5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A 'MUST READ' FOR ALL SENIOR HRM PRACTITIONERS!.......2005-04-11

The thrust of the book is about how the HRM function can be redefined to make it more effective. The authors explore outsourcing transactional work as a middle ground between being trapped in an administrative role or becoming strategic at the cost of abandoning these duties. The book addresses such basic questions as: How new business realities increase the demand for HR services and actions? What HR departments do to deliver value? What new business models for delivering HR will work? How to measure HR effectiveness? The authors examine a major HR business process outsourcer in action and provide case studies of four major companies that have reinvented their HR functions. We at HRconsultant.com highly recommend this book. It presents the cutting-edge in designing the HRM funtion; it points the way forward. The book is a 'must read' for all senior-level HRM practitioners and leaders.

          Book Description

The broad range of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) encompasses all areas of modern medicine and have an enormous impact on the process of drug development. Using disease-oriented methods to cover everything from screening to expression and crystallization, G Protein-Coupled Receptors in Drug Discovery describes the physiological roles of GPCRs and their involvement in various human diseases. The book presents current approaches in drug discovery that include target selection, establishment of screening and functional assays. It also covers recombinant GPCR expression for drug screening and structural biology, different methods for structural characterization of GPCRs, and the importance of bioinformatics. The book has been carefully edited to avoid overlapping information, some duplication has been intentionally permitted so that each chapter can function as an independent unit. Providing in-depth discussions on structure and dynamics of GPCRs, this book outlines the importance of the GPCRs to drug discovery in general and drug targets specifically.

This groundbreaking book for physicians, biologists, and students analyzes the problem of how the sameness and difference in living things are controlled normally, in the course of development and maintenance, and abnormally, in the course of defective growth, tumors, and cancer. Like everything else in life, the biological sameness and difference in organisms has evolved. An understanding of this biological evolution will help control abnormalities, such as those associated with birth defects and invasive, destructive tumors.

              Book Description

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is an enchanting tale that captures the magic of reading and the wonder of romantic awakening. An immediate international bestseller, it tells the story of two hapless city boys exiled to a remote mountain village for re-education during China’s infamous Cultural Revolution. There the two friends meet the daughter of the local tailor and discover a hidden stash of Western classics in Chinese translation. As they flirt with the seamstress and secretly devour these banned works, the two friends find transit from their grim surroundings to worlds they never imagined.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but boring........2007-10-08

Maybe something was lost in translation??? Maybe I am not a deep enough thinker to have truly enjoyed this novel. One thing it did for me was to pique my interest in reading Balzac, Dumas, Kipling, Dickens, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Just like watching Chinese cinema.......2007-09-05

In a series of little scenes, Dai Sijie presents you with jigsaw puzzle-like pieces that suddenly, in the final chapters, merge into a great picture. Western readers used to a more linear plotline might fumble during the first few chapters, but just let the scenes wash over you and you will find yourself carried to a clever, ironic and satisfying ending. Anyone with an ounce of Chinese history under their belt will appreciate this wry look at China's cultural revolution in action. A quick read - well worth the short investment of time.

4 out of 5 stars Books can mean the World .......2007-08-24

I would call this a coming of age story, but yet the narrator and his friend Luo are already 18 years old when they are sent away from there families as part of the Chinese Re-Education program. This took them away from their families and lives with very little hope of ever seen them again. But that is not what this book was really about for me, it was more a story of hope, of love, of lust, of friendship, of betrayal and how books when you don't have access to them, mean the world to you. They can be your savior and your burden, but you are willing to risk everything for them. How when you have so very little, you can still have a whole world available to you.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Chinese story.......2007-08-23

An interesting story about two young men banned to a small village during the cultural revolution. It tells their hardships but also contains a romantic story.

3 out of 5 stars Left me feeling empty ..........2007-07-26

I felt this novel was quite a bit over-rated. Although the concept is interesting and different (i.e., the re-education of the city academic boys in Mao Zedung's communist regime), the story was a bit flat. I have a feeling something must have been lost in the translation. Despite being so short, I had to force myself to get back into this novel. I guess I just found it mediocre, a bit boring and really, nothing special. There was nothing awful about it; but nothing great either.

It really is about time for a thoughtful, well-researched book on President Grant. Too many historians don't do the work required to present truth, hence this book is a real contribution. Now, someone needs to call up the White House and have the "official" biography changed. The current one is pathetic. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Revisionism At Its Best.......2004-01-09

This is probably the bravest Grant book ever written. Even those biographers favorable to him have a tendency, like so many sheep, to parrot the same old lines about him as the bumbling, inept politician who presided over one of the most corrupt administrations is American history. It does not seem to bother these historians that they are, for the most part, simply repeating partisan attacks that had been made against him by his political enemies for their own questionable (to say the least) reasons.

Frank Scaturro is the first writer I have ever seen to use a fresh approach to the Grant presidency, pointing out not only that the much touted scandals of his term in office were frequently based on weak or exaggerated evidence, but that Grant himself was a strong, enlightened leader who accomplished more than most want to admit. It seems that the victor of Vicksburg and Appomattox was not all that different from the man who occupied the White House, after all.

This book is highly recommended for anyone who wants to hear "the other side of the story" of Grant's oft-belittled political career.

5 out of 5 stars Finally- A Honest Account of the Grant Presidency!.......2001-03-12

During the 50 years following the Civil War, the presidency of U. S. Grant was completely distored in an attempt to diminish the accomplishments of the Grant era (Civil Rights) and to take away some of the luster from the man who saved the Union.

The Democratic party- particullary of the South- stiffled the great civil rights efforts of the Republicans during reconstruction. As time passed, and voting rights and other legislative initatives of the Granta administration were dismembered by the Southern Demacrats, they constantly sought to sully the memory of Grant. One of the keys to that effort was portraying the Grant administration in a bad light in terms of corruption. This was done by distortion history, and the outright falsification of the facts involved in the Grant administration. To a large extent these distortions have not been challanged.

Grant Reconsidered presents the historical record in a straight fowrward manner: The Grant presidency offered tremendous acomplishments- and really offered a bridge from a slave nation to a nation where all men have the same rights. An outstanding book!!

5 out of 5 stars A book that reshapes debate about an underrated presidency.......2000-07-28

Readers looking for a history of Grant's presidency will be sorely disappointed. The author assumes that the reader has at least a passing familiarity with previous biographies of Grant and of such events as Reconstruction, the Crédit Mobilier scandal, the Whiskey Ring and the Treaty of Washington. Nevertheless, "President Grant Reconsidered" is an important book that should help reshape debate about these events and rehabilitate the reputation of perhaps the most underrated President in American history.

                  Book Description

Burly men with stern expressions, coal dust on their callused ready hands, and Christian values in their hearts settled the mountains of Appalachia over a century ago. G.C. "Red" Jones, a determined boy from Harlan County, Kentucky, found himself in the company of these "true mountain men" in the early 1900s. After being thrown out of his home without money or food, Jones set out to prove his independence and strength against the backdrop of the Coal Wars, Great Depression, and World War II.

Although his encounters were often difficult and his adventures unsettling, Jones' classic memoir, Growing Up Hard in Harlan County, depicts an unexpectedly rewarding way of life. Jones found joy in family life and comfort in the kindness of strangers as he fought to get work, struggled to care for his loved ones, and vowed to represent the rights of coal miners in Washington. Despite the poverty and strife that frequently characterized the region, Jones' memoir is suffused with gratitude and pride for a rich life in Appalachia.

5 out of 5 stars An insight on my family........2007-04-04

I came across this book recently when the family home was in the process of being sold. It was a gift from my mother to my father, my father being born and spending part of his childhood in Harlan County, KY. I held onto it, and eventually got time to read it. As I got through most of the book, I found some interesting parallels in Mr. Jones' life and some of my family history. I was unaware of the history of "bloody Harlan," and learning about it, even if at this moment from only one voice, gave me a lot of insight on my family that I did not have before, and helped me understand how my family got to where it is now.

I HIGHLY recommend this book, to anyone who has ties to Harlan County, KY, easter Kentucky in general, or for anyone who enjoys the stories of a man who never knew the meaning of a vacation.

5 out of 5 stars life of a self made man.......2002-09-19

                  A must to read........
I felt I was there with him. I was eating the food and drinking the cold buttermilk. I could hear the heavy breathing of the mules going up the mountains of eastern Kentucky. This is a simple and straight look at a true and honest man, who taught himself and those around him that you choose your path in life. His seemed to be rewarded with an abundance of love.

                    Book Description

One of the most important writers of the twentieth century, André Gide also led what was probably one of the most interesting lives our century has seen. Gide knew and corresponded with many of the major literary figures of his day, from Mallarmé to Oscar Wilde. Though a Communist, his critical account of Soviet Russia in Return from the USSR earned him the enmity of the Left. A lifelong advocate of moral and political freedom and justice, he was a proscribed writer on the Vatican's infamous "Index." Self-published most of his life, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1947, at the age of 77. An avowed homosexual, he nonetheless married his cousin, and though their marriage was unconsummated, at 53 he fathered a daughter for a friend.

Alan Sheridan's book is a literary biography of Gide, an intimate portrait of the reluctantly public man, whose work was deeply and inextricably entangled with his life. Gide's life provides a unique perspective on our century, an idea of what it was like for one person to live through unprecedented technological change, economic growth and collapse, the rise of socialism and fascism, two world wars, a new concern for the colonial peoples and for women, and the astonishing hold of Rome and Moscow over intellectuals. Following Gide from his first forays among the Symbolists through his sexual and political awakenings to his worldwide fame as a writer, sage, and commentator on his age, Sheridan richly conveys the drama of a remarkable life; the depth, breadth, and vitality of an incomparable oeuvre; and the spirit of a time that both so aptly expressed.

                    3 out of 5 stars Detail.......2005-10-22

Andre Gide and his highly literate friends obviously left vast amounts of information on his/their lives. Gide also met almost everyone of note in his day in Europe. Mr Sheridan has all this material at his finger-tips and cannot be faulted in any way for that, but the result is a bit over-powering. At times, I felt the detail was bogging the book down. I was not sure I wanted to know quite so much about Gide's endless movements and meetings. It must be a very difficult decision for a biographer and no doubt Mr Sheridan has already suppressed large amounts of material. You do have to want to know an awful lot about Gide though to tackle this book.

                    3 out of 5 stars Homoerotic subtext.......2001-12-24

A biographer has a unique perspective on his subject: he can choose how to present the subject whatever way he likes. In this book, Sheridan has opted to present Gide as an artist who is constantly struggling between his homosexual nature and his Protestant upbringing which does not necessarily agree with the former. Contrary to the former reviewer, I do believe that Sheridan has successfully tied together Gide's works and his real life sexual orientation. In presenting Gide as such, Sheridan has demonstrated time and time again how such a life is reflected very closely in his works. My only wish is that Sheridan can present a much more balance view between Gide's sexual life and his other life. Literaly the first half of the book (300 pages plus), contain very detail sexual life of Gide. Many times it feels too overwhelming. Only when you get to Gide's association with Communist Part and his trip to the USSR (half way in the book), do you get more interesting aspects of Gide's life. I think Sheridan's description of Gide's relationship with his wife (Madelaine) and how Gide's dealt with her death, is superb. But this comes almost at the end of the book. If it is not for it's lack of balance, I would have given this book a 5-star rating.

                    1 out of 5 stars a hollywood report.......2001-08-30

i have studied gide for many years now and have a very large collection of his books as well as books on him....i was greatly disappointed by sheridan's bulky text on gide. unfortunately sheridan has decided to give us an intimate portrait of the life of gide that reads like a tabloid trash article. it is of less importance who gide slept with than the ideas that he puts forth over his lifetime that helped change the face of literature. previous biographies of gide have had to divide their time between the facts of his life and criticism of his books because the two are virtually inseparable. sheridan has opted for more of the former and less of the latter but never really makes a convincing case for doing this. he finds fault with many previous biographers, many of them intimates of gide, but never explains why his interpretation of the facts is better. i would suggest reading germaine bree or jean delay or justin o'brien's books on gide. sheridan's ideas fall from the realm of fact into the realm of fiction.

                    5 out of 5 stars A definitive, long overdue life of a 20th c. great........1999-03-28

The extraordinary work and life of one of the twentieth century's most influential authors is brought to vivid life in this magisterial biography. Sheridan has a complete understanding of both the period and the literature; his precis of the novels and diaries &c are succinct and his own written style is elegant and to the point.
