraterrestrial life, enormous progress has been made in recent years, both in our understanding of life on Earth and of the potential for life existing elsewhere in the universe. Life in the Solar System and Beyond embaces aspects form all the osre related fields (astronomy, planetary science, chemistry, biology, and Physics). This excellent and thought-provoking introduction:

5 out of 5 stars A great background for the origins of earth and life.......2005-08-23

This book gives the technically literate but non-specialist reader an excellent background for the origin of the earth and life on it, along with the same for other planets. It has what I feel is a perfect mix of qualitative and quantitative material. The author is not afraid to use equations and graphs to complete an idea, but the essentials are clear without them. My cosmology book club consisting of an MD, a PhD, engineers, and non-techncal folks is enjoying discussing it. The various measurements that can search for life on other planets are well described.

5 out of 5 stars Astrobiology, with an emphasis on extrasolar planets.......2004-12-01

This is a well written book. But there is a question: if you see this book in the store, you may think you are seeing double.

You see, there are two books which are almost the same. This one. And "An Introduction to Astrobiology" edited by Iain Gilmour and Mark Sephton. Which one should you buy?

          This one.

This book is a little more up-to-date. It has more about what you ought to want the book for anyway, the extrasolar planets. Still, the books are nearly identical, the more so given that the author of this book wrote two of the extrasolar planet chapters in the other book.

If you get the other book, you'll get a chapter on Titan that this book doesn't have. And prettier pictures, and pages with a nicer and glossier feel.

Still, if you want a book on astrobiology in general, well, both books skimp a little on the biology part. My choice for an overall astrobiology book would be Lunine's book, rather than either this one or the Gilmour book.

5 out of 5 stars STILL A VALID, SOLID STUDY.......2006-09-23

I read this one when it was first published. It was good then. I recently gave it a reread...it still is. Fagan has given us a pretty good look at the peopling of the world as we understand it today. There have been some recent discoveries that may or may not change the views in this work, but overall it is still a solid bit of writing. These recent discoveries deal with time lines for the most part and little effect the author's work. This is a pleasing read, easy to understand and rather captivating. Like any good work of this nature, it leaves many questions unanswered, and that is as it should be. The book does make you think and that is probably one of its greatest strengths. Recommend this one highly.

4 out of 5 stars Good story, science, conclusions.......2003-12-01

Brian Fagan is more than fair. In this interesting and at the same time informative work he continually offers multiple answers to questions. Did we become human in Africa and then undertake the journey or did we develop independently? How and why did they travel? Why were the Neandertals so late in populating Europe despite its closeness.

The author is, if anything, open-minded, giving all sides to an argument. He beings with a discussion of the mythical "Eve" and who she might have been and where she might have been from. He then discusses the evolutionary aspects and the paleontological finings. One interesting chapter concerned the populating of Asia. The job is made all the more difficult because of the discovery of very ancient man in such places as China and Indonesia who were not homo sapiens.

A discussion of the peopling of the Americas follows with the obvious conclusion (based on dentistry) that Native Americans are descended from notheastern Asians. the book contains several illustrations and charts that add to the story.

5 out of 5 stars Dispersion of modern humans.......2000-11-26

Excellent, easy-to-read book about how modern humans dispersed and populated our world. Tracks human colonists to Australia, across the bitter Russian steppe to Siberia and Americas, etc.

                        Book Description

Rose Isenberg is a red-haired beauty, born into New York's Madison Avenue society, to Adele and Michael Isenberg. She is an only child, a Vassar graduate, and heiress to her father's successful fur empire. Her life is the fairy tale world of a Jewish-American Princess.

Her mother, Adele, has her sights set on the handsome and eligible Alex Kavinsky as the perfect match for Rose. He is a plastic surgeon and a member of one of Manhattan's wealthiest families.

Marvin Zorsky is a struggling writer and son of a bookshop merchant and seems, at first blush, a most unlikely prospect for Rose. However, Rose gradually comes to see her expectations in Alex and Marvin change, in ways that take her by surprise, since life is not all about what is on the surface.

Enter Jules Alexander, a gorgeous model, who meets Marvin one fateful afternoon on the Princess Sophia……

Princess from Manhattan weaves this love story with humorous vignettes from the 1970s to create an entertaining and heartfelt tapestry.

                        Book Description

In 1969, Henry Catto was selling insurance in San Antonio, Texas. Just twenty years later, he presented his credentials as ambassador to the Court of St. James's to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, at Buckingham Palace. In this engaging memoir, he retraces his journey from Texas outsider to Washington insider, providing a fascinating look at the glamour, day-to-day work, and even occasional danger that come with being a high-level representative of the United States government. Catto's posts brought him into contact with the world's most powerful leaders and left him with a wealth of stories, which he recounts amusingly in these pages. He was the official host for Queen Elizabeth's visit to America during the Bicentennial year--and one of José Napoleon Duarte's protectors after his failed 1972 coup attempt in El Salvador. Catto accompanied Richard Nixon on his historic trip to Russia, sparred with Bill Moyers and the producers of "60 Minutes" as Caspar Weinberger's spokesman at the Pentagon, and hosted George Bush's planning meeting with Margaret Thatcher at the beginning of the Persian Gulf War. In telling these and other stories, he offers behind-the-scenes glimpses into how political power really works in Washington, London, and other world capitals.

5 out of 5 stars Ambassadors at Sea; a footnote to history........1999-07-04

Ambassadors at Sea by Ambassador Henry Catto is an informative look through the back door and into the closets of world leaders. By recounting his experience on a very personal level, you live with the author among those on the international stage whose personas are usually submerged into and behind their official facades. Ambassadors at Sea is thus a footnote to history, and will appeal to those who wish to delve deeper than the news releases and headline portraits of those who shaped the world during a very crucial period of our history.

5 out of 5 stars This book is both fun to read and informative........1999-06-02

"Ambassadors at Sea" by Henry Catto is an informative, and at the same time, delightful book. Ambassador Catto has recounted his experiences as ambassador first to El Salvador and later to Great Britain, as Chief of Protocol, as head of the United States Information Agency, Ambassador to the European Office of the United Nations, and spokeperson for the Pentagon under Secretary of Defense,Cap Weinberger. There are wonderful anecdotes about all the Presidents he served under:Reagan,Bush, Nixon, and Ford, as well as interesting asides about Nancy Reagan, Henry Kissinger, Margaret Thatcher, and countless foreign dignitaries.Catto expresses his reactions to the famous and the fatuous in an honest and self-deprecating way. For example:he refers to a conversation with Nancy Reagan at a dinner party by commenting,"To say she was hard to talk to would be a gross understatement",or on President Nixon;"I never heard anyone accuse him of having a sense of humor".These bits of information make for fun reading., This book is both educational and enjoyable. What more can you ask!

5 out of 5 stars A delightful and seductive private tour of a public life........1999-05-21

Ambassadors At Sea, a private memoir of a public life, reads like a novel that you can't put down. In in, Catto---a self-described small-town Texas boy who grew up to be a Washington insider--takes us on a tour of his career in various high-level positions under several Presidents, culminating with his appointment as Ambassador to the Court of St. James, where he hung out with such world-stage stars as Margaret Thatcher. But Catto's book is not a dry laundry-list of a diplomatic career, but rather, a witty, moving, and always fascinating story of the wholly human characters who most of us see only through headlines---as well as the personal sacrifices and conflicts that Catto himself experienced. Throughout it all, Catto is charmingly self-effacing and always very witty. I simply couldn't put the book down--and was sorry when I came to the last page.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK SHOULD BE MADE INTO A MOVIE!.......1999-03-02

This Ambassador has written a beautiful and witty book. It is a joyous romp through a glamorous career in which he finds himself in the "sea" of the world's great and powerful and enjoys every minute of it. Ambassador Catto worked in important positions under several administrations from the 60's to the 90's, including appointments in the Departments of State and Defense, US Ambassador to the UN (Geneva), Great Britain and El Salvador, as well as Chief of Protocol, and Head of US. Information Service and League of Pan American States. His perceptions give depth and breadth to the history and newsmakers of the past four decades, and shine light through keyholes of the rich and powerful. Ambassador Catto's view is so optimistic and good natured, you can't help but feel the past 50 years have been great after all. American Ambassadors have a reputation for being big financial contributors to presidential campaigns but not necessarily knowledgeable of languages, world history or foreign affairs, or sensitive, compassionate and tactful. Ambassador Catto, however breaks the stereotype and is uniquely qualified. As a knowledgeable businessman he was able to promote American business interests abroad, and being fluent in French and Spanish and a lover of people, and art and literature of other cultures, he was always comfortable in any society. His book is written with unfailing generosity of spirit, humbly giving credit for his successes throughout the book to his brilliant wife and others, including his good friend, President George Bush. He manages to be humorous, poignant and poetic all at the same time. I think his book should be made into a movie with Bill Murray starring as the lovable roving chief of protocol and ambassador. It wouldn't be Saturday Night Live, but it would be lively.

                          Book Description

The tale begins with author and his father journeying from their home in a white Mercury to a largely fictional land beyond Maysville, Kentucky, where both father and son were born. This annual commute is ostensibly for the purpose of hunting squirrels, but they are seeking more, and in doing so they discover solace and legends in those wet, foggy woods above the Ohio River and in the lovable characters they discover there and in the nearby town of Persimmon Gap.

Cogan's Woods offers a fond look back at 1960s small-town America: sweating red metal Coca-Cola coolers filled with bottled soft drinks whose caps are imbedded outside the store in "an asphalt apron paved with hundreds of flattened bottle caps, country stores where "old timers of various shapes and sizes leaned into their stories," fresh-picked tomatoes that were "still warm and tasted of the sun," and legendary baseball teams like the Undefeated Persimmon Gap Bobcats."

Ellis offers lasting images and sensory paintings, all gleaned from this land where he and his father traveled, hunted, and rested. In the end, it is this simple mantra, offered first by a gravedigger and later by his dying father that settles into the boy's heart: "It's important to remember, it's so important to remember."

My Dad was an avid squirrel hunter after the War (II) and brought me along with him long before I could ever carry a gun. He involved me in many of his favorite outdoor activities and I still thank him, although he is gone, every day for his patience and love for me. Ron Ellis is a very talented writer that has evoked vivid memories of those hunts with my Dad. It is a book that I carry with me when I travel. I read a few pages each night before turning in. It is that good.....

As Dorothy Parker once said in a review, "This book should not be tossed aside lightly, it should be thrown with great force." This is Part Duex of Ms. Nelson's self-aggrandizing, exploitative effort to wring yet another buck or two out of her experiences with her two notable exes - Rita Mae Brown and Martina Navaratilova. Please do not spend the money for this thing - we really don't want to encourage her.

                              5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ.......1998-08-24

When I finished this book, I had a new respect for Judy Nelson. With everything that has been said and printed about her she still finds it in herself to let us in and get to know her a little better. Since the only things that we really knew before her books, was that she left her husband and kids for another woman, she took alot of heat for that from both sides, gay and straight. She took even more heat when the two women parted company and her first book. It takes real strength and character to come through all of this and still refuse to tear Martina apart like she has done to Judy. I for one really thank Ms. Nelson for her honesty.

This book was magnificent. If you have ever been in love and lost that love, this is the book you need to read. I have read her first book"Love Match" and it was wonderful, but this book is "double" wonderful. She seems at peace finally and once again happy with her life. And if anyone deserves it, it is Ms. Nelson. She helped me in my time of crisis. I lost someone very special to me, and I read her book. The courage she exemplifies, made me feel like I had a friend to talk to. She is a wonderful person, makes you feel like she is your best friend. I truly hope she writes another wonderful book.

This book, is a definate for anyone who needs the courage to make difficult choices in their lives. Judy Nelson has become a heroine of mine just for her convictions and her honesty. I really related to her. I read Love Match but found her changed and "still" in this one. I wish she would write more!!!
