5 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2007-02-16

I had a chance to look through this book when my son brought it home from his school library. It seems pretty thorough, and offers a glimpse at the wide varity of vocations and opportunities available in today's military. If you are unfamiliar with the military, this guide can help you get educated on your choices prior to seeing a recruiter.

If you are interested in becoming a military officer, you may want to look at "How to Become a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Military," by Ron Taylor.

              Book Description

Solar-type activity over the whole range of the electromagnetic spectrum is a phenomenon inherent in the majority of low- and moderate-mass main sequence stars. In this monograph observational results are summarized in a systematic and comprehensive fashion. The analysis of the various manifestations of such stellar activity leads to the identification of these phenomena with macroscopic non-linear processes in a magnetized plasma. Comparative study of flare stars and the Sun has become increasingly fruitful and is presently an active field of research involving stellar and solar physicists, experts in plasma physics and high-energy astrophysicists. This book will provide them with both an introduction and overview of observational results from the first optical photometry and spectroscopy, from the satellite telescopes International Ultraviolet Explorer to Hubble Space Telescope, XMM-Newton and Chandra, as well as with the present physical interpretation of solar-type activity in main sequence stars. Gershberg's 40-year career studying UV Cet type stars and related objects enables him to provide readers with expert insight into the characteristics of such stars in both the quiescent state and during flares and the reliability of the data over the electromagnetic spectrum and wide temporal scales.

                Book Description

Hydrogen bonding is crucial in many chemical and biochemical reactions, as well as in determining material properties. A good insight into the theoretical methods of treating hydrogen bonding is essential for those wishing to model its effects computationally in a wide range of fields involving hydrogen bonding, as well as those wishing to extract the maximal amount of information from experimental data. Theoretical Treatments of Hydrogen Bonding presents the reader with the state of the art of the key theoretical approaches to hydrogen bonding and considers the hydrogen bond from the various aspects. The first five chapters are devoted to the methods used for treating the electronic basis of hydrogen bonding, including a consideration of the electrostatic model, density functional theory and molecular orbital methods. Later chapters consider the dynamics of hydrogen bonds with particular attention to the treatment of proton transfer; manifestations of dynamics as reflected in infrared spectra and nuclear magnetic relaxation are also considered. Hydrogen bonding in liquids and solids such as ferroelectrics are included. The book concludes with an epilogue which discusses the likely development of hydrogen bond computations in very large chemical systems. Theoretical Treatments of Hydrogen Bonding offers the reader a comprehensive view of the current theoretical approaches to hydrogen bonding. It is a valuable presentation of theoretical tools useful to those looking for the most appropriate approach for treating a particular problem involving hydrogen bonding.

2 out of 5 stars There might be... but not in our solar system, says Branley.......2000-06-26

By relating famous hoaxes such as the radio broadcast of H.G. Well's War of the Worlds and discussing recent space probes to Mars, Mercury and Venus, Branley comes to the conclusion that there might be life beyond Earth... but not in our solar system. While he admits there may be possibilities of life in other galaxies, he claims there most likely isn't life in our solar system except for what exists on Earth. This is an outdated and inaccurate view. The goal of the series is to introduce basic science concepts to young children, but the only concept I came away with was very Earth-centric - none of our species could live on Mars, ergo, there is no life on Mars. Branley never defines life. In truth, we cannot assume "life" to be carbon based, requiring warm temperatures and sunlight. In fact, on our very own planet we have found species that do not require these things. Instead of writing "there is no life on Mars," Branley should have written, "There is no life as we know it today on Mars. If this idea is too scary for young children, perhaps there isn't a need for a low-level book on this topic. At the least, the book serves as a jumping off point for an interesting discussion. The authorial intrusion in the book ("People also say it's silly to believe there is life on them [other planets]. I don't think so.") is annoying and condescending. The writing is too simplified; children could handle more details than are given about the planets, the space program, and the various ways alien life has been envisioned in our culture. The illustrations are a bizarre mix of simple brightly colored collage style pictures and photographs. The diagram of the solar system is great, and whimsical aliens decorate the end papers and many pages. A page of further activities concludes the book. No works are cited, no resources for more information are listed. A glossary, index and timeline would have been appropriate inclusions. This book was originally published in 1984; it needs much more overhaul than it received.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic and Educational.......2000-06-11

This book talks in children's words about a subject that adults learned so long ago that they may have forgotten. The artistic side of the book keeps children entertained without taking away from the subject content. My five year old loves this book.

As a child, author John H. Davis spent summers with Jackie and the Bouviers and was like a member of the family. In this, his third book on the aristocratic clan, Davis covers Jackie's life until her first wedding. Mr. Davis possessed great disdain for Jackie's mother and includes many nasty details about her--including how she hired a young woman to trap her husband in verifiable infidelity. He also writes that a close friend of Jackie's father later moved to Texas and became the "principal mentor and friend" to Lee Harvey Oswald--a revelation that puts a new twist on the conspiracy theory.

                            Book Description

Critical Acclaim for Jacqueline Bouvier John Davis's intimate memoir of his beloved first cousin "Readers longing for a dignified and elegant approach to Jackie's early years will enjoy this biographical gem by John H. Davis." —Boston Herald "Goes a long way to highlight the formative influence of her privileged back-ground and her warm relationship with her father, the philandering Jack (Black Jack) Bouvier." —Los Angeles Times "Re-creates a colorful, fast-fading slice of American life as it flourished in the shadows of toll hedges and long lineages." —The Miami Herald "The most charming and reliable in the batch [of Jackie books] is Davis's memoir." —The Atlanta Journal and Constitution "Entertaining, a guilty pleasure." —The Associated Press "This tender memoir of Jackie's early years sheds much light on the future woman we all wanted to know but never could." —The Star-Ledger (Newark)

2 out of 5 stars an ok book.......2003-10-27

This book was good, but it only talked about her childhood. There was nothing about Onassis and her life after she married JFK. It didn't even mention her kids. John H. Davis also needs to learn to stick to the subject, he would often wonder off into stories about himself. If I cared about him I would have gotten a book about John H. Davis, but I didn't, I got a book on Jacqueline Bouvier. No one really cares what she did day by day of her childhood. We just really need the basic stuff. My final words are that it was a good book about her childhood and thats it, so i believe this book doesn't deserve more than two stars because there was more to Jacqueline's life than just her childhood and it doesn't even talk about her White House expirence or how she died.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book about Jackie's childhood.......2000-08-09

This was one of the first books I read about Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and though I've read many since, I still consider this one of the best. It is filled with reminisces of events experienced by the author, a cousin of Jackie's who kept in touch with her throughout her life. The author has done extensive research into both the Bouviers and the Kennedys in his other writings - this book is an interesting and informative combination of that research and his personal memories of Jackie as a child and young woman. Highly recommended to all who wish to learn more about the less documented part of Jackie's life.

If one is interested in learning about Jackie Kennedy's early childhood and teen years, this is the perfect book to examine. The author, a cousin of the late First Lady, shared many of her early experiences and thus provides excellent primary source material. Also noteworthy are photographs from Jackie's childhood and teen years

                                Book Description

Cracker Times and Pioneer Lives brings together the reminiscences of two pioneers who came of age in antebellum Florida's Columbia County and the nearby Suwannee River Valley. Though they held markedly different positions in society, they shared the adventure, thrill, hardship, and tragedy that characterized Florida's pioneer era. With sensitivity, poignancy, and humor, George Gillett Keen and Sarah Pamela Williams record anecdotes and memories that touch upon important themes of frontier life and reveal the remarkable diversity of Florida's settlers.

4 out of 5 stars Cracker Times and Pioneer Lives: The Florida Reminiscences of George Gillett Keen and Sarah Pamela Williams.......2007-01-12

Very interesting book with a good deal of first-hand information. I enjoyed it very much, though I did note an error regarding the short biograpical information given on Archibald McNeill. The author correctly lists most of his early life (before 1845), however he confuses another man with the subject, thereafter. Archibald McNeill actually relocated to Texas in the early 1840's.

                                4 out of 5 stars Crackers........2005-07-25

Crackers were NOT the colorful common folk of Florida. Crackers were NOT Florida cowboys with whips. 'Crackers' were the bottom of the white social order in 19th Century Florida. Achille Murat, an early pioneer of Florida, said of them, "poor citizens, generally not very industrious who, not possessing the means of buying lands, live upon those of others, and work them until they are expelled by the proprietors. Their poverty is entirely the fruit of their idle and drunken habits.....every dispute is amicably terminated by the fist." 'Crackers' were vagrants and drunks and poachers and thieves and beggars. So the authors need to re-consider the title of their book. No self-respecting Floridians of the 19th Century would think of themselves as 'Crackers." The white-trash were 'Crackers.'

5 out of 5 stars This book is GREAT!.......2001-08-26

This book is a great book for anyone who enjoys a good, humourus, story. The first narrator, Geroge Gillet, is the Florida equivlent to Mark Twain. His humor and writing styles are remnants of a time long ago. The second narrator, Sarah Pamela, is a southern daughter caught in problems not of her time. It is her diary and her story of live in historic Florida. This book illustrates Florida as it has long been forgotten as the expanse of condos on the beach has given it a new face. This is a story of old Florida as it will never be totally forgotten.

                                    Book Description

This is a multi-generational political history of the Hatoyamas, a family that has participated at the highest levels of Japan's parliamentary government from its inception in the late 1800s. The Hatoyama family is one of the most prominent political families in modern Japanese government. It has produced six members of the Diet, Japan's parliament, many of whom have served as cabinet members and party leaders. Due to the family's political legacy, they have often been likened to the Kennedy family in American politics (though they have been spared the tragedy and scandal visited upon the Kennedys). Despite the significance of the Hatoyamas to modern Japanese politics, this is the first comprehensive study available in English. In tracing the rising political fortunes of this family, it is also possible to study the role of hereditary politicians in Japan, the growth and evolution of Japanese political parties, and, perhaps most importantly, the way political leadership functions in Japan, a society known more for consensus-building than for strong leaders.

Even more miraculous than winning the Tour de France seven times in a row, was Lance Armstrong's first win - after his bout with testicular cancer. It made his feat a beacon of hope for other cancer survivors. Armstrong's Comeback from Cancer is a lively account by veteran cycling writer Samual Abt of his first career, his cancer period, and his memorable recovery and first Tour victory.

                                    5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2003-09-14

I found this book to be amazingly awesome and that if you are a true cyclist, you should read this book. everytime after I read it, it inspires me to ride more often. I strongly suggest this book if you like hearing about miracles happening. I thought it was amazing how Lance over comes cancer and continues to win 5 straight Le Tour de France titles.

2 out of 5 stars read its not about the bike.......2002-01-16

read its not about the bike it may have been "ghost written" but it has the proper prespective and an editor that passed high school english.

2 out of 5 stars ace journalist goes for the fast buck with old clippings.......2000-08-13

A book on the most dominant american cyclist of his generation by the only mainstream american sports journalist that actually understands the sport. the problem is that this book is nothing more than a compilation of old articles, and obviously done in a rush as well. typos litter the book, the images are far from impressive (the majority are from the '99 tour, and have as much quality as a fans pics taken with a disposable camera). altogether a waste of my money. if you want to learn about armstrong, then buy 'it's not about the bike', and don't waste your time or money on this.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Lance Armstrong's Best.......2000-07-25

Of the various books about Lance Armstrong, this is easily the most readable and the most atractively presented. It tells the story of Armstrong's early career as well as his painful recovery and amazing comeback and victory in the 1999 Tour de France. Author Samuel Abt and photographer James Startt have put together a personally involved work that makes the reader feel intimately familiar with Armstrong.

5 out of 5 stars The straight story.......2000-03-05

Not much to say, except that Sam Abt has known Lance Armstrong for the better part of a decade and therefore has insight that other sports writers resoundingly lack. If you want to know more about Armstrong, this book is FAR preferable to the rider's terribly (ghost) written autobiography.
