Customer Reviews:
Very useful.......2001-12-31
I have read all the reviews and agree with every one of them. This book provides some great icebreakers and energizers and does a good job of explaining them.
Yes, you can get similar exercises in other books, there are a ton out there, but for someone who needs a lot of good exercises in one book, this may be your choice.
Great Resource.......2000-11-29
I found this to be an excellent source of icebreakers. The activities get people involved and excited.
A Different Point of View.......2000-11-29
Personally, I found this book to be a great resource and found many of the activities new and refreshing. The ones that seemed more "tried and true" were accompanied by insightful uses for a variety of interpersonal skills. The price is well within the range of other resources of this type. I say, give it a try -- you'll like it. The other books by this author continue to present a host of fun-filled and educational activities.
Too expensive, too short, same old-same old stuff.......2000-10-28
This book has a lot of so-called energizers which have appeared in one form or another in 30 other books on the same topic. There's nothing fresh about this approach and the textbook manufacturer has, as usual, priced this way beyond its worth.skip it.

Book Description
This study focuses on the French chemists of 1830-1858, and their roles in the development of organic chemistry and its eventual connectin with atomic and valence-bond theory, and uncovers new complexities in the thought processes that led to the concept of valence. The exploration of Laurent's early career reveals that this French chemist had proposed a hyposthesis to explain phenomena due to valence fifteen years before August Kekulé's Exposition of the classic valence-bond theory in 1858. Laurent put forward a hypothesis supposing the dividibility of atoms at a time when such a theory was far removed from the possiblity of experimentation. Within the positivist philosophy which prevailed at the time, few besides him would have dared to advance such a hypothesis. Laurent's hypothesis influenced certain advances in his chemistry, and that of his close associate, Charles Gerhardt, and eventually these advances helped turn most chemists to atomism.

Book Description
This is Elizabeth Gaskell's first novel, a widely acclaimed work based on the actual murder, in 1831, of a progressive mill owner. It follows Mary Barton, daughter of a man implicated in the murder, through her adolescence, when she suffers the advances of the mill owner, and later through
love and marriage. Set in Manchester, between 1837-42, it paints a powerful and moving picture of working-class life in Victorian England.
Customer Reviews:
Lesser-known doesn't mean it isn't as good!.......2007-08-28
This book shows the opposite side of life of Gaskell's final novel, Wives and Daughters. Where Molly Gibson (another girl sharing her name appears in Mary Barton, too!) deals with a pettish and jealous stepmother and the perils of moving in society, Mary Barton's father worked the looms that perhaps provided the Gibsons with their fine dresses.
Unlike Dickens in Hard Times, Gaskell does not dwell so much on the physical aspects of Manchester (OK, Dickens didn't actually write about Manchester, but the city he used *was* Manchester) and their symbolism of moral and societal pollution, but she shows the effects of man's inhumanity to man. Her morality is quietly moving, not dogmatic. The workers' agitations and subsequent deadly repercussions are dealt with in a firm but understading light. While she condemns the act, the motivating factors (i.e. workers' treatment) can be understood.
Gaskell's working class book isn't as slick or symbolic as, say Germinal, but it is effective. Although the love story in itself is moving, we can also see it as the nobility of human spirit no matter where it lives or works. While the novel is titled Mary Barton, Mary serves as a tool to teach us and reprove us.
I highly recommend Wives and Daughters as well--Gaskell has surely matured and her dialogue is sharp and social criticism even more biting.
A keen observer of humanity.......2007-08-14
After watching the 2005 BBC TV-adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel "North and South", I was intrigued to go back and read the novel. I liked it so much, that I wanted to read more, and so found "Mary Barton". In both novels, I was impressed with Elizabeth Gaskell's keen insight into the human spirit - despair, doubt, kindness, love, compassion, hopelessness, loyalty, frivolity, and most of everything in between. She has a rare talent to create believable male and female characters (with their inherent differences in perception and interpretation) at all walks of life, and to inspire compassion and understanding for all her characters' actions. The plot is largely divided between mystery and romance, both of which are done well. This is definitely a book I would recommend to fellow Austen fans!
Compared to the majority of modern novels, her writing has more of a leisurely pace to it and she takes the time to describe the emotional inner workings of her characters as much as she devotes to outward plot development. The frequent historical or literary references not immediately at a current-day reader's fingertips are explained well in this edition's notes at the end for those who want to know (like me).
Historically, this book is a fascinating treatise of the working class toil, life, and death in the mid-1800s in Manchester, England, the rise of trade unions, and the trouble attendant therewith. Gaskell's astute observations about the living conditions of the poor in that day and age make for a compelling and thought-provoking read. It is hard to leave her books not feeling that the two opposite points of view of masters and men can be true, and that compassion might go a long way to bridge the gap.
dissappointed and read only half of it.......2007-07-06
I ordered the book after watching "north and south" tv adaptation
to another of elisabeth gaskell's book. i was curious to know more from this writer.
but this one was nothing similar:
the plot is slow, including irrelevant and too detailed side stories.
the main characters are not clear and are very distant to the reader,
in a way it's hard to care for them. so it was easy leaving the book in the middle.
"A Story of Manchester Life".......2007-02-07
Although this is not Gaskell's best novel, it is still well done and contains quite a bit of drama and romance. Much of the book concentrates on life in a manufacturing town, however, the love story has a prominent place. The characters in this book are lovable and fallable, as usual in Gaskell's work, and overall very realistic. This novel is set up much like "North and South" yet not as well put together, and with quite different characters. There is the struggle between masters and men and a love affair unrequitted on the female end with family and friends dropping like flies on account of mental or physical anxiety. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes Gaskell, Dickens, and the time period of early industrialization in England.
As to the edition, Everyman's Library always makes a nice hard copy. It includes a biography and timeline of work as well as the author's preface and an introduction by Jenny Uglow.
Mary Barton.......2006-05-18
Set in the industrial city of Manchester in northern England, this is one of Mrs. Gaskell's "social novels" (NORTH AND SOUTH was another), in which she attacked the harsh treatment of factory workers by the owners. It being a novel, there is also a love story. Mary Barton, daughter of a soured mill-hand, attracts the attention of two men: Henry Carson, son of one of the mill owners, and Jem Wilson, a worker. She chooses Carson (a big mistake, of course). Later Carson is killed and Wilson is suspected of the crime with jealousy as his motive. But Mary learns that her father, John, is actually the murderer, and she spends a good portion of the second half of the book trying to prove Wilson's innocence (she now realizes her mistake in picking Carson over her true feelings of love for Wilson) without implicating her father. John Barton is wracked with guilt, however, and makes a deathbed confession to Carson's father that redeems him. It's an energetic book, and the story moves forward swiftly. The trial scenes are especially stirring. MARY BARTON was one of the first novels set exclusively among the working classes, and the book was highly regarded by the public and critics alike (though the Manchester mill owners protested against it).

Book Description
Prairie Radical: A Journey Through the Sixties is the memoir of a young man whose life was radically changed when he joined the civil rights movement and spoke out against the war in Vietnam. It is a grass-roots inside history of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the largest student organization of the 1960s, as seen by one of its national officers who spent 1967-68 in the SDS national office, at the height of the antiwar movement It is also a history of the vibrant and innovative SDS chapter at the University of Texas in Austin, one of the Prairie Power strongholds, where the cultural rebellion and the political movement were united. Robert Pardun's story of that tumultuous period is set within the context of what was happening in Vietnam and interwoven with what we now know was happening inside the government and the FBI. The book is illustrated with photos, posters, and FBI documents.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent account of a small grass-roots movement that grew into a primary source of social and political change........2005-10-02
"Prairie Radical" is an excellent and balanced description of the anti-war movement, through the eyes of one the the early leaders in the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). As someone who came of age in the seventies, I've found this book very valuable in filling my gap of knowledge concerning the Vietnam antiwar movement, its relation to the civil rights movement, and the general political and cultural climate of the sixties. I find the ideas from Mr. Pardun's book echo quite strongly into the current U.S. foreign policy climate. I recommend this book for anyone interested in a "from the trenches" view of the sixties.
A Must Read.......2001-12-09
Fabulous book! Prairie Radical is fun to read, accurate and thoughtful. Why do ordinary young people do extraordinary things? Pardun shares his own upbringing in a mixed neighborhood in Pueblo, Colorado. His Dad "described himself as a conservative Republican which meant to him that he strongly believed in the conservation of the rights given to people by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights." He acted on those beliefs and raised a son who would as well. Pardun's journey takes him to Texas, where he became involved in Students for a Democratic Society while at the University of Texas, to Chicago, where he was a national officer of SDS, and finally to Arkansas, where he joined a late '60's back-to-the-land commune. His passion encompassed a range of issues during pivotal times. Better than any author I've read, Pardun develops and documents the crackling interaction between SDS's irrepressible enthusiam for justice, police and FBI secret dirty tricks (COINTELPRO), the growing battles over organizational structure and attempts by other groups to take over SDS. The book includes many photos of Texas activists at work and reproductions of SDS leaflets and FBI documents which give added dimension to Pardun's fascinating tale. One of the best books I've read about white radicals in the '60's. A must-read for anyone interested in social change.
Great 1960s Memoir.......2001-11-16
Robert Pardun's Prairie Radical is the best account
that I have read so far of the SDS experience and the
1960s historical context in which it occurred. I was active
in SDS in the Oklahoma and Wisconsin chapters and
worked in the National Office. From what I remember,
Pardun's memoir is faithful to what happened. More than
that, he has carefully reconstructed the issues that
people felt to be significant and described them in a
way that is both personable and engaging. I strongly
recommend this very well written book for students and
others who want to understand the history of the 1960s
and what it was like to be an activist in those
momentous times.

In more ways than one, Clarice T. Campbell was a friend of the civil rights movement. An indefatigable campaigner for desegregation, Campbell was also an inveterate letter-writer; the fact that many of her letters concerned civil rights has come as a boon and a blessing for historians of that era. The letters Campbell wrote to family and friends during the heyday of the early sixties have been collected in Civil Rights Chronicle, an eyewitness account of a troubled time.
Campbell's involvement in civil rights began in Pasadena where she worked as a teacher and helped integrate her local schools. When her husband died, Campbell moved south and began teaching history in black colleges. During those years she wrote detailed, perceptive letters that described the clash of race and culture from ground zero. What becomes immediately apparent is the importance of both individual and communal acts; the heroism of such figures as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks is admirable and necessary, but without organizations like the SCLC or the NAACP, they wouldn't have gotten far. Civil Rights Chronicle offers valuable reading for professional historians and anyone interested in America's troubled racial history.
Customer Reviews:
A citizen who refused to remain passive in an unjust era.......2000-01-16
One seldom recalls that black students caught up in the civil rights movement were also struggling during this era simply to get an education. The author takes us through a turbulent era from inside the hurricane as both teacher and participant in the civil rights movement. Dramatic, gripping and filled with dry humor, this is a must read for anyone interested not only in the civil rights movement but in the history of black education in this country.

Book Description
Journalist and spectacularly successful governor, Carlos Lacerda was Brazil's foremost orator in this century and its most controversial politician. He might have become president in the 1960s had not the military taken over. In the first volume, John F. W. Dulles paints a portrait of a rebellious youth, who had the willfulness of his prominent father and who crusaded for Communism before becoming its most outspoken foe. Recalling Lacerda's rallying cry, "Brazil must be shaken up," Dulles traces the career of the journalist whose unsparing attacks on the men in power led authorities to imprison him and employ thugs who pummeled him physically. Lacerda's spirited oratory helped him become Brazil's most popular congressman, but it scared the rulers of Brazil, who prohibited the broadcast of his speeches after he returned from exile in 1956. Their effort to deprive him of his mandate stirred the entire nation and culminated in one of the most dramatic sessions ever held in the Chamber of Deputies.

Book Description
On July 25, 1995, a talented and troubled Ivy League student named Alexander Scott began writing what he called "an inquiry," a year-long diary of his visions, thoughts, and dreams. Two months after his last entry in 1996, he took his own life.
Many consider his journal to be a long suicide note, but it also stands as a powerful statement about the human condition. It is a collection of poetic reflections on a world, a city, and a mind in turmoil.
Diary of a Young Bipolar follows Alex's journey from the dingy streets of West Philadelphia to the banks of the Nile as he searches for meaning and grapples with the passions which threaten to destroy him.
He discovers a simple truth along the way: Sometimes the world is too large and too painful, but there is a beauty in things so strong, it can save us all.
