      Book Description

Our Cosmic Origins tells the story of our remarkable adventure on this planet, beginning with a single event in the depths of space. It traces the rich and wonderful history of the Universe, from the Big Bang to the creation of atoms and molecules, from the formation of stars and planets to the emergence of life on Earth. Delsemme brings together cosmology, astronomy, geology, biochemistry, and biology to create a unique look at the complex story of the Universe. He chronicles how the first light atoms were made and formed stars and how heavier atoms were cooked in stars and scattered in space, creating dust mrains and organic molecules. He examines the growing eomplexity of plant and animal life, including the emergence and extinction of dinosaurs. Our Cosmic Origins shows how the coupling of eye and brain led to self-awareness and intelligence. It explores the cosmic coincidences that might explain our existence and concludes with the tantalizing suggestion that intelligent alien life is likely. This provocative book will appeal to anyone who has ever looked at the sky and wondered how we got here. Originally published in French, this edition has been revised to include the most recent research in astronomy and cosmology. Armand Delsemme has published four books and over 230 scientific papers. He received a Sigma Xi award for outstanding research and has had, by order of the International Astronomical Union, an asteroid named after him.

5 out of 5 stars The BIG picture!.......2003-07-20

Skirting metaphysics, this book assembles current science from many disciplines to create an integrated framework for understanding ourselves and the universe we live in. "Life, the universe, and everything," would work as a subtitle for this book that covers all the basics, building a launch pad for further explorations in any direction from biology to theology.

Without getting bogged down in details, Our Cosmic Origins sketches the basic story of reality as it is understood by science today, leaving open the questions that science cannot (and may never be able to) answer. It does get a little technical at times (there are even a few chemical equations) but it reads more like a detective novel than a textbook. The science is necessary to gain the confidence of readers who already have some knowledge of physics, chemistry, and biology. Others can skim these explanations and take the conclusions on faith without losing the bigger truths revealed in this book.

Every thinking person should read this book; it provides a solid foundation relating all empirical knowledge. I can't wait for it to be revised when the unified field theory is discovered!

      5 out of 5 stars Mind-expanding!.......2001-08-04

The book's subtitle reveals an uncommonly wide scope. We get a reconstructed history of our universe from the Big Bang, some 15 billion years ago. The history of the physical universe -- galaxies, stars, planets and the rest -- continues smoothly in the chemical one, and eventually in the evolution of life, on to the gradual emergence of intelligence and consciousness in some branches of the animal kingdom.

Delsemme, after a career in French-speaking Europ, is now Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Toledo, Ohio. His book was first published in French, in 1994. The American edition has been revised, updated and expanded. The author's background in a French, European cultural tradition is a special attraction for the English-speaking reader.

The author has succeeded well in his efforts to reach the non-specialised reader. As Nobel laureate Christian de Duve writes in his brief foreword: "This is an eminently readable and informative account, consistently written in a language that tries to eschew technical difficulties, while remaining solidly anchored to the realities of scientific concepts. Readers could not wish for a better introduction to the history of the universe."

I am myself neither an astronomer, nor a biologist. But I have a long-standing interest in both disciplines. I have read this book with increasing admiration both for the author's wide-ranging knowledge, and his ability to present it in a very palatable form. He also gives the general reader insight into the basics of scientific research. In particular, he exhibits the scientific attitude, which implies hypotheses, which start as creative guesses, but do not emerge as full-fledged theories until tested by carefully designed observations or experiments.

Like most modern astronomers, Delsemme adheres to the Big-Bang theory, emphasizing the increasing evidence in its favour. His own special field is the comets, a subject that has received much attention in the last decade, leading to the daring, but not implausible conclusion that the oceans of the earth have arisen from a massive bombardment of the planet by comets in the first billion years of its existence. Darwin's Natural Selection concept, the scientific basis of his evolution theory, is nowadays accepted as a foundation for biological science as a whole. Delsemme extends Darwin's creative insight not only to the creation of the physical world, but also, at the other end, to the world of the mind. Man also , like the physical universe he inhabits, is a product, literally, of star dust.

This is popular science at its best. A fascinating, mind-expanding book. For further reading I suggest Edelman & Tononi: A Universe of consciousness.

5 out of 5 stars Emergence of the biosphere.......2000-11-26

This reference is easy to read, and condenses a vast knowledge ranging from the Big Bang to the emergence of human intelligence, into a moderately compact volume. This reference tends to emphasize the topics related to the author's astrophysical background and interest in the emergence of our biosphere.

3 out of 5 stars Good if you already know quite a bit about the subject.......1999-06-11

Despite being promoted as an introduction to cosmology and the origin of life for the general reader, this book assumes that you already know quite a bit about these things. For example, the Big Bang theory is described only in a one-page appendix and such fundamental concepts as Hubble's Law or the structure of matter are not explained, presumably because the author considers that too elementary--things everyone already knows about. But my non-science-major students certainly don't. When the first thing they encounter in the chapter on the origin of the universe is a cryptic argument that the vacuum genesis theory is superior to the singularity theory, they are lost, and it doesn't get better from there. The material on the origin on life, for example, assumes at least a basic familiarity with organic chemistry and molecular biology.

Throughout the text, the author promotes his own views, often sparring with opponents, usually unnamed. Chief among these views is the hypothesis that both water and the organic building blocks for life were delivered to the earth by comets. Alternative hypotheses, such as that the source of water is degassing of the earth's interior, are dismissed in such an offhand way that the uninitiated reader is unlikely to even realize what is happening. The only instance where Professor Delsemme is explicit in identifying an opposing position is the case of Fred Hoyle and his view that life itself, not just organic molecules, arose in outer space.

There is not much geology in this book, but what there is contains some errors, including an incorrect explanation of the origin of marine magnetic anomalies, confusion of "era" and "epoch," various creative spellings of Cretaceous (which may be the translator's doing), and, in a brief desciption of dinosaurs, use of the terms "sauropod" and "ornithopod" as though they were synonyms for "sauriscian" and "ornithiscian."

Nevertheless, there is much that is interesting and worthwhile in this volume for the reader who already knows the basics, and is aware of the uncertainties, controversies, and alternatives that swirl around many of these subjects. The chapter I enjoyed reading most is the one on the possibilities of life beyond our solar system. So, read this book if you are already into cosmology and the question of the origin of life and want to get a provocative slant on these topics, but not if you are looking for a ground-floor introduction.

      5 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking voyage through space and time.......1998-09-22

This book is the only one that I am aware of that covers a wide variety of topics ranging from the creation of the universe to the evolution of life on earth and the possible existence of life elsewhere. It is an up to date account of the current knowledge in the field of cosmology. The author is very objective and does an excellent analysis of current theories and explains them in a fashion that does not require you to have a PhD in physics. The book is a must for astronomy, cosmology enthusiasts and anyone in general who ponders when looking at the sky at night and asks themselves fundamental questions such as where do we come from ? how did it all start ? and where are we going ?

          Book Description

One way to understand science is as a selection process. David Hull, one of the dominant figures in contemporary philosophy of science, sets out in this volume a general analysis of this selection process that applies equally to biological evolution, the reaction of the immune system to antigens, operant learning, and social and conceptual change in science. Science and Selection brings together many of Hull's most important essays on selection (some never before published) in one accessible volume.

            Karma's a Bitch by J.Gail

If you think you can do somebody dirty and get away with it, just because you didn't get caught, you're dead wrong. All of that dirt comes back to you one way or another.

Tony Jackson learns this lesson the hard way. Labeled the "asshole of West Philly," Tony holds no shame in having other women in his girlfriend Quanisha's bed. There is little remorse after he knocks off a convenience store and beats the cashier with a gun. He'll rob from his girl, his friends, people he doesn't know and your mama. Whoever, he doesn't care. And we all know that when you get money wrong, you can't hold onto it for nothing! The question is when will Tony figure that out? Maybe when he starts getting his Karma instantly and mercilessly he'll get the hint.

In fact, when will Tony get the big picture? That there's no future in his game. Will a dose of `Instant Karma' show him that not contributing to society in any positive way is guaranteed to get him a one way ticket to no where?

            5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!!! However..............................................2007-06-21

i loved this book started out action pack but i felt like i was kind of left hanging with some parts, for instance Jenny just stopped stalkin all together, the mysterious person who attacked in the beginning, and the person who stole his items we didnt' find out who they were. Readers no im not telling u the story those are actually minor parts in the book that do not give away the plot so don't think i took away the story. but overall good read i am going to get more of her books.

5 out of 5 stars What Comes Around Sho Nuff goes around! It's called Karma Baby!!.......2006-10-27

I really enjoyed this book "Karma's A Bitch" by J Gail. I read it in about 2 days. Reading about Philly's most trifling male Tony Jackson will have you hooked. Tony's character pissed me off b/c he is a grown man who refuses to work, and chooses to steal and lie to get money for food, liquor or drugs. He will steal from friends and uses his long time girlfriend Quanisha's apartment to have sex with other girls while she is at work! He even gets an STD and passes it on to Quanisha. He says any thing out of his mouth and talks to people any kind of way. Tony is a truly heartless S-O-B!!!
Tony eventually starts getting his karma and when it comes it does a number on him, and Tony will soon see Karma is most defintley the BIGGEST bitch of all.
I loved this book, a must read!

3 out of 5 stars Back at You With a Vengeance!.......2006-09-26

Tony Jackson was holding it down in West Philly, selling drugs, robbing people, using people and making that paper all at the same time, not worrying about who he hurt in the process of getting his.

Unfortunately Tony did not realize that what he puts out, he is going to get back, and in this instance, quicker than he can put it out there. Going for bad, he is robbed and beaten almost to death resulting in a long hospital stay and some time to consider how he has treated the people in his life he claims he loves.

By bookâ(tm)s end, Tony learns that he cannot cheat on his girlfriend (in her own house and bed), rob and steal and mistreat other women he decides to use because it all comes back to bite him in the end.

Author J. Gail has written a book that shows us that what goes around certainly does come around.

            4 out of 5 stars Real-Life Reality Check.......2006-09-09

Tony Jackson is an ungrateful idiot. He cares about no one but himself and will do any and everything just to please himself. From sleeping with other women in his long-time girlfriend's Quanisha's bed, to stealing from innocent people, Tony has no shame in his game. Tony thinks he's getting away with murder until he gets hit with a dose of instant karma. The question is will Tony ever get the message? Quanisha is a hard working woman who is trying to make something out of herself. Her patience with Tony is wearing thin as a new prospect steps into the picture. Will Quanisha finally show Tony the door? Scoop is Tony's womanizing best friend. Scoop's life makes a turn for the worst when faced with a deadly situation.

Karma's A Bitch is a fascinating read by J. Gail. Gail expertly illustrates the old adage of what goes around comes around. Although the main theme of this story is Tony's behavior, there are some other issues that were included such as HIV, self-actualization, and domestic violence that I thought were good noteworthy topics. There were also some moments in this novel where I found myself laughing out loud. Karma's A Bitch is a real-life reality check for any reader.

            Book Description

Frontiersmen in Blue is a comprehensive history of the achievements and failures of the United States Regular and Volunteer Armies that confronted the Indian tribes of the West in the two decades between the Mexican War and the close of the Civil War. Between 1848 and 1865 the men in blue fought nearly all of the western tribes. Robert Utley describes many of these skirmishes in consummate detail, including descriptions of garrison life that was sometimes agonizingly isolated, sometimes caught in the lightning moments of desperate battle.

4 out of 5 stars Early Indian Wars.......2003-01-31

Most people only know about the Indian Wars in the Northern Great Plains from 1866 to 1890. This book has a short history of the years 1848 to 1865 to fill the gaps in your knowledge. These years marked the continental dimensions of the United States, and the evolving policies towards the Native Americans. The military met hostile conditions of climate and geography unlike east of the Mississippi.

Chapter One begins at the end of the Mexican War; an army of 100,000 officers and men invaded a foreign country and defeated forces five times their number. The Army's priority was still on westward expansion: travel routes and settlements. Mineral wealth (gold, silver) was the most important; agriculture followed later. A standing army distasteful to the Founding Fathers became a necessity in expanding the American Republic into a Continental power. While the Militia was useful, only the Regular Army could be supported by national tax dollars.

The many Indian tribes were never united, and often fought among themselves as with the white settlers. The Army had to protect settlers and peaceful Indians from hostile Indians, and peaceful Indians from white settlers. The Indians knew how to live in these lands, and to take advantage of the environment. Most were partially or wholly nomadic. Their culture centered on war and its rewards. Their loose social organization exalted the individual at the expense of the group; no chief's word could bind his people. This caused conflict with the whites who could not understand this way of life. They would never attack unless they could win, and otherwise quickly disappeared from the enemy. The Army could win by operating as a disciplined team against fragmented warriors (seeking individual combat as in Medieval times). The Army also had howitzers ("guns that shot twice"), and rifles that could reach their enemy before threatened by smooth bore muskets. The Indian tribes could not unite for a vigorous and sustained offense or defense.

Chapter Ten tells how the Army was organized in the Civil War. The Volunteers were the great citizen armies that bore the brunt of the fighting. They were organized by state governors and mustered into US service for 6 to 24 months. Their officers were appointed by governors, general officers by the President. The Militia were also organized by the Governors, but could not serve outside of their state or territory. The Regular Army was enlarged for the war. Most recruits chose the Volunteers for their enlistment bounties and shorter terms of service. Many of the Volunteers were used for the Indian wars, including "Galvanized Yankees" (Confederate prisoners released for this duty). Their job was to protect the wagon trains on the trails, the stations, and the telegraph lines. They provided business for contractors and neighboring towns.

Chapter Sixteen provides a summary of the preceding chapters. One development was the winter campaign. A stationary tribe would be attacked, their food and lodgings destroyed, their only survival lay in reaching an Indian Agency. Another was total war, the deliberate killing of women and children, even if against law and tradition (pp 345-6). Such actions outraged the humanitarian sensibilities of easterners. There was conflict between the military and civil branches of the government.

            4 out of 5 stars Amazing Undertaking.......2002-10-08

In this book Robert Utley describes in significant detail the operations of the United States and Volunteer Armies in the American West. Until this book I never quite grasped the magnitude of the problem involved, the competing vested interests, the vast distances covered and the logistical nightmares the Army faced.

Detailing the regional conflicts sequentially, Utley delivers a complete analysis of the battles, campaigns and treaties involved in conquering of the American West. I never realized how many battles, skirmishes and firefights were fought. I never realized how complex the politics surrounding the Army's operations were. And most of all I never realized how limited the Army's resources of men and material were.

It is truly stupefying what was accomplished in the seventeen years, 1848 - 1865, between the end of the War with Mexico and the close of the U.S. Civil War. With few exceptions all the tribes of the Pacific and those of the Great Basin were subjugated. At the same time, the foundations for the subsequent conquering of the tribes of the Great Plains, Texas and American Southwest were formulated.

The final act of Manifest Destiny was the subjugation of the Native Americans. This is the story of how that process was begun.

A genre of supernatural fiction was among the more improbable products of the Age of Enlightenment. This book questions the historical reasons for its growing popularity in the late eighteenth century. Beginning with the notorious case of the Cock Lane ghost, a performing poltergeist who became a major attraction in London in 1762, and with Garrick's spellbinding and paradigmatic performance as the ghost-seeing Hamlet, it moves on to look at the Gothic novels of Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe, M. G. Lewis, and others, in unexpected new lights, drawing out the connection between fictions of the supernatural and the growth of consumerism.

4 out of 5 stars History of the Gothic.......2000-04-18

This book is an excellent read for anyone with an interest in the history or scholarship the Gothic or "horrible" literature in general. Its focus on the shift in English society to a more luxury and consumer-driven economy, during the time when supernatural literature developed as a genre, becomes a little dense at times, if that isn't one's area of particular interest. However, it is full of insight into the reading public that made the field of supernatural fiction what it remains today, and why people found it (and by extension, still find it) so entertaining to be shocked and frightened by unreal events.

                                Book Description

Dramatic changes in the reading public and literary market in early nineteenth-century England not only altered the relationship between poet and reader but prompted new conceptions of the poetic text, literary reception, and authorship. With the decline of patronage, the rise of the novel and the periodical press, and the emergence of the mass reading public, poets could no longer assume the existence of an audience for poetry. Andrew Franta examines how the reconfigurations of the literary market and the publishing context transformed the ways poets conceived of their audience and the forms of poetry itself. Through readings of Wordsworth, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Hemans, and Tennyson, and with close attention to key literary, political, and legal debates, Franta proposes a new reading of Romanticism and its contribution to modern conceptions of politics and publicity.

                                  Book Description

This is the first extended study of the role gender plays in the writing, reading, publishing, and reviewing of poetry in late 18th-century and early 19th-century Britain. Ross examines the ways in which Romanticism has been constructed, from the Romantic period to the present, as a masculine
enterprise. He then traces the growth of a "feminine" poetic tradition from 1730 to 1830, showing the importance of this previously neglected tradition in the understanding of 19th-century British culture, and the development of current literary history, theory, and taste.

                                        Book Description

This is the English-language edition of what has become one of the most controversial books in German politics today. Oskar Lafontaine was the leader of Germany's Social Democratic party and finance minister in Gerhard Schr÷der's government until he suddenly resigned in March 1999. Lafontaine's left-wing commitments brought him into conflict with Schr÷der's endorsement of third way politics and with his attempt to remodel the SDP along the lines of Tony Blair's New Labour. The Heart Beats on the Left is the inside story of why Lafontaine broke with the SDP and Schr÷der's government, and why he believed that the social and political costs of Schr÷der's third way politics were too high. It is a merciless settling of scores in which the policies of Schr÷der and his government are subjected to scathing criticism. But it is also the most sustained criticism of third way politics from a prominent political figure who stands on the left. A bestseller in Germany and already translated into many languages, this book is bound to be widely reviewed in English and to become a focal point for political debate about social democracy and its future.

I just finished reading Living at the Edge of the World and now I'm getting all my friends to read it. This book was unforgetable. Tina is so honest about her fears and confusions, anyone can relate to her. The book is anything but depressing. After reading it you feel as if you know Tina and her friends. Now that I've started a new novel, I miss Tina! This a book for anyone who has ever felt hopeless or lonely, and for all us who continue to remember the homeless in our thoughts and prayers.

A wonderful read, simply stated, but by it's subject matter ... riveting. Twice as real as "the mole people." One of the best books I've read this year.
