3 out of 5 stars Missing areas in a Smart Money Investing Guide.......2002-09-06

I was looking for an indepth personal financial planning guide with guidance on decision making -- that is not what this book is. It is more a top level look at financial planning in most areas, in depth in a few areas and totally leaving out other areas.

For example, the book describes many of the financial instruments and has a great worksheet to calculate allocations but does not let the reader know why these allocations are the best. The author goes into 529 College Savings Plans but only describes the top 12 states plan. The 70 pages of glossary and index could be better served by covering the topics in more depth or adding sections on real estate or estate planning.

                    Book Description

Excessive levels of heavy metals can be introduced into the environment, for example, by industrial waste or fertilizers. Soil represents a major sink for heavy metals ions, which can then enter the food chain via plants or leaching into groundwater. In Heavy Metal Ions in the Environment, the author looks at where heavy metals ions come from, how they interact with the environment and how they can be removed from the environment – by a process known as remediation. This book serves as a valuable addition to an increasingly important field of study, which is, at present, served by a limited number of archival texts.

                    * Includes comprehensive coverage of heavy metal ions in the environment
                    * Is practical and easy to read
                    * Is suitable for students and researchers in environmental science and environmental or chemical engineering

A spoof on early computer users and the consultants who advised them. It is the summer of 66, and systems engineer Flambard OHiggins is pressured into quitting the US by his widowed mother who wants him in Canada, safe from the Vietnam draft. But Canada is not the sleepy backwater, nor is systems work there as easygoing he has been led to believe. And never mind the arctic blizzards, he finds himself as much a frequent flyer as he ever was back home. To top it all, President Johnsons call to arms gnaws so much on his conscience that were it not for the overwhelming allure of a fellow consultant of the opposing sex he would be on the first flight back to Detroit. And that consultant is Leslie Ingram, a product of the elite WASP enclave of Westmount, Quebec who championed the feminist cause until disillusioned by the human frailties of its leader at Berkeley. Adrift, she discovers management consulting and management consulting discovers her. She forges ahead, a r! ising star in the profession, until assailed by that mysterious force, that same sweet and cunning hand that has bewitched Flambard. The story gathers pace as these two protagonists of the madcap world of the 60s resolve their conflicts.

This short book is the autobiographical story of Mr. Kanatchikov prior to and during the Russian Revolution of 1917. The protagonist is a blue-collar worker living in the city of St. Petersburg. His experiences at his factory job and his poverty help to fuel his frustration with the system. He begins going to meetings of the Communist Party and other outlawed organizations. Soon his attendance increases to participation, organization, and propaganda. Meanwhile, he moves from job to job as each job he goes to fires him when they discover his activities. The book climaxes with violent protests against the czar, and finally revolution. The book gives a good sense of what it was like to be alive at that point. The author describes his feelings, his words, and his actions as he transforms from passive worker to active protester. The book gives a good inside view of how the Russian Revolution occurs, and should be read by those who seek to understand communism, its roots, and Russian history.

Texas Heroes: A Dynasty of Courage is a collection of stories of men who stayed when others ran, fought against incredible odds, and somewhere along the way became legends. Ranging in time from the eighteenth century to World War II, the tales found in this book explore every facet of bravery, from gutsy scalawags in the early days of Texas exploration to the distinguished Texas Rangers.

Mona Sizer Personalizes Texas History and makes it especially captivating. She develops the personalities of ordinary, and some famous, men who all performed extra-ordinary feats of courage, as she describes the events and circumstances that formed the History of Texas. Each chapter is dedicated to a brave man who made a real impact on the events of his time. She progresses from the 1700's in the Land of Tejas (Texas Indians) as part of the Spanish colony of Mexico to the involvement of Texans in World War II. The diversity of the heritage of the gallant men she accounts is impressive; French, English, Black, Irish, Mexican and German. This book is not only a lesson in courage and History, but also a pleasure to read.

We have all heard of the Alamo, the Texas Rangers, the Civil War, WWII, etc. Ms. Sizer brings to life twelve men, some you probably know and others you never heard of, but who you will come to know. One thing is for certain, all of their stories will bring you excitement and inspiration.

This quote summarizes Mona Sizer's admiration for these men. "The need for a hero arises when civilization is in jeopardy. A special man of steel and sterling silver must step forward from the ranks of softer, gentler golden men who have become too civilized to fight for themselves." She also emphasizes the very name 'Texas' impies a tradition and example of unusual courage.

This world is currently in a war against radical Islam. This is really a conflict between civilizations, where some Muslims feel History has unfairly passed them by. They want to even the score by elliminating those (killing all if they could) involved in Western society through acts of terrorism. They are not associated with a particular nation state, and therefore, a different kind of enemy than we have faced in the past. There are also many in our government, and other governments around the world, who definitely typify the softer, gentler golden men of our time. Is it any wonder that George W. Bush (a Texan) has stepped forward leading the war against these brutal terrorists?

Thank you Mona for brining our attention to twelve courageous men who have made our lives safer and more comfortable. With your meticulous research and writing skills, please bring us a second edition of "Texas Heroes" that includes President George W. Bush in the not-to-distant future.

                                    Book Description

Public Lives, Private Virtues surveys portraits of American Revolutionary heroes in books, magazines, and school texts from 1782 to 1832 and relates these sketches to cultural changes of the period. Faced with rapid and sometimes unsettling change, historians, biographers, and editors of period offered their readers narrative and visual portraits of heroes, hoping to promote classical civic virtues during a time when business-minded Americans increasingly pursued individual gain. The fifty years following the Revolution saw biography shift from historical narration to description of private experience. The most interesting of the biographers, Mason Locke Weems, created an original life of Washington, adapting his style to the needs of book buyers, who were put off by the cost of conventional histories and attracted to the books' entertaining stories. During this period magazine editors in the mid-Atlantic and New England states occasionally wrote sketches of heroes to provide readers examples of virtue, but their major contribution was to publish original graphic portraits. Some magazine illustrators copied portraits by American painters; others fashioned elaborate allegorical pieces. Brief narratives of Revolutionary heroes met the needs of the growing number of New England schoolbook authors especially well. By reading descriptions of the war's heroes and their adventures, authors believed children would learn virtue as well as rhetorical skills. In all their forms during this period, narratives and portraits of Revolutionary heroes extolled classical virtues even though the rise of commerce and Americans' pursuit of individual wealth made these virtues anachronistic.

Although Assuming the Position is, as Rick Whitaker describes it, "a memoir of hustling," don't expect it to be particularly erotic. Whitaker thoroughly deglamorizes male prostitution, depicting it as banal and emotionally numbing rather than sexy or transgressive. Any potential arousal to be gleaned from his exploits is further dampened by the book's highly mannered tone and the rather ordinary quality of Whitaker's psychological discoveries: "I was always pretending to be somebody's friend when I really only wanted his money," runs one such moment of self-reflection. "Of course this is just an extreme form of something we all do in order to get ahead, but such seeming friendliness is never good or heartfelt and it is always a cause, at least for me, of mental and emotional fatigue." Readers may also find themselves frustrated by the memoir's lack of narrative tension: Whitaker did drugs and had sex with men for money for a while, then he stopped, then he wrote a book about how it made him feel. Unfortunately, being able to write grammatically correct sentences about his unusual experiences isn't enough to make Assuming the Position an interesting book. --Ron Hogan

                                    Book Description

Rick Whitaker divulges the complex reasons that drove him to prostitution and reflects on the cost of a life of half-truths and emotional lies. With an unsentimental eye, Whitaker chronicles his descent and eventual resolution.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book -- more philosophy than psychology.......2007-09-13

This book is extremely thoughtful in its insights, and cautious in the drawing of conclusions. If you are looking for a tightly-plotted page-turner, or a humorous romp a la Augusten Burroughs, you have come to the wrong writer. However, I much prefer Whitaker's clear, careful consideration of his past, which leaves one with more to think about and less to know. Most of all, Whitaker wants wants us to consider our own lives, our own hustles, our own self-denial in light of his near-miss with self-destructive oblivion. My favorite sentence: "If hell is other people, I like to think that the time I spent with all those men, and their often bizarre idiosyncrasies, gave me some knowledge that, if only by way of contrast, hints at some qualities of heaven."

                                    3 out of 5 stars Monsters.......2007-06-14

I met Rick 13 years ago when I was only 17 years old. I was living in a very small town at the time, and was not out of the closet. I also was a virgin. I went to high school with his sister. She wanted me to go out to New York with her the summer before my junior year of high school to visit Rick.

Rick and I hit it off, I came out, and then had a 3 week whirlwind "romance" with him in NYC. I had no idea he was doing any of the stuff in this book. What I thought to be a harmless man actually seems like a monster now. When we had sex, he would use lotion instead of lube. I was not aware that there were less painful methods of lubrication. It hurt badly.

Rick had told me that he was in NAMBLA, or going to a convention. I thought it might have been just a fetish for older men and younger men, not teenagers. I read his book. I thought it was pathetic. If even half of it was true, then the book would make him look like an angel compared to what he really is. Sodomizing young boys with lotion instead of lube is about as bad as being raped. Why didn't he write about that?

If you want a more colorful story of a New Yorker who was on lots of drugs , I would read "Party Monster" by James St. James. It follows the life of Michael Alig up until his incarceration for murdering a drug dealer.

Short and an easy read. The author puts in his own diary submissions. The book didn't have an easy flow.

I enjoyed the book. Thought it was well written and edgy. I was never a hustler, but it inspired me to reflect on my own misdeeds. His is a story worth sharing and I'd like to see more biographical work from Rick.

                                    2 out of 5 stars A bit insincere.......2004-06-21

Normally writers try to evoke certain feelings through their writings. I was left wondering, at the end of the book, what feelings Mr. Whitaker was actually trying to evoke. Pity, sympathy, understanding, forgiveness...? Franky, I felt none of that for him. I did feel, however, a bit of disgust. I am not going to assume the position of a moralist and so I won't judge what the author did.

Aside from this, the book itself is not what I would call "quality prose". At times, it reads like a pompous college paper. I found particularly annoying Whitaker's propensity for throwing in quotes from famous figures and for using fancy words (e.g. mendacity, censorious, ennui, modus operandi, etc.) It seemed to me that he was trying to sort of compensate for his "dirty" past by showing off his intellectual side, which he indomitably possesses. What I also found annoying was the fact that the book lacked a clear well-crafted structure. Basically, we have an alternation of quasi-erotic storis with ramblings, masquerading as honest self-revelations, on the author's struggle with his own feelings. To that, you can also add a bunch of diary entries that serve as mere "filler". Frankly, this book is just another cheap commercial trick. On one hand, it aims at pandering to people's desire for quick trills. On the other hand, it aims at achieving the required, in the publishing world, dose of sentimentality taken for honesty. I think that the book would have had a different, more "acceptable" effect had the author reveled the TRUE extent of his hustling, with its nature, as ugly and unpalatable as it mihgt be, being unspared. He doesn't really do so. Either the publisher did not desire too much inappropriate information to come out or the author himself saved it so that it wouldn't completely (it already does to some degree) jar with, or obscure, his cultivated interests (classical music, philosophy, and literature).

Though some people find the book "disarmingly frank", I find it a bit insincere at certain points. Towards the end of it, the author says that he has become "less promiscious" than he was before. That, I guess, implies that there was still some promiscuity going on around the time the book was released. So did Rick Whitaker completely change? The author wants us to think he did that. Do I think he did that? I don't know. I also still don't know why he really went into hustling. To make money or to spite his former boyfriend, Tom (we never found out why Tom left him)? Or perhaps Rick Whitaker was just a narcissistic self-indulgent gay man who craved attention and compliments. If that is so, then the whole book would have a different spin. Sex would be no longer a way for the author to satisfy his "needs" but rather a way for him to feed his ego. This is my take on the book. (...)
