Latinos will become the largest minority group in the United States in the 21st century, but remain largely outside the financial mainstream. For example, the Harvard University Joint Center for Housing Studies reported in March 2000 that 44% of Latinos own their own homes, compared with 75% of whites.

According to the Federal Reserve, despite an economic expansion of record length, there is vast disparity in wealth (all assets, including homes, autos, stocks, and savings accounts) between whites and nonwhites. The median net worth for Latino, African-American, Asian, and other minority families was $16,400 in 1998, the most recent year for which the Federal Reserve has data. That figure is just 17.28% of the median net worth of $94,900 for non-Latino white families, virtually unchanged from 17.23% in 1992 (although the disparity in income is much smaller: 62%).

The wealth gap is much greater than the income gap for various reasons. Minorities, including Latinos, typically have less access to credit for starting businesses, and are less likely to invest in the stock market. They are also less likely to have accounts at financial institutions, doing business instead with check cashers and payday lenders, the latter of whom often charge interest equal to a 500% annual percentage rate.

This much-needed book not only examines the cultural factors that help explain these trends among Latinos, it also offers advice to Latinos on setting up and using accounts at banks and credit unions, saving for retirement or college, sending money to family members in other countries, buying stocks and bonds, negotiating for a home, and applying for credit. It also lists financial institutions and sources of bilingual financial service information and provides Spanish-language translations of key financial terms. Castaneda, a former Knight-Bagehot Fellow in business and economics reporting at Columbia University who has covered business and finance as a freelance writer and a reporter for the the San Francisco Chronicle, has thoroughly researched her topic.

Although oriented toward Latinos, this book would be helpful to anyone who wants to take control of and improve their finances.

This is a wonderful book. It gives you a lot of insight into Latino attitudes about money, then tells you how to make sure those attitudes don't screw up your personal finances. It's very well-written and is easy to read and understand. In fact, anyone, Latino or not, could benefit from reading this book. And it has a beautiful cover.

What % of people in your organisation really feel inspired?.......2001-06-12

Ask the question above to managers of an organization and the answer will be "about 15%". According to a study by Lynda Gratton, Author of "Living Strategy", many of us are working in companies where neither our colleagues nor we feel inspired. A 1996 study showed that the percentage ranged between 19 and 8% for companies such as HP, GlaxoWellcome, Citibank, ... Similarly, less than 20% of people feels that the top management is well informed about what people at lower levels think and do. Answers to other questions are better but still: When questioned on integrity, 70% people at the best company of the tested group believed their employer has high integrity, whereas this figure dropped to less than 35% an the least "integer" company of this leading edge research consortium. It's the author's aim to create inspirational companies, which build hope, trust and excitement. When you see the figures above, this clearly is needed. In fact, I discoveed this book when a customer asked me to help them to work on their "integrity".

The least this book will do is serve as an eye-opener. Given what I came accross in companies, that by itself is already important. I have to agree with the author that very few companies understand the relationship between increases in revenue and employee emotions.

The approach the author presents for "tackling" this enormous task clearly has its advantages over "older" models of managing human resources. However, I recommend to complement this book with messages you'll find in Peter Block's "Flawless Consulting Fieldbook & Companion" and in David Cooperrider's "Appreciative Inquiry: Rethinking Human Organization". In these 2 books you'll find inspiration for better ways of implementing the path Lynda Gratton shows us. For that reason, my rating is limited to 4 stars. Still, you need to buy it to understand the "Why" of the path and to have an additional "drawing".

Anyway, start putting people at the heart of corporate purpose!

"My purpose...is simple: to share with you the experiences of three companies (HP, Glaxo Wellcome, and Motorola) and to review the wider body of research which together have convinced me of the prime role of people in organizational success. But that only raises the 'so what' question...so what if people are at the centre of organizational success? I believe that putting people at the heart of organizational success has implications on 'how we think' about organizations and 'what we do' within them. The first part of this book addresses the question of how we think about organizations if we put people at the heart of corporate purpose. For me it raises three basic tenets of being human: we operate in time, we search for meaning, and we have a soul. With this comes a set of nine organizational and managerial capabilities that support these tenets. The second part of the book addresses the question of what we can do to create living strategies that place people at the centre. Over the years I have refined a six-step process that puts people at the heart of corporate success. This, together with the workbook that follows, provides a frame for you to move from this as rhetoric to action-based reality" (pp.3-4).

In this context, Lynda Gratton firsty introduces the three tenets and the nine capabilities of new agenda as follows:

I. First tenet: we operate in time

* Past beliefs, hopes and commitments influence our current behavior: the 'memory of the past'.

* Current behavior is influenced by beliefs about what will happen in the future: the 'memory of the future'.

* Skills and knowledge take many years to develop.

* Human development progresses through a shared sequence.

* Attitudes and values are resistant to rapid change.

Capabilities:

1. Build visionary capabilities.

2. Develop scanning capabilities.

3. Create strategic capabilities.

II. Second tenet: we search for meaning

* We strive to interpret the clues and events around us, we actively engage with the world to seek a sense of meaning, to understand who we are and what we can contribute.

* Symbols, which may be events or artefacts are important in creating a sense of meaning.

* Over time groups of people create collective viewpoints, a sense of shared meaning.

Capabilities:

4. Develop diagnostic capabilities.

5. Create systemic capabilities.

6. Build adaptive capabilities.

III. Third tenet: we have a soul

* Each of us has a deep sense of personal identity of what we are, and of what we believe in.

* We can trust and feel inspired by our work-and when we do we are more creative.

* We can dream about possibilities and events.

* We can choose to give or withold our knowledge-depending on how we feel.

Capabilities:

7. Develop emotional capabilities.

8. Create trust-building capabilities.

9. Capability to build the psychological contract.

According to Lynda Gratton, to understand 'how' of putting people at the centre of corporate strategy, firstly we must understand 'why' this is crucial. Therefore, at the first stage she explores these tenets and capabilites as briefly mentioned above (more detailed discussion see Part II pp.25-94). At the next stage,to create a living strategy she developes a six-step process (build a guiding coalition, imagine the future, understand current capability and identify the gap, map the system, model the dynamics, and bridge into action) which goes from building commitment to moving into action (more detailed discussion see Part III pp.97-210). Finally, she presents a workbook to provide an opportunity to consider the philosophy and practice of a living strategy (see Part IV pp.213-229).

Many people will read the Prince, The Discourses, or the Art of War and not know what the hell Machiavelli was talking about. I picked this book up, and right away I figured the other books out. This is a required reading if you need to read the Prince, or the other books by Machiavelli.

WARNING:this is NOT Machiavelli but leftist propaganda.......2002-09-15

Less then half of the book is about the life or philosophy of this great thinker. More then half the book is leftist propaganda disguised as objective reasoning obviously intended to indoctrinate the novice - its intended audience. One example should suffice. Margaret Thatcher is made to say: "There is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families." Machiavelli then responds: "Nothing I ever wrote was worse - this is a republican nightmare and a sure recipe for social and political disaster!" If you do not recoil from this exchange then you have already been indoctrinated. Quickly pick up John Locke or the Federalist Papers to recover. Then help the young readers of this book recover.

Excellent Book - Machiavelli as you never knew him.......2000-04-26

I picked this up from a sorting shelf this afternoon, and I am very very glad I did so. This book introduces you to Machiavelli's life and ideas, and then deftly compares his writings to contemporary and recent history. The "running commentary" by Machiavell is fascinating. It's opened my eyes to just how switched-on Machiavelli was, and how earnest and well-intentioned. I'm definitely going to be reading more about Machiavelli - indeed, this book was so good I'm considered changing out of science and into arts to pursue the topic more closely!

I knew very little about Machiavelli before reading this amusing illustrated book. I had heard many 'negative' remarks about him, but just like Nietzsche, Machiavelli is not at all that simple. A fascinating character with much to say that is still quite relevant to our world today. I will definitely go on to read Machiavelli's books. The cartoon sequence featuring Mussolini and Gramsci in a dialog moderated by old Nick was great. Go out and get this book!

Best available synopsis of Machiavellian thought . . ........1999-11-09

Now that McCanles' _Discourse of Il Principe_ is out of print, this is the most readable and insightful analysis / synthesis of Machiavellian thought available. The author catches the dialectical nuances of Machiavelli's thought exactly. But the joy of the text comes from the comparisons between Machiavelli and contemporary figures, e.g., Antonio Gramsci, Benito Mussolini, Margaret Thatcher, Bill Clinton, etc. Must read!

What a sweet, sensuous, evocative book about both the south and childhood as I would like to have experienced it. I didn't want the book to end. I'm disappointed to find this is Ms. Landon's only published book.

This is a short memoir of growing up in the 50's in a rich family. It was a unique perspective for me to see how the other half lives. The food was so complicated and fussy, but it was a fun read.

This book made me long to live her life with the sumptuous formal dinners and beautiful frocks. I never wanted this book to end. The recipies are definately attemptable. The last book of this type I read instructed to use on a "hot fire" or "slow coals". Not really the method I use.... I highly recommend this book, both for the food and the history.

Who was really in the kitchen?.......2001-06-29

Did any other readers of this poetically written daydream notice that while the white people in it sometimes pushed the borders of eccentricity, the black people were straight out of Margaret Mitchell fantasy land? They don't quite chuckle and shuffle, but darned near. The climax is reached in that never-never train ride. Which is more unbelievable--that although the train was segregated, this brave young woman was allowed to escort her quivering protege unchallenged into the dining car, or that the daughter of a doctor was as fawningly grateful as Ms. Landon recalls? Ms. Landon writes a well-turned sentence. And I suppose one must envy her her memory, for its golden, if bogus, glow.

The book focuses on the major initiatives Reagan pursued in his attempt to curb enforcement of those laws: first, his efforts to reform affirmative action by prohibiting mandatory employer use of minority and white female hiring goals, and second, his veto of the Civil Rights Restoration Act. Don Cunningham and Jeff Bleiel have assembled some of the best Beach Boys writings here in this book, "Add Some Music To Your Day." I wasn't around to read these the first time in the "Add Some..." fanzine, but this is GREAT stuff. BRAVO!

Mr. Cunningham's Excellent Critique.......1999-12-30

Because I have begun my doctoral thesis on this very subject, I found that this critique has opened windows that heretofore I have only imagined. Mr. Cunningham must have known his subjects well (or developed a preternatural insight into their oeuvre) and also must possess an astounding knowledge of music, both classical and modern. I would recommend this book to anyone with more than a superficial interest in the subject.

It is the Depression, they all live together, refugees from the outside world, in a little logging shack in Hungry Hollow, on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Hollow is long logged out and now the main activities center on fishing, hunting, shooting the breeze, moonshine and periodic rampages through the town.

They turn a dollar any way they can, play pranks on each other and the townspeople, practice their rugged democracy in a traditional American way, which includes respecting individual eccentricities.

This kid he has a girlfriend and one day she calles him and breaks up with him and he is crushed. He goes and tries to change his image to get her back and she doesnt even notice. He even goes and gets his hair cut, she notices and doesnt even like it she thinks he is weird! She says that he isnt what shes looking for, she wants tough, mean guys. So he decides to go and join the lacross team! He works at it and he makes it. On the first game he goes and tries to get her to notice him and she does. The way that she notices him is when he goes in for the goal and he makes it but he gets tackled! And he breaks his arm, and everyone feels really sorry for him! So now he can't play on the team because his arm is broke. HE tries so hard to get her back but she doesnt notice him. The book was kind of boring and slow it, took me a week to get it done.

He has broke up with his girl freind, well actully she breaks up with him. He thinks he needs to work on something to attract girlsto him. He first cuts his hair at an exspensive sallon. His mom doesent like how much it cost but she understands that he wants to fit in. When he first gets the hair cut his best freind laughs in his face. Then they go to a party with a bunch of girls. So the party gets old after a while and they leave bord. Then he works on eating right to change his body shape. Then he also joins a rugby team to impress his parents and freinds. He ends up breaking some bones. He then ebaresses his freind in order to try to be cool. Then rick and him become best buds again.

This is a terrific novel, one can really relate to the poor guy's situation. The language is appealing to teens (I assume!! I am decades past it but have teen kids who I have given this to). Look forward to the next novel from this author.

Bish Bash Bosh.......2005-01-06

Gotta Get Some Bish Bash Bosh is a witty and entertaining book. I was immediately convinced of the narrator's absolute charm and maturity (all right, so he has some improvements to make, who doesn't?) and drawn into his epic campaign for popularity and confidence. This book is the perfect source for some good laughs, as well as a few helpful tips on how to achieve inner fulfillment in the face of bad hair cuts, unenthusiastic parents, and disloyal girlfriends.
